I think in this case plaid = flannel shirts ala Grunge.

I started wearing flannel in elementary school in the 1960s.  Never stopped wearing plaid flannel shirts (LL Bean ones last forever - and then make great shotgun cleaning rags).  Then in the 1990s my undergraduate college students occasionally said I was trying to "be like them" when they saw me wearing flannel plaid on non-teaching days.  Then 2000 hit and the comments stopped.  I still wear plaid when it is cold.

My wife HATES my plaid long-sleeve shirts. She tries to hide them from me but you can't hide plaid.

I'm a tail-end boomer, born in the early 1960s.  We wore plaid flannel shirts in high school in the 1970s.  I grew up in the mild climate of southern California, so we could get through winter with jeans, a t-shirt, and a flannel.  I had straight blond hair in high school and looked like Kurt Cobain 15 years before he came onto the scene.

Really comfortable.
