Rosters are out and teams are in camp. Games will be here before you know it!
First of three "warmup" games for the US is done. It was nice to see a win but I have serious questions about our back line. A higher caliber team would have eaten them alive last night. Also, it was weird seeing a number 10 running around out there and it not be Donovan.
That video still gives me chills and gets me pumped for soccer!
Just to wet the appetite a bit

Great second goal by Altidore tonight he needed that before heading to the WC.
Also, I think I might be convinced to start buying what ever Bradley is selling after his performance tonight.
I can't wait for the WC to start tomorrow!
While we wait here is a cool article with pictures about the evolution of the World Cup soccer ball.

I am really hoping they crack down on that this year. I'll see y'all in a month when this is over.
For all you soccer haters out there you might enjoy this.
I love Key and Peele, but that's not up to their usual hilarious standards...unless I'm missing something.
The 0-0 at 90 minutes IS funny, because it's true! :D
I hope Germany can go the distance. I heard there were some injuries, but they have a very good team.
I'm leaning to Brazil as they have home advantage.
Here's my pool predictions (attached)
Wow, Brazil looked terrible in their first game despite the outcome.

It's only begun :)
Japanese ref confuses Croat players who claim his English wasn't good. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
Spain self destructed in the second half that was sad to watch but the Dutch look like they could go all the way.
The Dutch do this all the time - they win some game huge early in the tournament, and everyone assumes they're going to win the tournament with a goal difference of 234958723 - 4, and then they lose in the quarterfinals to someone who remembers to play defense like it actually matters. (See also: Euro 2008, WC 2006) The run to the 2010 final was just as much an aberration as their flameout in Euro 2012

John Brooks is completely useless. We should have brought Maurice Edu instead, since he can actually play multiple positions and knows how to defend
that right there is your quality difference.
our subs are John Brooks and aron Johansson
theirs are Kevin Prince Boateng and Michael Essien
advantage, Ghana
What was that about John Brooks? ;)
the irony of brooks getting the header for the winner is that for 40 minutes he was defending like a marshmallow
Brooks was responsible for Ghana's goal also
he's the guy that didn't close down the runner coming through the box
I don't know sh*t about soccer. I just thought it was ironic that you were railing against Brooks and he came through with the goal and a great stop shortly after. I'm sure you're right about what ever it is you said.
USA beats Ghana 2-1!
"I believe that we will win!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Brant is completely right and I hope they don't let Brooks start against Portugal.
More importantly the US staff needs to figure out what is going on with the player's fitness, they knew what the weather would be like so this is unacceptable.
Also we need to figure out how to possess the ball for longer periods or we aren't going to stand a chance.
at this point, two draws will get us out of the group

I think we have a shot at drawing with Portugal but if Germany plays the way they did today and we play the way we did today then there is no way we have a chance against them.
Germany may be resting half of their team to save them for the knockout round by then

so I'm chuckling about a few things related to the game this morning
... Mike & Mike playing all the USA-themed songs they can find. Amusingly, of course, "Born in the USA" - never mind the political sentiment - when a handful of the team were in fact born in Germany. They followed that with "Living in America" when, again, Brooks, Johnson, Green, Chandler, and Jones all grew up in Germany and Johansson grew up in Iceland.
... The über-love for John Brooks for the header, as noted above.
... people bloviating about Landon being the guy that would've replaced Altidore when Jozy went down. Uh, no. Not all forwards are equal, and they play very different ways. Donovan would've been plugged in in place of Bedoya, which is where Zusi went in. We really don't have a one-for-one Altidore replacement in the player pool. We used to have a McBride - Ching duo that could be reasonably swapped for each other, but there isn't a good exchange for the Altidore, unless you count Terrance Boyd.
... Paging Michael Bradley! Paging Michael Bradley! Anyone seen Michael Bradley?

What you have there are bunch of bandwagon fans who actually don't know soccer. Good for them for supporting it but stop talking about it like you understand the game.
If Altidore is going to be out the whole tactical style the US plays is going to have to change up front and I am at a total loss for how that will look. Not to mention the fact they have been training with target forward and it will take alot to switch that mentality. This is going to be interesting to watch and hopefully not to painful.
it was fun sitting in VA and (a) having the whole place cheer when Brooks scored, and (b) listening to the 22-yo dude next to me trying to impress his date with his (barely accurate) soccer knowledge.

C'mon - you're a limey (so you should know better) and you're going to give me that line?!
Did you see who Ghana was bringing off the bench? Boateng and Essien would be starting for about 60% of the other teams at the World Cup right now.
The US played (ironically) old-school Bob Bradley-style, defend-and-counter b/c they had no one to hold up the ball at the other end after Jozy went down. For all the grief he gets, he's an excellent relief valve for the defense to push him the ball and pull the back line up while he holds up play for the offense to take shape around him. Johansson just can't do that - he's not big enough. Jozy is built like a linebacker, Johansson looks like a tennis player.

Well Spain is done and Chile looked really good. It felt like Spain had no backup plan when they were pressured like that. You have to give credit to Chile because they really never let up on the pressure. Spain failed at one of the most basic tasks of soccer, adapting during the run of play. They just didn't adapt, they just kept trying to do the same thing over and over again even when it was obvious it wasn't going to work. The Chile v. Netherlands game looks like it could be very entertaining.
end of an era, i think netherlands shook their confidence and they couldnt string a pass together today - tippy tappy football is over

True, but if Bradley hadn't turned the ball over near midfield so easily and just cleared it to the corner flag we wouldn't be having this conversation. >:(
Also this game further confirmed my dislike of Ronaldo, for all of his skill he is a lazy soccer play who doesn't play as part of the team. Even him having the assist on the equalizing goal he looked all upset that it wasn't him scoring the goal.... :tickedoff:

The Cigarette Smoking Man will never allow the US to get past the first round of the World Cup.
oh...... is this still happening?
Overheard on the radio today, 'I am so glad that we are almost at the knockout round. It means we are that much closer to the start of college football.'
That's a shame, I think the US is doing for the spot they are in. It's the World Cup, Canada hasn't been there since 1986, if we were there I'd be ecstatic!
I heard players in general aren't big fans of having a World Cup in Qatar in the summer. It will be crazy hot (unless its indoors I guess). They might consider the US as a future option. Sweet!
In 2010, when it looked like some stuff in South Africa wasn't going to be ready, FIFA called the USSF about possibly stepping in. The head of the USSF made a comment to FIFA that was essentially "Sure, just make sure you give us a few weeks notice"
I have a European friend who thought that was kind of arrogant, but then we got to talking about sports venues in the US, and I pointed out that you could eliminate (1) every pro football stadium, and (2) the top 20 college football stadiums by seating capacity, and still play the entire World Cup in college stadiums that all seat at least 60,000 people in town that are used to major sporting events (i.e., college football)

The quote I wrote is more a product of where I live. College football is the only game in town. I will say that the sports radio talking heads, including the local guy, have all jumped on the band wagon for the soccer and the World Cup. During the 2010 World Cup, a lot of the games were on radio. I found myself lingering in the truck, waiting to see what happened. Now, in 2014, I have actually tuned in on tv to watch parts or all of matches.

Only in soccer can a man build a reputation for biting opponents and not have his teeth splattered all over the grass by someone. What in the actual f*ck.

Rugby players get it worse than a little biting.....thats just the foreplay if you were up against John Hopoate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hopoate
QuoteDuring a 2001 clash with the Cowboys, Hopoate, in an attempt to unsettle several of his opponents, inserted his finger in three players' anuses, the first occurring during the seventh minute of play. At the conclusion of the match the matter was immediately referred to the rugby league judiciary where a case was put forward from both sides on 28 March.
Hopoate claimed in front of the panel of judges that he was simply attempting to give all three players "a wedgie" with his fingers, denying he had done anything wrong and that he was "a great believer in what happens on the field should stay there".[5]
The three victims in the case, Cowboys players Glenn Morrison, Peter Jones and Paul Bowman all disagreed with the reasoning put forward by Hopoate and his team. Jones stated, "It wasn't a wedgie. That's when your pants are pulled up your arse. I think I know the difference between a wedgie and someone sticking their finger up my bum", while Bowman stated that he was "disgusted" and "couldn't believe it."[6]
Hopoate subsequently was charged with unlawful sexual connection in relation to the incident.

It ain't finished - got another second half of extra time (15 minutes) - but whatever happens - the USA can hold their head up well high. They've played superb.
sad to see the US go out but it was a great game, thrilling, without any controversies and in the end as much as I hate to say it the better team won.
US can go off feeling like they gave it their all a bit of a better bounce earlier and we would be looking at penalty shoot outs right now.
Tim Howard was goalie of the tournament with his saves today, absolutely spectacular

Agreed. It is a shame to not see them advance but they have a lot to work with going forward and I hope it only gets better from here. Now the 4 year wait begins again.
You know - we said going into the World Cup that getting out of the group was going to be a successful tournament.
You can be disappointed, but let's also be realistic - we beat Ghana, should've beat Portugal, and held off a tournament favorite for most of the game against Germany, and quite frankly, could have beat Belgium. It would've been nice to hang on for the Portugal win, even tho it might've made no difference at all in the final reckoning (a 1-0 loss to Germany still leaves us in 2d), but overall it's hard to be too disappointed with this year's performance.
And if you don't believe me, go ask an Italian, or a Brit, or better yet, a Swede or a Ukrainian.
Now, go get 'em Costa Rica!

And if you don't believe me, go ask an Italian, or a Brit, or better yet, a Swede or a Ukrainian.
Now, go get 'em Costa Rica!
Not a Brit - an Englishman - ask an Englishman.
Scotland gave up on major tournaments years ago for...personal reasons ;)

Finally, a Secretary of Defense with some balls.
Err...ball.
So is anyone going to watch the WWII rematch or is the soccer fever over?
I'm going to be watching every game I can. O0
But I'm the soccer nut around here that also DVRs MLS games and can tell you about the CONCACAF teams that never made it out of the home-and-home quals to even get to the group stage that qualifies you for the hexagonal :idiot2:
1982 is the first world cup i remember, in that one the german keeper ran out and destroyed a french player - oxygen needed on pitch, concussion, broken ribs - the ref was that shocked the keeper didnt even get a card and went on to save 2 penalties
I am looking forward to the remaining matches. There are some many good ones especially if you also consider the countries histories with one another.
Holland Germany for the final is my prediction
you could have a final 4 of Germany-Brazil and Holland-Argentina
of course, you could also have Costa Rica sneak in there, too - GO TICOS!
this eve ;D

I told my wife the only way France beats Germany is if the US comes in for the last quarter of the game and does it for them ... ;D
Holland all the way!
Painful to watch Neymar go down like that.
Oranje!!!!!
Krul was the man today. I would've liked to see Costa Rica get thru for CONCACAF, as well as rewarding Navas for playing out of his gourd all tournament. I don't know who's going to make the tournament Best XI, but Navas has got to be in the conversation.
Well the quarter final matches all look great on paper I just hope all 4 teams step up and play with the quality that they have.
would have liked to see the Ticos win with its trillion of luck after surviving 120 min ... but Lady Luck blinked in the last second :-[
now its 'Messi' vs 'Robben' 8)
the match against Brazil will be a extra tough one: one there own turf, the crowd in their back,
and they all play for missing Neymar with even more dedication (if that is possible, they are already dedicated like i dunno what adjective to write), and the (side)referee-team will surly not cripple the host chances with 'in doubt case'-decisions... especially those offsides will be tricky. i would not recommend Löw to rely on the offside trap strategy all to much ...well, there is always Neuer! :-)
Germany vs Brazil, now that will be an interesting match.
Kudos for Les Bleus getting their shit back together again after the 2010 implosion.

everyone watches the WM 2014 ! O:-) ;)
Holy shit! mike is going to run out of Flags if he puts one on his car for each goal they score
Bloody hells bells Germany!!! ;D
unbelievable
someone got an Achtung! Panzer Marche! speech before the game.
here's the most ridiculous thing about that game: 7-1 doesn't fully do justice to Germany's utter domination of that game. Germany shanked 3-4 they should've had, and Brazil's goal was waaaay late, and was marked by stunning defensive indifference by Ozil and Hoewedes. The only more indifferent defenders on the pitch were Brazilian.
It was a Goalecaust!
^^^ love it! so politically incorrect.
What next? Hungry sharks falling out of the sky?

its cold and raining cats n dogs the whole day and unfortunately it didn't stopped after the match, so no beloved Autokorso for me (you need open convertibles and people hanging out of other cars windos and sitting out of open sunroofs 'n such ... and a large crowd on the sidewalks and crossings too) so i stayed at the EOs place and watch the intervies and stuff ...also the EO was against shooting the rockets i saved from newyears eve from her balcony into the night sky, a law infraction of course ...we will watch the final at my place and then it will be salvo cakes firework instead of rockets i release downtown ;-)

Maybe next time...
so who won? I need to pre-plan my snarkyness now.
having said that a UK/Argentine match would have been awesome.
a German/Argentine match will get lots of Odessa comments.
and a Netherlands/German match would be gold.
the Netherland got just renamed to the Neverlands ;)
(i would have liked to play against them ...its bigger fun to win)
Hrrmpf!
Well...given who's left
Kommen auf Deutsch!!
well, if Germany loses the team members can always defect. it's not like it hasn't happened before. :P
I still think the Dutch would have won prior to the shootout. For that, they ran out of player changes (it would have been great if they could have put the backup goalie like a few days ago).

They did that in '86 when the war was still fresh on everyone's mind. That was the Hand of God game when Maradona cheated his way to a victory.
There's so many jokes about Germany killing Brazil that I just can't take an neymar

This is an amazingly boring sport to watch.
I think fishing and baseball might be more boring but not by much.
You're welcome to think so. Personally I can't watch golf, tennis, or most motor sports, but I'm finding this game pretty fascinating.
I've never really liked football and I don't care for the cheating, diving, total disrespect for the officials, the acting and the surrounding of the officials to swing the vote
I watch International games - but that's it...generally speaking I think it's a sport for grown up kids with attitude who don't like to lose ;D
At least racing eventually has as effect on your daily life. 8)
Bas has been getting the living shit kicked out of him all night. He's not really the threat you'd think from the level of attention they're giving him.
and as soon as I type that, Aguero draws blood on Bas's face
Fantastic goal !!!!!
#20 is a lttle bitchass punk from what I've seen.
And GOAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!
GOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!
Did you just see Neuer's throw in the 115th minute or so? Dude just chucked that thing half a field
Thats what they get for hiding nazis and trying to steal islands.
LOL! ;D
Beer out nose :(
One could say they were Belgranoed.
... i am exausted , 120 min nailbitting, wining against the Argentine and partly also the Italian Referee was a bit to much for my nerves ...just back from the Autokorso :smitten: ...its 2:40am 8) fuck yeah !
...and now i can start with the drinking ;D
MikeGer, figured it'd be days before we heard from you. Congrats on the win.

QuoteSCHADENFREUDE (n) -- What Brazilians feel after watching the Argies lose the World Cup in Rio.
If only there was a German word that captured the essence of schadenfreude ;)
While I wanted to see Messi win his World Cup the better team and probably the most consistently good team of the tournament won in the end. Also for those who actually understand the game of soccer it was for the most part a fun match to watch and that goal. :smitten: I wish I had a first and second touch half that good.
I like Messi as well, but why did they give him the Golden Ball award??
If you were aware of any commentary before or during the World Cup, it was his all along.
I've given up on honesty in FIFA - it's as corrupt as government.
In fact - I'm slowly but surely giving up on humanity! I always genuinely believed people were generally good - but my world has slowly been getting turned upside down over the years!
I'm glad Germany beat Argentina after Argentina embarrassed Holland the other day.
How to tease the hell out of your Argentine friends.

lol
unstickying
i like that cake :smitten:
...Thank God the international media didn't discovered this picture from yesterday celebration in Berlin under the Brandenburg Gate yet ...it was 'hidden' in a whole series of pictures in our local newspaper website... ( i saw it when i was searching for a nice special one of celebrating players, that was in the print but not placed online...and thought GDS-Star will like to fool around on fb with it ;))
lol - that's an unfortunate pose for a German today! :2funny:
That's just a friendly "hi" as opposed to a friendly "hi-el hitler" I think. ::)
...there is a big back and for swirling shitstorm battle going on in all kind of social media (like twitter #gauchogate ) about the mocking "Gauchodance" ...and of course some Argentinean sport media pulled the Nazi card already ...biz as usual ;)
...its developing into an
international crisis and the Political Correctness crowd here is going apeshit and having a fieldday all at the same time ::)
(for non soccer enthusiast: Gauchos is the nickname of the Argentinean soccer team like Selecau for the Brazilian , and so one... the dance is part of fan-culture mocking each other since IIRC 2008 or so )
WTH is the gauchodance?
Judge, it was branded 'gauchodance' by the media. (see the YT vid)
it is part of fan clubs mocking each other with songs and choreography after a game
to the rhythm of that children-song the loosing team is named first and you crawl around like 'unhappy and beaten' then with the wining team name you 'jump in the air like joy celebrating'
translation " xxx is walking like this , this is they way xxx is walking, yyy is walking like this , this is the way yyy is walking "
xxx loosing team nick name
yyy winning team nick name
Yeah - I watched the vid and read the report.
So by the PC mad crowd it's being interpreted as Argentinians being beaten and hunch back but the Germans standing tall and proud? Oh well...suck it up ;D
Good tournament from your lot.
Soccer fans like to get under opposing fans skin, it's part of the game and the culture. Just let them piss each other off - it works out in the end :)
I am going through World Cup withdrawal right now and the only thing on is the MLS which doesn't even come close.
Has anyone been able to find a compilation video of all the WC 2014 goals scored??
Quote from: TheCommandTent on July 16, 2014, 12:36:59 PMI am going through World Cup withdrawal right now and the only thing on is the MLS which doesn't even come close.
No quite the same level of play, but at least it's evenly-matched teams. Unless Columbus is playing; they're just canned ass this year.
