Just same this on Steam for $9.99. Anyone know anything about it? Says it's a 3rd person action shooter.
I own and played it on PS3. It's a prologue to the 3PS Space Marine game which had wider release a little later.
I liked it. It's a twin-stick shooter design, lots of Orky and Marine color, actually gets across the fluff idea that each Marine is supposed to be worth a whole army -- so two (or one for single-player) are all that's needed to do the mission. Plus some Tyranid action (spoiled by the promotional art for the game), a little like Space Hulking.
Campaign wasn't overly long, but it's supposed to be the kind of game you and your bro (or significant other) can blow a day or two on, leveling up your respective Marine characters and reducing the Horde in that Rok to chunks. As a twin-stick shooter (2SS, one stick pushes the character around the isometric 3D map while the player watches from far above, the other stick aim-shoots) it's a little like co-op Dawn of War 2 but with more direct action.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was released at about the same time, as well as a Ghostbuster game, with similar twin-stick game design. Another even better (and perhaps more famous) 2SS game with Alienesque trappings came to Steam not long ago from console, the amazing Alien Breed trilogy (made by the devs most famous for the Worms series for some reason.) It predates Kill Team and may have directly inspired it; the whole trilogy runs a little under $25 right now on Steam (probably also GG and GoG), but is easily worth the full price of $10 each, and of course can be found on sale occasionally.
Thanks Jason! I played Space Marine and liked it, even if it was a fairly brief campaign. I even played a bit of multiplayer.
Seems hard to go wrong with this for $10. I'll take a look at Alien Breed, too. Sounds like they might make for a nice break from more "serious" wargaming.
Played this on the 360 in coop with Hiimori - great little game, worth buying!
Is there any character advancement in this?
Can you increase base statistics, get skills/passives, new equipment, etc... ?
Not only can you get new skills/passives, new equip, etc., but you can carry those over into new games if you want (or not if not).
Several Astartes chapters are provided for playthrough, too; if I recall correctly they have at least slight different base stats so aren't merely cosmetic. I can't recall if two players can each pick a Marine type (new or previously upgraded) from different chapters, though -- IIRC you can't, which would make sense within the game context. I solo'd the game as a Techmarine, by the way.
The Steam photos do represent the graphics well, although I'm
pretty sure there's no way to get so close during actual gameplay. (The camera does zoom in at places during gameplay but not in player control.)
Two total Warhammer40K newbs play the game in the above video (first 10 minutes or so, with extra parts later). IT'S HILARIOUS! Listening them try to deal with literally everything in the game I mean, not the game itself.
Wow never heard of this...thanks for posting!
Angry Joe, waaaaay back in 2011 (when Kill Team released on XBox first), gives his first gameplay impressions:
Sadly his old site no longer exists where he played more of it, but this is 20 minutes worth.
His best friend other-Joe has no Warhammer experience at all, so it's all new to him; AngryJoe knows the fluff. (e.g. a lot of Orky tech only works because they believe it will work.)
It's entertaining...except that it keeps crashing for me. >:(
Huh. It never once crashed on my PS3... :coolsmiley:
