solo expansion for Silent War
Isn't that a combat expansion of sorts, for Silent War? It's already a solitaire game. :D
Amazon has new D&D manuals to be released next month. Don't play anymore, just stumbled over it as I surfed my drool at amazon.
So is Silent War sort of taking on what was done in The Hunters whereas you manage individual crew(s)...because isn't Silent War more of a wolf pack/large naval campaign type of game versus individual vessels? That's going to make for one long-ass game if that's the case!

Yes, but I hope this expansion will come with a new campaign setup for running only
one boat. I think it is. Perhaps that's what Brant meant by "solo"?
I had completely forgotten about the expansion. Seems like they've been working on it for awhile now. Judging by the components, such as the play mat above, it should have more detail than The Hunters (something I thought it lacked in the combat).

Night of Man! LOL! That was the one I was interested in. I already forgot how it looked. :2funny:
He used a square grid for Day of Heroes, which I somewhat understood because of the lay of the town in Mozambique but I don't understand the need for it with that terrain set. It makes movement and distances awkward at best.
Off-setting the squares would allow more movement options but would look screwy on the urban maps with grid street-plans.

A new company-level game by Mikugames, "Tornio'44" is going to be released in April and is now in pre-order. The game is about the largest battle (and one of the most forgotten ones in WW2) between Finland and Germany during the Lapland War 1944-1945.
Here's some beta action shots.

That looks awesome, Gary. What are you using?
Thanks! Just Photoshop (CS6). It's very "wedding cake" layered right now which I'll probably soften up a good bit. I don't want to lose the birds eye perspective of being able to easily distinguish the rolling hills though. Right now however they look like mountains and caverns. What I'll do is hand shade light/dark to sort of flatten out the layers a bit.
I actually took a PS class a few years back and did fairly well. I have no idea how to do what you've done, though. :'(
Photoshop is impressive - but first I thought you'd managed to cut that out of some kind of stryrofoam and had made it truly 3D.
As in 3d print an entire flat board game map?

That's what I thought I was looking at.
Gary is just really good with PS. O0
Where did you get the trees texture from? Was it a hi-res photo you masked/cut out sections from and then worked the edges or is it some kind of procedural generated texture? I didn't spot any repeats in the pattern.
Nah - anybody can spend a little time with PS and become good enough to come up with some pretty neat looking stuff. There's so many tools and filters and things that you can do; it's an amazing program. I self-taught myself PS a dozen years or so ago and it's just really relaxing for me. I can't paint worth a crap (miniatures) so this takes the place of it.
With this game, I took Dean Essig's original map for "None But Heroes":
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FNbH_Original.png&hash=04f6c7688c041632bc8cdd25d32446e507e59966)
And traced all of the contours and saved each onto it's own layer. I then "wedding caked" it (bevel, drop shadow, standard PS stuff that anybody can spot a mile away but still looks cool):
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FNbH_Contours.png&hash=ea425068e6823f66b2445ae09f44e01ced3af0c8)
And I wanted to make it look like the satellite view from Google Earth:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FAntietam_Creek.png&hash=485e8b306a66617efee966ee491a95e0b7261220)
While retaining the levels. I sampled the terrain that is there- the woods, the fields, and the water. I'll have to come up with something for the cornfields as they were not in season when Google Earth took their pics but they were during the battle. Anyways, I've come up with what I posted above:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FNBH_Miniatures3.png&hash=f0f4a309bfb0f7ebf1022e346a86c5412181f82e)
What I'd like to do is make a ZunTzu module for playing miniatures on it. I started to tinker with an early version of the map and just the counters from the NbH game:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FNBH_Miniatures.png&hash=5d95f3cbcf163abcaa3f6f06d694c9ffe4bf15b5)
I could even print it out and make a game mat out of it for actually playing with 10mm mini's. The scale is 1"=110yds.
That's all there is to it (so far)! :)
What's the least expensive (I.E. oldest) version of PS that still lets you use most of the macros and plugins and whatnot? I've tried using GIMP but I find that it is hard to learn to use. I also have a decade-or-more-old version of Paint Shop Pro somewhere but I'm sure that it has been left in the dust by PS by now.
I used Photoshop 7 for the longest time up until very recently. I had it tweaked out just the way that I liked it and it worked fine. I've since upgraded to CS6 which is still old but very functional (and faster than PS7). Do some Google-Fu but Adobe was giving away CS2 suite, which includes Illustrator, for free for a while (and may still be). There may be some gray area with that; I think technically you're supposed to have a license, but the download for it included a free license key so I dunno. I downloaded it back then and I used it when I transitioned from PS7 to CS6. Here's an old article about it: http://www.redmondpie.com/download-adobe-photoshop-cs2-for-free-legally-while-you-still-can/
Thanks again Gary! I've managed to D/L and install CS2 from your links. I'll have to explore it a bit more in the coming days.
Excellent! I'm glad that those are still available. CS2 is a solid version. I didn't notice too much difference between it and CS6 to be honest.
There's a gazillion Youtube video's on doing photoshop stuff. See if you can find some basic ones to begin with; ones that introduce the various tools that are available and what they do. Then explore the filters that are built in and then learn things like adding patterns, creating paths and working with brushes, including how to make your own. Once you have that stuff down, you'll be well on your way and can explore some advanced techniques. If you're like me, you'll first kinda fudge your way around and figure out how to do the things you want but eventually you'll learn that there is probably a much simpler way to achieve the same effect. You probably know this from PSP but layers are your friend. I put *everything* on its own layer, even strokes and fills in case I change my mind later- I can change the stroke or the fill without having to redraw the area that they apply to or worrying about what a change would do to the original area.
Oh, and Lynda.com has a bunch of free tutorials and 1000's more if you sign up: http://www.lynda.com/Photoshop-tutorials/279-0.html
TBH, working with properly layers is probably one of the first things I need to learn how to do. Even in PSP I had a hard time getting things to click. Lots of tutorials are just what the doctor ordered. O0
Between this and getting more into home 3D printing I should be busy all winter. :))

Remind me about getting a copy for review later on in 2016.
In the meantime, over at Tiny Battle Publications, Hermann's little SciFi game "invaders from Dimension X!" has reportedly already sold out its first print run, and the publisher has asked Hermann if he can come up with another game and/or expansion for it. The Hermannator in turn asked me to draw up some artwork that could be used for it. This time it will be giant buggy-things vs the marines. Here is a very Very first look at the cover art that may (or may not) be used.

The latest version of THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT map. I am hoping to get all the rest of the graphics (cards counters and cover art) done within a week.
is "Rome" just the label for the entire region? It just looks weird that far south...
Correct: its just a name of the region.
Alan at VPG asked me to redesign the graphics for the VPG game Empires in America. This is a simple graphics upgrade, no rules will be changed (although the expansion set for the game will now be included). Its a solitaire States of Siege game and so far I have having fun with the new graphics.
Love that game :)

I have been working this weekend on the EiA map. Here is part of it. Its a work in progress.
Empires in America Deluxe edition map done, box-art done, card-backs done, approx. 50 of the 75 cards done, and two of the counters designed. Phew! This is more work than I thought! Still, it should all be in place in the next two weeks or so.

Empires in America update:
The folks over at VPG have been obsessed with launching the "Nemo's War" kickstarter all this month, so Empires hasn't been given the amount of attention it needs to get printed.
The latest news would be a final graphic fix that Alan asked me to do over the Christmas break. He assures me that all the various game parts have now been sent off to the proofreaders. I *think* that is the final step before production. So, hopefully, we will see the game come out sometime in the next two weeks.
Looking forward to it - I love that game :)
I am slowly getting the map made up for a new game from Hermann Luttman. This will be for Legion Games and is a development of an earlier game Hermann did for White Dog Games on the same topic. Card driven and solitaire, but not a "States of Siege" game.
To those who are interested-
VPGs release of the deluxe version of Empires in America seems to be on hold while they go all-out on re-designing one of there flagship games: Darkest Night. I can't get a strait answer from Alan on when EiA is now going to be published. Oh well...
I'll still play it whenever it comes out! :)

Here is a little update on what VPG has me working on:
"High Treason: The Trial of Louis Riel" will be a card game where you are trying to win the most famous court case in the history of Canada. You use cards to place and move chits that determine how the jury will eventually vote. If it does well Alan is hoping to start a whole series of games on famous court cases. Not sure of a release date but Alan is pushing hard on this one. I have some test images worked up and the game is in playtesting. I will post the grahpics here.
"Battle for Moscow II" is a variation of Frank Chadwicks old Battle for Moscow game, with more chrome added. It will also serve as a introductory game to Franks new monster WWII game project which will cover the entire ETO. That particular monster I suspect is years away from publication, but may get a boost if this little game does well. I have not even started on the graphics for it so I have nothing to show you yet, but Alan wants it ready for Comsimworld Expo 2016 in June.
^Cool stuff, Tim!

Comming soon, from VPG...
Battle for Moscow II is based on the old GDW game Battle for Moscow. This was originally meant to be a intro level game when it was first published in the 80s. Since that time both VPG and GMT have published versions of it. Now, it will be used as an intro to a new series of games Frank Chadwick is designing for VPG that will cover (eventually) the entire 2nd World War in Europe. Its almost a completely new game with tons of awesome sauce added.

So far I have completed the front cover art, the two sides to the map, and the front of the counters. I sill have to make up the counter backs and the back of the cover. This game will be published via Tiny Battles.

The rondel for the East Indies is wrong. If peacetime it should have an orange circle in the middle, if wartime the whole thing should be an orange triangle, base up/apex down, with a black border. The one shown is for Czechoslovakia.

Larry Harris (creator of Axis & Allies and many other games) has recently announced his latest game: WAR ROOM
It will be published by Nightingale Games (a new startup) and have a Kickstarter in the Fall of 2017.
It's been 4 years in the making...
WAR ROOM is a massive, grand WWII simulation with secret, simultaneous movement, stacks of units on a round global map.

The old
Fleet series from VG were some of my favorite wargames back in the day. (2nd Fleet :smitten: )
So the great moistening began when I saw this upcoming one, at Compass Games, with a similar theme but wider scope.
Blue Water NavyQuoteBlue Water Navy covers the war at sea, air, close-ashore and low-earth orbit from the Kola Peninsula in Northern Russia to the Mediterranean Sea and West over the Atlantic Ocean to the United States and Cuba. The game models the full order of battle that could be expected in 1980's wartime, from multi-regiment Soviet Tu-22 Backfire bombers to multiple US carrier groups.
The game is card driven, with each card providing points to move units or trigger special events such as 'KGB Assassinations' and 'Space Shuttle'. There is also a reaction mechanic where most cards can be used in the other player's turn to perform a spoiling event such as 'Raid Aborts' and 'Friendly Fire'.

Gonna have to keep an eye on that one.

Don't be completely put off by what Cyrano had to say with the Age of Sail game. Though I completely believe what he had to say about the rules issues with that game, in my experience Compass usually does pretty good with QA of the rules. I don't own a ton of Compass games (I'm buying more from them these days since I own pretty much every GMT game I want) but my general impression is favorable. They did a nice job with Breaking the Chains - https://www.compassgames.com/out-of-print/breaking-the-chain.html (https://www.compassgames.com/out-of-print/breaking-the-chain.html)

+1
I read the comments from Cyrano and was wondering if we were talking about the same game. I have many Compass titles, and my experience with them has ranged from good to excellent. I will admit that sometimes you will see a problem with the rules, but these are hardly "sucking chest wounds."
I think you can find issues with the rules of almost any game company...including those from the 80s.
For example, I am starting to play Time of Crisis, by GMT. The rules don't explain some very fundamental concepts about card flow and hand management. But IMHO that does not suddenly make Time of Crisis a lesser product, nor do I think it reflects poor play testing. To me, it just means that I have to do what I usually do, get on BGG and ask questions.
If you have any questions about the quality of the Compass game rules for Sovereign of the Seas...the rules can be downloaded. The link is:

The mixture of NATO counters with equipment counters could also be momentarily confusing, even if only air units show equipment type.

It's coming from Italy I believe so it should be cheaper for you, no?
Oh, that's right, missed that didn't I. I'll definitively keep an eye on this one, then. Looks a tad pricey, but, looks absolutely class as well.
Heading back to their site to look for a rulebook preview...

A classic for sure :)
Just to point out, GMT's Red Storm: Air War Over Central Germany 1987, is $70, and it only covers the air war.
I do agree, they should have broken Under an Iron Sky up into 2 or 3 games to help people with a smaller budget.

Compass needs to have someone talk to their artist about counter design. I generally find their counter and maps to be lacking in the artistic appeal department.
^don't be a hater.
Just stating a fact. You want $80+ for a game at attempt to make it appealing.

They have some very nice looking games, imo. Bitter Woods is gorgeous.
Git off muh laun!
I like most of the counters Compass does. They may not be fancy, but they are clean, readable, look good and are not overloaded with info (an increasing failing of games these days). Same thing for the maps.
A number of their counters are gaudy, but I will grant you not all are bad.

Any particular games? Gawdy is not a word I would typically use for their counters, but I haven't played as many Compass games as I have GMT.

Maybe gaudy is an overstatement but ugly? Yes. One game has bright red background with a bright red Soviet flag just hard on the eyes to look at and read. Otherwise I just thing compared to GMT Compass counter are not as clean and nice to look at.
To each his own, I suppose. I like the counters for BoP (once properly trimmed).

Cool. That's two games on the same subject at roughly the same scale. I have Reluctant Enemies and it's really good. It's always interesting to see how equivalent games handle things differently.
