Title: Cars
Post by: GDS_Starfury on January 21, 2014, 05:20:59 PM
not really military but important enough as daily life equipment.
so lets start off with a pretty controversial car today, the 2014 Corvette.  I havnt been a fan of the Vette since the body style change in the early 80s.  I think all of the permutations since then have been pretty blah as well.  but the new one....  hmmm
Im still up in the air over it and Ive gotten to see a fair amount on the road over the last few months.  on the way home today there was one in dark British racing green with black wheels that looked incredible.

the basic profile has lots of Europe in it which I think is more gooder:

this is pretty much what I saw today:

Are all those cops in the back there to keep the 'Vette from getting picked on by the real European iron?

I like those new Corvettes, too. So does my wife; I'm hoping she doesn't get any ideas.

Meanwhile, if I had a spare $278,295 lying around, I'd go for one of these:

The convertible would be acceptable too.

keep in mind that it costs a fraction of what a European supercar costs though and delivers most of the performance.  with a little post purchase tuning it can be pretty competitive.

My boss's boss talks a lot about his Lotus. I want to say it's a Europa, a yellow one.

I understand. I'm 6'4". I just fit into my Camaro. I can't fit in Mustangs, though.

but we fit into Aston's!   ;D
Title: Re: Cars
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 21, 2014, 08:01:09 PM
Certainly would.

A few jobs back there was a really nice guy that worked in the same building I did, that owned an Aston. A friend of mine that was down in the lobby called me up and told me to get my ass down there quick. It was on the curb. He parked it there for the service guys to come pick it up and change the oil. He let me sit in the front seat, the owner. Made my day. I was afraid to touch anything, though. The leather seat alone that my big butt occupied probably costs more than the car I have now.

I have no problem going to an exotic car dealer and sitting my ass in anything.  theres certainly no lack of them down here and no one knows whos got money or not.
Title: Re: Cars
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 21, 2014, 08:05:57 PM
I told my boss about my fetish for Astons, and he told me I should go over to the dealership (there's only one in Houston) and get a test drive. I'd have to have titanic balls to do that. I'm thinking about it.
Title: Re: Cars
Post by: GDS_Starfury on January 21, 2014, 08:09:14 PM
do it!  consider...  its not like they sell tons of them, they have test drive mules and theres some bored ass salesman looking to go for a drive.  all they can say is no.  but if they say yes dont crash it.  ::)  I almost did that with a Lotus Esprit once and I might have made the sales guy shit his pants.
Title: Re: Cars
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 21, 2014, 08:10:59 PM
Well hell, if the speedometer says '140', you're test driving it dammit. You need to know for sure!

I love the Esprit, too, ever since Roger Moore used it in The Spy Who Loved Me.

I see these driving around a lot.  Im happy to say that the owners seem happy to step on it.  Lambo drivers dont seem to do that much.

Yup. The only Lamborghinis I've ever seen were in Los Angeles, and they drive them like old women.

I've seen several Ferraris around Houston. Glimpses, anyway, as they speed by.

Saw one parked up in The Woodlands last week when we were out. Nice car, but I don't want a newer one. I like the older Ferraris myself, like the 308, the one Magnum P.I. and his mustache drove.

So far you all have posted some of my favourites already... the new Vette I'm trying to convince my wife it would be fun to live in instead our house.... the Lotus Esprit Turbo was my favourite as a kid.... never was a fan of Ferraris but the latest one looks cool..... Lambo's are the way to go but like you said they are meant to be driven not be hanger queens....

Would love to get my hands one of these... Mustang Shelby GT500...

I used to be a big car enthusiast.  I'm also pretty humble when it comes to cars because I've accepted the reality that I'll never be able to afford a supercar.  Not in this life anyway.

If this car was available in the US I'd buy it immediately without even taking it for a test drive.

all the Teslas Ive seen up close have fit issues with the body panels and the door handles feel cheap.  the car feels cheap.
these Audi A3s look pretty good on the road and at a decent price point.

I'm too much of a man to want to drive an electric car. At my last job, one of the execs had a higher-end Tesla that he liked to park in a handicap space near the front door. It was a nice looking car but I know security watched it like a hawk so I didn't even think about breathing on it, let alone pawing it. Though I wanted to.

way to many girly Porches, a fair amount of Aston Martins and Lambos.  get buzzed by a GTR doing at least 100 mph on Monday and you NEVER see those around.

A tricked out '60's era Dodge Power-wagon with a cow-catcher plow on the front and a gas-grill and kegerator in the bed would act as a nice chick-magnet counterweight to all those twitchy penis-extenders you got down there. These days an average-sized New England pothole would eat a Lamborghini for lunch and burp up the owners manual afterwards.

lol - not a lot, but it handles bad weather conditions like a dream, and we live in a very hilly area. Plus, we just simply like the model. Its plenty big enough for the 2 of us, since the kids grew up and fled the nest, and its economical and a very fun car to drive.

Jeremy Clarkson said that its one of his favourite cars to drive, so that can't be bad.

Which is pretty much my car, down to the same paint job. Should save thousands of pounds or quid or squid or whatever it is you use for money over there.  8)

Yes, yes...'mid life crisis,' wot?

Actually, Lamborghini has made SUVs before, back in the late 80's.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fairbornecombatengineer.typepad.com%2Fphotos%2Fvehicles%2Flm002bcamouflage467ace.jpg&hash=66e0f0570f92d785cf183db0fb97a52f113a1a12)

I do have to say I like my SUVs to be boxy and manly. This new trend toward making them look like pimped-out Accord coupes with double lift kits doesn't do it for me.

Even in older cars who's cabins didn't collapse the sudden deceleration trauma is profound. Whom ever thought up the idea of crumple zones and their ability to soak up kinetic force deserves a godsdamn nobel prize.

DeLorean Will Restart Production In 2017 (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/delorean-will-restart-production-in-2017-ar172345.html)

QuoteBack in 2008, a small company known as DeLorean Motor Company began refurbishing DeLorean' s

>:(

Quoteafter it finally acquired all of the remaining parts and tooling from was left over from the original DMC. Keep in mind that the DeLorean Motor Company that I'm talking about here has absolutely no ties to the original company. These refurbished DeLoreans have been going for somewhere between $40,000 and $50,000. Everything is about to change for the new DMC, though.

The Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015 will allow small auto manufacturers to produce up to 325 replicas of vehicles that are at least 25 years old, which means the new DMC is about to start producing the DeLorean again. In an interview with Automobile, President of the new DMC, James Espey, said "The Low Volume Manufacturers bill has significantly changed our business model. We're moving from just service and restoration to full low-volume manufacturing and assembly."

DMC claims to have "thousands" of stainless steel panels and parts that will support the DMC manufactured fiberglass chassis. The company will stay true to the original DMC-12 made in 1982, but there will be some modern changes to the car. Production should start sometime in early 2017, assuming the DOT and NHTSA finalize the manufacturing rules on time. When the new DMC-12 rolls of the line in Humble, Texas, pricing is expected to be somewhere below $100,000.

This Humble, Texas location is only about 20 miles from me.  :D

QuoteSo, here's the deal: one of the biggest changes that will come with this remake of the DMC-12 is an engine that is more powerful. The original had a 2.85-liter engine that put out a sad 130 horsepower. I've driven one of the originals, and I'm not sure how Marty McFly ever got the thing to 88 mph in a small parking lot. To put it simply, the car was so heavy that it was a turd. The new DMC is looking to a couple different engine suppliers, one of which hasn't been named. The other is GM, which offers several "E-Rod" crate engine options that are already emissions certified. The small-block Chevys would be a good fit for the new DMC 12.

One of the reasons I think the original DMC-12 flopped is that we weren't ready for it yet. Those doors posed quite a problem if you were in a mall parking lot. And, back in the early 80s, you didn't go to Amazon to get whatever you wanted to impulse buy; you went to the mall. Sometimes I wonder just how many people were left waiting for the jerk who purposely parked too close to their DeLorean.

Aside from a goal of somewhere between 350 and 400 horsepower, the new DMC will equip the DMC-12 with bigger wheels, bigger brakes, and a more modernized interior. I doubt you'll get a flux capacitor, but the cassette tape player will be replaced with at least a CD player, or maybe even a touch screen display. That might be a little much for a car like the DMC-12, but it's also been more than 30 years since the original was leaving people stranded in tight parking spots.

All told, I think this is a pretty awesome idea, and I hope the DOT and NHSTA hurry up with finalizing all those pesky rules. I wouldn't mind seeing a few of these new DeLoreans rolling around. To be honest, I really hope I manage to drive one, especially now that it's faster than a Toyota Prius. The funny part is, I have a feeling the new DMC-12 will end up being way more popular than the original.

Finally made it to yuppie scumdom a few months back and am happily tooling around in a Volvo 240 DL (89 model).  Man, is it a comfy ride compared to what I'm used to.  Girl needs some paint and body work, but otherwise she's straight.

The ultra rare 1966 Mustang pickup, Mustero.  Since it kept the stock Mustang side panels and rear lights, it was pretty stylish.

Ford actually built that? Or is it an aftermarket freak show?
Title: Re: Cars

The Edsel should have been the car america wanted.
A car freak told me that Henry Ford hated the concept of the Mustang.  After the Edsel bombed, he needed a new vehicle in the competitive american market.  When the Mustang was a huge success, he smiled the whole way to the bank.  Ford produced a lot of Mustang variants.
Beverly Hills Ford produced the Mustero on it's own.
