Title: Dogs
Post by: airboy on January 01, 2018, 01:41:07 PM
On New Years Day it is nice to think about the blessings we have in addition to the blessings we hope for in the New Year.

I'm blessed with Dogs.

Dogs are wonderful creatures.  They love you all of the time and their tails demonstrate their affection.  They like to walk which gives us a good excuse to go outside, get some exercise, and show our furry friends a good time.

They guard our homes (sometimes excessively so against cats and squirrels), but they often warn us of potential real threats (other people, fire, and cats).

We have two very elderly dogs - ages 14 and probably 17.  They don't have the energy they used to.  One does not have any hearing, is almost blind and is incontinent.  But they are still delighted to see us every morning.

Wrigley is the schnauzer mongrel.  Zippo is the cavalier/pomeranian mongrel.  Both were rescue dogs.

Zippo was a difficult to place dog because he was an adult who had been abused (someone hurt one of his eyes and threw acid on him or set his leg on fire).  Zippo bit everyone in the shelter.  But once Zippo trusted us he has been a wonderful dog.  Only took him a couple of days to trust me and less than a day to trust my wife.  Never was able to trust Zippo around children which is sad.

We have one dog, a 17-year-old Shih-Tzu, who is both blind and deaf. But she has lived here since she was weaned, so she gets around fairly well.

Prior to losing her eyesight and hearing, she was just as you described dogs being. Despite her advanced age and declining health, she means a lot to us.

Thanks for posting. O0

Dogs are indeed something to be grateful for.  It's good to be reminded of that.  Thanks airboy

Totally agree.  One of the great boons of life is a devoted dog.

If I could only be half the person they think I am.

Wife is crazy for Shetland Sheep dogs. She had one in her formative years that she still talks about today.

In 2014, in addition to her going full-time student, quitting full-time work and some other things, she begins working with a Sheltie rescue program.

Fostering dogs, as we have discovered, is not easy - moreso for the fact that we seem to adopt the ones we are asked to watch. So now we've got 4 Shelties running about and it's okay.  The real issue seems to be how many older dogs become abandoned or released to the system. All the ones we've gotten are easily in the 10 year old and up range.

Fantastic animals.  They really make a place feel like a home, if that makes sense.

I have always appreciated my dog.  My ex got him for me just before she left me.  He has been a constant and boon companion.  Attentive to all my quirks and what nots.  He'll be ten this April Fools day.  He's still in great shape.  He waits for me outside while I am at work and insists we throw the ball when I get home.  I have had dogs my whole life, but, this one is the best by far.  God bless our furry four foots!

Great looking dogs Airboy. I bet they are a lot of fun and if they could talk, would thank you and your wife all day long for giving them the home and love they have. The wife and I just spent our Saturday night out together shopping for a dog sweater for her daughter's Pit and Ridgeback mix who doesn't like the cold but is too big to come inside much. I felt kind of stupid doing it but the thought of the thing outside in the cool weather really bugged me so we came to a joint agreement on style and color that, "Harley" would look good in and picked it up anyway. Later, she licked the back of my hand in appreciation, the dog not my wife.

I've got a big dog.  He used to hate riding in the car.  In the last 18 months or so, he's changed his mind.  He's still not crazy about it, but, he'll voluntarily get in now and stay quiet.

MD - our first dog would get car sick. When we would take him to the vet my wife would drive and i would be in the back seat with him holding a plastic bag. I was waiting for someone at a light to look over so I could be like "guy just can't hold his liquor"

Re: carsick dogs

Years ago, took the family down to Charleston for the weekend to celebrate a relative's birthday.  Took the pup as well, but knowing she gets carsick, we went to the vet beforehand to get doggie drammamine (sp?) that had to be used on an empty stomach.  Trip down, no problem.  On the way back home, we went to the party and expressly told everyone to NOT feed the dog but something got ingested at some point.  Fast forward an hour into a four hour drive and dog starts to lose everything from both ends...onto the horrified children in the back who were strapped into their car seats and couldn't scramble away from the ensuing mess.

Yeah.  That trip sucked.  Horribly.

Suffice to say, I've never taken a dog anywhere else not ten to twenty minutes from my house since then.

This old guy is Roscoe. He's a Beagle/Basset mix. I get worried about him more with each passing week as he's got to be pushing 12 and that tends to be the high end of lifespan for a Basset. I've had him since 2009 or so and he was about 2-3 years old then, so... :( This morning he wouldn't come out of his kennel to go outside to take care of business. He does that occasionally but he seemed awfully lethargic this morning. I'm hoping he's just feeling like an old boy this morning and it's nothing else.

He loves to howl and can be a barker if he sees someone walking by the house, but he tends to start with low-key growling and work his way up instead of going right into a frenzy of noise.

This brat is Lola. She's a Pit Bull. I'm not sure if she's a mix or not; looking at her here you can't really see the Pit in her, but from straight on it's readily apparent. She is a BARKER and often will go from 0 to 90 in 0.0000025 seconds if she hears the vaguest noise outside. Talk about a better security alarm than ADT. She's also VERY protective of me and the kids.

BC both your dogs are adorable. I gotta post a pic of Clyde in here, you guys will love him.

AFAIK car sickness is very common in dogs, but we have been fortunate to have two non carsick dogs.

Our first one, the Rottie, we were warned by the breeder that during the ride home he may get sick. He sat in my sister's lap for an hour (he was 3 months old and about 11 pounds) and just smiled the whole time.

I looked over at him and said 'Wow, he's a trooper.' And thusly he was named :)

BanziCat - I understand your worry.  Zippo is probably 17 and has to wear a diaper due to incontinence.  Wrigley is 14.  We can see them decline every month.

Wow, airboy. That's a pretty long life for a dog. No doubt a full and awesome one, too.

I will always feel incredibly guilty because the last time I put down a dog, it was about 2002 or so. I was so upset I couldn't be in the same room with him when they did it. I won't do that again, no matter how hard it is.

Our first dog (Snort) lived to be 17.  She had a dog stroke and nothing would get her to wag her tail.  She walked in a circle hitting her head on the wall.  I gave my wife a weekend to get Snort to wag her tail.  She wagged more than any dog we have ever had - until the stroke.  It was very sad, but we petted her when the vet came to our house to put her down.  Very, very sad - but it was the best thing for Snort.

That's about where we are at with our 17-year-old Shih Tzu named Ginger. After her seizure in May and stroke last summer, the vet didn't hold out much hope for her since she had so many health problems and wouldn't eat. But I fed her a little dish of vanilla ice cream and that got her back to eating again, which may have been a mistake. But I couldn't stand to see her starve herself to death. Since then she has had a urinary tract infection that she recovered from. Currently we are doctoring both her ears due to inner ear infections. Despite all that, neither of us could put her down because Ginger doesn't want to leave us. We knew when our last dog was ready to go. But she suffered through her last night and died the next morning before we could take her to the vet to have her put down. I hope Ginger does the same.

Same. I think about my big guy at least once a day. But for us getting another dog (same breed but female) has been very cathartic and Siggi has become an integral part of our pack. So much so that I find myself already dreading the years of her eventual decline. Big dogs big hearts but short lives is so true. I read that we see our own mortality and the best of ourselves in our old dogs which is why it resonates so much with us when they age past their prime.

We've decided we aren't going to get another dog after Ginger is gone. We are getting too old. In the first place we would have to drive to another town to get it groomed. In the second place we are both past 70 now and if the dog were to outlive us, we wouldn't be around to be sure it was treated well. At least that's how it looks to us now. We would miss having a dog around. I remember how quiet it was when our last dog died--we couldn't stand it. So there exists the possibility that we may change our minds and get another dog when the time comes. :-\

I miss my pugs every day. I wouldn't let the vet bury them. Instead I brought all of them home and put them together in a little Pug Cemetery in the side yard with a little, "Pug On Guard" sign over them. It's been over 4 years since the last one left me.  :'(  R.I.P. Little Ones.

I will mention it to my better half, but I don't think we could go through watching another dog aging and then dying. We are having a hard time of it right now with our 17-year-old Shih Tzu. We never had any children and our dogs have possibly meant as much to us as children do to their parents. But I appreciate your suggestion. Under other circumstances it would have been a great idea.

Edit: Adopting an older dog would still require trips to another town to get it groomed and this is something we just don't wish to do anymore. Although we are still competent drivers, age has taken its toll and we don't like driving in inclement weather or the heavier traffic of a town of more than 35,000 when we are accustomed to driving in a town of less than 2,000.

We've had some foster rescue danes off and on over the past few years.  We've had a total of 4 come thru here, not counting the occasional overnight stay for one of them in transit from place to place.

Tougher to do these days b/c Dexter is getting a little too ornery and overprotective of "his" turf.

The largest municipality near me has a population of about 500,000 and its city limits are about twenty-five miles from me. I have to drive there occasionally simply because there are some goods and services unavailable anywhere else in my area. But I don't like it!

The worst city I ever drove in was Boston, over 30 years ago. Traffic was horrible then and I wouldn't even attempt it now. Even 30 years ago I did not drive through New York City--I saw the Statue of Liberty from the other side of the harbor.

But my hat's off to those in this thread who have provided foster homes for dogs. I have always liked dogs. During one phase of my life I was the kennel master for a large metropolitan police department.

At that time the only breed used in my unit were German Shepherds. If anyone wants a good full grown German Shepherd, they might check with their law enforcement's canine unit. Sometimes dogs would fail the training course and be given away. At least that's what used to happen 40 years ago. Things have changed so much in this country since then that current policy may not permit dogs to be given away.

Police Kennel Master - the absolutely perfect sounding career.

I have always wanted a German Shepherd but hip problems, etc., scared me away.

Of course no one warned me about the high counts of bone cancer in Rottweilers and that is what ours succumbed to 😓

When my mom and I moved out of my grandparents' place in VA to go to TX, my grandparents moved to an apartment in Silver Spring that didn't allow dogs. So we had to give our GS away to an Air Force master sergeant. At least he had a good home for his later years. Always wanted another one.

Years ago someone actually dropped-off a pug at my house. Don't know who they were, I never spoke to them. The dog just came wandering up to the house and started making himself at home with my pugs. I asked all over but nobody knew who he was or where he came from. The only thing I could think of was somebody didn't want him and knew I had pugs but why not just come to me and ask if I would take the dog? At that time there was a lot of animal theft going on around and maybe it was connected somehow, how do you 'fence' a pug? Anyway we found him a good home no problem so Happy Ending.

Step-father has two pugs and the kids love them (I'm kind of fond of them myself, but one of those almost always takes a dump in our bedroom right before they leave if he brings them over to our house and I'm fairly certain I know which one).  I'm jonesing for a French Bulldog, to be honest.

Crazy about them dropping off a dog like that but glad it turned out alright.

We had to put down my daughter's 14 year old border collie this week.

She had developed cancer on the spleen and liver.

Man, it was rough. I can hear about humans dying all day long and I feel bad but it is nothing to compare to my feelings when a pet dies. I don't know what that says about me.

RIP Domino.

I gotta go. Something in my eye...

IIRC he didn't die in Alien, and he lived through the first part of Aliens, to be left behind and never referenced again.

Not sure if he was in Alien3, but that movie doesn't count anyway, so.

Ripley left him on Earth when she went back to LV-426 in Aliens. So I'm assuming he lived a long, happy life. Good kitty.

Of course he has a wiki page

http://alienanthology.wikia.com/wiki/Jonesy (http://alienanthology.wikia.com/wiki/Jonesy)

This is a cool bit of trivia:
Quote
During the scene when the Alien descended down to Brett from behind, to get Jonesy to react fearfully to the descending Alien a German Shepherd was placed in front of Jonesy so it would react fearfully to the descending Alien. A screen was placed between the two, so the cat wouldn't see it at first, and came over. The screen was then suddenly removed to make Jonesy stop, and start hissing.

I think I remember hearing something about that years ago...that's pretty cool trivia and ingenious to get the cat to react the way it did.
