From what I've seen not to detailed. I haven't played one yet, watched a few youtube videos on the campaign. I might get around to trying it but right now having to much fun in PBEM and custom battles, trying out different armies.

This has some very mixed reviews.  Armada 2526 which I played recently is very good.

Well that's the ES series in general for you.  The first game was really hit-and-miss, and the sequel appears to be more of the same.  I purchased the first Endless Space, but bounced off it hard.  I really wanted to like the game, but just couldn't get into it. 

50& off is tempting.  How closely does it resemble its predecessor, though? 

Armada 2526 which I played recently is very good.
