I know JD is from Scotland, but doesn't live there now. And Bawb is close, but not actually in Scotland
Any of y'all live there?
I wish!
Me too :(
Did you say 'Scotland' or 'Scotch-Land'? Cause I got a Visitor's Visa for the latter.
Same
I was going to say Asid, but then I remembered...him no post here anymo!
I think maybe Father Ted is north of the border?
Who here likes sheep. REALLY likes the. That could be the give-away. ::)

There was this Seaman in Deck Division while at the Holy Loch. After that we were known as Boooooooooooat Ops spoken in the very best Billy Goat Gruff voice that you could muster. It was totally embarrassing., and yet hilarious! :DD
Did the sheep follow him every where he went or run from him?

You know you're getting your Welsh and Scottish mixed up, right? ;)
While we're talking about Scotland, I had a question for JD.
I'm re-reading Nigel Tranter's Bruce Trilogy again. I just finished the part where Bruce slays the Red Comyn in the church. In Tranter's version, Comyn strikes Bruce and insults him and his wife, and Bruce - in a rage like temporary insanity - pulls his dirk and stabs Comyn in the chest.
However, I read another book about Bruce, written from the first person perspective of Sir James Douglas, and in that version Comyn attacks Bruce and essentially impales himself on the dirk.
What's the official Scottish stance on this? ???
I like toast. :2funny:
Sorry - I have no idea. When I was at school we weren't taught Scottish history...we were taught British history. All I know (which is very little) has come from various readings and discussions over the years.
I should read more about Scottish history, but I was all wrapped up in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, The Falklands and the Cold War and I'm a very slooooooooooooow reader. A 300 page book will typically take me 6 months to read :-[
What little I do know of The Bruce (from various things picked up over the years) is that he was generally considered quite a ruthless bastard. So it's entirely possible Comyn was lured for murder to be comitted
I'm very impressed you are reading about Scotland though O0

He wasn't a Boatswain so no pied piper thing going on. lol I think he would sneak up on them at night when he could blend in. ;)
And here all this time I thought wool chafed too badly.
I was about to totally roll in on you JD, until I realized I've never read a complete and total accounting of the U.S. revolutionary war.
You get a reluctant pass.
There's a Scottish guy in the 160th
There are few things that give me more joy than when he yells OH FER F_;@+! SEHK when I teamkill him

lol - I have even read a couple of books on the Civil War...I've just never been drawn towards British or Scottish history much. Perhaps because there's so much history and I'd never be able to read it all ;D
I've got a history of Scotland on my Kindle - but this bugger literally does the HISTORY of Scotland. I mean, he goes back to the bloody formation of the planet, of the British Isles, glacierization/formation of mountains, migration of people across Doggerland, and on and on. It took me forever just to get to the 1200s. Admittedly I haven't read it since my last flight to Glasgow more than a year ago. :-\

I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - that you've left something unfinished!
(says the guy that's had Orange Crush on the drawing board for over 10 years now)
Which book is that BC? 'cos my sister got me a book once and I started reading it and it was exactly as you described and really very boring for it. Also the section on William Wallace wasn't even a chapter yet it was very detailed on religion, Picts etc. Not even much on the Romans iirc.
Very boring book and did not get finished.
Being shamed into it, I'm now scouring Amazon Kindle for a decent book on Scottish history. I may focus on the particular time period I'm interested in - circa 1200s and beyond.
Brant, If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were getting at poor 'ol BC.
This is a damn good read and includes a lot of stuff on Scottish history, albeit a fairly specific time period.

I'm assuming I jumped into where you were pointing at ;D

Wish I could recall, JD. Tried to look it up through my Amazon account but cannot locate it. Next time I'm on my Paperwhite (probably later tonight), I'll check and see. None of the history of Scotland books are ringing a bell in a Kindle search.
It's fairly dry reading, but in its own way somewhat interesting. I really did not expect him to start millions of years ago. But yeah, me not going back to it speaks volumes as to how interesting it was, ultimately.
I think I got to the portion about William Wallace and found it unimpressive. That's about where I left off. Probably the same book.

Must be one of those books from the Islay regions.
The Tranter Bruce Trilogy is pretty good. Why not just start there?
Done - and his Wallace book
Thanks for the tip - I also now have it on my wish list :)
I've got The Wallace, but I haven't read it yet. I want to finish The Bruce Trilogy one more time and then I'm going to read Wallace.
He also has a Stewart Trilogy which I have in hardback. I didn't like it nearly as much as Bruce, though.
The Wallace is only 0.99 on Amazon for Kindle, so I'll grab it - thanks for the recommend.

Is it this one?

The book starts with an intro to "modern" Scotland and Chapter 2 then kicks off with the title "After the Ice Age"
The part on Wallace starts on page 82 with a 2 and a bit pages.
It's a 384 page book. But it's more of a brief description of Scottish History than anything really in-depth. To be fair to it, it's the "History or a Nation"...it's either going to be bloody thick (1000+ pages) and fairly detailed or thinner (400 pages) and a sweep through.
