Title: Eliminate One Song from the Universe
Post by: BanzaiCat on February 03, 2018, 11:56:49 AM
A friend of mine posted this question on FB and I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's choices (especially Brant's, heh).

If you had a magic button that you could press to eliminate one song, any song, what would it be?

For me, hands down, it's a simple answer: Marcy Playground's 'Sex and Candy.' I cannot stand that song. It hurts me to even go and look it up on YT for the link. The singer sounds like he's given up on even trying to sing and kind of throatily yodels it through a cracked vent of phlegm and lack of talent.

Just thinking of all the songs I hate is causing option paralysis to set in.

Fuck. So many I hate beyond reason.

We Built This City - Starship

Got My Mind Set on You -  George Harrison

I've Got a Brand New Pair of Rollerskates - some whore

Achy Breaky Heart - some retard

The Way - Fastball

My Sharona - The Knack  (do NOT listen to that song within 48 hours before going for a long run)

I've got a few more, but my subconscious is purposely blocking them, and I'm OK with that.

LOL

The thought DID actually occur to me, as long as MD is good with me copying his thing. Maybe he'd want to do this.

Keep 'em coming then.

Thanks for the offer, I'll pass.  Once I reach the One Song to Rule Them ALL, I am done in the Bracket business.  But I will happily vote in yours.

I nominate any song by the band Bush.

LOL...yeah it does innit.

I already started. I think this is going to be a lot harder. MD kindly shared with me how he approached his lists, but for something like this, there's no Billboard 100 Top Worst Songs.

I'm probably going to have to make it a bit more generic and say "the top lamest songs of all time" and not necessarily the "worst" songs of all time. I can imagine how much crap gets released by "record labels" that are some tweaker in his garage thinking he's the next big rap mogul. We're probably going to have to go with mainstream songs that actually were released on a wide basis. So, you know, songs people (might have) heard of.

what would be at least a little funny is if one of your brackets was just a repeat of one of MD's brackets and you just pick the worst instead of the best...  :)

See, now, some of the songs y'all are posting, and ones I'm finding online, I kind of like.

But, I can't let that guide or decide things, unless I'm trying to pare down a list to 16 to start each year off. Or just because I feel like it, because, you know, my list and all.

Though thanks for letting the cat out of the bag, Brant - I had actually thought it would be hilarious to mimic one of MD's top 16 song-for-song just to see who was paying attention. ;D

This is part of the issue - there's songs some of y'all think suck and others love. But I'll figure it out. I'm sure whatever lists I come up with will piss someone (cough) up. :)

MD's brackets start in 1960 and go through the 90s. Not sure if he's planning on 2000s or not, but I've been doing a bit of research this afternoon and man I'd forgotten how much vile crap is out there. Stuff that might have been cool at the time and just does NOT stand the test of time...IMO anyway. And apparently in the opinion of many others because some years have a lot of lists.

It's damn near impossible to find 'bad' songs in the 1960s. But the 1970s? Check! 1980s? GOD YES. 1990s? Holy crap, need you ask? 2000s? It just gets worse the closer to the current day you get. :(

Yer going to have to narrow this down a bit.. there whole styles of music that could be eliminated from the universe and we'd be better off.... gangsta rap for starters..... :P
Any Boy band, any bubble gum group, any Yoko Ono crap, etc you get the idea.

It would be more interesting to see what people don't like in areas of music that we actually like. For instance I'm also a fan of PotUS, but really can't stand NiN...

I worked on a document for a few hours last night, dedicating one page to each year from 1960 to 2017. There is no lack of sources for lists out there for the 'worst' songs of particular years or decades. The 60s is somewhat more difficult to judge but there's a few very, very annoying songs I could call out (and that others apparently have issues with). Though, that's not entirely fair, to judge a genre of music using 20/20 vision from the current day.

But it's fun anyway, yeah? ;)

Some years, I'm going to have to cull my list to get it to 16. Others, I'm going to struggle to populate it with 16. I might catch sh*t from y'all for putting some mainstream songs from a year in 1960 on a list ("What? I loved that song, you suck"), but then again I expect to catch sh*t like MD did for his lists, so. :)

Plus I have a few aces up my sleeves, thanks to some of your suggestions. MUWAHAHAHAHA.  O:-)
