How does the discount from owning shock force 1 work ?  Do I buy it from bfc to get the discount, then get a steam key ?  Or can I buy it from steam and also get the shock force 1 discount ?

Yes, the Upgrade from Shock Force 1 to Shock Force 2 is only available from Battlefront. All license keys (both previously issued and future purchases) are in their system to get Steam keys.

The Help Desk has had a lot of action this today. Almost everything is that people aren't aware of these instructions for getting their Steam keys. If the Admins here don't mind I'm re-posting the instructions here:

QuoteHi guys,

We're very pleased to be working with Battlefront and know many of you are eagerly anticipating the release of Combat Mission. We wanted to give you some details on how things will work and both teams will do their best to make this process as painless as possible for you all to get your games working on Steam.

·        Steam keys will be available to anybody who purchased the game, no matter where they purchased. All users will get steam keys by creating an account with Matrix/Slitherine to redeem a steam key. The reason for this is Matrix already have a process to distribute the keys and Battlefront didn't and it would have been a lot of work for them to create such as system so it felt simpler to use a system that already works. Sorry for the inconvenience of anyone who needs to create an account because of this.
·        Once you have an account you can redeem Steam keys in the normal way by following these instructions - https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=93585
·        Note that if you bought a bundle from Battlefront you will only have one serial for all the games in the bundle. To redeem all the pieces of your bundle as Steam keys you will need to register that serial for each part of the bundle. E.g. if you purchased the base game and British Forces bundle you would register that serial twice, once to the base game and once to the DLC. Each will generate a unique Steam key for that piece of content on Steam and must be redeemed on Steam separately.
·        When purchasing a bundle on Matrix/Slitherine you will receive a serial for each part separately.
·        The versions on Matrix, Battlefront and Steam are identical apart from some minor changes to make the game compatible with Steam. Steam requires all the game content to be in the install folder so the placement of some files will be different to the Battlefront version but this is all behind the scenes and the features are identical. Multiplayer is possible between versions.
·        Customers who buy from Matrix/Slitherine will have access to the Matrix installer and a Steam key. Customers who buy from Battlefront will have access to the Battlefront version and Steam key. Matrix/Slitherine customers will not have access to the Battlefront version and vice versa.
·        Any Steam key redemption issues should be reported to the Matrix forum, as Battlefront are not able to help with that.
·        Other tech support should be requested at your point of purchase but both companies will try and help out anyone who has an issue if they can. Obviously any order issues can only be investigated by the site you purchased from as neither company has access to that kind of info for the other.
·        If you have any questions or problems please let us know and we will do our best to help.

If anyone runs into any trouble with using their Battlefront key to get a Steam key please don't be shy about opening a Help Desk ticket.

Gives an error 500 right now.

ETA: now a 404.

I own CMSF1, modules and "CMSF1 Big Bundle Upgrade CMSF1-UPB2".

Does that mean I have CMSF1 engine 4.0 or do I own CMSF2?

If you own "CMSF1 Big Bundle Upgrade CMSF1-UPB2" then you own CMSF2. Use the Upgrade's key to get the Steam keys (if that's what you wanted to do).

Thank you, now I remember, CMSF 4.0 == CMSF2.

I did the keys dance and it went flawlessly from BFC to Matrix and from there to Steam keys. Thank you.

ETA: as a nice extra I discovered I can also get a steam key for my TOAW4.

The Help Desk has had a lot of action this today. Almost everything is that people aren't aware of these instructions for getting their Steam keys.

To be fair, the instructions you shared are not super clear for people who bought the game through BF.  The 3rd bullet mostly relies on people being tech-savvy enough to decipher and figure out the appropriate serial key to use, especially if you own multiple keys from owning the game pre-4.0.  I thought Matrix/Slitherine hired a tech writer some time back to help with this kind of thing, but I guess their focus is on the manuals and not customer communications with instructions.
A War of a Madman's Making - a text-based war planning and political survival RPG

It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge.  War endures.  As well ask men what they think of stone.  War was always here.  Before man was, war waited for him.  The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.  That is the way it was and will be.  That way and not some other way.

If they made nothing but WWII games, I'd be perfectly content.  Hypothetical matchups from alternate history 1980s, asymmetrical US-bashes-some-3rd world guerillas, or minor wars between Upper Bumblescum and outer Kaboomistan hold no appeal for me.

I guess it's sort of nice that the word "tactical" seems to refer to some kind of seriousness during your moments of mental clarity.

I need to say this again:

This link from your post:
https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=93585

Points to:

which gives error 500 or 404 depending on time of day.

That's not gonna help the help desk :-)

The correct, direct link to enter your BFS serial into Matrix' system is:

https://www.slitherine.com/member/registerserial

Somebody needs to edit that post on matrix' forum.

Thank you! I'm going to change it on our forum. (what is currently up is what was sent to me to post). Using your link I found that I had to be logged in for it to work.  Although the people that I know that have trouble with the link in the current post are you and I. I got the 404 message like you did but no one else here or on the Battlefront forum have mentioned it. HHHmmmmm............Better reach out to Slitherine before I change anything. :-)

I almost posted a reply to a review yesterday because I took personal exception to it.  :) After rethinking it I didn't. He said no Battlefront employee had posted on the Battlefront forums for months.  :)

RyanE

Lets be a little fair to him.  There was a pretty dark period where no one posted updates or roadmaps, or really anything outside basic tech support.  It was a pretty long period of time.  If he happned to visit there a year or so ago, he might have only seen that really long thread complaining about it.

The other thing to be fair about is that BFC never announces personnel changes or changing roles.  That's OK for internal roles, but customer roles should be spelled out.  IIRC, it eventually was announced, but a while after you were already doing the role.

BFC  regulars never think about how the forum is perceived by people who might only pop in every few months just to see whats going on.  BFC rarely communicates outside the forum, so you have to know where to look.  And without the regular visit, there are a lot of people who might not catch the change from player to beta tester to employee.

I'm rolling up on 2 years full time. I was mostly joking when I posted what I said but there isn't a reason "to be fair". He posted the review yesterday and made a point of saying that in his review. If he'd said "I stopped going to the forums long ago because I felt that employees rarely post there", then I feel like I'd need to be fair. It's actually the reviewer who was unfair by saying something that is demonstrably not true, wouldn't you agree?

IIRC, it eventually was announced, but a while after you were already doing the role.

Maybe they wanted to make sure I was a keeper before saying anything. It's be awkward if they announced me and blew me out a month later. :-)

As far as his opinions about the game itself I have absolutely no problem with what he said. His subjective thoughts are just as valid as mine or yours.

RyanE

As I said, before you showed up as full time employee.  His statement is very true.  There was almost an entire year of no one from BFC posting.  So that part is fair from his perspective.  BFC didn't suddenly start operating when you became an employee.

So you don't remember anything about that long thread with even beta testers complaining about the absence of updates and communications from BFC?

Hells yeah. Exactly what I was looking at. I wonder how much I am looking at because I own all the CMSF1 bundles.
