Sometimes the only way to hold on still hurts. A lot.

More religiously, it's a reference to Jesus on the cross -- both in the sense of the Messiah voluntarily staying on there no matter how much it hurt, in order to get something important done for Israel and the rest of us; and in a classical sense of Christians holding onto the nailed feet to keep ourselves from going down. Naturally that wouldn't apply outside (except in an evangelical sense), but the secular sense can apply to anyone.

(I had about a 1/3 longer post, but it was more overtly religious and I decided not to go that far, for ecumenical purposes so to speak.)
