I'm excited! I just put up a preview of it over at the Wargamer: http://wargamer.com/article/3166/mobile-gaming-battle-academy-preview
I'm giddy.
Nice preview Scott. Thanks for the heads up.
It's released:

It's $20.... steep for an app but it is a really good game.

$20? Good luck with that.

Interesting statement but you are not alone. Crowd on BGG feel the same way. But why?
Having just bought an iPad and searching the app store (what a pain that is) for quality wargaming, I'm not finding aynthing....
Sure some time waster for a buck or 2 but really good quality games are non-existant.
The PC veriosn of the game costs $30 to download. Why is $20 for the exact same game too much just becasue it's on the iPad?
GMT just announced that they have a deal to port Command & Colors Anients to the iPad. I bet their games will cost a similar amount.
If no one will buy these great games for what they are worth, then I'm pretty sure we'll never see worth while gaming on the Pad....
Pretty sad actually...
i also wondered about LB's comment. looks like the game is identical to the PC Mac version and you can play multiplayer vs different os players.
it still is a high price for the platform. there are some quality titles for ios devices, but they hardly ever cross the 7buck mark. i wonder how that plays out on this platform. i would definately be interested in this title... seems to be the right game for an ipad
It's a gamble IMHO.
The app market buys stuff for $2 and $3. The perception is that a $5 is asking for a lot.
Those gamers are used to getting great gameplay from a $3 game like Words with Friends. I think asking anyone to shell out $20 in the app market is crazy because I don't think most gamers *want* $20 games.
I can predict one thing for certain: whether Slitherine sells no games or 50,000 they'll issue a press release in the next week announcing how it's a smash success.

I certainly agree with this... I hope it works.

;D , also probably true.
I guarantee it will be filled with over the top superlatives.
Let me toss in there that David Heath was really smart about his PR.
He *never* bragged that X game would be the new Y-killer.
If the fans or critics said it, it was great.
But he never boasted of that himself - just in case it wasn't quite as great as he said.
That kind of restraint is missing with the new management. Watch and see.
I congratulate Slitherine -the fïrst app tö lock up"

You're kidding.
No, obviously not.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys. Congrats!
You using an iPad 1 Jim? I'm on my 2 and haven't found any issues. Although I have had lock ups with other apps before like GTA3, I think it's the iPad itself sometimes.
It was in an MP game on my iPad. My PC is still MIA.
I'm finding double tap useless after the first unit.
Is it just mp games?
No
Maybe we should name this the Battle Academy iPad QA forum?

Nah that's what this is for: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=103&sid=efd97f59776c6d3a340758f0c628a219
If I already own some of the expansions for PC do I need to re-purchase them for the iPad version should I decide to
get that?
Nothing. I just got the iPad because my PC is still down.

Unfortunately because how iTunes works you can't transfer your expansion pack ownership to the iPad.

I'll probably give the iPad version a pass then as it would end up being $50 altogether.
I'm going to stick with just the base game for my iPad, I always seem to hit ,y hard drive max space after a few days or so. Should have gotten the 64gig.
The BGG crowd will likely burn this at the stake for the price. They already are, in some ways, but they are a persnickety bunch when it comes to app pricing (they paradoxically complain about a $5 app while simultaneously paying $79.99 for a board game).
I tend to think the pricing scheme was too high as well. Given the limitations of the iPad, I can't think that pricing Battlefield Academy iOS at not too much less than the same game for PC is a strange move. The highest price iOS game I know is Warpgate HD, for ~$12, and that is an open-ended, near infinite replay space exploration sim (like Space Rangers). The other is Chaos Rings (~$14) a JRPG like Final Fantasy. Chaos Rings has the FF fanboi element to it, so it did well despite the price. In comparison, BA is more limited in replay than Warpgate and far less fanboi appealing than Chaos Rings.
And the target demographic is known to be picky about App prices.
$10 would have been the "buy it now" mark, IMHO.
I'm no even sure at $10 I'd pop on it if I didn't know what it was.
A $20 pricing strategy smacks of greed and tone deafness when it comes to iOS app pricing.
Cheapo app purchases I don't really read well into aside from ratings on iTunes. Games of higher prices such as five bucks and up I google and read reviews. Seeing a twenty buck sticker will make people google to see what's the deal with the game and probably stumble onto other wargames. If you're familiar with wargames you will know the names and know what you're getting yourself into. Fresh faces will more than likely need some time to read up on the title before purchasing. After that though they may awaken their inner strategy game nerd.
I'm just hoping this will get other strategy games on the iPad, like Civil War Generals or some Warhammer titles.
No idea why Games Workshop hasn't decided to join the money making fray of the iOS. I'm sure they are looking into it.
I wouldn't be surprised. The tablet is still in its infancy in relation to its desktop analog. I'm sure we'll be seeing much more impressive tech in the next 10, heck, even 5 years.
I'm personally waiting for the holographic stuff like in Star Wars.

It's no fun if you always have to let the Wookie win...

I don't know, C3PO seemed upset about EVERYTHING!
The 1.1 update is out with new interface options like a bar with a nest unit option, table top view, etc. Took care of my interface problem.

Yes it is! Actually, I started off watching Robotech when it was on Cartoon Network, which then led me to find the Macross series, which is pretty great. The avatar is from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0P5e3Qt2lM

While this is true it will always be in your iTunes library.
