yeah that pretty much describes me (type 6, unarmed, on the rare runs!) although im still in the far flung galaxy still heading in towards the most popular space lanes

When I finally get the proper funding, I'm going to take my Asp PvP and hunt some players along the Lave spacelanes.  They're thick around there.

One thing I did notice is that I have been interdicted significantly fewer times by players in the Asp as opposed to the Lakon Type 6, so just the intimidation of its potential firepower wards off some of the less well equipped bad guys.

I guess they're afraid of getting an Asp kicking.

Sweet so far.  Very multipurpose.  Pretty much what I hoped the Cobra would do, but didn't.  It maneuvers as well as the Cobra with significantly more firepower and much better weapon convergence.  Fantastic jump range and just a lot more utility.  The downside is cost, cost and more cost.  The class 5 and 6 internals are awesome, but they are pricey.

It can explore, fight or haul cargo.  I am really liking the concept of turning it into a gunship, it'll just cost a lot to go that route, so I'm trading with it first.

I think I'm going back to a viper. I have enough cash to trick it out and truthfully, I've never liked flying more. Trading doesnt suit me so as long as I'm just going to kill people... When I get enough for an asp, I may do that

The Viper is still my favorite.

Best comparison of Viper to Asp is a Viper is a P-51 and and Asp is a P-38.  I'm still partial to the P-51.

Biggest downside of the Asp is operating cost.  Wear and tear, even if you're careful and avoid combat, is prohibitive, in the 60k or greater range for a long supercruise or a trade circuit with a lot of jumping.  Throw in a combat where some percentage of hull gets taken off and a good cruise can run in the hundreds of thousands.

Sadly, I think because if its wear and tear the Asp is best suited as a trader, not as a explorer, which is odd considering that's its specialty.  I also can't see a Gunship build doing more than breaking even with intensive combat.

This is actually the problem as you class into the bigger ships.  The Asp, with a good positive income, is manageable.  However, the bigger ships that come after the Asp can have repair bills in the millions after a long run with a few dents from combat.  That pretty much forces trading as a primary profession as the others just don't have the income to keep up.  The Viper and Cobra are the last really cost effective ships.

Its sad because right now, other than accruing wealth to buy bigger and tougher ships, I don't really see any incentive to keep playing. They really need to develop some system that lets the player build an empire. Owning a few ships and being able to pilot them one at a time just isn't enough.

The game will ALWAYS be on my harddrive, but it needs a spark to make it something I will want to continue playing regularly.

Sounds like Jarhead is making his Asp an AC-130

He's trading in his Viper for an A..A...A..A...Aaasp.  You ought to know right now.

Four light hard points for pulse lasers, is that all you get for your money?

Well you ought to know right now......

Um..sorry.  Stopping here, showing my age.

I have a good rares route right now, my intention is to earn enough to then buy a bounty hunting vehicle on the side and specialise in taking down only human pirates - what, how and when is beyond me at the moment though

I have been playing Euro Trucking Simulator 2 this week, and having a lot of fun doing so, and it really made me think of E:D.  I can kinda understand how some of the things that would add color to Elite like galactic wars and politics, fleet movements, space guerilla warfare on the edges, that sort of thing, would constitute a very large project and are perhaps worthy of being rolled out at later dates as part of an expansion.

But in ETS 2, there are several categories of loads you can haul, and various distances you can haul them, and you have to level up to unlock different kinds of loads and longer, bigger-money hauls.  Something like that would've been super-easy to put in this game, and would give you something else to aim for beyond "pimping my ride."  Why not?

ETS 2 also has the ability to buy multiple trucks, hire truckers to drive them, and manage the company's operations after you graduate from being a 1-truck guy.  In fact, you start as a 0-truck guy and just get hauling contracts where trucks are provided to you.  This might be a little harder to implement than the simple leveling-up above, but not that hard.  Why don't we have it?

ETS 2 is way, way less impressive as a feat of programming, but as of now, it is a way better game.

I continue to have high hopes for E:D's future, because it is a heckuva game shell, but the devs need to figure out how to look around at other games and find things that make those games fun.  E:D is awe-inspiring, but once the awe wears off, the fun is thin.
Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before.
