Quote from: Destraex on September 04, 2024, 05:26:47 PMHe got a free copy this time around  iirc which he said almost never happens because he is honest in his videos.

I don't always agree with him, but I do believe he is honest with his reviews.

He seems honest and I have no problem there.  But he is not a 40k expert and has not played the campaign to completion I don't think. To my mind that means his review is lesser than an 40k expert who has completed the game
I suspect he got a key because anything associated with 40k right now needs some serious credibility attached. That whole henry cavil and custodes controversy coupled with the primaris saltiness needs somebody with an even hand who is trusted to guarantee the game will not do something to upset fans further.
He needed to play the whole campaign to verify that for purist 40k fans as well as having knowledge to spot any lore issues.

^his review is far from the only one claiming this is good enough to be GOTY. Maybe he got a key because he is honest, is very hard to please and the developers are very confident in the game they've made. It's not like they whisked him off to the UK for an all expense paid trip to GW HQ like Disney did with content producers for Star Wars Outlaw.

Exactly. He is trustworthy but trusted expert complete reviews are needed. You say they exist and are predicting sm2 as goty. Sounds like it is amazing. I am playing through sm1 again atm and really enjoying my squat marine adventure.

Has anyone seen any mention of whether the game has friendly fire or not?

Edit - Saw a Q&A response that confirmed no friendly fire in any of the game modes.

Unfortunately, a lot of FPS lack the realism of friendly fire due to the really friendly firing types that team kill very deliberately.   Maybe a mod for drumhead court martial then dancing Danny Deever might solve this problem.

I'd prefer if it was as skill based as possible. I'd rather friendly fire.

I don't see how friendly fire could realistically work in a game like this. Given the tyranid enemies that form into overwhelming mobs combined with the mix of ranged and close quarters combat, I think FF would be a nightmare.

Reviewer bias or experience questions aside
Anyone here actually playing it?
I am a big fan of 40k but prefer more of the tactical turn based games not first person shooters
I love the look but not sure I would want to play the coop where it seems most of the value of the game lies after finishing the campaign
Someone convince me differently

Codes for EA are not out yet. I think 12:00 EST.

Which is why Space Hulk.

Though come to think of it, I can't recall if the recent L4D-ish version of SH (as a clunky shooter) had friendly fire.

Fireteam elite and space hulk enhanced also had friendly fire.

It's comical but just as space marine 2 releases an episode on warhammer tv with female custodes also released and now there is a tonne of turmoil around that as well. I think space marine 2's release will drown out that noise though.

I love 40k but hate all the politics that is now growing around it. Until Amazon and Henry Cavil talked about doing a tv series. I don't remember any politics affecting it. It's a real shame, but like anything that becomes popular, it seems to become a political football for competing interests.

Unfortunately, I had a bunch of crap come up on release day, so I only had a chance to play through the opening "prologue" before I had to call it a day. So far, all production values are near perfect 10s across the board. Graphics, sound, the cut-scenes, the story, the way the game is optimized and runs etc. All very well done. The combat mechanics are fairly simple,  but I'm not sure I love the initial controller settings, so I may end up tweaking those over time. The button combos for me do not feel entirely intuitive, so I've had some trouble remembering what to press in the thick of the action when quick reaction is required. One other thing that was pretty jarring at times during the opening sequence was the very linear progression across the map. I'm hoping this was just because it served as a tutorial taking the player from section to section in order to teach a new concept, but there were a lot of invisible walls where I wouldn't expect any and the play area was very small overall. While this is not an open world, I'm hopeful maps will open up a little in order to give the player some room to explore the beautiful world and to maneuver during combat.

I just want to make a note about how well the game runs. It doesn't seem to utilize a lot of resources, or if it does, it uses them well. My rig stays very cool during play and runs very smoothly at ultra settings. I'm running it on my i9 14th gen with a 4080gpu and 64GB of ram. I feel like my 3080ti would run it very well too.

In any event, so far pretty much exactly what I expected. 40k for me is like Star Wars for some of you guys. The game is very good,  but it gets a few extra points in my book just because I love 40k, and especially the space marines.

Unfortunately 40K has a lot of overt partisanship based on the fact that it is a game that explicitly deals with a fascist/religious and xenophobic cultures.  There are plenty of small minded but very vocal players that identify strongly with a playstyle and forget that its a game.  One thing on 40K is that the books are in my opinion not misogynistic there are strong female characters if you read the books but it is weighted mostly to a male audience.  That attracts a certain level of unsavory attitude by some people as well.

That aside - waiting to hear playing impressions - I want to get it but coop multiplayer is about the furthest thing that I normally play now.  If that is where you have to go to get the fun in this then I might give it a miss.  (I hate playing with people I dont know and I almost never can organize a time that works to play with people I do know).
