Having started the front screen Parma AAR as a count (voted for by the people of Grogheads) i have seen a whole different side to the game. So, without further ado ive decided to start an AAR here as one of the German Counts to share the experience with you guys here, a) because im loving it and b) for any of you who want to see if its possible, and indeed how to rise from lowly count to HRE!!
During the voting LB suggested he would like to see a German game based around Brandenburg and then forming Germany. I started the game to pick Brandenburg but he's already a Duke, so i picked Altmark, a vassal of Brandenburg and a count in his realm.
Our primary goals then are to capture, cajole or usurp the Duchy of Brandenburg, spread our power out with carefully selected marriages, Hapsburg style, and then start collecting the Duchys for the Kingdom of Germany.
And its much easier said than done!!!! As the King of Leon i threw Duchies and Counties about without a thought for the impact it had on those families and provinces at a lower level, but at that lower level you have to scrap for every crumb from the HRE's table, even your duke's table. The first obvious obstacle is that my Duke has more troops at his disposal than i do, even if i can fabricate a claim. Secondly he's a Duke, i cant just ask him for his lands, or even rise to a rival Duchy without his permission - goddammed high society and its rules!
So, very first goal is to capture some other lands to be able to rival Brandenburg when i call for independence................

Just reread some of the earlier posts, and noticed you were going to work on collecting Lubeck.
This could be either good or bad for your holdings.
Lubeck was the seat of the Hanseatic League. A lusty, tempestuous group of traders who tried to dominate th Baltic Sea.
They were the gnomes of Zurich of their day with tons of gold squirreled away.
However, they were free traders in every sense, and would not easily be brought under control.
Not sure if the game represents them, or how they would play out. However, if you could tax them, you could become a rather wealthy man overnight. (Assuming they are willing to pay the tax.)

AFAIK its just represented as a rich province, its independence maybe the way in what you say above is represented, ill let you know when its mine

Is sending a spy to steal technology a new ability that comes with Sword of Islam? I've not seen the option in my games. I can see uncover plots, build spy network, or research sneaky stuff.

We call to arms and summon the Saxon band again, we march on Mecklenburg - all of it!
3 days into the attack the HRE also realises theres a huge Duchy with noone defending it, its a race to to a 100% warscore - above i have 28% the HRE has 2%.
I need to split my forces and make sure that im controlling the siege in each province in case the HRE gets in on the action. In the screenshot ive totally occupied Mecklenburg the county, and am now marching toward Werle - im desperate to prevent anyone else starting a siege.

This in effect makes me larger than Brandenburg. Picture the scene from Red October when Sean Connery gets out the 'secret plans' from the safe, and now make him a bald German Count...........

Now that we have some land, and the increase will make an actual difference, i up the feudal tax to bring in a few more groats and then the province improvement program can begin.
After taking Mecklenburg the demesne count shot through the roof - I keep the county seats and the ownership but let the internal baronies and bishoprics go to very carefully picked council/court members and my son.
You can see on the map the HRE's slipping grasp on the realm - those provinces with borders have declared, and won their independence

Snigger, my army is twice as big and it seems the Duke has lost Anhalt to the Duchy of Saxony, its a fight for the one province - if i win that i can claim Brandenbug and be holding 66% of its de jure territories that make up the Duchy and take that Duchy too.

With a bit of cash in the bank we start improving the provinces - always start with your home province as its the one that generally will stay with you through the game, unless youre conquered, and then it doesnt really matter anyway

With the Medium Crown Authority Law passed it means those vassals within the HRE cannot declare their own wars within the HRE. Us budding Dukes and Kings eager to expand our lands have to set our sights further than the HRE for now - i start with Denmark. Lubeck is already part of the Duchy of Holstein, with Holstein itself it gives us a good chance of usurping the Duchy - the only downside here is the King of Denmark has a massive army - ill take the claim and decide on it later
