Title: Imperialism II help
Post by: DicedT on November 21, 2015, 11:18:33 AM
Downloaded Imperialism 2 from GoG. It crashes in Win 7 every time I place my initial city. I tried setting compatibility to Win 98 and administrator privileges. Still crashing.

Never had a problem with running it on any version of Windows. Try re-installing and different compatibility modes. Don't give up on this great game!

May be a software conflict.

I tend to try turning off extras in my system tray when this happens.

Had to do so with one or two other GOG games.  I recall Chaos Overlords would bug out or freeze up when the Logitech mouse program was running in the background.  Some other game (non-GOG?) would crash when Nvidia GeForce Experience was running.  Disabling your AV software might do it, depending on which one you're using.

I'd recommend checking the GOG forum for the specific game, as there's often some hints on possible causes there.  But if you're stumped, it may take some experimentation.

If I remember right, I had a similar problem way back when I got ImpII from GOG.  I tried the following that I found in their forums and it helped get the game running for me:

I'll have to play a full game yet. In order not to crash, force the screenresolution to 640*480 and add it to the DEP-exception list (W7->System->Advanced->Performance->DEP)

Weird, I've been running Imp2 with no compatibility settings in Win7 for years.  Played it this year. However, I'm using the original game, not the GOG version.

edit:  GOG is not installing it in a Program Folders directory I hope?
