Title: Up-grade project
Post by: bob48 on February 15, 2018, 07:06:31 AM
I'm looking at doing an upgrade to the wife's PC.

She has a spare slot for a 2gb RAM stick which will be DDR3 1333mhz to match the 6gb she already has.

A new NVidia GPU, the favourite at the moment being a 1030 (to replace the existing 650). This looks likes the best card we can get and remain within budget.

This will also require a new PSU, so we have selected a Corsair 650w as that will give plenty of extra oomph for the price.

Any advice / comments would be welcome.

Sounds like a good plan to me.   O0

Make sure you upgrade to more private browsing so your new virtual VR history is not accidentally viewed by Misus Bawb

No chance of that, we have our own PC's.

You may need to consider some more cooling? Maybe another fan? The 1030 is a pretty big leap over the 650...although it probably has its own built-in cooling system.

Good point, JH. I had not thought of that. I'll look into it - thanks!

Edit. just checked and there are 2 versions; a 'silent' model that just has a very large heat-sink, and another which has a sink and a fan. They are both 'low profile' models.

I think my preference is to go for the version with the fan.

Its Win10. We're OAP's on a pension and run what we afford, not what we would like to run.

In fact, bring it yourself and you can set it up for her. I'll put the kettle on and make a nice cuppa.
