It did not take long for the full import of the U.S. withdrawal from the Philippines to become apparent. U.S. presence declined in the South China Sea and this allowed other navies greater freedom. The PLA(Navy), under strict orders from Beijing, stepped up its patrols around the Spratley archipelago. The Vietnamese and the Philippines vigorously protested this action, but not much was done to help them. By 1998, the Chinese felt confident enough to make a determined push for the whole of the island chain. By controlling the Spratleys, the PLA(Navy) would be in position to threaten busy shipping routes; the forces assigned there would also cover the Chinese invasion of the Philippines. Once the Philippines had fallen, no one would be able to oust the Chinese from their sea.

Much was carried out to ensure the smooth running of the initial stages of the operation. Vietnam was bribed into hamstringing the ASEAN response and the Philippine communist insurgency was expanded and financed by the PRC. Chinese Special Forces were clandestinely inserted to advise the guerrillas. All that was needed was a spark.

Soviet Blitz Against Northern Defended Sea Lane

The Soviets desperately need to reduce the flow of supplies to NATO ground units fighting in Europe.  With Keflavik in NATO hands, it is very difficult for the Soviets to conduct attacks against the defended sea lanes.  The only way to make an impact on the re-supply effort is to attack both the escorts and the supporting bases en masse and then go after the merchants while the defenders are recovering.

1.0 SitRep:

It has been decided that a flotilla of our ships will exercise near the Palawan Passage.  This will demonstrate our ability and willingness to back up our claims.

2.0 Intelligence:

Palawan HQ has received reports of an unknown Chinese ship lurking near the oilfields.  Her intentions are inscrutable.

3.0 Orders:

As part of Exercise Shining Land, practice the interception of smuggling vessels.  If the opportunity arises, put your training into practice.

Protect the oil platforms of the area by boarding and inspecting any suspicious vessels.

Sea of Dragons Battleset - Korean Standoff

"Under the situation where a war may break out any moment, there is no need to keep north-south military communications," the head of a North Korean delegation told the South by telephone Wednesday, according to the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency.

There are several hotlines between North and South Korea. Earlier this month, Pyongyang disconnected a Red Cross hotline that ran through the border village of Panmunjom and was used by officials on both sides, according to the South Korean Unification Ministry.

A period of rising tension, sparked by the U.S. announcement for withdrawal of the 2nd Division, has characterized relations between North and South Korea.  Border incursions by North Korean special forces have increased and several acts of terrorism, carried out in strategic cities (e.g. the destruction of Pusan's main railway signaling centre), have been identified as occurring under North Korean instructions.  The rhetoric issuing from both governments has become increasingly bellicose.  In order to show commitment, the U.S. has moved the 7th Fleet to the East China Sea and has sent across both ground reinforcements and munitions.  Although a number of U.N. resolutions have been passed, condemning the belligerent moves, only the U.K. and the Australians offer more than vocal support.  A U.K. Marine Commando is flown to Twenty-Nine Palms and two frigates sent from the Gulf.  Australia offers a battalion of troops, a DDG, and two frigates.

This scenario was inspired by the situation depicted in the Sea of Dragons publication from Clash of Arms.

1.0 SitRep:

As part of the invasion plan for the Western Combined Army, a joint Marine and Special Forces regiment is to be inserted near the town of Sokch'o.  The convoy will set out from Wonsan and will use darkness and the cover of the shoreline to achieve a safe transit.  Contact with the enemy is to be avoided unless the safety of the transports is compromised.

2.0 Intelligence:

You are approximately 90nm North of the landing beach.  Your orders were to set sail just after dusk and you have made good time.  You are steaming under radio silence, but HQ is passing along information to you.  No major enemy movements are suspected and intell indicates that several FAC [Fast Attack Craft] are out on patrol.  They are patrolling singly and not as a group.  You should be able to overcome any enemy forces with ease.  However, your orders are clear:  you are not to actively engage enemy forces, but to deliver your charges safely.  If the road is cut, then the ROK divisions will be trapped and easy to destroy.  A number of fishing boats have been positioned near your route to act as decoys and confuse enemy spies.

The situation for NATO forces in Norway is grim.  Desperate, NATO decides to send a high-speed convoy directly from the U.S. to Bergen, rather than routing it first through the U.K.  Since Keflavik remains under NATO control, the primary Soviet opposition is restricted to units in the Norwegian Sea.

  • Hidden units can be destroyed without detection

      When hidden units are part of a group, attacks on the Group Icon can destroy the hidden units without the need to ever detect them.

  • Units out of range can be destroyed

      Units out of range can be destroyed if they are part of a group.

  • All ammo not available

      300 rounds of ammo are shown, but only 44 are offered for fire allocation.

  • Weapon Max Launch Speed ignored

      Weapons ignore Maximum Launch Speed set in database.

  • Unable to fire SSM

      Unable to fire SSM Sizzler from any depth or range.  Weapons will fire from DDG Sovremennyy.

  • Automatic contact classification

      The true type classification of a contact is automatically revealed when it is designated hostile by the hotkey.

  • Group Nav Zone Settings

      The Nav Zone settings for a Group are not adopted by the individual units forming that Group. i.e. If you order a TF to avoid Ship Threat Zone [A], the Group icon will avoid the Threat Zone but the individual ships of the Group will sail into the Threat Zone.

    Work-around solution: Set the Nav Zone parameters for each unit individually.
  • Subs in groups

      Subs joined with groups are automatically assigned a formation patrol zone on the ASW axis that cannot be changed or modified.

  • AI inside Minimum Launch Range

      If an AI unit finds itself inside the Minimum Launch Range of its weapons, it is unable to move away in order to fire its weapons.

  • MAD contact for ground facilities

      The MAD detector is able to detect ground facilities.

  • Weapon ignores range limitation

      Weapon sometimes ignores range limitation and fires on targets outside of the range set by the Database.  This can sometimes result in guns hitting targets 100s of miles away.  Often, it occurs when the target is vaguely detected.

  • Sonobuoy deployment altitude

      Sonobuoys can be deployed at any altitude.

  • Min engine altitude ignored

      Min engine altitude ignored for Trident SLBM.  Missile can be launched from a depth deeper that allowed by the engine parameters.

  • Plotted mission auto-RtBs

      Aircraft on plotted mission Return to Base on their own volition against the wishes of the player

  • All land units re-named to default

      All land units re-named to default when scenario is re-built by SE thereby corrupting all ViConds dependent upon them

  • Recon mission self-deleted

      Recon missions delete themselves after completion of one run instead of repeating

  • Active sonobuoys have no range ring

      Active sonobuoys have no range ring

  • AI engages neutral units

      AI deliberately engages neutral units even though they are not hostile towards the AI and are unarmed

      Surface groups are broken up into individual units when scenario is re-built by SE

  • Unit postures corrupted

      Units in pre-3.10 scenarios that did not report their positions to the player now do so in 3.10  Postures are corrupted

  • ASuW mission never goes ECM active
