My grandfather had this in his personal effects along with his service medals for serving in WW I. Any ideas on it from my learned colleagues?
My doctor wrote me a prescription for daily sex.

My wife insists that it says dyslexia but what does she know.

Was your Grandfather in the infantry?

Is that a ring?

I found a bangle that looks somewhat similar on this page, about half way down: http://www.derrittmeister.com/patriotj.htm

I'm going to take a guess that it's rough shape is homemade. The troops actually did a lot of artwork on the front with varying results. My guess is that someone who was awarded an Iron Cross managed to fashion the ring and pearl and then attached the small Iron Cross to it.

Somewhere around here I *might* have some images fashioned out of artillery shells that are quite beautiful. I'm sifting through my HDD now to try and see what I have.

OK, not my images but here's a link to the US National WWI Museum's webpage on art made during the war. Perhaps that will help.

You might try contacting them (or the Canadian equivalent) and see what they can tell you.

yes, the Argyll and Sutherland highlanders .... was gassed and had a total of 5 fingers shot off his hands. In otherwords this could be captured booty.

It almost certainly is.

If its trench art, its good. Wonder where the soldier got his enamel paints from

Not everyone was on the front lines. And some of those guys had some time on their hands.

I'm still thinking the iron cross came from something else. I've spent probably half an hour googling and binging around for WWI Iron Crosses and have found a lot of small crosses similar to that one. I'm guessing the item above it is trench art, while the Iron Cross itself came from some kind of momento made somewhere else, like for a bracelet.

I agree with you Breezy, it looks like a trophy or booty of some sort.
