Title: Field of Glory - Medieval Competition
Post by: Boggit on January 05, 2021, 09:18:58 PM
Hi all,

Paolo at Slitherine has kindly agreed to sponsor a FOG - Medieval competition to start on 4th February when the game is officially released.

If you're interested, let me know on this thread.

I intend to run this as a league competition.

When I have the numbers for the competition I will contact Paolo and arrange for you to get your Steam codes to participate.

BTW, I have a preview copy of the game and I can honestly say that the graphics are really NICE. The game mechanics are very similar to FoG 2 and is a very solid game.

This should be a lot of fun. O0

What sort of competition? How many games are we talking? Time frame? I'm guessing it would be using the PBEM++ thing?
As a long time DBA and DBM and HoTT player I like FoG II and am certainly interested in FoG Medieval.
I'm interested but want to make sure I can do it.

If you've played FOG2 you will have no problem at all. The mechanics are virtually the same as far as I can tell.

I have only just started recruiting to the competition, but I think this will be done on a league basis if we get enough players. 0 points for a loss, 1 for a draw and 2 for a Win.

Are you in?

I'll give it a shot. I've played FoG II some, but make no claim to any great skill at it lol!
Haven't tried it vs human opponents yet so that should be interesting.

I'll close off recruitment on 3rd and ask Paolo for your copies. I'll then set up pairings.

I remember playing a Slitherine FoG competition where everyone used the same army of their choice throughout the league. Is that something you'd enjoy, or to select a different army each time you play a new opponent?

I guess if we can choose each time we'll get to see more of the game and possibly more interesting or unusual matchups ;)

Either way works for me, really.

Thanks again for setting things up.

Ideally complete a game a week, as it is a competition, but obviously everyone has real life issues too. I'm terrible for this, so I won't sit in judgment! ::)

A game a week is something to aim for, and maybe sorted by arranging a time with your opponent to play several or all turns in one setting if time generally is at a premium.

As with all these things play it by ear. Some people will do quick returns, some not. If things become a problem, don't be silent, talk about it, we can usually find a solution. :)

Ground rules

Player Matching

We have possibly 11 players so far, which I have divided into two divisions

Division 1

Shelldrake
Matt3916
Sauron
Nelmsm
Paolo
Yskonyn

Division 2
Tripoli
Bardolph
al_infierno
Grim_Reaper
Gus (TBC)

1. Everybody plays everybody else on their division
2, The top three players in a division go into the semi final
3. The semi final winners play the final

Battles

All games are custom battles

Game size

Large

Maps

Map type  - "Pot luck" or by informal agreement with opponent

Scenario

Open Battle or by informal agreement with opponent

Army Choice

Up to the player. Allies are permitted if available to that army list.

The player army choice can be changed at the outset of each game with a new opponent.

Scoring

Win 3 points
Draw 1 point
Loss 0 points

Update your running score tally on your division table on this thread. (Cut and paste the latest division scores and then the winner/draw updates your their score. So for example...

Division 1

Shelldrake 3
Matt3916   1
Sauron      1
Nelmsm    0
Paolo        0
Yskonyn    3

I think I've covered the relevant points, but as usual if I've missed something, or there is an issue please don't be shy and let me know! :smiley6600:

Feel free to post screenshots/AARS.

In the spirit of the "Colosseum" - just for fun, we must have bragging rights! >:D

All participants can add "Gladiator" to their Grogheads profile.

Draws allow you replace that with "Retiarius";

Battle winners can replace "Gladiator/Retiarius" with "Secutor", and if you make it to the semi finals you can replace "Secutor" with "Myrmidon";

Competition winners get the right to "Rudiarius" on their profile!

Give it a try. If you find it gets to be too much time for you, withdraw with honour and allow your opponent to get a win. At least you will have had some fun. :)

Do you have a copy of the game, if not I'll ask for another steam code? No problem there.

Nice! I see I start with 3 points off the bat! Not bad!

Oh.. how does the sponsorship work? I need to install the game before I can play. I assume it'll be a timed license of sorts?
Title: Re: Field of Glory - Medieval Competition
Post by: Boggit on February 04, 2021, 12:02:00 PM
LOL!  ;D

The sponsorship works this way...

Slitherine have kindly offered to provide gratis copies of the game via Steam codes for participants who have not already got the game.

Slitherine have also kindly offered to provide prizes for the winner and the runner up.

As with all our sponsors, I am very grateful for them for facilitating the competition as comprehensively as they do.

I assume it'll be a timed license of sorts?
No. Like our other sponsored competitions, Slitherine is generously providing the full game for the player to keep as part of their sponsorship.

The only good faith obligation for the player is to compete in the competition.

I assume we pair off against the next name down on the list in our Division?  I'm in Division 2, so that means I'd be paired off against Bardolph.  Boggit-One question: Are these paired battles, ie, both sets of players play each side of a single battle, or is it just one battle?

You can simultaneously play everyone in your division, Iíd reckon. Otherwise this comp will take a year or so. :)

You play a single (different) battle with everyone in your Division. If there are six players in your Division you play five battles. It sounds a lot, but these games play fairly quickly, especially if you play all your games contemporaneously.

The three winners go onto the semi finals, and the winners of those go to the finals.

I agree that is the best way to play the competition. O0 I don't think the games themselves should take too long, especially if you can play several turns at a sitting. Very few games in my experience continue all the way to turn 23, most ending within 10-15 turns.

Yes, Paolo and the guys at Slitherine have been very kind to us. :smitten:

Not quite. That is for the first round. You play everyone in your Division only at this stage.

The top three from each Division then go into the semi final as one semi final Division of six, and the two highest scorers from there go onto the final. (i.e. 11 players to 6 to 2). I hope I've explained that in a meaningful way? :) If it still doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to rephrase it so we're on the same page.

Paolo has emailed me that there is an issue that "due to some technical issues, some of the keys we sent for Field of Glory II Medieval have been revoked."

Sorry for the delay. As with all technical issues I am sure this will be resolved by Slitherine as soon as they are able. I will keep you posted as soon as I hear more.

General heads up, but I'd recommend not using the Pot Luck (random) feature for picking teams in tournament games unless you really know what you're doing.  The first game I started picked Lithuania versus German North/West, which I'm sure an experienced player could pull off, but their army lists looked laughably one sided.  You're probably best off picking two armies who you know will be somewhat evenly matched, like England and France.

EDIT: Having tested an AI battle as Germany against Lithuania, it's actually not nearly the pushover I imagined.  It certainly takes some tactics to make up for the lack of heavily armored knights, but they seem to have their own advantages with their selection of skirmisher type units.  If I get totally clobbered by under_score I'll probably stick with someone easier for future games :buck2:

Don't worry I'm here! Thanks for thinking about me! :)

As you know we have had a delay with the codes. Paolo has asked me for the number of codes needed for participants, so if you are

1. already signed up; and

2. still need a Steam key; then

Please let me know on this thread. I have told Paolo that I'll leave it a few days to give people a chance to reply.

As things have dragged on a bit now, I don't want to hang about, so if you still need a key to play let me know by Wednesday latest!

I'll be contacting him Thursday and hopefully (fingers crossed) will have keys to everyone needing them within a day or so.

I got an email today saying that one contender could not choose his own army from the challenge received.

I've set up another challenge as a test for him. I set up a skirmish and whilst I set up my choice, I left his alone on Pot Luck.

Is anyone else having the issue of receiving a challenge, but not getting to choose their army of choice?

I also had this happen with my private MP game with Al_Infierno.

It may be that we're doing something wrong in the set up method, or it may be a technical glitch?

@Al_infierno:
I'm happy to play any army with you in any case, but to help figure out what is going on did you select on my behalf or leave this as Pot Luck? Cheers! Boggit. :)

I chose Pot Luck for both of us, and it picked random armies for us both.  I'm pretty sure whoever issues the challenge needs to ask the other player what their army preference is, and choose it for them when setting up the challenge.  Pot Luck seems to mean "random army."

I made random armies for all my challenges. Its a fun way to do things, for me at least.
The system pairs armies from the same period, so whats the issue exactly?

I think this is exactly what is happening. I think your advice if people want to play a particular army is sound. :)

I understand what you say. I can see your method can be fun, but some people want to be specific as to the army they play, which is the issue for them.

I think the solution is as Al_infierno says; to agree armies beforehand with their opponent, or agree pot luck if they don't mind what army they are to play. That way a game can be specific army matches, pot luck or a specific army vs pot luck.

If I'm in your division then please start up a game and send it my way so I can get the ass kicking I have coming out of the way.  You can reach me at melmsm@att.net

Is that a typo (m instead of n) in your email address?

No it's right now I have it. The AT&T guy who set it up wasn't the brightest bulb in the box and I was too lazy to change it

Bardolph and I finished up our battle today.  My Normans defeated his French.  It was a too chaotic thing for me to try to write up a good battle report like Tripoli did.  In general, we both sent our horsemen wide and infantry in the center so that we ended up with three pretty distinct battles going on.  The most noticeable thing for me was that my infantry fought like hell, managing to hold morale longer than expected.  The French, on the other hand, were rally masters.  I grew to dread the sound of those trumpets.  But with the center secured, I was able to divert enough troops to either flanks to keep both in play and grind out a very bloody win.  In the end, our losses were 60% to 50%, and the battlefield is littered with the dead.
Probably the most fun battle I've fought yet.  Thanks for a great game Bardolph.

Does anyone know the best way to fine tune the mouse pointer?  I really struggle with it waving all over the place.

Found the answer.  Need to turn shadows to off or low.

Finished up the battle with under_score.  It was a clear decisive victory for his forces (German) over mine (Lithuanian).  In fairness, I had no idea what I was really doing with my poor pixel knights, but I played a battle or two in reverse beforehand (using the Germans versus Lithuanians) and thought I had a decent idea of what to do.  Something something, battle plan surviving contact with enemy?  :buck2:

Good game and well played, will try and get my turns in more regularly in the future.

nelmsm and I just finished our game.

My spear carrying Norwegians routed nelmsm's cavalry-heavy Lithuanian force after Norwegian spearmen turning one flank and huscarls rampaged through a line of skirmishers at the centre. I think that nelmsm's cavalry was handicapped by the small map size that did not give him any room for maneuver and flanking attacks. A different force mix could have changed to outcome. I just got lucky with the pot luck this time!

According to the after action summary, my Norwegians only had a 2-3:1 advantage in killed/wounded. However, almost half the Lithuanian force were listed as captured/deserted. Unit morale clearly plays a huge role in victory or defeat in this game.

Thanks for the game nelmsm!

Gentlemen - to save me trawling through every post and possibly getting your score wrong, can you please keep a log of your score and post it in this format... That way we can set up the winners for round 1 into the division for round two. I hope you're all enjoying the competition.  :)

Scoring is Win =3

e.g.

Sauron
Nelmsm
Paolo
Yskonyn

Division 2

Grim_Reaper
Gus (TBC)

Just a note for Paolo and Shelldrake...

Sauron phoned me to say (amongst other things...  ::)) that he has had a serious problem with his computer, which is why he is out of touch. It is now at the repair shop and he expects it to be returned in about a week.

He forwards his apology for the delay, and is eager to return to the fight as soon as he is able.

@Everyone else...

I hope your games are going well and you're having fun. :bd: Any ideas or improvements to running future competitions are gratefully received! It's a learning curve for me too, and I want to be able to organise competitions you really enjoy. O0

Thanks Boggit. My current game with matt is turning into a nail biter. Same with my game with Sauron so looking forward to getting back into it.

No worries!

Sauron hopes that with a bit of luck he'll have his PC back in a few more days.

Glad you're having fun.

Apologied for the radio silence. I had some tech issues. Seem to be resolved now.

Setup a game for matt now.

The game against Shelldrake shows up as 'completed' for me for some reason. I can load the game still and it shows me my last move. No idea why it is flagged as completed, cause I am pretty sure it wasn't. So Shelldrake, if you could please check your games under 'completed' and see if we can resume.

Apologies for posting late.  Tripoli should be updated to 3, 3, 3 (9).   I'm not sure who I play next for the semi finals.  I'll get an AAR done of the last game and get it posted in the next day or so.  R/L is interfering with my hobbies again >:(

I noticed that today - not sure why the server has flagged the game as completed. Since we did not get that far into the game I think it is easier just to start again. Can you issue the challenge?

Sauron has just let me know that he's still waiting for his computer to be repaired. He hopes he will get it back next week, but thinks that existing games will expire in the lobby and will need to restart challenges.

I am having a few fights with the turn system. Two games have been flagged as completed, of which one has been restarted. Still unclear why this happened.

If I am correct, all my opponents are now up. All games in progress. If its not correct, please drop me a PM or post here.

Sauron let me know... his rig was not fixed by the repair shop and remains useless. HOWEVER, he got a new rig elsewhere - a much better one - and is starting to reinstall all his stuff on the new rig.

For those yet to fight, or were in process please DM him and he should be able to respond quite soon.

Now that  COVID restrictions are being lifted all over the place, my airline has restarted operations and began to upscale production again. As a result I have been trained extensively to get up to standard again. As the pool of available pilots has yet to grow, those who are now ready also have a full roster.

I am fighting for time off here and I feel I am now outside of a comfortable window to play this tournament any further.
I would like to respectfully withdraw from it to prevent any delays in the progress. All my opponents can write a win on their account, please.

Thanks again for setting this up!
And good luck to everyone involved.
