Strangely compelling "Aska." Viking themed first person survival game. Plenty of NPC villagers to do your bidding. You spend much of your game time organizing them.

The game is definitely not a rehash of "Valheim."

Winter is nasty. So much of the game year is getting your village to prepare.

Then there are the undead wave attacks, and the bears...

The game has taken some hits for "being too hard."  I don't see it that way. It just takes strategic planning to make certain you can come through winter without losing any peeps to frostbite. The game also allows you to tone down the difficulty...but so far I have been playing "vanilla" and liking it.

When you say the story/game is mediocre, was not Space Marine 1 also the same?

Even so, I know that the original Space Marine game was very enjoyable because it was WH40K.

Quote from: W8taminute on Yesterday at 06:32:46 PMThere is a very active and successful thread over at Civfanatics entitled "What are you playing now?".  I thought that this could be successful too here.

I'm playing both Space Empires IV and Hex of Steel atm.
Is it one of those threads with 900,000 posts that is 10yrs old? I find those threads become like discord chat, a mess of lost posts that most people don't have time to read or trawl though. I prefer new fresh threads that show from the very first post the active people who like to share with the community. No management needed. No jumping to the end of the thread. But that's just me.

I totally understand your point of view.  I'm sort of a hybrid of what you like and what they do over there with 10 year old threads that go on and on.  Meaning I can enjoy both formats, it's all good.  One way is fresh and short while the other way is a massive catalog of an ongoing chat.

I just finished the campaign and it's worth it for the cutscenes alone and the raw unadulterated 40k content. The game is like an interactive movie. I enjoyed the experience immensely.  The campaign was short but honestly, when it comes to this sort of game, I don't mind that. Because I like to enjoy the story and hit stuff but for it not to have time to become a grindfest.

I agree Jarhead that if it was not 40k content it would be mediocre, as this is a traditional tried and tested formula with nothing really new to think about and no real tactics so to speak. There is some skill to fighting and choosing weapons but I would say much less so than the first space marine game. I'd also say that even though the combat felt meaty it did not feel as meaty and the hits so impactful as the first game did.

I did note that even though the developer is based in the US that the credits seemed to suggest to me that it was likely primarily developed at one of Sabre's subsidiaries in eastern studios?

I now look forward to looking at what coop and multiplayer are like.  I'd also play this on a harder level later. I just played on medium.

Having a love hate relationship with xcom 2 longwar 2 - i have liberated west Asia, India, east Asia and the arctic, Indonesia is in the liberation cycle as is western USA - the golden path missions have me also in New Mexico and east Africa

I've completed 3 golden path missions and I think there's 2 left before it's all over

The team all have plasma weapons and I have 8 teams of 8 guys all at the top level - master sergeant I think, and 6 captains and 2 majors to lead the team

My issue comes with the golden path missions - the normal missions are a dream - I can take on 20 bad guys with no problem and watching my guys use their skills in over watch and thru the turn is great but the golden path ones are so ridiculously stacked against you it's almost like the devs couldn't think of anyway to make it hard other than to put 40-50 baddies on the map - I'm in no fear of having that uh oh I didn't research the right things moment and been overwhelmed but it's a bit silly

Having read up on the missions it's clear there is a way of min-maxing your soldiers to be absolute death machines and it's all over without taking any fire but I didn't do that

Still - loving the campaign and near the end I'm having what to do next time thoughts so I will play it thru again

I heard strong rumours of Russia being involved in the Brexit referendum. They are just rumours that I've done nothing to check out because - well, it's done. But it's not beyond a stretch to believe Russia would be funding something like that - a UK outside of Europe would be a nice thing for them.

They're probably funding the gangs trafficking people from Africa through to Europe to sow division.

**** 'em. I hate the ****.
