any recommendations for horror or zombies in the Steam Halloween sale?  Already have L4D series.

Picked up System Shock 2 (loved this game).  However, Dead Space looks interesting, any thoughts?

Dead Space is a classic survival horror...you get sent here, there and everywhere fixing this and finding that, with the ultimate goal of just getting to the end (I'm being deliberately vague).  If you've played a Resi or a Silent Hill, you've already played Dead Space.  However it's masterfully executed, has a fantastic UI, excellent set pieces and interesting (if slightly hackneyed) story and is just generally a thrill ride.  Providing you like gory horror, that is.  If that sounds like something that interests you, get it.  It isn't a groundbreaking game, but for what it is, it's really good.

(I played the Xbox 360 version so can't comment on the quality of the PC port)

Its a very fun and comical space adventure game.

Nice.

It's good for a light roguelike style game that doesn't take too long at a stretch.

Dead Space for PC is quite good.

Doesn't it limit saves to certain places only, with no save anywhere capability? In the past I grew to hate this sort of set up. Games would have long stretches of play where you couldn't save....then if you died you had to replay the same long stretch over and over again until you got to the next save point.  Does this game do this or are the save points placed to avoid this annoyance?

Hmm I used to hate that set up

yes dead space has predetermined save points. Not a big fan of that mechanic either, just not into replaying sections over and over any more. I've loaded up dead space twice  and played a bit and unloaded it. Not a big fan of games achieving there difficulty by keeping you low on ammo and locking in a room or section, also the fetch it fix it missions that seem to be standard fare is FPS's are just tired.I do like the weapons and atmosphere, maybe thats why i keep loading it up. Maybe i have just played too many of these type games and have burned out on them. I was trying to think of the last FPS type games i really found excellent, that would be the first F.E.A.R. and the first Bioshock, those were also the last 2 i finished and can't recommend them enough. Of course all of this didn't stop me from buying Dead Space 2 yesterday on sale......go figure.

^It's right behind you!

Yes I hate the limited saves too...Shadow of Mordor uses the same system, actually.

Console ports strike again!

Couldn't play Dead Space.  They wouldn't let me remap controls to the number-pad.  There was also an issue of getting it to display past 1280x768.  I recall being able to do it only by tabbing through the options and guessing if I was on the right one because it was off screen.

Gusington

Just about the only thing that Shadow of Mordor does wrong is the limited save spots, Nef. Everything else is great.

Arctic Blast

I have never had an issue with the save system in Mordor. Any time you accomplish anything of note, it's remembered. Exit whenever, and you pretty much never lose any accomplishment.

^But AFAIK, the game saves for you. The player doesn't have any true control over saving, like say in Dishonored or Skyrim.

BTW I just pre-ordered Dragon Age: Inquisition from Green Man Gaming for 47.99. Steep for a game but I did love the first game deeply and have high hopes for this new installment.

^Not that much. The digital deluxe is about 100$ via Origin, which is the only place I know you can get it from.
