Title: NWS- Rule the Waves 2
Post by: Rayfer on October 30, 2021, 02:58:42 PM
Been thinking of getting this one for awhile now but I remember an old  thread with complaints about difficulty in downloading and activating the game.  Anyone have these issues? Should I be wary? I've purchased board war games from NWS (great prices by the way) but never a computer game.  Thanks.

Didn't really have issues, but uses a scheme where you need the company to provide you a code that is used to tie the game to your computer.  Other games do this too, just a matter of whether bothers you. Although not my favorite method, didn't stop me from buying.

I'm waiting for the DLC that brings it into the jet age.

No issues for me either.  Pretty fast turn around on getting code. Easy install. Much easier than other publishers...looking at you Battlefront.

Unfortunately, the owner of NWS, Christopher Dean, has passed away. He seemed like a great guy who was very passionate about RTS 1 and 2. I once had an interaction with him and he was very responsive and polite.

Here's a link: https://nws-online.proboards.com/thread/6208/christopher-dean-passed-away-read

It looks like there may be some downtime before William Miller (the administrator) gets things back on track. I hope his legacy lives on and expands.

Best regards,
CC

Yeah bought a lot of HPS stuff from him way back. Always a good person to buy from.

Very sad.

Guys...we have a memorial thread here: http://www.grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=26051.0 (http://www.grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=26051.0)

Let's keep posts regarding Chris' sad passing in that thread since we will have further discussion on RTW here.

Thanks.

Great, I've been wanting to add this to my collection of unplayed games.

Yeah. I was waiting for the missile and jet age dlc, but I want to support these guys and went ahead and got it. Seems like a better system than the old too.

Quite tragic when that happens. A similar thing happened with Bismarck; a fellow grog and great writer who passed away a few years ago. His wife passed within a week of him going. Very sad. :(

Ditto... I am deciding between this and UA: Dreadnoughts. Just the learning curve on RTW2  kind of holds me back. I have the demo and have yet to grok any of it.

RtW2 is a great game IMHO. Proof positive that you don't need great graphics to have a great game.

But if RtW2 and Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts had a baby...I would be in heaven.

I always dreamed of seeing the RTW ship designer in a sci-fi game like Aurora. That would be getting close to my ideal game. LoL

The ship design features in Aurora are extremely detailed...like EXTREMELY. But there is no visual component to it. Even seeing a silhouette of the vessel with locations for weapons and module placement would be awesome.

Yeah I need something visual - a silhouette would be perfect. Or to take things further a system like the one in Ultimate Admiral...it's not perfect but it is definitely fun.

That will most likely never happen in Aurora or any game with its depth. But, hey, its ok to dream, right?

Maybe one day in the far future GameLabs will put together a spacefaring game...

Interesting news, they have now removed the drm from the game after having issues with it.  No longer part of the game.  Although respect authors protecting their work, wasn't necessarily a fan of how it was implemented.

Not super surprising, their DRM scheme always seemed like a big PITA to manually manage.

It's only surprising based how strong they defended the need for it when released and how it would never be a problem for customers.

But times change and glad they revisited it....kudos to them.

If you buy the game now by digital download, would that have the drm?  Just thought of buying it.  Thanks

They released the above patch to remove their drm.  I would assume any new purchases wouldn't have it to start with.  Even if it did, applying the patch would remove it.

That is still an important difference. I don't want aggressive DRM on my system, even temporarily.

Best place to confirm is with the developer on their forums.  Can't imagine it not being removed for new purchases, but no way to confirm that since I already own it.

I don't believe their DRM was aggressive.  I think it just did a snapshot of your hardware and incorporated it into the activation code so that you couldn't use that code on a different computer.
