Pitchers and catchers report next week! Finally some sanity returns to the world.
Nice site with spring training schedules and activities. http://www.springtrainingconnection.com/reportingdates.html
Well the Royals officially announced the signing of Jason Hammel today. Nice pick up, but also a little bittersweet.
This already?
Don't you have a floundering Bruins season to worry about? :P
The worrying is over. And I'm not drunk enough to start caring about the Red Sox.
I feel you. It'd take a lot of alcohol to make be care about the Red Sox too.
Hah. I don't give rat's ass about baseball, but I'm happy to lord the Red Sox over fans of other loser teams.
Like the Yankees?
I hope both of you get your dick stuck in your zipper.
Especially the Yankees fans.
And now the season has officially started! Play Ball!
Now I'm looking forward to it!
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........
Watching baseball is like watching grass grow...except with a baseball game in the way.
I read MLB is going to try out a new extra inning rule in the rookie league. If the games goes into extra innings each team will start their inning with a runner on 2nd.
I read Thant too. Appearantly Joe Torre is supportive of the change. I think it's a pointless change.
Sounds dumb.
I think they are just looking to shorten games. I could see doing something like that in the 13th inning but not in the 10th.

There are a lot of other ways they could and should shorten games.
I think they already use the runner on second rule in International play.

I like the DH. Pitchers pitch, not hit. I want to watch pitchers hit like I want to see the right fielder pitch to every 9th hitter.
Bah, you play baseball. That means you play baseball, not little pieces of it. Fielders field, why do they hit?
And while they're at it they should get rid of base coaches as well. The player is doing the running and it's his job to make the call. >:D

Excited about the new season....except the outfield. Cleveland's outfield makes me nervous.
Well I know I have one game on the docket this summer to watch live. The father-in-law are going to Kaufman Stadium to watch a Royals and Yankees game.
can anyone confirm/deny this one?
I can't confirm or deny it but it's pretty damn impressive if it's true.
Maddux was an outstanding and dominate pitcher. I'd definitely place him in my top 5 all time easily.

18 out of 31.
Ugh..is all I can say about the start of the season for the Royals. Not good. On the bright side the Twinkies are looking good.
How many teams do you root for? 29?
Kirby Puckett and George Brett.
I know at one time Kirby had gotten big enough to mistaken for a team. Hadn't realized Brett did, too.
Kirby was a great human being. Too bad, he left us so soon.
He had some epic moments in the World Series. Sure he was a little rotund but the man could play.
Anyway. I've always pulled for those two teams. Odd I know.
I know you pull for both those teams. Just giving you a little ribbing. You would think after the success KC had after Kauffman opened up the purse strings that MLB's richest owner, Carl Pohlad, would do something similar. No such luck.
The Twins ownership can certainly be hard to understand sometimes.
Royals so far cannot hit and bullpen has been horrible. It's going to be a long season I fear.
it's 162 games - it's supposed to be a long season
I'm thinking long season as in sub-500. The hitting should turn around a bit, but the bullpen is a shell of the last 4-5 seasons.

The One Stat That Explains Every MLB Team's AprilQuoteThe Royals are hitting .210 as a team.
Kansas City ranks last in almost every offensive category — the Royals have scored fewer runs all season than the Nationals have in the past week — but barely edging over the Mendoza line as a team is perhaps the most embarrassing offense. I wrote last month about 2017 being a make-or-break season for the Royals; at this point, they're positioned for a July fire sale.
The KC hitting has been horrendous this season and the bullpen was gutted in the off season. Fortunately we are on track to win the series again in 28 years.
Red Sox wish they could play the Twins everyday.
Damn is Houston knocking the shit out of the ball. 17 freaking runs tonight. Unbelievable.
I ended up with Altuve AND Correa in the GH league this year. Super happy with both picks :)

The Charleston River Dogs got in some hot water for mocking Tim Tebow at a recent Sally League game. A Yankee Bitch in the Deep South.... Fascinating
It'll be interesting how Yost decides to use Melky Cabrera. Replace Gordon in LF who has had a shitty year at the plate but is still a stellar fielder or replace Moss as the DH. Moss hasn't had a great hitting season, but better than Gordon. I suspect he'll become the new regular DH and do some platooning in LF with Gordon.

Why the Astros' lineup is built to roll through October (http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20906716?fb_action_ids=10110741881919445)
QuoteThe Astros' rare blend of power and contact ability made their lineup a challenge for opposing pitchers to navigate during the regular season, and they're on a roll entering their AL Division Series against the Boston Red Sox. During a memorable four-day span last week, they outscored the Sox and Texas Rangers by a combined 49-8 to become the first team to win four straight games by nine or more runs since the Detroit Wolverines achieved the feat in 1887.
"This is the way our team is built,'' catcher Brian McCann said. "We've got 12 guys that work counts. We've got 12 guys that swing inside the strike zone. Our lineup flows from top to bottom. We put pressure on you up top, and the guys at the bottom can hurt you as well. There's no letup.''
and also
QuoteHouston's 7-8-9 hitters have a collective slash line of .268/.327/.477 and an OPS of .803. For the sake of comparison, the average OPS of a team's No. 3-4-5 hitters this season is .803.
then again...
1998 Astros slash line (not counting the hitting stats of the pitchers) .289/.367/.453
2017 Astros slash line (not counting the hitting stats of the pitchers) .283/.347/.480
The '98 Astros played in a pitchers' park; the '17 Astros in one of the most hitter-friendly parks ever built near sea level.
The '98 Astros were a serious hitting machine, with 5 guys (and one pitcher!) hitting over .300 and another 2 at .289 or better.
The '17 Astros have 4 guys hitting over .300 and Gurriel sitting on .299, and no hitting stats for pitchers b/c they changed leagues (which, given the lack of an 'easy out' in the lineup gives *everyone* some protection).
The '98 Astros were an offensive juggernaut that's completely forgotten b/c they won all of 1 postseason game as the Padres' staff pitched about 28349634578754 levels above where they should have on their way to a World Series loss to the Yankees.
Let's hope 2017 goes better.

Bases loaded. This could put it out of reach.

If Gonzalez could just stand there and take a hit, he would have brought in another run.
There's 2 more for the Stros
And the solo shot by Altuve should do it.
The question now is how many games the Sox win before the series is over....I give them one.
A few people here are predicting Astros sweep. Not sure that will happen.
Typical Red Sox behavior. Comes from getting Charlie Brown'd by the Yankees for 86 years.
It was a good run.
The only thing worse than a dickhead Sox fan is a dickhead Yankees fan.
There are dickheads for every sport for every team. But some teams have majority dickhead fans. Like the BoSox.
I'm not arguing that Sox fans are dicks, but Yank fans aren't any better.
Of course not.
Fair point.
Woo! That game was a bit of a heart attack. Yankees get Kluber's worst start in probably 4 months, get an 8-3 lead, yet still lose. DELICIOUS!

You know I'm an Indians fan, right? Have been since I got in to baseball in the early 90s. I cheer for the Jays just because they're the only team Canada has, though I miss the Expos. :-[
Nope. Thought you were a Jays fan. So I guess I will echo Gus, "Suck it." :P
It's a good go to insult when you want to reserve 'may a sweaty CC Sabathia sit on your mom's face' for another time.
Now now, I have no hate for CC. He was an ace for Cleveland for quite a few years, and who doesn't love an overweight pitcher?
May Bartolo Colon play forever.
Buh-bye Red Sox
Scherzer's looking good tonight.
So is Quintana
I would laugh heartily and long at the Red Sox failure to advance, but, I am pretty sure the Yanks are going to join them shortly. And Quintana has been much better in Chicago after the trade than before.
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP
Poor Gus. He could really use a hawt lesbian vampire.
Look, if there is any team in professional sports that has the "Playoff Magic," it's the Yankees. You don't win 27 World Championships without a bit of luck. Having a whipping boy like the Red Sox never hurts either ;)
Except when you have them down 3-0 and can't close the deal.
Right now Gary Dirty Sanchez is my hawt lesbian something or other.
With a lead in the 9th in all three games after that. And I am ok with that. As many years as Boston folded for New York, I was actually glad for the Sox to be able to dredge up some magic of their own.

He wasn't a great manager, but firing him is not going to solve that team's problems.
The Red Sox mystify me. They're a pretty good team on paper, though sporting pitching depth is iffy, but they should do damage. Yet two years in a row they've gotten their asses kicked in the ALDS.
And of course the Indians lost. Luckily, I've picked enough teams to cheer for who consistently fall apart in the playoffs (Penguins being the exception) that I'm used to collapses by now. :buck2:

No team has ever beaten the Yankees and Red Sox in the same playoffs. While that sounds daunting, it's only been possible since the Wild Card was instituted in 1994. Still, that's 20+ years. Houston has the ability to change that this year. We will see what we will see. GO YANKS!!!

chuckling thru the tears at this one...
https://www.sbnation.com/2017/10/22/16515638/astros-world-series-alex-bregman-throw
QuoteThe Houston Astros, the butt of every baseball joke just a few years ago, are going to the World Series. There are a lot of reasons for this. They had to lose so many games that they were able to draft Carlos Correa before anyone else. They had to scout, secure, and develop Jose Altuve. Charlie Morton had to go to the 97-mph-fastball store and get him a 97-mph fastball. Someone had to teach Lance McCullers, Jr. his curveball, and someone else had to have the confidence that led to him throwing 24 of them in a row to finish his four-out save. Justin Verlander's parents had to meet each other.
It's a long, long list.
What I'll remember from Game 7 of the ALCS is the play. Or, The Play. The dumb, daring, brilliantly executed play that changed everything. You don't have to believe this is why the Astros are going to the World Series. This is why I believe the Astros are going to the World Series.
and later in the same article
QuoteOne grounder was going to be enough to tie the game. And when that grounder tied the game, there would still be runners on base with just one out. The foundation would tremble. A couple shingles would fall off the roof. The bullpen would stir, but there wouldn't be anyone overflowing with confidence in there. That one, lonely home run wasn't any match for the Yankees' continuous onslaught.
That's the backdrop for The Throw. Or, The Play. Or, as I like to call it, The Holy Hell What Are You Doing, Alex Bre gman, Ha Ha, Just Kidding, You Beautiful Bastard Play.
When Bregman fielded the ball awkwardly like that, the runner was halfway to home. I don't care if the runner is Greg Bird, Yadier Molina, or Bartolo Colon doing cartwheels. The Astros needed outs. They needed to stay out of the big inning. It stunk that a wild pitch got the tying run to third with just one out, but that was the past. The future was keeping the game close. Bregman threw home anyway.
He threw it there. HE THREW IT THERE.
I am happy. The Yankees went further than I thought they would this year, that's for sure. Especially considering I was unsure if they would even get to the wild card. The challenge no way is to keep most of these young Yankee players on the team for next year.
It was a very good year for the Yanks. They exceeded just about everyone's expectations.

Yeah, that's just weird. Is there a requirement for them to fire the manager after a certain period of time or the team explodes or something?
I have to believe that a) things went really south behind the scenes or b) Girardi wanted out. I really just can't imagine it any other way.
Ok, maybe it could be that management wants their own guy in there to shepherd the 'Baby Bombers,' into a very bright future.
Girardi has openly stated several times that he'd been missing his family. Maybe the Yankees were ready to move on, but Girardi gave them the ammow
Maybe he'll be the next Billy Martin.
Admit it, most of y'all fell asleep before the end of Game 5
The Ringer summed it up pretty well
QuoteWhen it started 25 years ago, Game 5 of the World Series represented an opportunity for Dodgers lefty Kershaw to once and for all stamp out his reputation for underperforming in the playoffs, and through three scoreless innings and one time through the order, it looked like that's exactly what he was going to do. Kershaw entered the fourth inning with a 4–0 lead after his opposite number, Keuchel, had given up three runs in the first and another in the fourth.
Then Kershaw started to lose it. He walked George Springer to lead off the fourth, then retired Alex Bregman on a seven-pitch at-bat. Altuve singled, then Carlos Correa doubled to left to plate Springer and open the book on Kershaw.
Correa's double, all but forgotten in the larger story of the game, had a peculiar effect. The first run of the game, particularly against a pitcher like Kershaw, is an important psychological victory, but Correa's fourth-inning double was more like cracking open the Well to Hell, turning Game 5 from a routine, if somewhat boring, Dodgers victory into a trans-Atlantic convoy to the Island of Not Being Able to Feel Your Extremities.

I guess we missed the "best game evah" here. When I went to bed it was 4-4 I think. All of them? No idea. Not sure there's a U-Haul that's affordable enough for that. :buck2:

I don't want to get between you and Star, dude. :dreamer:
That's an UGLY place to be. :-"
The organist at Dodger Stadium has played The Doors, The Who, and the Game of Thrones theme.
Now it's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and the Star Wars theme

Congrats to the Houston Astros-- 2017 World Champs!
Correa just made his best play of the night, after the game was over
ha! The Ringer mocked this one up pretty quick :)
(look at the date)
Didn't watch the whole game, maybe part of the 2nd and 3rd innings. Went to bed at the normal time. I figure there's plenty enough people in H-town right now that are dragging ass; I didn't need to be one of them.
I was up anyway. I been working on staying up late to catch Santa Claus when he comes down that chimney this year. I missed him last year cause I nodded-off for a second. That fat f---er can MOVE!
I had Darvish on my fantasy team. He sucked. I couldnt bekieve he was a starting pitcher in the WS.
Apparently he was tipping pitches. Perez explained it on Mike & Mike this morning
Must be a bad tipper.
They changed pitchers what, three times in the first two innings? ;D

But he was pretty good once he got to LA.
Two years in a row now that we've had a pretty good World Series. Which probably means we're due for a boring and one-sided drubbing.

And then he ran into a team that's seen him about a dozen or so times in the past 2-3 years.
Astros play the Rangers a LOT, and that means Houston's seen a lot of Darvish.
Poor Verlander. He can't go to the World Series Celebration because he has to go on his honeymoon with Kate Upton. Some guys just can't win! :P
