In software engineering the second 80% after the first 80% take substantially longer :)

Especially when bosses think that since you're almost done they can ask for new features.

Quote from: CaptainKoloth on June 25, 2024, 09:13:33 PMFINALLY! I've been waiting for a new Korean War game since MiG Alley!

Exactly what I was thinking, too, Mig Alley! If you never had the privilege of playing Mig Alley (2000) by Rowan Software here are some contemporary reviews of that game.

Bruce Geryk (although by line says Bruce Grey) writing for GameSpot,  May 1, 2000.

Jeff Lackey writing for Computer Gaming World magazine, February 2000, pages 150-151.

MIG Alley was a great game! Really loved the dynamic campaign.

Unrivaled to this day. I'd be shocked if this title is able to meet or exceed the very high bar set so long ago. They just don't make them like they used to.

Not played Mig Alley but was a regular player of Wings Over Vietnam which had some Sabre mods which worked well with the early Migs in the core game - was great flying fast jets with cannons.

This is very exciting news!

OT: is their WW1 offering any good? Mixed steam reviews.

Well...it depends.  As an actual recreation of the experience of flying a WW1 crate I think it is very good, especially in VR.  Everything in the air looks good. The planes have the individual sorts of quirks in their flight characteristics that the real ones were reported to have.  They have done a great job of making you feel like you're flying.

As a game, I can only speak about the MP experience.  This is fantastic if you're prepared to learn and/or join a squad.  There is nothing like getting involved in a big furball among the clouds, it's a truly wonderful experience.  Problem is (imho) there is a steep learning curve and many people quickly get fed up of being repeatedly hacked out of the sky by a few people with thousands of hours in game (historical realism right there!) with the result that the few servers are not very populated.

I don't know about SP, but I believe there are some campaigns and careers.

I would say, if you're interested, pick up Flying Circus 1 on sale.  I think you'll get your money's worth in terms of learning the different crates, doing some SP stuff and maybe going online.

This has come across a bit negative, I know.  FC has been far away my most played game for the last three years and I love it, but I can tell it won't be for everyone.

I'm plagiarizing someone ( can't remember who) when they said something along the lines of "If you want to experience what it's like to fly a WWI era aircraft in combat, buy Flying Circus.  If you want to experience what it was like to be a pilot in WWI, buy Over Flanders Fields."

Flying Circus is basically Rise of Flight inserted into the newer IL-2 engine.  The planes are fun to fly and each offers up their own quirks and challenges to overcome.  There aren't nearly as many available as their were in Rise of Flight and you have to buy all 3 volumes of Flying Circus in order to access all the planes they currently do have on offer.  It integrates with all the other IL-2 titles, for what that's worth (if you really want to see what a Tempest can do to a flight of Gotha bombers, you can try it out.).

Mostly, the newer engine offers a lot of improvements, but there are a couple areas where it's not as good as Rise of Flight was.  Some of the sounds aren't as good in Flying Circus as in Rise of Flight.  You don't really get to hear your crate creaking and straining from G-forces nor do you get to hear the wind whistling past the wires on the wings.  MGs and engines still sound good though.  The damage model is also a bit of a step back.  You don't get to see canvas ripping and wings gently warping as the stanchions and wires snap.  Wings just kind of snap or shear off now.  You also don't get the effects of castor oil and soot smearing your goggles like you did in Rise of Flight.  Fire effects and engine damage are better with the new engine though.

Unlike Ted, I mostly play single player (MP servers aren't very well populated and they tend to mostly be on Europe time so I rarely see more than 2-3 players in a server when I try to join.)  I'd say the single player aspect is a bit bare-bones (but that's always been the case with the IL-2/Rise of Flight series).  You can create a pilot, choose a squadron and a start date, and then the game will take you through a day-by-day campaign of semi-randomly generated missions.  I enjoy them but they can sometimes get a bit repetitive  (I once had more than a dozen "attack the V1 launch site" missions in a row while flying a Typhoon campaign in IL-2: Normandy) and they tend to be small in scale.  You'll likely never run into more than 8 enemy planes at once.

I'd echo Ted.  If you're at all interested, pick up a copy of Vol I when it's on sale.  You can always pick up more volumes later if it turns out to be something you enjoy.

Speaking of Over Flanders Field...wonder if they are still working on Wings Over the Reich.

Last update was back in February but they have largely turned their attention back to a new major version for WOFF.  Although they did indicate the following after the WOFF release.

After the release of WOFF, we WILL have a large update for WOTR! It will be using the new visual enhancements and other additions that we have created for WOFF!

That will be likely be FREE. We can't release details of that yet as WOFF BH&H II Expansion / DLC is not out and full features are not released.

Is Flying Circus as arcade as they make it sound?

I said I buy it, not that I play it :)

Seriously, didn't have a minute yet. Will update.

Not at all.  It's a full fidelity flight sim.  You have the option to turn on aids lime a HUD if you want but you can (and should) fly in full realism, cockpit-only view.

Looking good...looking damn good. I love these early Cold War era jets.
