This movie does not look too bad. But then again Napoleon did not look bad either.

Overall good cast, but I'm afraid it is going to suck. Gladiator was one of those classic, timeless films. I think they should have just left it alone.

I don't really understand the plot yet. With Commodus dead, how the hell did Lucius, the heir to the Roman Empire, end up in hiding in Numidia and then ultimately a slave turned gladiator? Seems like the writers had to stretch a lot of plausible boundaries just to set up another confrontation between a slave turned gladiator and the emperor...or this time, emperors.

For Ridley Scott I am willing to suspend my disbelief.

That said, I have not seen Napoleon yet.

+1 agree. But will be happy if I am wrong.

Yeah, not getting a warm, fuzzy feeling about this one either. I'm thinking it will be hand-cuffed enough to the first film that it feels like a retread, and having to be different enough to be full of implausible plot twists. But we can hope can't we?

Come on now. It's got Denzel! That alone should be worth the price of admission.

next time he asks, "Are you not entertained?" He may not get the answer he was hoping for.  :twirl:

Ridley Scott knew just the way to get my butt in the seat: Naval gladiator battle.
A War of a Madman's Making - a text-based war planning and political survival RPG

It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge.  War endures.  As well ask men what they think of stone.  War was always here.  Before man was, war waited for him.  The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.  That is the way it was and will be.  That way and not some other way.

If they made nothing but WWII games, I'd be perfectly content.  Hypothetical matchups from alternate history 1980s, asymmetrical US-bashes-some-3rd world guerillas, or minor wars between Upper Bumblescum and outer Kaboomistan hold no appeal for me.

I guess it's sort of nice that the word "tactical" seems to refer to some kind of seriousness during your moments of mental clarity.

Napoleon REALLY REALLY sucked imho. The movie should have been called Napoleon and Josephine. I cringed through a lot of scenes and a lot of the movie was ahistorical. Not the Napoleon that his troops were inspired by that's for sure.
I guess we were spoiled with Sharpes TV series and Hornblower for the period. Nobody seems to make good napoleonic movies. Waterloo was the one shining light for the period. War and Peace is usually pretty passe and the Napoleon TV series with Gerard Depardu while ok tried to show to much at once.

I am also afraid it's going to suck. But the trailer at least did look amazing. I just hope the movie is engaging.
The lead actor looks nothing like a champion gladiator I am afraid. Russel Crowe pulled that off admirably in the original film. This new guy looks pretty average as the arenas talent goes. A but dweebish against huge best of the best types. I like Denzil Washington as an actor as well, he will have to carry this one I think.
