I've been doing some reading on the Taiping Rebellion and the Chinese Civil War (19th Century) and enjoying it a lot. Are there any games at all that you know of covering this era? I realize it's a tall order. I found one reference to a Chinese made strategic game over at Wikipedia but nothing else. Thanks!

Age of Rifles is ancient, but offered a few battles in China. Not the centerpiece, but better than nothing.
That's the only thing that comes to mind ATM.
^Thanks LB. I have asked this question periodically over the course of 15+ years and nothing new is ever on the horizon. Japanese settings always take the front seat.

Games where you fight for the British to be able to sell opium to the Chinese may have a little something to do with a lack of interest.
^Funny I was going to mod Napoleon Total War a teeny bit so I could do just that. It interests me!

It could be fun, but I have to say that the Chinese usually aren't much of a challenge. In the Boxer Rebellion many of them were kung fu practitioners (hence the "boxer" part of the rebellion) whose primary weapons were their fists or knives and whose protection from British guns were the deepest secrets of Chinese black magic.
The old adage that you shouldn't bring a kung fu artists to a gunfight would apply here.
^You should read up on the Taiping Rebellion...probably the bloodiest war in 19th century history. Meaning, worse than the Napoleonic Wars. All of them. Combined.
A new book was just released on it and reviewed over at the NYTimes...'Autumn of something or other'...I forget the title. I just bought an older one on the history of China from the 1830s to 1910. Fascinating stuff.
It should be gamed!!!
Hmmm. I had hoped and expected more of Chinese history. Looks like you've found it.
The simplest way to get a game created about this era is to create a boardgame. You seem to have found some good historical sources. Brant is good with game design. You might want to chat with him and see what develops.
It would be quite the sexy beast, this game.
Hell I'll take a game on European imperialism in South East Asia in the 19th Century...doesn't have to be exclusively focused on China!
Represent the French, the British, the US, the Japanese, the Chinese, the Vietnamese. Throw in some expeditionary forces, some ironclads, and the Black Flag Army.
Epicosity!!!
That does sound cool.
I know! :/

Hmm. No love for the Dutch again I see. After all, you know it wasn't called the
Swedish East Indies .
My bad. But everyone knows Dutch power was at best waning in Asia in the later 19th century. How about they are represented by a heavily armed dinghy in the game?
<snicker>
Fight! Fight! Fight!
If we were talking 16th century Japan, then sure. Honest question: did the Dutch send a unit of troops to help put down the Boxer Rebellion?
Oh, sure. *Now* you want to be nice.
I love Dutch history, especially early New York history. Late 19th Century Dutch history? Meh. It's like reading a history of me. A lightweight who keeps getting pushed around by the bigger boys. I live that...why game it too?

Totall 1600 years before what you've asked for, but have you tried Romance of the Three Kingdoms? I used to have it on my PSOne and I picked up a version for my PS2, but I'm not sure if there is a PC version. And yes, I realize you asked for 19th, not 3rd, but, it's the only thing I know of that encompasses all of China geographically.
^I have always wanted to play a KOEI game. Getting a little desperate...gonna check to see if there's a site for them.

A quick google-chop tells me there were no troops from the Netherlands as it was not part of the 8 nation Alliance. It was, however,
one of the signatories to the Boxer Protocol which ended major hostilities.
^I'm sorry...no soup for you.
Civ IV looks to be the way to go for this. There are 3 or 4 big scenario mods that cover the 19th century and include the Chinese.
^Buddy, I've been trying to get you to play Civ IV with me for over two years. If this is what does it for you, I'm in. And I'm pretty sure we could grab W8 and maybe Bismarck, too.
We did play for a few short months...Fall of Heaven II! Trying to download one of the mods I saw now at CivFanatics but "the server is too busy."
How about this?

As always for me, found via RPS - here is the article (quite interesting I thought) that picked it out:

High Tea - I wasn't sure if it was a joke, a parody, or someone blithely ignoring history. Or trying to make a point with it.
I wonder if I can spim up a Chinse scenario with Vicky 2.

I believe from the other link it was meant to be broadly educational - so making a point.
You feel it was misleading?

No, I just wasn't sure what I was looking at - purely from landing on the dev's page. They don't really give you context, they just toss you into the game.
OMG...High Tea is more of what I wanted than I even imagined...but I would like little more combat :)
