With the recent spate of new releases and alpha releases what are peoples thoughts on them?
Which would you recommend taking into account I'd like detailed combat (pref turn based), ship design and ground invasions. I have my eye on Predestination..any others that are worth checking out?
Games I'm thinking about\looking at are...
Last Federation
Stardrive
Star Ruler
Horizon
Starship Corporation
Gemini War 2
Last Federation isn't your typical 4X game.
It's something completely different.
And is there actually a Gemini Wars 2?
I remember the first wasn't very impressive.
There are also Lords of the Black Sun (formerly Star Lords) and M.O.R.E. that are in development. They are both turn based with tactical combat games like Predestination. LotBS is in beta on Steam right now. I'm not sure where M.O.R.E. is at. Time will tell if either of is any good.
I think Predestination is the one I'm looking forward to the most, although I'm not sure why, since I haven't seen much of it. I've already bought all three, because I can't stop myself. :(
Thanks..think I will wait to see what Presdestination is like..I too have a feeling it could be good..but like you not sure why.
This is a no brainer. Head on over to Good Old Games, and pick up Master of Orion.

Feedback about the second one (still in beta) is very very positive. I haven't jumped in yet as i don't have the time but it looks very promising.
Considering your preferences, i agree that MOO1 or MOO2 are the best choice. Among the games you mention, the closest to MOO and your preferences seems to be Horizon: Humans in Space. I am still learning the game and haven't invaded any planets but it's turn-based (also the battles) and you can design your own ships.

Can't find anything about Gemini Wars 2.
The developers seem to have gone into hibernation or something since January this year.
Are you sure you're not mixing Gemini Wars with Starpoint Gemini (SG2 is on Early Access on Steam)?

Oups...indeed!
The Gemini Wars team is working on a tactical game set in the Gemini Wars universe, called Black Talons.
Starpoint Gemini isn't a 4X game then.
It's one of those in the likes of Freelancer/Elite.
Armada 2526 Supernova

Armada 2526 Supernova
I love it too but there's no ship design and the battles are not turn-based...still a very good recommandation.
I still say a modded and patched MOO3 is king. It matches all of the criteria noted by the OP and exceeds everything else in executing it. Best ground combat, good ship design, detailed ship combat, etc.

I was about to post the exact same.
I've got the gog version with Vanilla 1.5 installed (the bug fixes, no mod extras) and it's THE best 4x game I've played as yet.
(Windows 7 install info here: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=6576.30)

I was a tester at Atari when MOO3 was released. It was universally hated by the QA team. I've heard it eventually evolved into a good game, but I remember it as being truly awful.

For a modern turn-based 4X space strategy game, I also turn to
Endless Space.
I've tried to get into
Armada a few times, but it just felt cold and lifeless to me and not terribly deep except having to ship your population back & forth, which I wasn't too crazed about anyway.
There is also
Space Empires IV, but it's showing some age these days. I suppose this and MOO3 are the classics, if you can handle the fugly and lower resolution.

Crap... we meant
MOO2!
MOO3 was a buggy damn mess and they never fixed it. I can understand why it was loathed. There were some mods later made to fix many things, but by that time it was pretty much dead. Plus it's fixed low screen resolution didn't entice many extra people to try it with mods years later, either.

That's surprising Chris, because with the fan-made unofficial patch which fixes all of the bug AFAIK, (vanilla mod 1.5), I think this is the best 4x game I've played yet. I'm going to get MOO2 on GOG and try that though, since if what everyone says is true, I'm going to enjoy that one even more.

Well everyone here knows I'm a fanboy of both Armada 2526 Supernova and Distant Worlds. I'm not sure what more I can say about those two games that I haven't already said.
On a planetary scale, Pandora: First Contact is also a very solid 4x title. I don't think you can go wrong with that one.
For future releases of 4x games, Predestination is probably the one I'm most looking forward to. StarDrive 2 is second on my list, as it interests me with its combination of turn-based empire management and real-time battles. Lords of the Black Sun appears as if it'll be fairly solid, if a bit bland.
M.O.R.E. is the big wild-card for me. It appears to offers the most promise, but I worry the devs have aimed too high and/or have bitten off more than they can chew. It's either going to be a surprise success, or a spectacular failure.

I purchased MOO3 based on Jarhead's recommendation and haven't regretted it. I did have problems getting it modded up and running as well as figuring out how to actually play! But it was solid and there was always a lot to do. I never played MOO 1 or 2 so maybe that's why I likes 3.

Like I said, I heard MOO3 had improved a lot. Let's just say I've seen to much of the sausage factory to enjoy it. The guy who was test lead for that left the industry after it shipped. Totally burned out. MOO2 is great, though dated now.
I played MOO3 patched up last year and keep meaning to go back to it. I WAS having fun with it!

Having messed around with MOO-3 for a bit, I have a hard time understanding the hate. I asked before and Jarhead thought that people were disappointed that it wasn't an upgraded Moo-2.
It took a different tack. Maybe, I never played them, but this game seems quite good. Even the "let's play" guy starts his MOO3 video talking about how much the game sucks and everyone hates it. Am I missing something? I mean, it's pretty deep. Lots of research, good ship design, detailed fleet and unit organization, decent planetary building. Heck, I even like the combat...especially watching point defense lasers blowing up incoming missiles.

If you played the original, unpatched release you would understand the hate a lot better. ;)
If they had released the last patched version, even with its flaws that modders had to fix, it wouldn't have been nearly so hated. On the other hand, a lot of people wanted MOO2+, so they weren't going to be happy in any case. If I remember right, Alan Emirch originally pitched the MOO2+, but Atari wanted bigger and better.

Now you guys have me thinking about this game....I have never played any of them so I guess I wouldn't be tainted in thinking the first or second version was better. I actually like the fact it sounds like it might have been made a little easier (less micromanagement) in the 3rd version...

Well I don't know any better. I bought it and installed "tropical mod" before I ever played it. It's a bit dated at 1024 resolution but not too bad. I dig it. I prefer distant worlds I suppose....but DW lacks something I can't put my finger on. I think it's the "pew pew pew" combat. I don't know. Still waiting for that dark, dirty and ominous space 4x instead of bright happy neon ships and hamsters in space suits.

I never understood the hate, but for an old sci-fi guy like me, this is a game I would certainly have been elated over at release, then disappointed. I guess I can see that now.
Before I played it I liked the look of the interface because it looks like it means business, a bit LCARS and I was expecting to be disappointed once I got into it but I'm not.
I find it immersive, fun and not the steaming pile of crap I was expecting.
I never knew the pre-release hype and had zero expectations. I'm having a lot of fun as a result and it ticks many boxes for me. Somehow, this game really sparks the imagination. If I were a writer I can see myself writing some deep AAR's from this game. I may just do that.
Just simple stuff like surveying new systems, reading the demographics, designing ships and creating fleet and ground forces OOB's are what I dig. Diplomacy, battles and empire-building are an added bonus.
The Vanilla fix mod is good but the Tropical mod is better. I'm currently playing as the Humans, with a pre-game change to Monarchy with the extra points put into Military.
Ian, you might really enjoy "Aurora" if organizing fleets and ship design is your thing. There is no game in existence with more "ship design" detail....for better or worse
From the Aurora Wiki:
"Some say it has the graphical charm of an income tax assistant software from the late nineties..."
Even more than the legendarily steep learning curve, this is what keeps me away from this game.
Fans of the game, mikeck and co. -- how do you get past the "GUI barrier"? It just seems like it must be such an immersion killer. It seems hard for me to get excited about ship design when your ships only exist as simpletext spec reports.
It's all "want to". In the end, we all suspend disbelief everytime we play any game. I think of it as me designing a ship in an office. When it deploys, I'm in the control center somewhere watching the action. It's immersive because you make it that way. You create the story and create a universe to match it . It's spreadsheets in space with some harpoon thrown in, no doubt. I wanted to learn it so I did

You have the benefit of much post-release fixes in the mod you installed. If you were playing a long un-modded game, you would likely get frustrated with the bugs at some point.
Reinforces the strategy of sitting on the fence for a long time, to see if someone fixes such buggy releases.

It ended up being pushed out the door I believe when Atari forced their hand, and it was in a poor state. Right around the time Alan's assocation with the project ended they had a major change of course and ripped out tons of stuff. I think some of the disappointment besides the state it was in, was the wondering of what had been ripped out of it. It would be interesting if someone could get Alan to do a post mortem of the project in one of this game design classes.
Aurora is a great solid core of 4X gaming goodness.

Because nearly all companies never ask strategy gamers what they want and they never think outside the box.

I agree Chris, but there is some kind of common ground where we all agree that certain features and mechanics are fun, immersive and satisfying. I believe that the most fun and successful strategy games all have certain things going on that can be combined into one package, including interface, map layout, feedback, details, modability, things that immerse, level of detail and so on.

(I definitely want to respond in some detail, but at work so probably won't have a chance to do so until later this evening or tomorrow.)

BTW, what other mods are good ones to try?
I got the GOG version of MOO3 installed this weekend with the Tropical mod. In addition to these instructions, I also had to download MFC71.dll and register it in the syswow64 folder in order to get the MOO3patcher program to work. This is on a Windows 8 computer.
I just started re-learning the game, so hopefully I will discover the fun you guys are having.
Thanks for the instructions.
What about Arcen's AI War? That's pretty good. Also Solar War is quite different - although not really 4X, and no sound! :o You have to stream your own music for that one, but no sound is...weird. Good game though.

Anyone know of anywhere to get a manual for MOO 3? Or maybe a web site that explains how to play? I watched the "let's play" videos awile ago but still have questions
Also if you have the tropical mod installed, look inside the encyclopedia. There are a bunch of guides from online installed there now.
Ok. In game encyclopedia? Or is it saved in a file?
