Title: "The Death Ride of Jean Lannes" -- An 1809 Kriegsspiel
Post by: Cyrano on July 04, 2018, 02:13:22 PM
It is with no small measure of delight that I announce the beginning of the second Grogheads Kriegsspiel using "The Flight of the Eagle" rules for moderation.  After a fair amount of conversation, including a small amount with the game's creator, I have chosen the Austria 1809 campaign as included in the first volume.  Note this is the "opening moves" scenario and set a good deal West of what would eventually become the Aspern-Essling/Wagram campaigns.

For those unfamiliar with what this entails, you need look no further than the special child forum here in the "play by forum" section and read the fairly massive pile of stuff associated with the very successful "Six Days in October" event that wrapped a few months ago.

The commands are:

AUSTRIA

Erzherzog Carl Ludwig Johann Joseph Laurentius von Österreich, Herzog von Teschen -- Commander -- Jason Pratt

I Corps -- Bellegarde -- Pinetree
II Corps -- Kollowrath -- Banzai_Cat
III Corps -- Hohenzollern -- Barthheart (Just can't quit the German-inflected...)
IV Corps -- (Orsini) Rosenberg -- James Sterrett
V Corps -- Louis -- Neal
VI Corps -- Hiller -- Dom
Reserve -- Kienmayer -- Lancer4321
Reserve -- Lischenstein -- Jack Gill

IMPERIAL FRANCE

Emperor Napoleon I -- Commander -- Hatricus

II Corps -- Oudinot/Lannes -- Duke_of_Earl
III Corps -- Davout -- Marsbarr
IV Corps -- Massena -- Treb
VII Corps -- Lefebvre -- Jimlacey1
VIII Corps -- Vandamme -- Advocator

For those who are in, the e-mail will again be "jenacampaignATgmailDOTcom".

VIVE L'EMPEREUR!

Jim

Once you're ready to kick off the game, we will put everything in its own sub-forum together. For now we will leave this out and sticky so everyone can see it to sign up

As the prior Napoleon, I believe it is only right that I should allow someone else who wants the easiest job to take a crack at it.

For that matter, I am willing to concede my invitation for newcomers on any position at all.

I will however be glad to play, whether as reserve in case of dropout, or to fill in a lot, or even as Nappy the Newspaper guy again. I have to admit it would be thematically appropriate for the same French team that worked so well together to step up in challenge for the next game.

In short, I am available to serve in whatever capacity. (But there is a possibility, not a certainty, that my plans for a Republic of Rome forum game will take precedence in one or more ways.)

I would like to play if there is a spot. I've read the rules to the Flights of the Eagles system, but haven't had an opportunity to play.

@bbmike:  I must confess to being both delighted and horrified, although it's a very nice problem to have.

Doug and I always expected there were Kriegsspielers wanting to march in their dozens.  Nice to be proven correct.

A bit... LOL

Hello! My name is Marshall or "Neal" on here.

I am an experienced Kriegsspiel guy looking to play some PBEM Kriegsspiel.

I run Kriegsspiel events in Los Angeles, and wrote an article about it in the current issue of Battles magazine. That should qualify me as insane.

I heard there was going to be a Napoleonic Kriegsspiel starting soon, so I have wandered into this establishment seeking a fix. You guys got anymore of them PBEM Kriegsspiels?

-Neal

OJ saw his post first and pointed him in the right direction.

Since naturally I want to win, I nominate him to take my place as Napoleon!

(Or failing that, I nominate him to take Charles' slot against me, so if I lose... ahem, I mean if we lose... then I can blame my loss on someone with more experience.  >:D )

Divisional commanders...why I oughta...

Thanks so much to everyone for their replies.

One last round of off-line conversations and I'll be ready to randomize commands.  Once that happens, I'll get out the in-brief kits within a day or so.  I will then announce, in everybody's favorite game time thread, the start of the preparation period which I expect to last one week.  This is for the two sides to discuss strategy, each amongst themselves.  And then I call for orders and we're off.

To say that Jim and I are delighted to see the response to this is an understatement. It's nice to see that there are more crazy people in this world...

After some discussion, we've decided that with so many potential players, it would be a shame to not allow as many people to play as possible. As such, we're going to run a second instance of this campaign, with me as umpire. This will allow all of the "reserves" to play right away, as allow some who have already signed up but are gluttons for punishment to play on the other side. Finally, and not the least reason for doing this, Jim/Cyrano/JK will get a chance to play too!

So, stay tuned. As I get a chance to get my arms around this tonight after work we'll start getting the second instance organized.

Good thing I bought a new dice tower at Origins...

It took a while to concoct this elaborate scheme...OK, not that elaborate...but I'm glad Doug has taken it into the light of day.

I've caught up the reserves as I know them and we are very nearly full with game TWO.

My present goal is to have commands, &c., for Game ONE resolved this evening.

Thereafter, I'll shortly get packets out to players.

For those in Game ONE, please, if you were not in the Jena KS, send me a "hey, it's me" e-mail to jenacampaignATgmailDOTcom and tell me your forum moniker.

Best,

Jim

If you were on the reserve list (and therefore now in the second game) hold tight a little bit until I get set up. If you're part of the first game please send an email to jenacampaign@gmail.com so Cyrano has your email for his game.

bearodactyl
Billcoop4
Brojd
crak
craniumgroup
Davidkvh
ForzaMark
Iconoclast
IncompetentIdiot
Lowenstaat
OJsDad
Tomg

which is 12 players, if everyone wants to play. Dr Sterrett has informed me that he is available for game two if we have room, which at this point, we do. That puts us at Lucky 13. I'm assuming Cyrano wants in as a player, meaning we have one slot still available.

Of the above, I've heard from Billcoop4 at 1809campaign (at) gmail.com and James Sterrett so far. If you are in the second instance of the campaign, please email me at the above with your name, forum name, and if you have a preference for which commander you would like to play.

In the meantime I'll be getting briefing packets together and figuring out where I'm going to hang the campaign map where Davidkvh won't see it when he comes over Thursdays to game...

You're in Jim. And, assuming the remainder of the Reserves acknowledge that they are indeed in (most already have) that takes us to 15 for the second game. Jim and I pulled together most of the briefing information tonight, and I just picked up my map poster. Things are in progress!

Second Gamers! I have everything more or less ready to go, except assignment of billets. The issue is that I still havent heard from:
I'm going to try and email them through the forum, but if they haven't replied by tomorrow evening those are open spots. I know of at least one other person that wants to play. If any of you know any of these three fine players, please ask them to jump into this thread, get caught up on the posts, and email me their information.

Tomorrow evening I'll ask here in this thread if anyone from the first game also wants to play in the second game to fill any open spots, and then I'll be assigning billets.

I may also just draft Bawb. Because he wants to play, he just doesn't know it.

Be aware that if you use the forum to email members, the email will arrive looking like it's from Brant.

I had this happen recently when a member emailed me asking for where to download some Magic: the Gathering tools. He (or she?) didn't sign his name, and it came in looking like it was from Brant, so neither of us had any idea whom I should reply to.  :-\

(I felt really sorry about that because someone must think I was just ignoring them. I tried to post the situation on a couple of relevant threads, but no one followed up...  :'( )

Be aware that if you use the forum to email members, the email will arrive looking like it's from Brant.

I'm trying to rewire that tonight.

Mainly so I don't have to keep emailing people and tell them their replies went nowhere

Actually, it is Mrs. Bawb that everyone should fear.
One does not mess with the Mrs. Bawb!

Thanks for the offer, and I may very well take you up on it!

I think we may still be missing Neal's email in the group? (Lloyd is Pinetree, right?)

Regret to report that Erzherzog Carl Ludwig Johann Joseph Laurentius von Österreich, Herzog von Teschen sent a message so long that paper stock throughout Österreich has now been eradicated.

Further communication must be conducted via smoke signals.

Regards,

Feldmarschall Johann Karl, Graf von Kolowrat-Krakowsky

Dear sir,

Do NOT ever write your orders in Haiku. If you do, I will take my II Corps to Fiji and live among the island native women.

Yours etc.,

I have to say that,
as a threat, those details seem
oddly con-ven-ient.

(Had to make sure that
the syllable variant
came out right at the... ...... end, drat.)

*I knew B_C would fit in...I just knew it...*

IN-BRIEFS ARE SENT!

Holy cow, we're going to do this again.

As with any game, it's not until you lay it down, spread out the pieces, and start to see the story it's telling that you have those "oh, my, goodness" moments.

Had one last night as I was close-reading the briefings for both sides and studying the poster-sized map I now have on my wall.

>:D

I just don't want to peeve off the normies in this game that have done it before. My knowledge of Napoleonic tactics is limited, as is my knowledge of this very campaign (or any of them in this timeframe, to be honest).

The only thing it looks like my commander knows is his way around a croissant. I mean, look at all the chins. How glorious.

I felt this way at the start of the last one. The only thing you really need to worry about is getting your troops to the right place at the right time. Your division commanders know their stuff and will fight for you. Just support them by not wearing them out with frivolous marching to and fro OR throwing them into battles where they are grossly outnumbered.
Think I managed the first and not so well on the second.  :P

Very much this! Don't worry too much about not knowing. Everyone is operating in an information vacuum. These are learning games.

WE HAVE HAD A SUBSTITUTION!!

In the interest of letting as many folks play as possible, Doug has stepped aside to let Treb on in!

All, please welcome him.

B_C:  What they said.  As I said in the in-brief, in some ways, it's a lot easier to do than describe...

I for one would decline any Frenchie's hearty meal of cassoulet or boudin-noir and insist on McDonald's instead. Also, that les Belges are much smarter than any Frenchie could ever hope to be. :)

Connard, canard, what's the difference, eh? ;)

Lol'd hard at that!  :notworthy:

(For new members who aren't in a position to get the joke, in our first AAR against each other I was playing Stalin against Barbarossa and I named my thread "REALLY OUT TO GET ME" based on Stalin's quip that it's only paranoia if they aren't really out to get you. Also Stalin's paranoia was a factor of the game engine, Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa. Afterward we played a game of Twilight Struggle, me with the Soviets again, so "Really Out To Get Me, Too". For our DC:Blitz campaign, since I played the Nazis I called my side "Now I'm Out To Get Him".)

1am here.  :P

The operational title should be kept secret just in case.  >:D
