All:
We've hired a professional to do some housekeeping, upgrading and enhancing of the site. You may notice some irregularities, errors, warnings, etc. while this process is ongoing.
The end result will benefit everyone!
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Test post. This is only a test post.
Oh dear.
I feel like I've taken drugs! My world is spinning!
Definitely going to take some getting used to, but it is much cleaner and more streamlined. Also, more mobile friendly...and the best part?
We have a stripper!
:privatedancer:
Finally :afro:

Quick, someone check if Spock has a goatee!
Maybe it's just because I'm old, and hate change, but the new forum look is much more glaring to me than the prior one. Any chance of a dark mode in the future?
it is rather bright.
Nothing is finalized yet. The first goal is to stabilize, secure and modernize the forum. Then we will focus on look, aesthetics and functionality.
All of your feedback is appreciated.
It's very organized. Plus nice abundance of smileys.
:cthulhu_smiley: approves
This is officially the best emoji: :jarhead0331:

Let's stay focused on the important things. Now, JH, what about the stripper?
any way to directly link twitter type stuff the same way youtube is handled?

Probably, but would require a mod or add-on. I'll look for one.
All our old smilies are back! :twirl:

I don't use Twitter so I really do not know how tweets work, but I updated the latest version of the auto tweet embedder for the forum so it should be able to be done. Give it a try I guess.

Will need some time to get used to this
So yesterday afternoon I decided to take the plunge into Windows 11. Went fairly smoothly...some new things to get used to.
This morning I went to check Grogheads. Had to do the username/password logon. I thought it a little odd that Windows 11 had changed the look of the forum so much...and then I saw this thread. :uglystupid2:
One thing I did notice when I logged in, was I was limited to staying logged in for only 30 days...no more 'infinite' logons???

"Forever" is the first option in the pull-down box for me. Check again. It should be there.
Are our avatar images actually gone or is it just my personal settings?
Quote from: Gusington on January 13, 2023, 10:44:33 AMAre our avatar images actually gone or is it just my personal settings?
I see them all. Must be your settings.
Hmm, ok...(starts futzing)
I can see everyone's avatar, too, without any adjustment.

I think what you're looking for is Area 51...

Yup, 'forever' was there. I'm going to blame my eyeglasses...
Question. Are the stripper and the professional housekeeper the same person? Because we could probably get away with only paying her once for both jobs. :nono2:
I absolutely love this new setup. Great job guys.
The stripper/housekeeper is in the union, so no shenanigans.
Or saucy French Maid outfits.
I must admit that I do miss the previous start view I had that included the most recent unread posts in a top window followed by the categorized forum list in a second window right below it. This allowed me to quickly determine if there were any new posts I hadn't read - if not - quickly nav to the Computer Games section if nothing showed up top. Can still accomplish the same thing in the new look/feel, just have to separately click to do so. Not a show stopper - just a change to something I was previously comfortable with and found handy....
Also, the non-collapsible and non-movable links section on the top of the forum page takes up prime real estate, and after having been on the forum a while, having it always up top is less than ideal IMHO if it can't be collapsed...
So I'm "Kinda" finding Grog areas I like that got moved around with the site revamping, but find it a bit scattered. Some unsolicited thoughts after a bit of time in the new dimension:
- Latest Posts - Used to be in a top window on the page and was where I always looked first before. Now, the closes section I can find is in the "GrogHeads Forum - Info Center" panel which is unfortunately located on the very bottom of the page and cannot be moved higher on the page.
- Favorite Sections - Really wish we could "pin" favorite sections to appear up top...
- Favorite Threads - Similar to Favorite Sections, wish we could flag certain threads to always appear up top unless they are later unflagged.
- Easier editing - I am having to edit this list in code vs. visual editing. BGG used to be the same way, but you can now edit lists and tables inline visually vs. code. Wish we had that same capability. One year after a Matrix sale I tried to put up a table of what I bought and found it to be much more work than I had hoped for....
Anyway, just a few thoughts even though nobody asked.....
^Your first point is a priority of mine. I loved that recent post index at the top of the page. Unfortunately, that functionality was afforded by a modification and the author of the mod has not updated it since 2019 and it is no longer compatible with the current version of the forum software. We are looking at options and other possibilities, but in the end, the benefits of having updated the forum software FAR exceed the inconvenience posed by the loss of the recent post index.
All that being said, we are working on it and it is a personal priority of mine.
Thanks for all of your suggestions.
Users can click the 'Unread Posts' option in the top left and while it's not automatic, it's one click away.

Using the unread posts as always but it does take you to page one of the thread not the end - I know it's only another button click
Well that came out of the blue! Liking it!
and you dont have to spend $8 a month on a blue check mark!
I've made the Links section collapsible so if you don't like those cluttering the top of the page, you can close them out. Hopefully this helps.
The format for embedding youtube videos seems to have changed and videos posted before the forum update appear to be broken.
To embed a video, simply get the share link from youtube as previously and click the youtube button in the tool bar. Paste the link into the pop-up box and the code will automatically be written into the post. The url will look "off" but it works.
Yeah, the new site engineers will have to do a search for all {youtube} codes which have http: in them, and replace with only the id part of the code (or delete the code up to the id).
If that's even possible.

That isn't going to happen at the hourly rate we're paying the "new site engineers". If you need to fix a youtube link in one of your posts, we humbly ask that you do it yourself.
New site is looking great, also the new css now works with Dark Reader extension for dark mode, the work is much appreciated.

Yes, and I, for one, have been remiss in saying so, as well. My initial post was negative about the brightness. That issue still stands, but Dark Reader has alleviated that. I would still love a native dark mode, but the overall improvements to site functionality have been fantastic. The forum operation is really smooth now.
...and importantly, we're secure! No more redirects!
How does the dark reader work? I'd like to use it.
Sounds like a Goth Chick text-to-speech mode for Kindle or something like that.
Have appreciated everyone's efforts and glad things are proceeding nicely, really appreciate it. Only two things for me.
1) Does anyone else notice the inconsistency of being able to load posts, pages, and create/respond to messages? The experience for me before and after the upgrade is the same, often it will take a while to load things (or not at all), other times it will be instant. Don't believe it is my computer or browser as I have different browsers and I see the experience whether on my computer, tablet, or phone. Don't think I have seen others recently post on this so at times I think it is me, but I can't think how that would be since tried across many devices/browsers using different internet connections.
2) Like others, would love the recent posts back at the top of the screen instead of the bottom, but I do realize that won't be possible because of the tool used no longer being usable. Not a huge deal, just saved a little time.
Again, thanks for keeping the community going and the work is much appreciated!

Dark Reader is a popular browser extension for chrome, firefox, safari, edge, and I've used two modes with it:
1. you can have it default to leaving all sites alone unless you hit the dark reader extension button then it will apply dark mode to that site and remember for next time
2. or you can have it apply dark mode to all sites by default and then you can hit the button to leave the site you are on default colors and it will remember for next time.
It probably has a bunch of other features but those are just the two I've used, I use the laptop a lot in a dark room while the family is watching movies or even in bed at night after the wife has crashed out early and so it's a huge help for me.
Forgot to add, you can download it from your browser's extensions marketplace page where you will see the reviews for it, or their page and info is here:

Thanks Kludger. I have noticed some lag on my iPhone here, everything is fine on my home PC.

I get the same lag on phone and pc - some threads open instantly some will just hang and I sit there pressing the page number again and again and again just to annoy it into action - eventually it loads

Interesting I hadn't experienced any lag but checked their help page and indeed they mention this:
https://darkreader.org/help/en/
- Filter is the initial Dark Reader mode based on CSS filters. It inverts the whole page and reverts some parts back. Requires GPU resources. It is fast and powerful, but has several issues: it disables text sub-pixel rendering, inverts already dark parts into light, causes lags on large pages, and fails to render some pages in Firefox.
My laptop is a gaming laptop with a 3070 GPU and my PC also has a 3070 in it so that may be why I never noticed any slowness, I also noticed my theme mode is set to Dynamic, so I guess it's one of those cases of mileage may vary, hopefully they keep improving the performance so everyone benefits from it.

My performance issues were without dark reader. Just the default site, so not related.

Yup same here
Using phone - accidentally clicked on page 3 - instant load
Click on page 4 - 30 second wait
The lag on my iPhone today was particularly bad...could barely access the site. Fine on PC.
