The Merchant of Alexandria – A Fatimids AAR

Goal: minor victory by obtaining all the Kingdom Advantages.
Using: Laudan's mod.
Playing as Fatimids. Starting with 8 Provinces (from East to West: Lebanon, Palestine, Sinai, Cairo, Alexandria, El Alamein, Benghazi and Cyrenaica).
(PS: there is no time frame in the game: however Kings get older. In my AAR: young is 20-25, middle-aged 35-40, old 45-50, very old 55-60, venerable 65-death).

Part 1: a new Caliph

1005
When Caliph Aadil came to power in 1005, the Fatimids Empire was already very large. He was ruling the populations from the beautiful gardens of Lebanon to the desert storms of Cyrenaica. Aadil didn't want to expand his control much further, he's goal was to create a prosperous Caliphate where all the various goods of the world could be found. The future seemed bright as he had just married the daughter of the King of Byzantium, which happened to be one of the mightiest Empires of the region, and he was young, 25.
There was one problem that had to be resolved first. The Zirid Caliphate was at war with us. While not very keen to conquest, Aadil was however very much interested in the province of Tripoli as it had some very good soil that allowed the breeding of Horses and the like which were not available in the Fatimids Caliphate. If the Zirids were not ready to sell us these goods, we would have to conquer Tripoli.
Aadil's first decision as new Caliph was to hire a marshal. Emir Aahil was ordered to organize the defences of the province of Cyrenaica which borded the Zirid Caliphate. At the same time, another marshal, Emir Abrar, was updating the military infrastructures of Alexandria: a Fletcher was then under construction.
Caliph Aadil promoted also one of his old friends, Emir Adam, to the rank of Builder and asked him to work with Emir Aahil and transform the city of Cyrenaica into a powerful stronghold.
As he wanted to prevent any attempts of murder and treason, he asked his best friend, Emir Adyar, to protect his back. He would have to track down any enemy spy that would attempt to infiltrate the court of the Fatimids, especially the ones from the Zirids.

1010
Despite being at war, neither the Fatimid Caliphate nor the Zirid Caliphate attempted to conquer the other. At the same time, Aadil had managed to arrange a trade agreement with the Novgorod Kingdom, which was far in the North.
Emir Abrar, second marshal of the Caliphate, was ordered to Palestine as a messenger had announced that mercenaries were willing to be hired. As the military infrastructures of the Caliphate were not yet ready to produce decent troops, Aadil considered that it was a good idea in order to have at least one full army. Meanwhile, as the Fletcher had been finished, Aadil ordered the construction of large stables in Alexandria, so the army could recruit Camel Riders...these would be the bone of the army.
In Cyrenaica, Emir Adam, had managed to finish the construction of a Fletcher and had immediately started with the plans to create a large Sword smith. Emir Aahil was satisfied as he would soon be able to recruit a strong army of well-trained soldiers.
Aadil was however very relieved when a messenger arrived in 1013 from the Zirid Caliphate to announce that they were willing to make peace...they were even willing to sign a trade agreement! As soon as they would have enough horses, they would sell them to us.

1015
In order to achieve his goal to transform the Caliphate into the Centre of Commerce, Aadil knew he would need some large Harbours that would be able to welcome big merchant ships bringing exotic goods from very distant countries. El Alamein would be one of these and so he ordered the construction of a Fishmonger as a start...later he would upgrade it to an Admiralty.
Meanwhile, Emir Ahmed and Emir Abdush went to the court of Byzantium and started to import Hides, thus bringing the goal of our beloved Caliph closer to reality. The diplomatic skills of Aadil were at his best when he managed to sign a trade treaty with the Papacy States.
In 1017, some scientists of the Caliphate discovered rich deposits of silver and salt in the mountains of Lebanon. Aadil ordered the creation of a tool smithy in order to prepare the exploitation of these goods.
Far West, in Cyrenaica, the construction of the military structures was slowly reaching the end when a Spear Maker Factory was put under construction. Soon, any kind of troops, swordsmen, spearmen and archers, would be available in that city. Also in Alexandria, Camel Riders would soon be available as a large Armoury was under construction. The Fatimids Caliphate would fear no-one anymore.

1020
The rich fields in Benghazi made it ideal for agriculture. This is where the Caliph had placed most of his hopes. In that region we would be able to produce many trading goods and so this region was the backbone of his plan. By 1021 a large Apiary had been constructed.
Meanwhile, in El Alamein, the fishmonger was being upgraded to docks...the first ships were starting to arrive.
As the Camel Riders would soon be available, Emir Aahil was ordered back to Alexandria to start the recruitment.
1022 Troubles begin. Not willing to enter a war, Caliph Aadil refused the request of Byzantium to attack the kingdom of Sicily. This would later prove to be a mistake. During this time, Aadil promoted 2 new Emirs: one to the rank of Merchant, Emir Aaquid (4 merchants in the Caliphate: The Caliph, Emir Ahmed, Emir Abdush and Emir Aaquid), and one as a cleric, Emir Ayaan, who was ordered to govern the religious city of Jerusalem.
In 1023, a new trade good was available when the salt mines in Lebanon began their production. The first Kingdom Advantage would soon be achieved.

1025
The first vineyards in the Province of Benghazi started to produce an exquisite wine. Despite being at peace with the Zirid Caliphate, tensions were still present. Aadil ordered Emir Abrar to move from Lebanon to Cyrenaica with his army in order to protect the West. That army was mainly a Mercenaries army: there were only 2 Desert Spearmen companies from the Caliphate...there was a company of Slavonic Bowmen, 2 of regular Spearmen, 3 companies of Axe-men and one of Pronaias (medium Cavalry).  The East part of the Caliphate was quiet for the moment as the Byzantium Kingdom was a good friend and the Abyssids were peaceful.
In 1027, the building of a Hemp field in Benghazi allowed the production of another trade good. Furthermore, the Khazars who, like the Zirids, were also selling horses proposes us a Trade agreement. Now we would always be able to have cavalry units.
Emir Aadil and his wife had given up hope that a child would bring life and laughter in the palace. The Empress was already 40 years old and 22 years of marriage had not brought the heir they had longed for. It was like a miracle when in early 1028, the empress announced to the Caliph that she was pregnant. When the boy came to life, the entire Caliphate was in joy...finally an heir was there!
It was during these joyful years that Emir Adam finished the building of the Wax factory in Benghazi, that the first silver was dug out of the mountains in Lebanon and that the first horses arrived from the Zirid Caliphate. As it seemed, things were moving smoothly but that would end soon.

1030
After so many years of friendship, Caliph Aadil accepted an alliance offer of the Byzantium Kingdom...but he should have looked closer to the diplomatic relations of his friend. Indeed, the Byzantium Kingdom was already at war with too many Kingdoms.
In Benghazi, another building was finished: a Weaving Mill that would produce Linen. Emir Adam had done some fine work in that province and many trade goods were already available.
In Alexandria, work began on the production system of Marble (Tool Smithy and Quarry).

1031
Caliph Aadil was walking quietly along the long alleys of the gardens when a messenger came running to him.
"Sire, the Byzantium Kingdom is suffering heavy loses against the Kingdom of Sicily...they have lost already 3 provinces!"
"What?" replied the Caliph, "this time we're not just friends anymore, we're allies...take a new horse and ride to the city of Cyrenaica but first come with me."
He went into the palace and wrote a note that he handed to the messenger.
"There, you will give this letter to Emir Abrar; meanwhile I will send another messenger to Sicily in order to bring a declaration of war".
It took him 4 days and 4 nights, the messenger barely stopped to eat and change horses, to get to Cyrenaica. He ran into the stronghold and handed the letter to Emir Abrar. The later read it carefully and his face became darker, he then called for his aids.
"Sire, you wish to talk to us?"

"Yes, we're a war with Sicily; inform the captains of the companies...we will embark tomorrow for the Sicilian province of Apulia. The city of Bari isn't well defended, so this is where our Caliph wants us to strike first. Now go and tell them!"
One week later, very early in the morning, Emir Abrar was deploying his army about 2 miles from the city of Bari when one of his scouts arrived.
"What's the situation?" asked Emir Abrar?
"The city is almost defenceless, sire, there are only one company of town guards and one of peasants".
"That's all? Well, seems like an easy start of our campaign..."
And so it was...the two defending companies were easily beaten and the city surrendered. Emir Abrar's army would stay there for a while in order to be sure that the city was under control. At once, Abrar sent a messenger to Alexandria to announce the good news.

1032
The news of this first defeat of Sicily didn't seem to please a lot of countries. The Zirid Caliphate decided to break the trade agreement and stopped sending horses. Fortunately, our trade agreement with the Khazars allowed us to keep this trade good. The Zeta Kingdom declared war during the same year...more would follow. Caliph Aadil looked again at the note on the diplomatic relations of the Byzantium Kingdom..."how did he manage to get so many enemies? How could I have been so stupid to let my Caliphate enter these conflicts?"
However, there was also some very good news. The new revenue from the silver mines in Lebanon was greatly helping the war effort.

1035

Some more bad news...Italy declares war on us...

Late in the night, Caliph Aadil was still working in his office and studying the map of the Mediterranean. Things were starting to get serious...from one enemy at the start, Sicily, the number had risen to 3 (Sicily, Zeta and Italy). The Caliphate wasn't prepared for such a war and it had only two armies as Aadil had mainly worked to create a trade Empire. Just before midnight, a messenger from the Zirid Caliphate arrived at the door of the palace.
"A messenger from the Zirid? It's been months since we last had one, let him come in."
The man entered and handed a letter to the Caliph...he whispered: "I am sorry, Sire"
The Caliph read the paper and remained silent. He turned to the messenger.
"It's not your fault if the Zirid Caliphate declares war on us...go in the kitchen and take something to eat. You're under my protection tonight so you can rest quietly before going home tomorrow".
"Thank you, Sire" and the messenger went away.

Next morning, Emir Aahil entered the Throne room.
"Sire, you asked for me?"
"Yes my friend...how is it going with the Camel Riders?"
"Very good Sire, I've already been able to recruit 3 full companies of Camel Riders...they are well trained and highly motivated."
"Fine, now take them and ride as fast as you can to Cyrenaica...the Zirid Caliphate has declared war"
"But Sire? I only have 3 companies?"
"I know, but Emir Abrar has done some good work and you'll be able to complete your army. Your first goal will be to defend our East boarder...and if the occasion is there, take Tripoli and keep it...we will need this prosperous region".
"Yes Sire"...

And the Camel Riders of Emir Aahil rode fast into the desert...

1036
Extract from the notes of Ibrahim, scribe of the Caliph:

March 7
Brittany has offered us a trade treaty. All in all we've got at least as many friends as enemies. The Caliphate has been at joy again after the miraculous birth of a new prince.
Meanwhile, in Apulia, General Abrar has started to build training grounds in order to be able to recruit directly in Italy the troops he will need to defeat the Zeta kingdom, Italy and Sicily.

June 14
Emir Abrar is invading Napoli with his rested troops. The city of the Zeta Kingdom should fall without too much problems.

July 2
Very bad news...Sicily has managed to bring an army into Lebanon and General Aahil is in Cyrenaica!
The Caliph has organized the defences of Beirut and called back General Aahil who has now a full army. Beirut has full stocks of food and a complete garrison...it will be able to resist a long siege until Emir Aahil gets there in about 2 months.

July 10
The City of Napoli has fallen. Emir Abrar has proven once more how great a tactician he is...

July 21
Croatia has declared war! Our Caliph has lost its sleep and works very late in the night. The war isn't going so badly but this is not where he wanted to lead the Caliphate. He wants to lead it into prosperity and while War is not bad for commerce, Peace is much better.

August 5
The Sicilian army is laying siege to Beirut...the situation seems stable. Caliph Aadil has sent a messenger to Sicily...he wants to end this nonsense and asks the Sicilian leader to accept a peace proposal.

September 28
Sicily accepts our proposal...this is fantastic news. One week later, the Sicilian general breaks the siege of Lebanon and makes his way back to Sicilian territory. Will this fragile peace last?

1040
It was in that year that Italy tried to conquer Napoli....but they underestimated Emir Abrar greatly, for he would crush them like bugs.
The enemy marshal set up his camp outside the walls of our city and started a siege. Unfortunately for him, he came alone...
Emir Abrar, with his strong temper, decided that he didn't want to wait until the enemy would give up its positions and ordered the preparation for an attack in order to break the siege. One early morning, Abrar's troops rushed out of the walls and onto the enemies. It took them only half a day to eliminate that puny Italian army and another victory was achieved by Emir Abrar. From now on, no one would dare to question the presence of the Fatimids Caliphate in the southern part of Italy.
The caliph decided to exploit that victory and this new fame to send peace proposals to his European Rivals. And So, The kingdom of Zeta, of Italy and Croatia all accepted as they new it was better than lose more territory. Furthermore, as their Sicilian ally had already signed a peace treaty with us, there was no reason to continue this war.  Other good news was the trade treaty made with Wessex
Now, the only real enemy left was the Zirid Caliphate...and they didn't have as much allies as Sicily had. If we can take Tripoli, we will be able to get closer to our goal and the first Kingdom advantage will be achieved.

1043 Part I
The Zirid Caliphate attacks! Emir Shallal enters the province of Cyrenaica and heads directly to the fortress. One week later, a second army, lead by Emir Dimar, enters the territory of the Caliphate more in the south and sets up a camp.
Emir Shallal lays siege to the fortress. However, Emir Aahil doesn't want to wait for the second army and decides to break the siege. Emir Shallal didn't expect this but manages to retreat without losing too many men. At the same time, Emir Aahil who had started a pursuit of the enemy's army, hearing from a scout that Emir Dimar's army was marching against the now defenceless city of Cyrenaica, decides to go back to the stronghold in order to prepare its defences.
Seeing that they were now out of danger, Emir Shallal reorganized his army and then joined Emir Dimar at the gates of the city of Cyrenaica....
How will this end?

1043 Part II

Early morning in the castle of Cyrenaica...Emir Aahil is taking his breakfast:

- Sire!!!
- What?
- We have spotted enemy movements!
- Where?
- Emir Dimar is taking positions in the north...
- Anything else?
- Yes, Sire. Emir Shallal has placed his troops in the south!
- I don't like that, not one bit. I really feel like a slice of cheese between two pieces of bread!
- Sire?
- Hum whatever....order our troops to be ready. We aren't in a good position so we will try to surprise them by launching an attack against Emir Dimar's positions first as he seems to have weaker troops....after? We will see.

1043 Part III

8h00
- CAMEL RIDERS....READY TO ATTACK!!!!
- YEAAAAAAAHHHH!
- TAKE POSITION OUTSIDE THE WALL....NOW!!!

The Camel riders followed closely by the rest of the army deployed in front of the castle, ready to attack Emir Dimar....

However, at the same time, the enemy got nearer and when the camel riders arrived at the deployment spot, a company of peasants was already there!

- CAMEL RIDERS....ATTACK AND DEFEND THE POSITION!!!

8h30

- Sire, the camel riders have effectively defended the position but have had heavy losses!
- Tell them to go back into the castle....is the desert spearmen company I ordered to attack the enemy from the rear in position?
- Yes Sire...they are going to engage the peasants anytime.
- Ok...let's make them pay for my unfinished breakfast....Knights....ATTACK!!!!

1043 Part IV

9h00

The sand was turning to red on the battlefield.

- Captain, what's the situation? Asked Emir Aahil.
- It seems we are taking advantage over the forces of Emir Dimar...still, we need more time.

Suddenly a scout arrived on a horse...

- Sire, Emir Dimar will be here shortly!
- Already? Whispered Aahil.
- Apparently a scout told them about our attack very early...they are getting closer.
- We cannot fight both armies at the same time...sound for the retreat into the castle!
- Yes Sire!

The army withdraws from combat into the safety of the castle...just in time before Emir Dimar can attack.

9h30
- We almost had them...this is really annoying. Let the soldiers rest for a while and give water to the horses.
- It's been taken care off, Sire.
- Our strategy didn't work....we have to think about something else...but first I'll finish my breakfast, can't think clearly if I am hungry...and I am much more hungry than I was this morning.

1043 Part V

9h00
While Emir Aahil was busy in the north of the city, a small group of enemies started to destroy the South gate.
- Sire...the enemy is trying to destroy our South gate.
- WHAT? Can't we rest a bit?
- It's a small group but it could become dangerous...
- Move the army to the south of the city...we shall destroy them!!!
- Yes Sire!

And so the entire army moved to the south gates...

1043 Part VI

11h00

- Sire, the troops are in position!
- Order the breakthrough...they shall not enter...Attack!!!!

The heavy doors opened quickly and the troops rushed out...the enemy wasn't expecting this. During half and hour, the troops of the Emir fought themselves a way out.

11h30

- We have broken the enemy lines Sire!
- Send the Saracens to crush those pesky archers...
- Yes Sire.

The Saracens were causing heavy losses to the enemy's archer companies. Despite heavy losses, victory seemed to be close.

12h00

The sun was pounding heavily on the troops...

- Our troops are fighting the last archer companies under the palm trees...
- Great....victory will be ours!

12h30

- Sire the archers have been defeated!
- Fantastic!
- Wait!
- What?
- Emir Shallal is charging our men with his knights!
- Order them to come back into the castle!!!!
- Sire...it's too late.

1043 Part VII

13h00

- Sire, Emir Shallal and his knights have defeated our exhausted troops....he's entering the town!
- Camel Riders, Knights! For the Caliphate of the Fatimids...ATTACK!!!!

The Emir turned to the captain of the archers

- Captain...order the archers to fire on the knights!!!
- Hem, Sire, the archers have run out of arrows...
- WHAT?
- Well yes Sire, they only have a limited amount of arrows and now they just don't have any anymore...
- Order them to attack with their swords then...
- Yes Sire....Bowmen....with your swords...ATTACK

13h30

- We've won Sire...Emir Shallal is no more.
- Yes but at what price...we don't have camel riders, the bowmen don't have any arrows and I've got only one knight left.

Will Emir Aahil be able to defeat Emir Dimar?

1043 Part VIII

14h00

- Sire...Emir Dimar is breaking through the East gate!!!
- Did the archers have time to find some arrows?
- No, Sire...
- Bowmen...for a last stand to defend the city!!! CRUSH THEM!!!
- YEAAAAAAHHH

14h30

Sand is in the air....wind is getting stronger. Emir Aahil and his bodyguard, Vizier Ahmed, stand in the main street. In front of them Emir Dimar turns his head into his direction after having killed the last brave bowmen of the Fatimids Caliphate.

Emir Dimar rides to Emir Aahil:
- You fought bravely for Cyrenaica....but lost.
- Yes, the dices haven't been favourable to me today....what will you do with us?
- You're an honourable man...you can go back to the Caliph and tell him that the Zirid are the new power in the region...and intend to remain it.
- The Caliph won't accept this defeat...he will send another army.
- Well...we'll see then, won't we?

And so ended the siege of Cyrenaica... a very bloody battle with almost no survivors...

Emir Aahil and Vizier Ahmed disappeared into the desert and headed to Alexandria in order to bring the bad news...

Part 2: the revenge of the Fatimids

1043...still

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, the Caliph was having intense diplomatic meetings. The French were very interested in the various goods of the Caliphate and thus offered us a good trade agreement...this would surely prove to be useful in the future.
The Abyssids also had a plead...a very different one. They were in trouble with the Kingdom of Kiev. However, the Caliph wasn't willing to enter another war, so he refused. The Abyssids had expected this and had kept a very interesting offer on the side.

- Sire, said the Abbasid ambassador, we ask you to reconsider your position.
- It's all considered, we've had enough wars and we are still fighting the Zirid caliphate.
- We know, Sire, but we need so much your help that we are ready to make you a great offer.
- What is it? Gold, diamonds? I already have all this...
- No Sire...we offer you the province of Jordan...
- The...., the caliph remained silent for a while. This was indeed a huge offer.
- I'll give you my answer tomorrow.

In fact, the caliph had already decided that he would help the Abbasid...the province of Jordan was rich and he could well use it in his was against the Zirid too.

One week later, Emir Aahil and Vizier Ahmed arrived in Alexandria...

- What are you doing here old friend, asked the Caliph? How's the situation in Cyrenaica?

Emir Aahil blushed and whispered.

- I've lost the city, Milord.
- You what?
- Two armies have attacked the city, Sire. I did my best but it wasn't enough.
- Very annoying...we have to protect Benghazi at all costs...but tonight you'll rest and tomorrow we'll recruit a new army...afterwards you'll join Emir Abrar and take back the city.
- Sire...I am really too old for this....I don't have the strength anymore. I ask you to accept my resignation.
- I understand...stay here and we'll play chess again like in the old times...
- It will be a pleasure Milord.
- Ahmed?
- Yes, Sire?
- Send a messenger to Italy...he has to inform Emir Abrar about the situation and ask him to protect Benghazi and wait until we send another army before attacking Cyrenaica.
- Yes Sire.

One week later, Emir Abrar was on board of his ship...hailing back to Africa.

Early 1044

Emir Abrar set up the organization of the defences of the Benghazi. Fortunately, many mercenaries were camping in Benghazi...that allowed Abrar to fill up the garrison of the city as well as his own army. He redeployed the Slavonic axmen and the Slavonic archers in the city defences...this allowed him to hire more companies of mercenaries.

Caliph Aadil was also very busy despite his old age. He had selected a new Marshal, Emir Anwaar, and had started the construction of the Granary.

Emir Anwaar entered the throne room.

- Sire, you called for me?
- Yes....have you been able to recruit a company of camel riders?
- Yes sire, very brave men....I intend to find more of them before joining Emir Abrar and defeat the Zirid Caliphate.
- I am afraid, the Zirid Caliphate will have to wait. I have managed to calm the population of our new province Jordan, but in Lebanon, a usurpator is claiming the province for himself...and he's got a very strong army...more than 500 men.
- 500 men? That's impressive...
- Exactly and now he's killing and burning everything on his way...I need you to stop him.
- But Sire, I only have this company of Camel Riders...I'll need more time before I can have an entire army.
- I know, however a scout has informed us that there is a big camp of mercenaries in Jordan....so take gold and buy yourself an army.
- Yes Milord.

And so Emir Anwaar left the city of Alexandria in order to defeat the dangerous rebels. The Caliph sends a messenger to Emir Abrar in order to inform him about the delay. He arrived one week later in Benghazi.

- Sire...a messenger!

Emir Abrar stood up and walked towards the newcomer...

- When do the reinforcements arrive? Asked he impatiently.
- Well...no Sire, there are some revolts in Lebanon and the Caliph has sent the new Marshal there in order to bring peace to the region...you'll have to wait some more time.
- What? But it's now that we should attack...my men are ready!
- I am sorry Sire.
- Don't be....go back to Alexandria and tell the Caliph that I will do this on my own!
- But...Sire?
- Go now.
- Yes Sire...

And so the messenger went away. Emir Abrar, at the head of his army, left the city of Benghazi in order to attack Cyrenaica...

Mai 1044

The night just began when Emir Abrar entered the province of Cyrenaica. A scout came back to the army and went directly to the Marshal.

- Sire....there's an army coming towards us!
- How did they know we were coming, asked one of the captains?
- They didn't, replied Abrar. They are on their way to Benghazi....it's an invasion army. Did you see who is leading the army, is it Emir Dimar?
- No Sire, said the scout. The army is led by Emir Azeem, a low-ranked marshal with no stars yet.
- Well...let's crush them!

And so a fierce battle started...but Emir Abrar was an old fox and new that part of the desert very well...Emir Azeem had no chance. Victory was quickly achieved but the army had suffered some substantial losses. Midnight had just passed.

- Sire, we have to go home to rest the man and refill the companies.
- No.
- But Sire, we cannot go further, the men are tired and need a rest after that battle.
- Can't you see? They were going to attack us in Benghazi....their army is defeated and they probably have only limited defences in Cyrenaica....if we wait, they'll get a chance to reinforce the city and send another army.
- What if Emir Dimar is in the city?
- We'll take the risk.

It was 2 in the morning when the army arrived in front of the city. The men were tired but they trusted Emir Abrar...he had led them to victory each time.

- Scout! Check the defences!
- Yes, Sire.

The city had only the garrisons to protect it....and most men were sleeping. Cyrenaica was regained in one night. Emir Abrar became very famous after that victory and gained another star for this fantastic achievement...Emir Abrar had a new nickname: "The desert fox".

1045
Shayb, the prince, was finally ready to take some responsibility in the Caliphate. For the moment, he was helping his father to do the daily business and made his first diplomatic experiences.
The Ambassador of Sweden came and Shayb skilfully arranged a trade treaty with the kingdom of the north.

1046
The Caliph was tired. The war with the Zirid Caliphate wasn't finished despite a glorious victory of Emir Abrar during the reconquest of Cyrenaica (which he didn't even had allowed). Furthermore Emir Anwaar hadn't been able to recruit an army strong enough in order to eliminate the rebels in Lebanon. In June he got really sick and that's when he called his son to him.

- Son.
- Yes Father! Whispered Shuayb.
- My days are coming to an end.
- Don't say that...you'll soon feel better!
- No, I won't...a man knows when his time has come...and this is now.
- But...
- Let me speak, Son. You will become the new Caliph...you know that I wanted to create a prosperous Caliphate...under my rule, the Caliphate has increased of 3 Provinces but we still don't have control over Tripoli which would give us access to various trade goods we still need...Will you continue my work?
- Yes Father, I will.

This seemed to calm Aadil. He spent the last days watching the gardens of Alexandria...and then he passed away.

In the following days, you could hear those words in the whole Caliphate.

"The great Caliph is gone, long live the new Caliph!"

Part 3: A new Caliph

1047

The first decision of the new Caliph was to use the trade agreement the Fatimids had with France. He arranged a trade route that brought Dyes in the Caliphate...a new trade good was now available. He really believed that he would achieve his father's vision during his life-time.

He knew however that it was important to have children...therefore he needed a wife. After studying the map of the known world, he decided to contact the mighty King of Hungary, Geza I....an alliance with Hungary would help the Fatimids control their northern enemy, the Kingdom of Kiev.

The Calif spent two weeks in the castle of the Kingdom of Hungary where he had long walks with Tesla, one of the daughters of the King.
- Sire, I am here to ask for the hand of your beautiful daughter, Tesla.
- My dear Calif, we are honoured that the ruler of the mighty Fatimids wants to have a strong bond with the Hungarians. Before accepting this, we have a request.
- What kind of request? Asked Shuayb carefully.
- You know we don't have a good relation with the Papacy...we therefore ask you to break relations with them.

Shuayb remains silent for a while. He then turns to Geza I

- We don't really need this relation with the Papacy. I will recall our ambassador at once. This alliance is really too important and furthermore, I am really in love with Tesla and I believe she has fallen in love too.
- Ah ah...yes...she's really lovely indeed.

And the two men shook their hands...the Fatimids had a new Empress.

1048

Anwaar, with the little money he had, recruited some swordsmen in a mercenary camp in Jordan. He then headed to Lebanon but saw that he hadn't enough troops to fight the rebels. He decided to go back to Jerusalem in order to recruit more troops. He could have gone to Alexandria but it was way too far away... In order to be able to recruit he had to build training grounds in Jerusalem and then a fletcher.
Meanwhile, Emir Abrar had consolidated his position in Cyrenaica and had replenished his troops. The defenses were now strong. His next step would be to build a siege workshop in order to have access to siege machines for the invasion of Tripoli.
We also learned that the Pope called for a Crusade against Cordoba which is still very powerfull in Spain.

1049

The year started well with a non-aggression pact with Hungary. How could it have been different when our Calif is married to one of their princess?

In Cyrenaica, Emir Abrar was now ready to launch an attack against Tripoli and so he went on his way.

As he was going to lay a siege to Tripoli, a scout arrived.

- How's the situation, asked Abrar.
- There are no armies in the city.
- Perfect!
- However, I have spotted the army of Emir Dimar a couple of days away...
- Emir Dimar!!! Let's try to take the city before he gets there.

Unfortunately, Emir Dimar arrived in time to support the defences of the city. Abrar had no chance to defeat Emir Dimar's army as well as the city garrisons. He therefore decided to retreat...but this was a feint. He wanted to lure Emir Dimar into the open and defeat him on place selected by him

How will this battle end?

The Battle of Tripoli

Emir Abrar advanced.

- Desert Spearmen....MOVE TO THE CENTER!!!

With quick orders, Emir Abrar oriented his army in order to face the enemy.

- Spearmen...FORM A LINE!

The enemy army was getting closer and the men were nervous...they knew that Dimar was a brilliant strategist.

The first two companies of Spearmen were ordered to attack the peasants that were rushing to them while they got support from the desert archers.

- Sire, a company of Saracens are attacking our forces on the left side!
- Send the Slavonic Axmen to support them.
- Yes, Sire.....SLAVONIC AXEMEN....ATTACK!!!!
- YEAAAAAAH.

- Sire, all our troops are engaged in combat now...
- Inshallah....we have to win this battle.

- Sire! The centre has been overwhelmed by the enemy...
- Tell the archers to prepare for hand to hand combat.
- Sire...Emir Dimar is attacking our left side with his knights...our men are too weak now!

The left side was soon overwhelmed too...fortunately, the men had caused some casualties to the knights of Emir Dimar.

- There's no time to hesitate....KNIGHTS...FOLLOW ME! Shouted Emir Abrar.

And so they charged the Knights of Emir Dimar...

They all fought fiercely when Emir Dimar was heavily wounded and fell of his horse. Everyone stopped to fight. Emir Abrar got off his horse and kneeled. Emir Dimar whispered.

- You have been a great opponent.
- So were you my friend...I wish we would have met elsewhere.
- So do I. We'll meet again in Heaven.

And then he passed away....

- Men of Emir Dimar....go home now.

And so ended the Battle of Tripoli. That was a meeting of giants and would remain in the memories of men for centuries to come.

1050

Despite his victory, Emir Abrar had been forced to go back to Cyrenaica as he had lost more then 1/2 of his army when he had defeated Emir Dimar in Tripoli. He wouldn't be able to launch another attack before 1051 at least.

Calif Shuayb had been pleasently surprised by the arrival of a diplomat of the principality of Kiev who was bringing a peace offer. Shuayb was glad to settle this.

Shuayb took this opportunity to spend money on his fathers project and ordered the building of a winery in Benghazi.

Meanwhile, rumors arrived that the great King of France, Gilles, and the Kniaz of Kiev, Volkmar, had been competing to become the ultimate ruler of Europe. Fortunatly, noone from the council voted for them.

In october of that year, the Empress gave birth to a wonderfull boy...the future seemed bright again.

Calif Shuayb was getting impatient with the rebels in Lebanon...unfortunatly Emir Anwaar was too prudent. He was however very pleased when a messenger anounced him that Anwaar had left Jerusalem to battle the rebels who were camping in Lebanon.

Somehow, the rebel Aahil heard about it, lifted the camp and moved to the north. Anwaar was however very decided and continued the pursuit.

And so the battle started:

- Sire! the enemy is too numerous....
- We'll see....fight for the Caliphate!!!

Despite being higly motivated, Emir Anwaars men were slaughtered. An attempt to send the camel Riders against Emir Aahil ended in a failure as he stayed with his knights well in the middle of the army.

- Sire! we are losing! we have to withdraw.
- Argghh, he will pay for this...blow for the retreat...i have to save what's left to be saved.

And so ended the first attempt to eliminate the rebellion in Lebanon...Emir Anwaar wasn't however ready to give up...he would come back soon...very soon!

Part 4: War with the Zirids

Prelude

1052

Twice, the Fatimids had been defeated in the last two years.

Emir Abrar had been forced to gather his forces in Cyrenaica after a failed attempt to conquer Tripoli and Emir Anwaar had lost against the rebels in Lebanon. Other Kingdoms started to wonder if the Fatimids Caliphate was as strong as they thought. That year became one of preparation.

In Cyrenaica, Emir Abrar trained his troops very hard and reinforced them with Saracens companies of the garrison.

In Jerusalem, Emir Anwaar ordered the construction of a Swordsmith. He needed swordsmen in order to eliminate the rebel Aahil but Alexandria was the closest city with the capacity of equipping such companies and that would mean a long travel, so he had to upgrade the structures of Jerusalem.

The Caliph was slightly depressed....until the first production of wine from Benghazi arrived. He then felt much happier after a couple of cups!

Second attack of Tripoli

1053

Despite having only little reserves of food, Emir Abrar decided to launch a new attempt to take Tripoli. He knew however that he had to strike fast and would not be able to have a long siege or his men would starve.

As his army was getting closer to the city, he sent some scouts to see if any reinforcements were on the way. None reported enemy movements...and so Emir Abrar ordered the attack of the city.

The army sets into position.

- Let the battering ram break the doors!
- Yes Sire! This battle will be short....
- Looks like it...

Suddenly a scout arrived on his horse:

- What is it?
- They have received reinforcements?
- WHAT? How come we didn't see them coming?
- So what are your orders, Sire? Shall we proceed with the attack?
- No...we withdraw.
- Are we going to use the same tactic as last time and lure the enemy army into the open?
- No...we would only loose too many men again and we still wouldn't be able to take Tripoli afterwards...no, really, we go back to Cyrenaica and will wait for a better opportunity. The Zirid are defending Tripoli with too much energy...we can't achieve this on our own. We have to wait for Emir Anwaar as soon as he defeats the rebels in Lebanon.
- Yes Sire!

And so the horns blew the retreat...

The vengeance of Emir Anwaar

1053 still

Emir Anwaar was sitting in his office in Jerusalem when a messenger arrived.

- Milord, we have been informed that there is a mercenary camp near Damascus.
- This is good news...works on the Swordsmith seem to last forever.
- Captain!
- Yes Sire?
- Order the troops to get ready...we are leaving for Damascus.

And so, Emir Anwaar was able to complete his army. After a couple of days of rest in the beautiful city of Damascus, he took the lead of his army and headed to Lebanon. There, he would fight Emir Aahil once more but this time, one of them wouldn't survive the battle.

Battle begins:

- Sire...we have to protect this village.
- Men...Let's face those rebels and eliminate them once and for all!
- YEAH!!!

And so the army took position in front of the village.

Soon, the first fighting began...it was hard to tell who was who as the moon was hidden behind the clouds...still, the men were fighting bravely.

Meanwhile, Emir Anwaar had given a special order to his camel riders....they had to avoid the bulk of the enemy army and find a way to attack the enemy Marshal.

Finally an opportunity was there and the captain shouted:
- Camel riders...for the glory of Shuayb...CHARGE!!!

Aahil hadn't seen this coming and was shocked.
- Knights....defend your prince!

And a fierce battle started.

Somehow, Aahil and his knights managed to survive this attack. However, many knights had been killed and Aahil himself was wounded. Emir Anwaar was then ready to give the final strike.

- Knights...let's eliminate those rebels...with me, charge!

Shortly afterwards, his swords passed throw Aahil body and the rebellion was over!

Finally, his Nemesis had been defeated...now, he knew that nobody would ever be able to threaten him....

Administrative duties...

Early 1054

As usual, Calif Shuayb invited the various diplomats to a feast in January.  It was a good opportunity to discuss about various subjects of national importance. After supper, the Calif went for a walk in the gardens and was soon joined by the ambassadors of the Abbassids and of Pamplona.

- In the name of Amr Zain, Calif of the Abbassids, I would like to tell you that we are very interested in a trade agreement with your Caliphate. You have so many goods now that we would like to import...for a good price of course.
- I don't see any problems with that, answered Shuayb. We shall sign this treaty tomorrow.
- Thank you, Sire. To a prosperous future...

The ambassador of Alphonso, King of Pamplona, didn't have such a nice proposition.

- Sire, we are in dire need of help against the Kingdom of Italy...shall you assist us?
- Despite all the respect I have for you King, we are not in the position to help you for the moment. As you know, we are already in a full scale war with the Caliphate of Zirid and cannot send any troops to help you. I am truly sorry...
- I understand, Sire. I shall inform our King about your decision.

In the following days, Shuayb reviewed the progress of the Grand Project of the Fatimids. The treasures had enough money to finance a harbour in El Alamein. In some years, some great exotic trade good would arrive to these shores.

1st Siege of Cyrenaica
March 1054

In the fortress of Cyrenaica:

-   Sire...Emir Aadil, the marshal who opposed us in Tripoli is on his way to the city!
-   How far?
-   About 2 days, Milord.
-   Well that's plenty of time and we are safe behind those high walls...as long as they don't attack with two armies at the same time.

And so Emir Abrar organised his army and the garrisons of the city to face the enemy. They were ready when the siege began.

-   Let's break this siege....ATTACK!

And so started a new struggle for Cyrenaica....

Finally, the first attempt of Emir Aadil was repelled and he had to retreat.

-   Victory!!!
-   YEAAHHH

However, Abrar knew that the war wasn't over yet.

2d Siege of Cyrenaica
April 1054

As predicted, Emir Aadil made another attempt to conquer Cyrenaica. Once again, Emir Abrar was victorious. This time however, Aadil wasn't able to escape and died.

-   Sire...we have won once more!
-   Yeah I know, but I don't believe the Zirid will give up that easily. We have to remain here to protect the frontier.

And he was right

3d Siege of Cyrenaica
August 1054

A scout passed threw the gates of the city and soon arrived at the fortress.

-   Sire....another Zirid army, led by Emir Shallal, is heading to the city...
-   Captains!

Some minutes later, all the captains were present.

-   You know the procedures...so go. First I want to finish my tea...how can anyone attack during tea time?
-   Yes Sire...

For the third time in a row, Emir Abrar managed to repulse the attack....he wasn't afraid, but he was getting nervous not to be able to move anywhere...he was stuck as long as Anwaar wasn't there...and where was Anwaar anyway?

Meanwhile

The Long journey

1054 –The entire year

Now that Anwaar had defeated the rebels in Lebanon, he ordered his men to prepare for a long journey as they had to join Emir Abrar in Cyrenaica.
A young archer approached Anwaar.

- Milord...how will we be able to help Emir Abrar? We are so few!
- Well, we will first go to Alexandria and hire some Camel Riders...there we will also be able to replenish our troops and take a short break. Then, we will be able to help Abar. Don't worry, now...go my boy, get ready.
- Aye aye Sire!

Two days later, the army boarded a ship to Alexandria.

And so began the long journey...

- SHORE!!!

Finally...the sea had not been very calm lately.

- Prepare to leave the ship!!!

While Anwaar was reporting to the Calif and recruiting men, his soldiers rested and enjoyed the beauties of Alexandria

Anwaar entered the palace and entered the room of the Calif:

- Sire...my archer companies are complete now and i have hired two companies of Camel Riders...shall i join Emir Abrar or wait until i have a full army?

- Join him now. Together you will be very strong. Furthermore, you'll be able to complete your army in Cyrenaica as the city is full of Soldiers.

Next day, early morning, Emir Anwaars army left the city.

- Sire...we will soon arrive in Cyrenaica.
- Fine...Send a messenger to inform Emir Abrar that we are here.
- Yes Sire...

4th Siege of Cyrenaica
September 1054

In the fortress of Cyrenaica:

A scout enters running into the office of Emir Abrar, followed closely by a second one.

- Wow, wow...what's all this fuss? You first...
- Emir Shallal is attacking again...
- Well, that's no surprise, is it? We'll get rid of him again. And what news do you bring?
- Emir Anwaar will arrive shortly with an army!
- Emir An...? That's about time...I thought he would never get here. Inform the captains that we will wait until Emir Anwaar arrives before we break the Siege. He also deserves some fun.

And for once, Emir Abrar war really looking forward to a battle.

Emir Anwaar could already see the city of Cyrenaica when a scout arrived.

- Sire....Emir Abrar lets you start the attack!
- That's nice of him. Well men, get ready for action! Let's kick some Zirid butts
- YEAAAAAAHHHH

The Battle was short...the combined forces of Abrar and Anwaar was just overwhelming. The two men met right after the battle and fell into ones arms.

- I am so happy you're here now...the Zirids will now see what we can accomplish. What took you so long?
- That's a long story...I shall tell you tonight.
- Right...you're my guest tonight and we'll have great feast to celebrate this.

All the population of Cyrenaica knew now that no harm would occur to them again and so this was a night of Joy and Cheers.

The Tripoli Campaign

1055

Now that Emir Abrar and Emir Anwaar had joined forces, Emir Shuayb was expecting some changes in the war against the Zirids.

After a couple of months of preparations (Emir Anwaar had to organise many companies to complete his army and the garrisons had to be ready as they would have to be able to defend Cyrenaica by themselves as no army would be present) the two armies left the city in order to conquer Tripoli.

After a couple of days a scout arrived to Abrar and Anwaar.

- Milords...another Zirid army has crossed the boarder!
- How many armies do they have? asked Abrar...

After a short discussion, Anwaar shouted to the army.
- PREPARE FOR INTERCEPTION!!!

And so the entire army headed to the new threat.

The poor noob had no chance against the combined attack of those highly experienced Marshals...they crushed him without any pity.

Without a rest, they continued their way to Tripoli...

Nice Try

1055

In Alexandria, in the apartments of the Zirid ambassador:

- Milord...a dove has arrived with a message from our Calif!
- Give it to me

He started to read and became very embarrassed.

- Prepare my horse...I have to inform Calif Shuayb.

Half and hour later, he arrived at the palace of the Calif where other ambassadors were waiting. He went to one of the officials.

- I have an urgent message for the Calif...
- Wait a minute...I'll see if he can receive you.

After a while, he we asked to enter the throne room.

- Sire...
- Ambassador...you have something for me?
- Yes Sire, we have been at war for many years but our Calif is tired now and offers you a great peace agreement.

After reading the message, Shuayb stood up:

- I don't want to be impolite but as long as the Zirid Caliphate was winning the war, your Calif wasn't very much ready to ask for peace...and now that we are winning, he sues for peace? Inform Human, Calif of Zirid that I thank him for his offer but there's only one thing that will end this war...
- What Sire?
- When we control Tripoli...

And so the Zirid ambassador went home, wondering how he would write this information for his Calif.

Consequences

1055 still

As soon as Humam had received the information, he asked for help from the Calif of Cordoba as they were their overlord. Abd al-Rahman V, leader of Cordoba, ordered his troops to be ready as they had to defend their Vassal, the Zirid Caliphate. At the same time he sent a message to Shuayb, leader of the Fatimids.

Meanwhile, Shuayb had agreed to help the Abbassids in their struggle against the Zeta Kingdom...the fact that they had offered the province of Syria in counter part had been decisive.

The Caliphate was now very strong. The East was calm and the West was in good hands with Abrar and Anwaar marching towards Tripoli.

It was however with great sadness that the Empress was informed that her father had passed away. Shuayb was also told that he could claim inheritance if he wanted to and ask for land. Seeing his wife's sorrow and knowing how much she cared for her brother, the new king, Shuayb decided to renounce to his claims. Furthermore, those territories were too far away and very difficult to defend. That decision led to an even greater friendship between the two countries.

Situation in Cyrenaica

1055 still

Two weeks had passed since Anwaar and Abrar had defeated Shallal in the desert and then continued their way to Tripoli. The predictions of Abrar proved to be correct. He had foreseen that Tripoli would be under attack and had organised the garrisons of the city so they could withstand against an army. Effectively, Shallal, despite his defeat against Abrar and Anwaar, had reorganized his men and laid siege against Cyrenaica. Wrong decision:

Shallal's camp:

- Emir...there are no marshals in the city!
- Fine...Cyrenaica will be a fine conquest for the Zirid...the Calif will be proud of me.
- SIRE!
- What?
- They....they opened the doors and are attacking us....without a marshal...
- WHAT??? That cannot be....MEN TO ARMS!!!!

After a terrible fight, Shallal's camp was completely destroyed...the Emir died while trying to escape the fury of the population of Cyrenaica...too long had they suffered from the Zirids.

And now to Tripoli:

The Siege of Tripoli

One week later

Emir Abrar and Emir Anwaar finally see Tripoli.

- Captains!
- Yes, Sires!
- Prepare the siege....we won't attack before a day of two....our men need to rests first.

And so the captains gave quickly orders to the men...the population of Tripoli could see the numerous fires in the camps under the falls of their city...

The first 3 days, Abrar and Anwaar hoped that the city would surrender as the garrisons had no chance against that many men.

Unfortunately the city didn't surrender. The attack had been carefully planned and neither Abrar nor Anwaar wanted to wait longer...this was the right opportunity and no rescue army had been seen for the moment.

Abrar advanced to the city and shouted:

- THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE...DO YOU SURRENDER!

The city officials shouted back laughing:

- COME AND GET US!!!

While riding back Abrar whispered to Anwaar:

- Fools...can't they see that they have already lost? Tell our men to make as little civilian casualties as possible...Tripoli will have to be integrated into our Caliphate...not remain a scar...no bloodshed.

Shortly afterwards, Emir Anwaar moved in the centre:

- ATTACK!!!!

The Assault of Tripoli was short. The high experience of Abrar's and Anwaar's men made it almost pleasant. No civilian was harmed and the garrisons gave up after light losses.

When the city officials were led in front of Abrar, he slapped their faces and said:

- Remember this...men have died today because of you...now leave the city.

A messenger was sent to Alexandria...Tripoli had been conquered and many vital trade goods obtained: Parchment, Wool and Meat. Calif Shuayb would be very happy indeed.

Administrative duties...

Early 1056

The news of the victory of Tripoli spread in all the neighbouring countries and it was with no surprise that even our friends, the Abbassids, proposed a non-aggression pact.

In the Alexandria palace:

A messenger enters the Throne room.

- Sire!
- What news do you bring?
- They accepted...the Calif himself is on the way to sign the treaty.

Finally, after so many years, the Fatimids – Zirids conflict was over...

Part 5: War with the Zeta Kingdom

Prelude

1059

Calif Shuayb had believed that the situation would calm down and that he could work faster on his father's project but he was wrong. He had forgotten the war he had agreed upon when the Abbassids had offered Syria. The Zeta Kingdom had not forgotten...and so they started and invasion.

Ninoslav lead his army directly to Napoli. Surely would Napoli be able to resist such an attack. Furthermore, Abrar and/or Anwaar would surely arrive soon.

Unfortunately, the Zeta Kingdom was clever....Ninoslav wasn't alone; despot Mislav would soon join him.

That's when Abrar received the orders from the Calif to embark with his army to help the city of Napoli...but would he get there on time?

Looking at the diplomatic map of the Mediterranean, Shuayb could see that the Zeta Kingdom was mighty...and therefore a dangerous foe.

The Siege of Napoli

1059

In Napoli:

Commander Giovannini of the city guards was waiting on the entrance tower...waiting for his scouts to come back. Suddenly he heard a guard shout:

- Rider!!!

And then he saw him too, coming out of the woods in the west. He went down the tower and waited in front of the city gates. When the horseman arrived and went down off his horse, he was eagerly waiting answers to his questions:

- Which information have you been able to gather? Are the armies of Abrar and Anwaar on the way? When will the enemy's armies be here?
- Sire, Despot Ninoslav will be here in 3 days. We have no news yet of Abrar and Anwaar.
- What about Despot Mislav?
- Apparently he organised a camp in the south of the province, one week away from here...he's not moving right now.
- That's great...do you know why?
- Well...eh...Ninoslav has received more support.
- WHAT? An other army?
- Yes...led by Despot Borna...and he is only 5 days away.
- WHAT IS THIS? D DAY?
- D DAY, Sire?
- Forget it...CAPTAINS!!!

And so the garrisons in Napoli organised the defences of the city as well as they could...waiting for the assault.

Five days later, the Zeta Despots launched a fierce attack against the city...

Commander Giovannini and his men fought like lions...the battle lasted a whole day. The brave soldiers fought for every stone, every door until they were stuck in the citadel.

In the end however, after suffering heavy losses, not seeing any chance to resist longer and not having heard of any help arriving, Commander Giovannini surrendered under the condition that his men were spared. This was granted and he left the city for the province of Apulia.

Will the Fatimids lose control over Italy?

Political Tasks

Meanwhile in Alexandria, Caliph Shuayb is discussing with his various counsellors (military, commerce, foreign policy).

Shuayb talking with Commander Abdul:

- Sire, Abrar is on his way to Napoli. We don't know however if he'll be able to defend the city by himself.
- What about Emir Anwaar? Why don't we order him to join Abrar?
- The problem, Sire, is that we have an upraising in Tripoli. If Anwaar doesn't deal with it, this could be very annoying in the long run as Tripoli is a very precious province, as you know.
- Who's the rebel?
-  His name is Daanish and he wants Tripoli to join the Zirid Caliphate again.

Shuayb asking Emir Adyar:

- How's our general situation?
- I am very pleased to tell you that we have the largest country in the known world. The sad news is that the Pope is dead...they have chosen a new one who has the name of Boniface I.

Shuayb talking to Emir Adam:

- What's the situation in Tripoli...will we be able to have leather soon?
- Sire, I've invested some money to speed up the process...the tannery will be finished very soon.

And so it was. With the new trade good, the Fatimid's caliphate finally achieved its first Kingdom advantage...the goal of Aadil, father of Shuayb, was in reach.

More News

When the meeting of the counsellors was over, Calif Shuayb received the ambassador of the Papacy and invited him for dinner.

- So my friend, what news do you bring from the Doge?
- Well, as you know our relations have improved a lot and since you are a powerful neighbour * we would like to start a trade agreement.
- Well consider the deal done...the Doge will soon be able to drink our delicious wine as you know.

The both looked at each other and laughed while enjoying the delicious beverage.

*note: they don't know yet of the loss of Napoli

One week later, as Shuayb was sitting in his office, a servant arrived running...

- Sire! Your wife is giving birth!
- Finally!

Shuayb ran to his apartments and arrived just in time to greet his second son....another wonderful event.

It was in the same week that he received a message of Anwaar informing him that he had defeated the rebels in Tripoli. He would very soon join Abrar in Napoli.

Heavy battles in Italy – Part I

1060

When Emir Abrar landed in Apulia in order to go to Napoli, he was greeted by Commander Giovannini and his guards.

- Sire, we have lost Napoli to the Zeta kingdom...
- This is very bad news...we shall go to Bari first and rest before engaging the enemy...anything else?
- Well...they have at least three armies in Napoli.
- That many? In that case we shall wait in Bari until Emir Anwaar can join us...

Emir Abrar didn't like the fact that he would remain in Bari as the city didn't have any walls for protection. The Zeta Kingdom would surely attempt to expel the Fatimids from Italy.

And so it was. Two weeks later, a scout informed Abrar that the enemy had entered the province of Apulia with at least two armies.

Meanwhile, Emir Anwaar, after replenishing his troops, was leading his men to the port of Tripoli.

Emir Abrar was upgrading the miserable military structures of Bari as there wasn't even a Swordsmith. Too confident, the enemy had not aimed for the city, had started to attack villages and had split. That was a bad decision.

When Abrar saw that Borna was passing not to far from the city and with only one army, he decided to attack. Split, the enemy had no chance against Abrar's army. And so the battle began.

Poor Borna was chanceless and so he lost.

One week later, Emir Anwaar and his men arrived:

- Well old friend...it seems we won't be out of job any time soon.
- So it is, answered Abrar. Let's repel the last Zeta army out of Apulia.

Together they hunted down the army of Ninoslav...

The battle was short. Ninoslav wasn't expecting the attack of two armies as he thought that Borna was controlling the north.

Abrar, Anwaar and their men turned back to Bari to rest and prepare the attack on Napoli...

Administrative duties...

1060 still

As Abrar and Anwaar were fighting in Italy to preserve the integrity of Caliphate, Shuayb was working on its quality.

In Alexandria he ordered the construction of a sculptor's guild...time had come to decorate the wonderful cities of the Caliphate.

At the same time he started the work on a bigger project...creating admiralties in many provinces so the Fatimids could import the ultimate goods....exotic ones!
First step was to upgrade the small ports to docks. Tripoli was one of the provinces chosen to achieve that goal.
An old ally asked once more for help....this time however, Shuayb was tired:

- Can't you be at peace for once? My father has helped you many times but you always get into trouble. You kingdom is doomed and we cannot fall with you. I am sorry but we cannot help you anymore.
- I understand...I shall inform our King.

The Napoli offensive

1061

Abrar and Anwaar were now ready for the attack. They decided to attack Napoli from two sides in order to distract the enemy...or so they hoped.

Emir Anwaar was already deep in Napolitan territory when a scout arrived.

-   Sire! Despot Mislav and Despot Ljudevit are on their way two protect Napoli!
-   We will have to wait for Emir Abrar before even consider the attack...

After joining Abrar, they started to consider the attack:

-   We have to attack now, said Abrar.
-   What if we lose? We won't be able to regroup and defend Bari, countered Anwaar.
-   I know...however, this is a unique chance of eliminating two armies of the Zeta Kingdom. If they lose, they won't be able to resist anymore. Despot Mislav is their last competent Marshal...once gone, the Zetas are not a threat anymore.
-   So be it.

The next day, the offensive began. Men from both sides knew what was at stake and fought bravely

Both sides refused to withdraw till the end. The battle was terrible and even the Marshals were wounded.
Finally, the men of Commander Giovannini, who had been affected to Emir Abrar, managed to enter the fortress and open the doors. A long battle inside the walls began and lasted till very late in the morning.
The last fight happened in the highest tower...Abrar and Anwaar facing Mislav and Ljudevit.

-   Surrender...like all you men have done, said Abrar.
-   Never...if we die...so shall you.

The swords hit hard. Mislav and Ljudevit were younger and were starting to win. Abrar and Anwaar were however more experienced and so Anwaar was able to defeat Ljudevit who fell off the tower.

Abrar was facing Mislav with one knee on the ground. Mislav was hitting on the Abrar shield with fury and Abrar seemed to lose. Suddenly, Mislav raised his sword with two hands in order to give the last strike. Abrar made a fast movement on the side and his sword went through Mislav's right arm.

-   How? I was winning?
-   You can't learn tricks to an old Ape. Sorry.

And Abrar killed Mislav with one swing of his sword.

And so ended the reconquest of Napoli.

Shuayb's daily business

1062

A messenger arrived from Tripoli. He climbed up the stairs that led to the Caliph's office running.

- Sire...there's again rebellion in Tripoli. The governor wants to know if you'll send the army...
- Unfortunately, both Abrar and Anwaar are in a campaign against the Zeta Kingdom. However, there are enough men in Tripoli to keep the city safe...tell the governor to be patient. As soon as possible, I will send an army.
- Thank you Sire.

Three days later, Shuayb celebrated the sculptor's guild. The first statues were soon ready and decorated the palace.

Now that the workers had finished this great project, Shuayb ordered the construction of a stonemason. Now that he had statues, he wanted to have columns in order to have an even more beautiful palace.

Meanwhile in Apulia

Abrar had returned to Bari, while Anwaar had remained in Napoli. A scout arrived and announced the arrival of a new Zeta army. Abrar asked Commander Giovannini to join him for dinner.

-   The Zeta Kingdom is really a pain in the neck...I wonder if they'll ever give up, said Abrar.
-   I am afraid that they will remain a threat as long as they control Sicily, Sire.
-   Sicily and Crete...if we could take those, the Zeta Kingdom wouldn't control the sea anymore. I'll send a note to the Caliph, we'll see what he says.
-   I guess your right...
-   Meanwhile, we'll destroy that army...organize the troops...we'll leave tomorrow in the morning.
-   Yes Sire.

The battle didn't last long. The soldier of the Zeta Kingdom were now afraid...they had already heard too much of Emir Abrar. Furthermore, most of them were young....much too young. After the battle, Abrar let the survivors go home.

Cordoba attacks

1063

When he heard the news of the invading troops of Cordoba, Shuayb realised that he had completely forgotten that they had been enemies since the war with the Zirid.

Tripoli was well defended but these weren't just rebels.

It got worse when another Cordoba army arrived:

Calif Shuayb sent a messenger to Napoli so that Anwaar would return to Tripoli and defend the city. He then returned to his office and took a good look at the situation of the Caliphate

1064

The garrisons in Tripoli were fighting bravely against the Cordoba invaders. The province had suffered of plundering but the city wouldn't fall for a while.

Meanwhile in Alexandria, Shuayb received the Ambassador of the Doge:

- Sire, our relationship has become stronger thanks to commerce. Your victory over the Zeta troops in Italy has consolidated your position and we will be neighbours for a long time...in the name of Doge Piero, I offer you a non-aggression treaty.
- We are happy to have good neighbours and so, we gladly accept.

The Sicilian Campaign

1064 still

In the castle of the city of Bari:

- Sire...a messenger has arrived from Alexandria!
- Let him come in, said Abrar.

The man entered and handed out the message:

- So we have to go back to Tripoli and so does Anwaar? Murmured Abrar. Ahmed?
- Yes Sire?
- Prepare my horse...I will inform Emir Anwaar myself. Tell the captains to keep their men ready for when I come back.
- Yes Milord.

One week later, Abrar arrived in Napoli. Anwaar was about to eat and so he invited his old friend at his table.

- We have been ordered to Tripoli....Cordoba has sent some armies to take the province and rebels are plundering the villages.
- We will leave tomorrow for Tripoli...
- I actually have an other idea...do you remember how we talked about annexing Sicily?
- Well yes, why?
- Well Sicily is on our way, isn't it? With both our armies we could take it fast and then continue our journey to Tripoli! The Zeta Kingdom wouldn't be such a threat for our territories in Italy.
- That's a brilliant idea.

And so they planned their campaign.

When Abrar went back to Bari, everything was ready. A scout announced him that the Zeta had landed another army.

- Let them wander in our lands...for now, we shall break their supply lines.

And so both armies embarked to invade Sicily.

One week later, Emir Anwaar was camping outside the walls of Palermo. Abrar was very close. The Zeta had launched all their armies against Napoli and Apulia....Palermo was almost defenceless

When Abrar arrived, they launched a massive attack. The garrisons were overrun quickly and the men begged for their life.

Once again, Abrar and Anwaar had won....together, they were just unstoppable

Meanwhile in Alexandria:

- Sire, the Pamplona Ambassador wants to talk to you!
- Let him in...

The ambassador came in:

- Milord, the Zirid are a threat to us....will you help us?
- We have had a very long war with the Zirid...now that we are at peace with them, you want us to start it all over again? I am sorry, but we won't help you.
- As you wish, Sire

Two weeks later, the stonemason was finished in Alexandria and work began on the palace in order to include columns to the architecture.

The ambassador of the Byzantium Emperor requested Shuayb's assistance to fight the Abbassids. Once again, Shuayb refused to lead his country into a wasteful war...

End of 1064

In Palermo:

- Abrar! Get Ready! We leave for Tripoli tomorrow...
- We're not.
- We're not? What do you mean?
- We still have rebels in Italy and someone has to stay there to secure that part of the Caliphate. You're strong enough to defeat the armies in Tripoli by yourself...
- Maybe you're right...but let's travel to the harbour together.
- Deal!

And so the two armies left Palermo in order to join the coast.

Once on the sea, they parted, Abrar moving to Apulia and Anwaar returning to Tripoli. They had a lot of work to do and were preparing their men the best they could.

6 months later, all threats had been eliminated. Anwaar had crushed the armies of Cordoba and the rebels while Abrar had ended the last attempt by the Zeta Kingdom to conquer Italy.

Peace would soon be a viable option

1065

Caliph Shuayb had been pretty busy too...now that the frontiers were becoming more and more secure, he didn't have to keep to much money aside for his armies. Thus he finally could invest in an Admiralty in El Alamein where the precious exotic goods would arrive...

In Syria he started a huge project...his goal would be to have the finest tailors in the know world. In order to do that he first had to order the construction of a Dyes Workshop, a Hemp field and a Weaving Mill. Soon work began on the Dyes Workshop...the rest would follow.

1066

Sicilian nationalists claim the country for them...Shuayb orders Anwaar to break the resistance once and for all.
Anwaar obeys as soon as he receives the message...one week later his army is sailing to Sicily...

Meanwhile, in order to accelerate the works in Syria, the Caliph asked Emir Adam to supervise the project. At once, progress gets much faster.

1067

Resistance in Sicily has been silenced and the kingdom seems safe...

In July, an Ambassador of the Cordoba Caliphate arrives:

- Sire, we see no reason for this war anymore as you're at peace with the Zirid...will you sign a peace treaty?
- Yes...time has come to end this nonsense...you'll be my guest tonight for dinner.

1068

As the dyes workshop has been finished, Emir Adam ordered the building of a Hemp field. The project was going well.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Tesla, the Empress, gave birth to another child. Both Ali (18) and Rayn (9), the other boys in the family were overjoyed to have a small brother.

Calif Shuayb had not been present for the birth of his new child as he had to plan the construction of a harbour in Tripoli....another Admiralty would see the day.

1070
The great competences of Emir Adam allowed a very fast construction of the Hemp fields in Syria...he then started to work on the Weaving Mills in order to produce Linen....he was looking forward to his new shirts!

The end of the War with the Zeta Kingdom

1071

A messenger arrives in the Palace.

- Sire, I am sorry to inform you that the Zeta Kingdom is still not willing to make peace with us.
- This is really annoying....we have to focus on our economy...my fathers goal has to be achieved.

He then spent two days in his office wondering what to do. He then told is servant.

- Ask Ibrahim and Malik to join me.
- Yes Sire!

Some minutes later, both messengers entered the office.

- Sire? You have messages for us?
- Yes indeed...inform Emir Abrar and Emir Anwaar to take Crete...this is a well defended city of the Zeta Kingdom...once lost, I am sure that the Zeta Kingdom will finally realise who is the strongest.
- Yes Sire.

And so the messengers went away.

Emir Anwaar was the first to receive the message and sailed right away to Crete. He set up the camp in front of the city, waiting once more for Abrar.

Finally, Abrar arrived and they launched the attack. They had been in so many battles that they didn't even have to give orders...the men knew what they were expected to do. The battle lasted for three days and in the end, the two marshals were victorious again.

Anwaar stayed on the Island in order to organize the new province while Abrar went back to Italy.

After such a defeat, Dragomir had no other choice then accepting to cease hostilities. And so it was...peace had become reality...

Part 6:  The Merchants of Alexandria

Introduction

1072

Now that the main threats on the Caliphate had been removed, the royal family was able to focus on commerce. Ali was now ready to help his father.

- Father, what can I do to help you?
- I want you to join Emir Adam in Syria...learn from him.
- As you wish Father.

And so Ali was there when Adam started the construction of the tailor factory.

In Alexandria, there was a state visit from Mahja, ruler of the Zirid. The relation had improved since the end of the war but could still improve. Both leaders knew that.

- So my dear Shuayb...what would you suggest to improve the mood between our two nations.
- Mahja...I do know a very good way. People are happy when they have what they need. I therefore suggest that we make a trade treaty as we have so many goods and more will come.
- I think this is an excellent idea....our merchants will get here very soon.

And they enjoyed the sunset on the balcony.

1074

Emir Abdush, who only traded for gold, was called back to Alexandria.

- Abdush...you know that we have a trade agreement with the Zirid caliphate, don't you?
- Yes Sire...
- Well, your new mission is to go there and import Ink. We really need this product.
- I am happy to be working in North Africa again, Milord.

And so, after some months, the first Ink bottles were stored in the city....finally, the story of the Caliphate could be written down in a correct manner.

1075

Finally, the tailor factory was completed...the first clothes were sent in all the know world at unbeatable prices...So much that some countries asked Shuayb to allow only a certain amount of clothes to be exported. That was strange as he thought that the world was a free trade zone

Meanwhile, Emir Anwaar was ordered to Jordan as some rebels were causing trouble. Our two marshals didn't have much to do now and had almost the feeling to be policemen.
It was also in that year that the Empress finally gave birth to a girl....Shuayb was so happy now.

1077

Rayn finally became an adult.

Though second to his brother Ali, his qualities were superior. Unwillingly and with the support of his counsellors, Shuayb decided to change the successions rules. Rayn would become the next Calif for the good of the Fatimids. While disappointed, Ali accepted. Actually he was looking forward to work further as a builder with Emir Adam.

1078

Emir Anwaar was still fighting the rebels in Jordan...they were more numerous and better organised than first thought. But now, Anwaar was going for the last strike....the rebels would be no more.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Shuayb received the various ambassadors. Bari, the Khazar diplomat, requested that the Fatimids attacked again the Zeta Kingdom. However, Shuayb was a man of honour...and there weren't any legitimate reasons to declare war. So he declined.

On the other hand, the ambassador of the Papacy offered an alliance. This was a good deal as it made our northern borders in Italy even more secure.

Emir Abrar and Ali, who had finished the tailor factories in Syria, had travelled to Libya in order to build a University. This would allow the creation of books and the knowledge gained during all these years could be given to the entire world. They began this project with the construction of a library.

Shuayb, knowing that he would need many admiralties to import all the exotic goods, ordered the construction of a harbour in Crete.

Crusaders!!!

Horror....Christians have declared a crusade against us!!!!

Count Adam from Normandy has taken the lead of the invasion army...we will have to face them....

Shuayb sent a messenger to Emir Abrar so he would be ready to intervene were necessary.

Two months later, a scout arrived in Napoli:

- Milord! The Crusaders have arrived...they are currently plundering the villages.

Emir Abrar got up angry.

- Those infidels will pay...prepare my armour and tell the captains to get ready.
- Yes Milord.

And, in the middle of the night, the army left the city in order to face the barbarians from the North.

Abrar asked the scouts:

- How's the situation?
- There are many of them...and well equipped...

The Crusaders felt confident as they believed to do God's Will and they shouted:

"Deus Vult"
