I think Jarhead did.  I recall a lot of chatter about it being ridiculously hard and many people quit in frustration before even being able to successfully complete the first mission.

I think I can honestly say I've never played a game set in the Vietnam War.

Try Conflict in Vietnam on an emulator and take it from there.

Ridiculously hard eh...*sigh*

Sadly, this is a horribly under-represented war for wargaming.

My favorite game set in the Vietnam war is Strike Fighters 2 with the Green Hell mod.

There is a Vietnam mod for ARMA2, probably the same one linked above, that you can grab and read more about at PMC:  http://tactical.nekromantix.com/vte/index.php

I've screwed around with it some and it's fun if you like ARMA2, although it's a bit rough around the edges.  I asked Snakeman (the moderator) about getting his mod picked up by Planned Assault but I don't think he did so.  Too bad, because it would really increase the playability of the mod.

Unfortunately, boardgaming is where it's at if you want to really game Vietnam.

there was a pretty damn decent Vietnam mod for CC3.  full up on infantry SOG groups vs VC fire fight sound effects were great for their day.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

HPS has three of the Tiller Squad Battles games in the time period you're interested in: Vietnam, Tour of Duty and Dien Bien Phu.  I've not played either of those two but have played other games in this series.  Their pretty nice if you want turn-based small unit tactics games. They also carry the Tiller game War Over Vietnam in his Modern Air Power series.

Pat Proctor's Air Assault Task Force contains some Vietnam scenarios, primarily focused on (surprise) Air Cav and Air Assault actions.  These are graphically minimal and very grog-oriented games, but again very nice if you're interested in that.  There is less minutiae management in these than in the Squad Battles games.  The emphasis is on sound tactics.  You're really in the role of Battalion/Brigade commander in these.  Shrapnel carries these.

What we REALLY need is an operational level computer game covering the entire war on the same scale as Victory games Vietnam board game from the early 80's. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5620/vietnam-1965-1975. Unfortunately I'm not thrilled with the modded scenario for Advanced Tactics: Gold which set out to do just that.

There are a couple TOAW3 scenarios that use the old VG game as a basis.  I believe some are included with the base game.

Of course, the mechanics aren't the same.

Edit:  I own HPS Tour of Duty and it's a pretty good Squad Battles game with a wider variety of forces than the original.  I specifically recall some Aussie scenarios along with a handful of riverine scenarios, hot airmobile LZs, etc.

El Justo's "The Vietnam War Deluxe ~ 1965-1975" for Civilization 3: Conquests.  I know C3C is an old game but this scenario is the best I've ever played covering the Vietnam War.

That looks pretty impressive for a mod.

The HPS Dien Bien Phu game sounds perfect....will check it out. Thanks all for the above.

I know that you're probably looking for a PC game covering the conflict so that you can play vs the AI but there's some excellent boardgames covering the conflict and they are solitaire friendly and of course a blast to play vs another human.  Each of these have VASSAL modules and so could be played online live or via email or just solitaire on your computer.

1. VG's Vietnam (already mentioned): An incredible simulation of the entire war.  It covers everything you'd want and then some but it's also long and fairly complex though there are shorter scenarios.  Obtaining a physical copy of the game is fairly easy though not as cheap lately as it used to be.  Looks like this one is making a comeback with the high prices.  There's a vassal module for it with a number of people signed up as players.

2. Victory in Vietnam II (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6721/victory-in-vietnam): This is the "micro" version of VG's Vietnam but a great game in it's own right.  This would be my choice for playing on vassal (there is a module).  Obtaining a copy is a bit difficult (I was lucky to of gotten mine) but the rules are available on the Geek so you could give it a "test run" on vassal.

3. Hearts and Minds (recently funded for a reprint: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1227780190/hearts-and-minds-reprint?ref=search):  I don't have any experience with this game but it looks like it would be a good pbem game.

4. Lock-n-Load Forgotten Heroes (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6542/lock-n-load-forgotten-heroes-vietnam): Tactical Vietnam.  I have very little experience with this gaming system but it has a very large following and lots of electronic play-aids (vassal, etc).  Matrix Games has been working on a PC conversion of it for the last 50 years (literally).  Check the tabletop AAR's section here to get a good idea on how the game plays.

Fields of Fire (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22877/fields-of-fire): I have the reprint on P500 and can't wait to give it a try.  I hear that this game is the ultimate in tactical realism but it is also a bear to learn (reprint is going to clean up the rules they say).  A vassal module is available.  Check out the video section on that Geek link to see how this one plays.

And there's dozens more Vietnam war boardgames if you search the Geek: http://tinyurl.com/o7geasd

Again, I realize that you're looking for a PC game but boardgaming has this topic covered much more vastly.
