Title: He-162 A-2 Salamander
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 08, 2023, 04:20:11 PM
I started making this months ago...and it's sat in it's current state for about 4 months or more.

So I decided to give it a kick this weekend - see if I could get back into the swing of things

This was the engine that came with it

I decided to jazz it up a bit with some copper electrical wire from my electrician neighbour

A bit of paint

Then I added some oil wash to grub it up a bit

I really need to get back into the scale hobby.

Keep blowing my money on ale and whores though.

Yeah - I got to an age where that wasn't a thing anymore - so the hobby came back to me

Nice work on the engine JD.  Those bits of copper wire really add to the effect.

Unfortunately, no.

I've been put off because I've attached the landing gear and so it's "open"...so I have to work out some way of making it so when I paint, I don't get paint inside the wheel bays or on the landing gear.

When I come across issues like this, it stops me in my tracks. I procrastinate.

It's sitting in my drawer. What's even more infuriating with my attitude (when things like this occur) is I stop modelling altogether. I won't do another model until I've finished it.

So modelling has stopped dead...all because I'm "scared" of getting a bit of paint inside the landing gear bays or on the landing gear.

So you've literally gotten "wrapped around the axel."   :magnify:

I'm sure someday the spirit will strike you again, and you'll finish it...

Jam tissue paper into the wheel well and put some masking tape over the top so that it is flush with the surface.  Use a knife to trim away the excess masking tape so that only the wheel well is covered. That should prevent any paint getting in.

This might help.  She does the tissue/masking thing with the cockpit starting at about 2:45 in the video.

I can be like that when it comes to gaming.  Eventually I return to try again but yeah, I can relate to this.

Thanks SDR

I do know the tricks though - it's just fiddly and an excuse for me walk away and go and play God of War or Longstreet Attacks

But - this thread has envigorated me. I'll get it done. There will be an update soon.

FINALLY...got some more progress on the Salamander

As soon as I did up the airbrush, I had a blockage...it's that kind of thing that gives me hives when I'm thinking about getting back to it. But...I soldiered on

Painting is my most stressful part...I love it, but hate it also. I have no idea why the airbrush decided to not spray. It was cleaned properly before hand. When I did get it cleaned, it was sputtering.

In the end, I had to revert to my trusty Iwata TRN1.

Got the model primes and then the blue underside done. I decided not to "push it" by applying masking tape to the freshly painted area on the same day to paint the upper side - but I am ready for the next bit. Heeby Jeebies have been set aside...until next time

Awesome. Love the engine!

I finally opened the box of my USS Kittyhawk and will order the paint and other pieces of kit I need in order to build the model.

Thanks guys. I love it...I genuinely love making them but I do get stressed when it comes to painting them.

The correct paint/thinner mix. Too runny, you get spidering. Too thick you get a blocked airbrush.

Then masking. And what bits to paint first "logically". I find it all quite stressful...but also really enjoy it.

Good news. I did make one carrier before. It was the U.S.S Ronald Reagan I think. Turned out really nice I thought. I enjoyed making that.

I also have the Bismark in my stash. But that's a big bugger so I'm leaving it as a retirement job.

Unfortunately, I can't find the images. I know I sold it on eBay, but they don't have my previous listings on there so I can't find the images.

I did find this image - but it's only really of the top of the model. I was taking a photo of my collection before I went on a selling binge.

I did also find my Jagdpanther, Chieftain and Leopard 1 - thought I'd post them before I lost the images forever.

I need to turn away from this hobby before it is too late. I simply would not have the room to store all of them. Between books, guns and ammo, I take up most of the house, shelves and closets. With a model collection, my wife's sanity would definitely be pushed over the edge.

I sold them all.

The only one I have left is my wee 1/72 Me-262 Airfix kit from the 1970s and my original series Enterprise 1701 which I didn't sell because my daughter got me them for my birthday.

I'll go out on this limb and say that you won't ever have the time to build that many models.  if you finish that carrier in a year I'll honestly be surprised.

Managed to get the green on...I think I've been sold a doozy by Vallejo - their Dark Green 71.011 is incredibly close (almost indistinguishable) to their Light Green 71.022

Anyway - next steps are protective coat, decals then wash and finally the guns and nose "pointy thing" and she's done

The painting isn't quite what I hoped for.

It's rough in places. I tried to hand paint that bit round the nose because it's curved...but I don't have a steady hand. Additionally, when I was doing the green, I had some overspray into the blue. So I tried to touch that up but the paint brush wasn't playing ball and - well, it was a bit of a pita...those are the reasons I don't like the painting aspect.

But I'll get the decals on and give it a dirty wash and hope that covers some of the blemishes.
