Flying Pig Games' (run by Mark Walker) new squad level game system is up on KS. First 100 can get it fer $55.

Go get some!
O0
EDIT - only 33 cheap ones left!
yeah, 3 hours after I posted GARPA... grrrrrrrr >:(
...and the 100 at $55 are all gone. :(
It was an insta-buy for me at that price, but given I've pretty much exceeded by gaming budget for the month, the $70 level has me stopped - at least for the moment.
Looks damn good though.

If they whip up a nice official VASSAL mod w/ lotsa eye candy I might consider the $70 tier. What's the regular release price supposed to be?

First price posted at FPG was $90... don't know if that's still the "regular" price or not.
RE: VASSAL module... I can promise there will be one with lots of eye candy.... I'm doing it. ^-^
Defo cool. :)
Large 30 x 41 inch maps to play on.
2 to start and a 3rd based on Stalingrad, if stretch goal is reached.
I can hardly wait to try out the Vassal Barthheart. O0
Whilst it does indeed look very nice, I have to wonder how much of an influence the LnL system games has on it, and do I really need another tactical game system. :-\
Quote from: bob48 on February 14, 2015, 09:16:07 AMhow much of an influence the LnL system games has on it
Shayne designed it before connecting w/ Mark, so it's origins exist outside of the LnL family. What's been added since then I can't say.
I've read the rules and the only thing it shares with LnL series is the fact it's a squad level game. They all have squads, crewed gun and vehicles... well except Combat Commander :P
This one has a very different turn sequence from all the rest.... although probably closest to Conflict of Heroes as the turn can go on until impulses get used up.
Love the 1" hexes. Big enough to use micro armour on. O0
Meh!
Love the idea of micro armour. A pal and I actually have done that with CoH.
Man...this looks good, but the current awful exchange rate is making me extremely choosy with Kickstarter projects these days.
It's made the funding goal > $16K. O0
25 days to go to get to the Stalingrad stretch at $20K. :D
Woohoo! $20K+! Stalingrad map and units are in.
Next stretch at $25K is a 3 day campaign set of scenarios. O0
Quote from: Barthheart on February 20, 2015, 08:11:08 AMNext stretch at $25K is a 3 day campaign set of scenarios. O0
A campaign that takes 3 days to play!? You'd only ever get to it at a game convention!
<cough!>Vassal<cough!>
3 days in the game world :)
Day 1 3 seperate battles.
Day 2 choose reinforcements for those battles.
Day 3 final battle with all forces on the map.
Map is sectioned on first 2 days.
Could be played with teams, which would be cool.
:knuppel2:
Some new units. This StuIG33 can collapse building hexes and break up that tea party of Russian Guards >:D
Cool stuff Jamm. O0 Can't wait to get it on my table.
Yep the lock is in If I compared this to Holdfast that costs $5 to make and went pre pub on KS for $60 for a stock map, paper box and 30 blocks...This will have 3 maps shizea loads of counters and if Walker is doing the scenarios you know they will be knife fights.
The rules are ok and need some polish tho. I hope the developer/designer invests in making them more consumable than LnL was, sorry Mark Love ya but your rules always needed a lot of work.
I think Vance is on the money about it being a different game. Fire, Op fire assault etc are all very different. So is the command aspect.
That said we have lots of choices, so it needs to be Pretty Fing Awesome PFA to become a series of note.
I'm in @ $55 and glad for it, would be happy at $70 also for what you get.
I hope it uses a different spotting mechanic than Lock n Load series. Being unable to shoot at buildings that may have an enemy in or do recon by fire to me is a very odd design decision in that series.
There are no spotting rules in this game. You can shoot at anything on the map... as long as you have a clear LoS.
Spotting in LnL is one of my favourite mechanisms in that series. It takes away the need for hidden units and some to the "All Seeing Eye" aspect.
I suppose I can see it being OK for the boardgame but it felt odd in the PC game. It actually went against German urban combat doctrine used in Stalingrad.
I understand that there's no structured turn sequence; that the phasing player just keeps going until he runs out of activations. Is there any kind of reaction fire that can take place during the phasing players portion of the turn? If so, can you react to fire combat as well as movement?
Quote from: GJK on February 24, 2015, 11:16:54 AM

Not quite. Each player has a pool of impulse points to use during a turn. Player A uses an impulse, then Player B, then A again etc.
You can only pass on using an impulse if you currently have fewer points left than your opponent.
The opposing player can use impulse points to take defensive fire options at moving units.... not sure about reacting to fire but I'll check.
Sounds a little like CoH
In CoH all units have a number of inherent action pts so all units will be able to move and fire.
With the Impulse pts, the player chooses which units perform what actions.
Move a tank, fire a Rifle squad, Rally a broken squad that is in danger of being assaulted, etc. the decisions are up to you as you will rarely have all the Impulse pts that you would like.
Your Impulse pt total is also reduced by increased casualties.
WooHoo! Second stretch goal met! +$25K.
What's up next Jamm?
Played last night over VASSAL with Mark and Shayne there to watch and answer questions.
Interesting system. Takes some getting used to the kind of free form turn but once you get going it flows well.
I like the infantry CRT, no chance to use the AP one yet. Unit morale is set by scenario rather than on the counter. When taking fire and you shake or break you have a chance to shrug it off if you can make a roll against your morale. But when you take casualties you always take casualties.
Good stuff. O0
OK Vance, now you definitely have my interest up O0

^I hope so, since most of my gaming is solo.
I think it solos well.
Was wondering what the rest of the stretch goals look like. The "Coming Soon" is already past the half way mark with 'soon' not in sight.
Anybody got an idea of what they might be?
Good Hunting.
MR
Mark is trying to come up with stuff that won't delay the deliver if the project as is....
That makes the project look like it has poor planning. Why would you start a KS program and not have figured out what your stretch goals are instead of just putting "Coming Soon"? They are already 2/3 of the way through the time frame for the project.
Maybe it got more funding than they thought it would and were caught by surprise.

And getting more crowded every month.

MR
Hi MR,
I'd like to start off by saying that Mark has thrown a tremendous amount of value into the game right off the start, a player will have lots to play with.
And the extra map, counters and scenarios were added to the base game, not as priced add-ons.
Selling so well can lead to the problem of promising the moon and not being able to deliver, or spending longer in development and ticking everyone off
Maybe the stretches should have set loftier goals, but at least this way they were reached and they'll be on your table.
Still discussing other things though.
Besides, a man with your avatar should be happy with the Stalingrad map ;)
Mad Russian is never happy. :P
From the images at the kickstarter page it looks like a Finland map could be one of the stretch goals yet to be named. The other, Kursk?
Only to boast...a couple of Early-Bird KS slots opened up for some reason and I was able to ninja one.
Looking forward, but MR's questions re: the KS campaign strike me as good ones...
Best,

New stretch goal, $44K, is 8 more counters, heavy tanks for both sides, and some new scenarios to use them in. Everyone gets this not just KS.
Presently at $32.8K.
8 days left.
I've never backed anything on KS before, but this sorely tempts me :-\

It's probably because some folks cancelled their pledges. One of those $85 w/(accidentally) Free Shipping slots opened up as well so I grabbed it! Not as good as $55 but still...

LOL - I just know I'm gonna fold......
That's the spirit Bob O0
Lookit all the pretty maps, Bob...
Maybe a dumb question, but here I go....
The more you pledge, the more you get. I understand that, but won't some people have a more complete game?
Meaning: Stretch goals like
Nine additional Luck Cards
Additional Scenarios and counters
Unit data cards for the 8 new counters
After all is said and done, will people willing to purchase the game get the basic game or deluxe game in the future?
PS: Does look like a SUPER game!!! Well done to all involved!!! ;D
The $85 dollar level will get you 9 extra Luck cards, custom dice and a strategy guide. These are KS exclusive and Mark says not available ever again.
Stretch goal stuff in stretch #1 and #3 will be included in every game. Even after the KS is complete.
Stretch #2 in KS exclusive.... I think....
I have to admit that now that I've backed it, I'm really eager to get this and play it!
:D Just grabbed a $85 package with free shipping! Somebody dropped as I was watching it!
Kickstarter lesson here folks:
Even if the tier you had your eye on is sold out keep checking it. Someone may back out at any time...
Man! The more I read the rules, the more I want it NOW :D
Thanks for the support Richie O0
I'm playing it now and having a blast.
Just got the Stalingrad map from the printers yesterday and I'm itching to get on it.
All those ruins, the map seems really claustrophobic and the battles I'm sure will feel the same. :)

Cool. But what didn't you like?
Its really just my own perspective on tac level games, and it is just like other games of that scale that I play; it fails to address aspects such as unit cohesion, a realistic way of dealing with command and the use of squads / platoons.
I have no doubt that it will a good 'game' and I wish FPG every success with it. The maps and components look outstanding, but, as I say, I'm now looking for a game that handles tactical level combat in a more 'realistic' way, and without a vast rules overhead. As far as I can see, no such game presently exists that does that.
Quote from: bob48 on March 13, 2015, 02:59:11 PMAs far as I can see, no such game presently exists that does that.
au contraire... http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22877/fields-fire
and for deeper discussion on that one, please open a separate thread so we don't derail this one :)
Fair comment. I should, however, have been more specific and said 'board game'. As I understand if FoF is primarily a card based game?
http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=12997
Reached the 'Heavy Metal' goal, that's great O0
I understand Bob, not every game will tick everyone's checklist.
Unit cohesion I think is a lot more complicated at the tactical level. I believe there is a lot more chaos when the bullets start flying than people like to admit.
There are leadership rules which dip into it, but adding more constraints to how a firefight is played can make a game more of a chess match with soldiers as pieces.
It's a delicate balance in game design, and choices have to be made.
Thank's for checking it out though and I always listen to new ideas. :)
I fully appreciate what you say. At some point, I will most likely get it anyway, maybe when it goes to the Western Front.
It is not by any means my intention to 'trash' the game in any respect, and my comments are purely based on my own preferences.

I see this and BoB as our board games into the future :D
Looks like this one is finally off to the printers. Very much looking forward to finally getting my hands on it...
I just picked up the PDF version and I'm curious how most folks do Print and Play.
I'm thinking of just sending it off to the local Staples and have it done, but the scale will be off on the map (hexes a bit too big). I'm thinking heavy cardstock for the counters and such.
If anyone has any advice or insight on this please let me know. This is my first foray into a game like this.
For the counters, I print them onto full page labels - eg. Avery 8165.
Then stick the label to 2mm matboard, the stuff used to frame pictures. You can get large sheets at places like Michael's or art supply stores.
Then use a rotary cutter and steel ruler to cut them out.
For maps, I'm luck to have access to a large format inkjet printer so I print my own, then spray glue it to Bristol board. But Staples should be able to do it.
Or you could try something like VistaPrint or similar and have it put on vinyl for a long lasting map.

Ahh perfect! I'd wondered about a good way to transfer the counters. The map printed out last night, dude at Staples was cool enough to merge the two PDF's into one seamless map.
It was pretty cool to see all the guys at the print center checking the map out. It's impressive at full size.

I kind of wish they'd done something different than the Western Front -- a bit too safe of a choice, I think (but then, so was the Eastern Front...). Pacific or Italian might've been more compelling theatre choices, if only because they're a bit less well-trodden. Still, the Western Front pieces and maps look characteristically great, so it'll probably be an auto-buy for me regardless... ;)
you want obscure, we need more CBI-theater games! :D
More Pacific/CBI stuff would definitely be most welcome, as would China. I'm bummed I missed the boat on L&L Tactics: Heroes of the Pacific.

But seriously, this game is well worth the wait.
I'm curious what the map scale is and what the time per turn is. Shayne?

Just played my first non solitaire game today. I cannot wait to play again. This game is what I want in small unit tactical combat at this level and complexity. Enormous amounts of fun and a beautiful game. As Kev Sharp said, the scenario's, at least the one I played, was a true down and dirty knife fight.
I've been waiting on the VASSAL mod. I got my box a couple weeks ago, but don't have any room to set up the board at the moment. Not necessarily a bad problem to have (since the large boards are awesome), but I'm impatient to play :D
