I've been playing the hell out of this game for months now, but haven't given much feedback yet because it's still in Alpha. Even the alpha is lots of fun though. When this game goes live, it's a must-buy for all zombie loving Grogs.

This game has been a time-suck for me since version 4.5, which is amazing in an alpha release. I've put the kind of hours into 7DTD that I normally reserve for the latest CIV or Fallout game. My weekend plans just got rewritten.

Yup it's a really fun game, but I'm still wrapping my limited metal capacities around all of the crafting changes that have been made over the last several builds.

you dont have to guess anymore, just highlight an item and it shows what you need in the build box. it's also in category's now, and once you build something you click on the item and as long as you have the parts you build it. I've played a couple hours and it defiantly is more of a survival game now, there's less loot now[still could use a little less] I traveled for hours and didn't see a building or a car or a backpack.I spent my first night starving and thirsty huddled in an attic in the dark after i finally found a small 4 building settlement. Clearing out the zombies took a bit in my weakened state, i had to drink dirty water and it raised my thirst meter but gave me a tummy ache.

Waiting for sunrise

Jesus Marimbo, this game.

I bought it this morning and installed it but had to wait for work to be done before I could really try it out. Did two attempts.

First was a randomly-generated world. Was dumped on a road in a forest and immediately beset by a crawly, which I dispatched with my masterful fists.

More were on their way so I headed in a direction along the road, thinking it would make it easier to spot dead things (though figured it would make it easier for them to see me). Found my way to a river and a bridge, where on the other side was some ruined town full of partial walls, brick debris, and tons of cinder blocks. Also lockers. And oh yeah, tons of dead things that wouldn't give me a moment to try to figure out how to craft.

That last bit would be a pain in my ass because I was trying most of the time. I struggled because the interface looks different from what I saw in several Let's Play videos, which kind of pisses me off but that's how it goes with Early Access titles - they're always a-changin' I suppose.

I re-crossed the river and tried to figure out how cinder blocks worked, got beset by more dead things, ran a while, then exited as my wife asked me to do something.

Restarted a game with my second attempt by choosing the default map. Landed on a road in the middle of a snowy forest and already heard the hisses and growls of dead things. Searched a few cars and boxes and found tons of ammo and useful stuff, even a damn sledgehammer! Nice start. So I ran down the road, sprinting whenever I heard the sounds of the decaying, took a right at a T-intersection, saw some buildings on the map but it ended up being some kind of lumber mill. With plenty of dead things. Mostly "Frozen Lumberjacks" which were a bitch to bring down even with a sledgehammer. Did I mention there were a lot of them? I tried exploring and tried breaking into a building but there were too many of them wandering around so I had to give it up, but then the bastards surrounded me so I hacked my way out. I got an infectious bite. I made it out of the crowd and tried to enter a smaller building but there was no damn entrance. I closed it down for the night.

I mean, wow. I'm both appalled and intrigued by this game. Not a f&ck was given by the game to give me an easy time so I could try to play around with the environment a bit and learn (I DID set everything to 'noob' level difficulty). Still those bastards came at me relentlessly. I'll have to do some online research to figure some basics out before I jump in again because I really don't like being helpless right off the bat (hello, 'noob' level difficulty? Give me five frikkin' minutes, here? Throw me a bone at least! Oh wait...I think it did, I found a bone in one of the trash piles.).

Banzai,

Adjust a few things before startup to give yourself a chance to learn how the game is played. My first game inevitably led to me being swamped with zombies while I was armed with a mere stick. Do yourself a favor and set the sliders to an easier level. The game is very customizable and will be even moreso when it's released as a completed product.

For the new player, I recommend setting the game to Zombies Never Run, Loot 200% (still stingy), Drop on Death Toolbelt Only, Damage Given very high, Damage Received medium, Enemy Spawning Low (or very low), Enemy Aggression Normal. Then go to Gameplay and adjust your Percentage of Night to 35%, 24 Hour Cycle to 50 minutes, and Craft Timer to none. These settings will allow you to get your feet wet without the wet feeling being your bladder.... Don't get too attached to your first game or two, it's an Alpha and most of us generally start over with each major patch (Alpha 10 in about two weeks).

There is a methodology to the game (not the same thing as a formula) where you deal with the most immediate priorities first. Generally, that means creating a stone ax as a weapon and as a tool, doing everything crouched, avoiding zombies while looting, and learning what you need to create shelter and better weapons (a crossbow is generally next). There is a lot of information on the forum, as well as a constantly updated crafting webpage http://7daystodie.gamepedia.com/Crafting (http://7daystodie.gamepedia.com/Crafting) and http://7daystodie.gamepedia.com/Category:Craftable_items (http://7daystodie.gamepedia.com/Category:Craftable_items)

The game is worth it, imho. I've put a few hundred hours into it and it's just a damn alpha. The finished product will include NPCs, a character leveling system, vehicles and tons of goodies. I've already seen the game improve so much I have to remind myself it's only an alpha.

Oh, one last piece of advice for the moment. Stick with the generic map for now (Nav) and deserts and grasslands/forests are your best starting areas. Zombie lumberjacks.....yeah, they are tough!

Thanks for the info. Though those ARE the settings I'm playing with...I chose "Scavenger" as the difficulty level and it's doing those levels you mention (200% loot, etc.).

I'll stick with it. I mean, your recommendation and the others' is indicative of a game that's well worth my time investment. I'll check those links out, definitely. Thanks!

I haven't really played since I think it was the 9.2 beta patch.  However as Steelie said this game is outstanding considering it's an alpha/beta prerelease stage of development.  I'll tell you that the difficulty has steadily ramped up as the beta patch have been released.

Once you get some crafting experience going, the game will start to flow. Like The Walking Dead, most of my deaths by zombie now happen because I got careless and got used to them. I will admit that I hate running zombies though, and although I've turned my difficulty levels up, no running zombies for me. I'm strictly Night of the Living Dead/The Walking Dead canon as a player. But a zombie horde is a zombie horde, no matter the difficulty   :knuppel2:

The random aspect of start-up is enough to keep me coming back for more. I've had rotten start-up luck in both my attempts, but that's par for the course for me (I tend to have horrid luck with such things). Eventually I hope I'll start somewhere where there will be a bit of peace and quiet for at least a few minutes.

I could swear one of those easy/Gus settings stated that zombie spawning would be limited for a certain timeframe, but apparently that's not the case or I don't remember right.

Is there not a radar in the new build?

I saw this in videos of previous builds, and note that the 7 Days Wiki references it (perhaps it hasn't been updated).

That would be very useful, though I understand the immersiveness of not having it present.

No radar. It was never meant to be anything more than a placeholder in early alpha builds. You do have a map and more importantly, you can hear the zombies around you and get a good idea of where they are. I liked the radar, but adapted very quickly to life without one.
