So seeing solops post for Epidemic on Gus's Plague Inc thread I was wondering what games people would like to see modernized. There are of new games / imaginings that get close but don't have the feel of it.
A personal couple of favorites are:
The Roadwar series (Roadwar 2000, Roadwar Europa) - imagine a mashup of the internal politics of CKII with a Mad Max vibe and a open world / world conquering of say Mount and Blade.
Autoduel / Car Wars - I guess Convoy kinda has the feel of it but it is more roguelike rather than open world.
The old EA / Interplay RPG's (Bards Tale, Wasteland, Legacy of the Ancients, The Mars Saga, Dragon Wars) - I mean I guess this style / type of game has faded into obscurity but dammit sometimes I don't want to learn 20 different systems for a game...just give me something I can sit down and play.
Red Storm Rising - Proof positive that you can build a great game with minimal graphics (didn't even need the weapon animations) as long as the UI affords enough feedback to the user. I wish devs would learn this lesson better...although the deluge of indie titles has helped.
Anyway - there's my relative shortlist.
Imperialism! Starflight! Alpha Centauri! Birth of the Federation! There's a ton more if I really try and think about it. :D
[edit]Soldiers at War!
^I have very similar tastes to you jamus and would to see any of those you mentioned redone.
I was thinking about this a few days ago while playing Metal Gear Solid V and how it felt, to me, like a redone Airborne Ranger on steroids.
Steel Panthers! O0
Age of Rifles.
(Unfortunately, as someone reported years ago, the code has been lost).
Knights of the Old Republic - not as a stupid MMORPG.

Oh yeah completely forgot the old Microprose games...A show of hands how many people accidently lit off a law rocket too close to a bunker and got blower up?
Gunship and F19 stealth fighter were also goodies
There's the new sub game that's supposed to be the new red storm rising
As above age of rifles, steel panthers, DRAGON force, sword of aragon
Emperor of the Fading Suns
Terra Nova
M1 Tank Platoon 2
Gunship 2000
All of the Jane's titles
...Paradroid.....
Lords of midnight using the total war system
Tie Fighter
X-Wing
Age of Rifles
I'd pretty much be set with those.
Star defence from the Vic 20
Incubation.
Avlon Hill's Gulf Strike was ported to the computer, had it on my old Atari. Would love to see it modernized and on the PC.
Emperor of the Fading Suns and Age of Rifles are good suggestions. O0
Steel Panthers
The 1990s FPS adaptation of Space Hulk including Vengeance of the Blood Angels (which upgraded the gfx very nicely, but tanked the user interface into the Eye of Terror.)
The new Deathwing game doesn't count -- it's a L4D co-op shooter. That's fine, but not the genius board game adaptation into FPS rules of the Electronic Arts game. I still pull out the PC version on DosBox (it needs an older version though to work right). Gameplay still holds up. It nailed the "lieutenant in the APC watching the marines vs the aliens" vibe from Cameron's Aliens exactly, which is what the board game itself was aiming for.
SSI's adaptation of The War of the Lance boardgame could use a major presentation update.
Syndicate...Satellite Reign failed to deliver overall.
System Shock
WH 40K: Chaos Gate
For that matter, the D&D wargame Red Arrow, Black Shield -- verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy loosely adapted by SSI into Fantasy Empires. I don't care for a remake of that (though Bro and I played it a lot), but a proper port of RABS would be nice.
JH, I'm pretty sure System Shock 1 is indeed being remade/updated!
Don't let that finger of the monkey paw go to waste!
A couple of you guys mentioned Red Storm Rising. I can't wait to see how that reboot turns out.
Also concur with Jarhead about many of the Janes titles.
Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and its sequel.

Hidden and Dangerous
Panzer Elite
B17 Flying Fortress - The Mighty Eighth
Dangerous Waters/Sub Command
Starfleet Command III
KOTOR (seconded)
Tie Fighter (also seconded :) )
101st Airborne in Normandy
Freedom Force Irrational Games
Microsoft Combat FS2 Pacific Theater
Silent Storm
Second B17 Mighty 8th. Always thought that it would be a great update

I never got to play Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe the first time :(
Ooh and a a new War of the Lance as mentioned above would be The Money!
Star Wars: Jedi Academy and a proper Battlefront.
As others said: Age of Rifles, Imperialism 2, Steel Panthers, Emperors of the Fading Suns
How about M.A.X.?
I'm going to take some flack for this one...
Mail Order Monsters >:D
Also a good portion of the Epyx catalog: Impossible Mission, Summer Games / Winter Games, Street Sports series...
Oooooh...B-17 the Mighty Eighth...good call Hartford688!
I was depressed for a while when Epyx went out of business. I even had one of their joysticks for my Amiga in the early 90s, it was awesome.

I love their joystick....except for the fact that I'm lefty. Surprisingly though I could still use it somewhat comfortably.
SSI's Kampgruppe and their Napoleon game-- Battles of Napoleon I think. I would buy Red Storm Rising again for sure and I don't think it would be possible to re-make Planescape Torment and do the original justice. It would be like a photogragh of the Mona Lisa. My 2 cents. :-X
Ah... Epyx! The very first game I ever had for my C-64 was Temple of Apshai, but only because they hadn't released a port for the far superior Hellfire Warrior.
But if I had to pick one title to remake... Am I the only one on this board that remembers the PC-game adaptation of the FASA board game Renegade: Legion Interceptor?
The PC remake has the same title, and to this day has one of the best wargamey damage resolution systems for a turn-based fighter game.
Atomic Games/360 Games V for Victory series. Some of the best wargames on the PC.

There are a few games:
- Star Trek: Birth of the Federation
- Caesar II
- Civil War: Generals
- Knights of Honor
- Lords of the Realm 2
- Imperium Romanum
- Celtic Kings: Punic Wars
- Conquest Frontier War
- Spartan/Gates of Troy
- Imperium Galactica
Rocket Jockey had a ton of things that, I think, would translate well to today: brutal action, rockets, and grappling hooks. Throw in color / rocket customization, larger arena maps, even more rockabilly music (i.e. Rev. Horton Heat) in the background and couple it with a sizeable online group and just watch the money come flowing in.
Did you just reference The Reverend Horton Heat? I love you.
Enemy Engaged – Comanche vs. Hokum (EECH)
Anguille, yep Spart/GoT, Legion, Chariots of War... I think the most recent version of the basic system is Egypt: Engineering an Empire (riding the coattails of the History Channel show), and for a game based entirely around their combat system Great Battles Medieval (also tied to the History Channel) which became Matrix's first big hit on mobile devices. They took out the older Real-Time battle resolutions for E:EaE, though, and put in a turn-based tactical.
As I read all the way through this list I couldn't help but wondering how many of you were pounding on your keyboards/monitors and screaming "damn you machine, make me feel young again. Make me feel as I did THAT DAY!"
Trying to imagine a publisher even considering a reboot of M1 or Stealth Fighter as they were. The simmers would holler holy hell and the shooter-boyz would turn away very quickly, especially with the latter.
"System Shock" would be met with howls of: what, no MP?!!
AoR and my beloved BoN, hah...
With the world gone console, I feel blessed to have what we do: CMx2, JTS, On Target, Civ, and then the occasional cross-over that doesn't make me want to hurt myself.
A few that have been passed over do surprise me, though. Mail Order Monsters could be translated into a graphic-rich experience that I think would be a lot of fun. Even if my memories are of playing it with an Atari 2600 joystick.
Seven Cities of Gold

That's kinda why I put the caveat that for some of those games the ship has sailed so to speak.
For me though UI and a general fun factor will trump graphics every time. Look at my steam playlist... There's a lot of non graphically intense games on there and up high in playtime

Hmm, not what I was thinking of, but still: http://www.mulereturns.com/ for iOS and Android.
I'm probably thinking of either Offworld Trading Company (which features MULEs but probably isn't really the same game), or SpaceHORSE by Shrapnel.
I'd like to see hi-res versions of Uncommon Valor and Forge of Freedom.
But my favorite for modernization would be Great Naval Battles 2:Guadalcanal

Swat 4
Literally the only thing it needs to make it modern and popular is iron sights, server browser, UI updates and some other kittl bits and bobs.

On topic: Fields of Glory?
Actually (though perhaps this should be a separate thread) I think we have to define the parameters of re-making and updating. For instance, two games that I played a lot of in the beginning of my PC gaming are Sim City 2000 and Doom. Both have modern iterations with better graphics, better controls, etc, and essentially similar gameplay but I'm not really sold on them. They're the same but different - the improvements have changed the nature of the game.
So, for instance, what would a remade/updated "B17" look like? TIR support? Clickable pits? MP? Things I think a lot of players would desire, but would it then become a whole new game?
Red Baron (3d) with all the dynamic campaigning.

Just re-doing Fighting Steel would probably fit the bill - especially for the pre-dreadnought/dreadnought era.
Flight Commander 2.
Planescape: Torment's "spiritual successor", "Tides of Numenra" is already available for pre-order. It was developed by the same team.
Regarding PS:T, I would be happy with the kind of "modernisation" they did to Baldur's Gate I & II.
