I'll look but damn I have most of the stuff I'm interested in already. I have been looking at Frank Hunters games the past couple of years so maybe this year I'll jump.
I plan to purchase Commander: The Great War at least.
Yep, I don't really have a lot of wants so not sure I'll pick up much, if anything....only things thinking about is getting CMANO DLC to complete my collection and MAYBE Eagle Day Bombing.....

Being kind of a horrible person, I am of course going to wait until I can stack it with my yearly loyalty discount. :smitten:
I enjoyed getting my arse handed to me by the AI and PBEM in Commander: The Great War. Would love to see expansions for it but doesn't look like there will be any.

If you can't get on the Matrix site (I can't), most of what's on sale is on sale on Steam as well and easily viewed.
In previous years, the sale info was in a PDF you could download. During the one time I could view the links, there didn't seem to be any pdf this time. Major headache for their servers.

Havent successfully got into the links at all...however, you can go directly to the store, but I really did like the previous year's PDF to see everything in one spot. At least all their issues are keeping me from spending money, which I probably would have on something:)

Looking at Commander: Napoleon at War for PBEM. Can anybody with recent experience tell me if the game runs on Win10, has widescreen resolution 1920x1080, and any game breaking bugs. I'm enjoying Commander the Great War PBEM so hoping this is a similar experience.

I kind of recommend skipping ahead to his Part 2 once you've watched the "turn" flow for a while. He doesn't talk about game mechanics much in this video.
Anyone playing War Plan Orange still? For 10.00 I am very tempted.
Haven't played it in a long time, but it's a lot of interesting gameplay for $10.
I have not played it in many years and recently thought about getting back into it. Just like WitP:AE however, I doubt I previously made it past a few turns.
I've no idea where my disk even is and I'm tempted to just buy it again on the basis that paying $10 again is a better value than wasting an hour or two of my precious free time going through storage boxes.
You can buy a new boxed copy for 20.00.
Maybe. :-\
Tomorrow, If I don't find it after looking in the first three boxes I might rebuy.
I am deciding now on War Plan Orange or a crapload of dlc for Order of Battle.
WPO is certainly a much different experience than most of the OoB DLC. Also, it features more distinct types of warfare!
What you really need is someone to play PBEM with you... ^-^
Are you hitting on me?
If so, you can deflect with a graceful decline.
I thought about adding "Not a euphamism!" But this seemed funnier. >:D

Funny like, "I could have bought Tiger Leader with its update for $35, and I freaking waited too long!" :2funny:
That doesn't sound funny at all :/
It made me laugh.
But you're twisted. We all know that.
Guilty as charged.

I'm working my way through Germany at War, but I do want to hop on oob at some point.
I got the Morning Sun campaign (1930s Sino Japanese War), I got the Panzerkrieg campaign (Eastern Front, ~1943), and then I went back to pick up Winter War (Soviet Invasion of Finland, 1939).
Originally I felt Order of Battle (original game) was a bit too scripted but the rare conflicts portrayed in the above made me come back and overlook scripting, if it is still an issue.

Order of Battle? Yes.
No I meant "Germany At War". It's supposed to be a very detailed Barbarossa game.
How is Germany at War?
^Somehow that one slipped my notice, even though Jim Cobb reviewed it for us in 2013. PG with more complexity sounds great to me. Purchased.

...I mean, not that it matters I guess, I've already got it (and its predecessor).
Not many PG successors deign to use NATO symbols. And the map zooms in for a 3Dish view. Scale is uniformly maintained across the huge campaign, or the four huge campaigns rather. In that sense it's rather like the full
Unity of Command game, but at much smaller scales (1 Turn always equals 1 day; 1 hex always equals 1 km), and at a much more granular level of upgrade (similar to many other modern PG heirs).
In some ways it looks like a much more accessible War in the East (or the main campaign does).
I hate you.

How is Germany at War?
I find it strikes a great balance in complexity. It's one of those easy to learn hard to master games. It adds just enough complexity to the Panzer General/Corps formula for me to like it. Also the interface is well explained in the manual and pretty much every number/symbol you see in the game will pull a tooltip up when you mouse over it, so there's no scratching your head and constantly digging through the manual trying to remember what a squiggle represents.
The supply system adds more depth than say Panzer general/corps. You have to account not only for manpower, but ammo and fuel also must be supplied taking away from your resource points. Yes your tanks can shoot across that map, but do you have the resources to replenish their fuel after that advance? I bamboozled a scenario by forgetting to rearm my aircraft and ended up with multiple turns of not being able to make use of aircraft until I got them rearmed.
The graphics are decent enough, and there's the usual marching sounds and gunfire effects. You can also switch between NATO counters and sprites/polygons whatever they are.
As a note, I've mostly played some of the easier intro scenarios, so I'll reserve judgment on the AI's ability until I get into a more serious one. It does seem capable though, as during one scenario it was clear I as going to overrun the AI's positions so it attempted to quickly withdraw its forces and establish a new line.
I also believe the dev still updates the game and has some patch in the pipeline currently.
I...may have to get this. Now I'm a gaming slut too.

Fair warning, I'm a bad influence :D
You should absolutely buy it!
The game is more than moving men and machinery around, you have to also manage your relations with officers below and above you.
Piss off the guy in charge of trains? Your siege artillery gets delayed in relocating. The guy in charge of trucks love you? You're units stay better supplied. Piss of Hitler? Now your decisions cost more points. Those are just a few of the multiple relationships you have to be aware of.
Another point worth mentioning is the excellent manual and in game tutorials. The documentation in the manual and within the game put other games to shame. The in game help features narration and video examples on what to do, and the manual goes into great depth.
Buy it!
Should note that those role-playing upper-middle-management elements are largely lacking on the Soviet side, which has its own political fun to compensate. (Where 'fun' = 'Oh God why are my divisions not moving whhhyyyyyy!') (This is for perfectly legitimate game reasons, btw, and I'm not being sarcastic.)
I should probably also add that the game developer uses some key parts of Suvorov's Icebreaker thesis to explain what's going on with the Soviets and why.
I was interested enough to go looking for more data, and put together this compilation video of two lectures Suvorov made (one for the US Naval Academy) while promoting the English release of "Chief Culprit" in 2009.
(The main compilation lasts about an hour, after the 4:40 minute prologue which actually came as part of the Q&A session for one of the lectures, so you can skip ahead to that without problems. The Q/A session takes up the rest of the video, including some biographical things.)
I haven't given it nearly the amount of love it deserves (of course I can say that about many many games ) but it is most definitely worth it. I would also spring for the boxed copy with the Uber sexy hardcover book.

A disappointing surprise. The Matrix stuff on Steam is no longer on sale even though the Matrix sale is ongoing through December on their site. I have CMANO on Steam. If I get the expansion Shifting Sands on the Matrix site can I also get a Steam product code along with it? Thanks.
Rayfer, that totally depends on whether "Shifting Sands" is also available at Steam. If it is, then yes you can get a Steam code for it after buying at Matrix. If not, you can't yet but when-if-ever they make it available on Steam you can register for a Steam code at that time.
(I've done this before two or three times when buying a Matrix/Slitherine game not yet available on Steam, and then activating it on Steam later.)
In this case, I just checked and Shifting Sands is indeed available at Steam, so you should be able to apply for a Steam code after purchasing at Matrix. O0

Man sometimes i hate the fact I first joined Matrix in late July.
My anniversary coupon (from 2008) arrives each year on January 15th - 2 days after the end of the sale :pullhair:
Ouchie.
...what's worse, it seems to imply that you first bought from Matrix just after their sale!
Like, crap, you missed their sale but you REAAALLLY want that particular game NOW, so...!
Not sure Matrix was running sales in 2008.... :P
I think they only ran one sale a year back then, the Christmas sale. (And then added an Easter Sale later as their second one.)
We would be consequently juggling all year how much we wanted a game vs waiting for it to be (only) 30% off during the Christmas sale. Almost as bad as Playstation 3 games at the PS store! :buck2:
Bought Legions Triumphant and Age of Belisarius for FOG2 and Alea Jacta Est. In an ancients mode at the moment.
I'm usually too slow to play RTS games but the sale had me finally check out the Scourge of War series since that's a historical period I don't know much about but always wanted to learn, and after playing the demo and seeing that it's manageable for a turn based slow poke like me, I picked up both the Gettysburg and Waterloo collections for $30 each, so more good stuff to dive into this winter.
Bruddah, you can't go wrong with the Civil War games. The most fun I've had wargaming in my life is playing Scourge of War using couriers only. It takes some work to get it all set up right, but when you hit the right scenario, with the right settings, oh man you are in for an experience.
I'm saying, playing a Corps vs. Corps or even Army vs. Army, and issuing a total of 40 orders, all through courier. If you think of it as 40 "turns" it makes a lot of sense.
Good stuff...you made excellent choices.

Ah that's great info Toonces, I hadn't thought of that courier feature used as a sort of turn, but I can see how that would be a really cool thing to try, thanks for the good info.
For those of you who have or have been interested in LnL Heroes of Stalingrad there is a great looking mod for it i just came across. There's currently 15 scenarios in the mod, Stalingrad and Carentan scenarios, the guy has plans for more. Game is currently $15 on sale. Installation is pretty straight forward, install a second copy of LnL HOS besides the stock version. Install the main mod by overwriting some files, and then do the same with the scenario files.

Whoa.
I do like the idea of the mod and all the additional scenarios but it looks an utter mess without the counters.
no setting that i can see to use the counters only, but when you hover over the units the counters pop up, but more than one unit in a hex and the other counters aren't really visible. There is still the right lower box to get the units stats when selected. For me the figures match the map terrain better, but thats just personal choice.
My 14 year loyalty discount just arrived in the email.
After watching for it since Thanksgiving, I nearly deleted it by habit... :pullhair: :hide:

I just received my 13 year discount and it is 44% off.
47% off. <:-)
I'm about to spend $67.79, on a cart that would have normally cost me $242.89, so altogether I'm cracking 72% off on average. :bd: That's combined with the winter sale of course.
Picking up (in some cases at last):
the two War in the East DLCs;
the Broken Alliance and Anabasis DLCs for Battlestar Galactica Deadlock;
Field of Glory II (none of the DLC yet);
Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory (I'm on a BoB kick recently);
Heroes of Stalingrad
Tigers on the Hunt
Shifting Sands (my first "CMANO" game, hope to see more of these historical modules in the future)
and WH40K: Gladius
Wow, it's a good thing I wrote all that down first: I just went to check out, and all my items were gone from my cart!!
DLC for Field of Glory 2 is imminent...you cannot resist.
Oh I feel pretty safe resisting until the campaign system comes out (Empires or whatever it is).
Then it's alllll the DLC available up through next year's week before Christmas. At only-God-knows how much off.
Thus the deepness of my strategy becomes apparent.
You'll see.

Yep, the screen resolutions on the older games is what keeps holding me back too....I would like War Plan Orange (and the other smaller naval game), but just concerned visually might be a problem.

Did you look here, http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4491506 I bought the Hussar games and they go widescreen, stretched, but they don't look bad.
Yes, I read that a while ago. Thanks for posting that again. Unfortunately it doesn't help with widescreen resolutions. I guess stretching the 4:3 game screen is the only way to fill up my 25" monitor, but it will probably not look that good. It's a trade off of having such an old game.
1280 x 1024 isn't bad. It's still higher definition than 720p (the original standard hi-def), and a little squarer than 4:3!
Or you can gear down again to 1280 x 960 for true 4:3 ratios, still significantly higher definition than 720p.
(I don't have WPO installed right now, so I don't know if it can natively take those resolutions -- though my provisional guess would be it can -- but it should scale up.)
I'm installing my copy right now, and will test with some sample screenshots if possible tonight (or anyway soon).
I must admit War Plan Orange did intrigue me. I wish they did the others Red/Crimson (UK and Canada) Gold (France) Black (Germany).
I might have to take a look.
I can run 1900x600 (Yeah my monitor is that old) that's not a big deal is it?
Okay, first, for no clear reason my copy is running a masssssive amount of input lag in the main game. Not in the menus, but in the main game. Any input at all takes five or six seconds to register. That includes trying to mapscroll.
No idea why it's happening but it's happening to me and I wanted people to be aware.
Second, the game runs at 1024x768 and there are no resolution options. It did resize my desktop resolution down, or anyway my computer made my monitor run at 768 when in-game, but I could tab-out at the normal 1080. (It is impossible to use the taskbar to quit the game, so any quitting has to be done within the game or else by a warm-boot. This can be important if you accidentally set the game to run both sides by AI, or to play the first turn automatically...! ahem. L:-) )
I'll try to attach some snapshots below, of India, Southeast Asia more generally, and the Home Islands at night (the latter during a part of turn resolution).
Thanks for the screenshots, Jason. I thought the game would have 1280x1024 resolution.
I'll probably sit on the bench for WPO until I get my anniversary coupon which should come in early January.
As for your game's slowness issue, someone else had the same issue and the thread that -budd- posted above seems to have resolve that person's slow issue: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4491506 (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4491506)
Bought WPO for 5.00 during the Matrix fall sale.
Ah yes! -- been so long since I ran it, I forgot about the infamous "deep color" problem! I'll make sure I run it in XPSP2 compatability, too. (Haven't tested the fix yet, but it rings a big bell. O0 )
