I have religiously bought every yearly iteration of OOTP since 2015.

But this year, because of COVID and the state of baseball, I thought I would skip a year or two of OOTP.

Then came the sale...and at 50% off I decided to bite...OOTP '22 is now part of my library.

Boy am I glad I did.

For the first time, I started playing OOTP's online league, "Perfect Team".  What a gem!!!! (BTW, Perfect Team is only one small part of the overall functionality of OOTP....OOTP also has offline historical and current game management...want to play the 1906 Cubs vs. 1927 Yankees or even the 2020 Dodgers?  or just play 2019 all over again?...or if the current season is your thing, you can import up-to-the-minute team positions and player stats to play tomorrow's game...OOTP has you covered).

The "Perfect Team" sub game is basically fantasy baseball, but you have all the players from today through the history of baseball to pick from. Your team is then put in a league with a full schedule. Every few hours, the game runs a simulated game and collects all stats, and runs your team based on your management preferences...how often to steal, bunt, etc. After each game, OOTP generates a detailed log of the gameplay...pitch by pitch. There is even an animated "highlights" reel if you want to watch instead of read.

The interface and gameplay are fairly intuitive (occasionally I have some minor problems finding things)...even if you aren't a super fan. But the game play is much deeper than fantasy baseball since you can manage your team through semi-automated strategies...if you have a handful of guys who are fast on their feet for example, put more emphasis on stealing bases.

In previous years, I have stayed away from Perfect Team sub game because of its revenue model. That was a mistake. Sure, you can buy your way into it...but compared to World or Tanks or War Thunder, its pretty cheap. Essentially, you can buy more "perfect points" (basically 'gold coins') to buy and trade better players. But you don't have to...I have found that I can still have a bunch of fun without spending any money.

So, in the end, I am very happy with my purchase of OOTP '22 and am looking forward to OOTP '23.

It's a gem of a game.  I've bought every year since 2009ish.
Haven't done the Perfect Game yet but I love playing the
historical seasons.  Doing 1964 now.....Milwaukee Braves.
I actually went to some of the games during that season :)

Nice,

I am currently playing the '52 Philadelphia As...no particular reason for the team choice, but just wanted to play in the early 50s.  Managed to beat the Yankees in the opening game (Phil Rizzuto, Micky Mantle, Yogi Berra et. al).  But they play well...don't expect to win against them again.

Early 50s Yankees are beyond legendary. But I would be contractually obligated to take the Dodgers...until 1957 :(

OOTP, the greatest computer game the world has ever known.   More than a game its a life style. I buy every year, I gave up a long time ago fooling myself that I could resist.   I am proud that once I did wait till the All-Star break discount....but I usually pre-order like a OOTP cuck. ;)
Kind Regards,

I've considered OOTP before, as a general manager/manager experience (similar to Baseball Mogul but with significantly greater detail).

But I hear you folks talking (I think) about statistical accuracy.  My go to for that has always been Diamond Mind (not the current on-line version but the pre-Tippett sale version).

So, given that my desire is to select, say 8 - 10 real-life teams (ranging from 1902, or maybe 1893, to 2020), put them all in a single league, have them play a season using game defined pre-set lineups and pitching rotations, have the computer play all games in 5-10 minutes, let me see the results afterwards, and feel "realistic", can OOTP do that?

Yes, you can do all of that.  You can create your own league, decide how many teams, divisions etc., then import historical teams (the database goes back to the 1880s).  You can automate the games as much as you want to...completely hands off at one end of the spectrum, to managing every pitch on the other side. The game has a bewildering number of options to let the AI run things for you....or do it yourself. You can also pick the "era" you want to play in...deadball era etc.  You can let the AI select lineups, or manage them yourself.  You can also decide if you want farm leagues or international leagues or not. You can also play multiple seasons...the players will age...get injured...etc.  You can also trade and draft if that is what you want...but you don't have to. You can also train players to take other positions. So a guy who plays 2nd base can usually be taught to take 1st...but he might not be as good at it right away.

You can even build your own ballparks if you want to....

I tend to play with graphical depictions of the games and managing each pitch....  But the computer can play the game completely in the background if that is what you want. Or, you can decide to play just certain games, and automate the rest...or go half and half. In fact, the game I posted the log for was only half played by me personally. I played through the 7th inning...then let the computer do the rest.

I don't know much about Diamond Mind...but it seems very similar to OOTP...

For me, the only thing OOTP lacks is historical pictures of the real players....OOTP uses a "face generation" system...that kind of works...but since I know what Ted Williams is supposed to look like...it falls short for me. Fortunately you can turn off player pics if you want to.

As far as statistical accuracy...I can't really speak to that well. OOTP seems to have thrown in the proverbial "kitchen sink" when it comes to accuracy...and the results feel realistic to me...  One thing OOTP does however, is it rates players for many different skills...like base running, stealing, speed, outfield arm, etc. For historical players, not certain how they came up with these...  but again...they generally "feel" right. But does anyone really know how fast of a base runner Ty Cobb was? OOTP rates Cobb as a 19 year old in 1906 with a running speed of 70 while the average is about 50. Cobb gets an 80 for base stealing and a 75 for base running...and those are very, very good...again, feels right. Player ratings do change with time as players get more experience and then age. For example, Cobb at the age of 19 in 1906 does not have as good of a batting "eye" as he does in later years.

Overall, there are a lot of opinions when it comes to sports games, especially baseball because there are so many of them and loyal fans will always defend their favorite which there is nothing wrong with.  Many of the options do have some kind of demo/money back guarantee so I always encourage people to try them and decide for themselves.  Baseball fans are very passionate about the games they support and if you go into the various official forums you'll have a hard time comparing games as you can imagine since it group really loves the games they play.

Personally I don't think you can compare OOTP to games like Diamond Mind Baseball because they have two different focus areas.  In my opinion, there are roughly (3) categories of baseball games.

Career Management - OOTP, Baseball Mogul, Puresim (not supported anymore but there are hints the original developer starting a new version), etc.
Season Replay - Diamond Mind, Digital Diamond, ActionPC, Replay, Strat, etc.
Arcade/Hands on - MLB the Show, etc.

I have owned just about every version of OOTP and use to play it all the time.  But over the years, so much has been included with options, it can be overwhelming at times to ensure you have everything setup correctly and then manage everything that is going on.  Certainly there are AI assist options and templates for starting leagues but even with those sometimes the game just feels "big" and too much like work.  In the earlier versions, it seemed much more manageable for some reason and just enjoyed it more back then.  With all that said, if your looking for a career management type of game (i.e. progression, trades, building teams, etc.), I can't argue that OOTP is the best out there right now and I still buy the new versions.  But for playing historical one-off season replays, I am not sure it's the best option although you do get the historical stuff included in the game price versus having to pay for each season like most other games.

With the Season replay games there is no career management and your focus is playing a single season to see how you compare against real life.  The main activity is setting up the rosters/rotation/batting orders/strategy and playing out the individual games.  These games appear to be finely tuned to try and match real life outcomes within reason.  Often people will say these games have better historical outcomes and that's not a knock on OOTP as it focus is much more vast while these games focus largely on the one thing.  Even making this statement is subjective since some OOTP fans do believe they have good historical outcomes.  I have played most of these games and they all have their strengths/weaknesses (i.e. how they play, cost, support, etc.) so can't really tell you whether Diamond Mind should be your choice or not.  Personally I play ActionPC the most but that is mostly because I play all their other games (i.e. hockey, basketball, football, golf, etc.) as well.  Most of these have a money back guarantee/demo so I highly recommend trying them before deciding.

As for the arcade/hands on games, not going to spend a lot of time on them as I don't play them much.  This year was the first time I could play MLB the Show and it seems like a very good game.  I just prefer my sports game to be more strategy and less about me actually controlling the players.  Certainly seems to have a deep franchise mode but haven't spent a lot of time analyzing how accurate.

Just my two cents....in the end its great that we have all these choices.

You can go to the OOTP Forums and download real life photos.  They even go back to the early years.  I'm using them now in my 1964 season.

I have had about three versions of the game.  The only item that was a pain was the stadiums.  You had to go on Steam and join one of the workshops to download the old stadiums.  Then, I would start the season and the stadiums wouldn't show up on the screen.  I decided to move on and not play anymore.
