Title: Which cartridge caliber do you prefer?
Post by: CosPetia on June 19, 2014, 08:57:10 AM
Hi friends,

I would like to ask you which cartridge caliber do you prefer when shooting for fun? I personally prefer to use 9x19mm. or 38SP. I also use Makarov pistol as well as Smith & Wesson revolver.

.22 LR. It's the only thing I can afford to shoot these days.

I just pull out whatever I feel like shooting and buy ammo for that.

I love shooting my .204, but it's hard to find ammo for it at times.

I just bought a Walther PPQ Navy SD in 9mm so I'll be burning through that for the next while.  Took it up to the range for the first time today.  The trigger is amazing!  (Sights are off though, pulling 3/4" left at 30').

Nice. I have the PPS. Does your PPQ have the threaded barrel?

Yes.  The 5" M2s aren't commonly available in Canada yet and the M1s have a 102mm barrel.  106mm is the minimum allowed in Canada so the only legal PPQs are those with the threaded barrel or the new 5" M2s.  Mine's an M1 with the paddle style mag release.

I liked that rifle you got, JH, that looked like it was straight out of Space Marines.  Did you ever get a chance to shoot it?

LOL, did you really have to ask?  Actually I didn't realize that was a "want".  I thought you bought it.

If you're going to get one, get the trigger conversion.  The default trigger is a bag of ass and grit.  It's what convinced me to get the H&K SL8/G36 conversion instead (and I'm still kicking myself for it.  That 3.5x scope in the carry handle has to be the absolute worst scope I've ever used.)

How do you find the sights on the PPS?

I'd like to make an adjustment to the windage on mine but there doesn't seem to be any way to do it other than a drift pin and a hammer.  I'm worried about breaking the tritium night sights if I start whaling on it.

Yeah. I never got the Tavor.  The laws in NY changed before it really hit the commercial market.  I've seen them in gun shops when I visit my folks in Florida or my brother in Texas.  My active gun shooting days are over until I manage to get out of this pathetic state.

I don't think I've actually shot the PPS, yet.  I have more guns that I have never shot, than guns that I have...go figure.

Why is that?  It surprises me is all.  It's not like a boardgame where you have to get out the rules, read 'em, find a partner to play it with, and so on.  I'd expect you'd take a new gun to the range the first Saturday after you got it.

This is all pre-NY nonsense, of course.  I can understand why you wouldn't shoot this weekend, for example.

like any hobby, you buy what you want when you can and get to it when you can.
I once sold off a closet full of military models that I know I would never get to.   when I got them it was something I wanted and the price was right.

You don't realize just how large of a collection we are talking about. Not only is it large, its diverse. Some of them are a pain in the ass to clean after shooting and I have so many, I hate relearning the entire process.  Moreover, with so many different calibers, it became expensive to keep all of it in stock and to replenish, especially when the panic buying started out here.  It was always just so much easier to grab an AR or an AK and stick to something that I could strip and clean in my sleep.

Good point.  I hadn't even thought of that.  I guess learning to properly disassemble, clean, and reassemble a new gun can be quite a process...and if you don't keep doing it you forget how...

Awesome.  That makes perfect sense.

Still, that Tavor is pretty awesome.  If I was going to get a gun, that's something I would definitely want.  I wonder if it's fun to shoot?  It seems kind of a weird set up with the trigger in the front like that.

Its called a "bullpup". It permits a firearm which is chambered in a standard rifle round to have an overall shorter length than a typical rifle, without sacrificing barrel length. Most of them are extremely comfortable to shoot and very easy to manipulate and maneuver. While I never was able to get a Tavor, I did manage to get these before the fall...

It's shocking how little some of you Navy boys know about guns.  :uglystupid2:

I never fired the thing but I did fiddle with one in the store and I've chatted with a couple of guys who have them at the range.  They all had roughly the same opinion as this guy.

Having said that, there might be some differences between the US version and the Canuck one.  The one available in the US is made in the US.  The one in Canada comes from Israel.

That's a neat idea about the barrel.  Looking at that FN FS2000, so I can see how you put the butt onto your shoulder and would have your shooting finger on the trigger, but the remainder of the stock seems awfully short for your other hand to rest on.  Maybe it has a hidden folding handgrip for your front hand?  Anyway, that's an extremely cool looking rifle...looks like it's from HALO.

When I get out to Rhode Island we'll have to get together for a shoot, and a beer afterwards.  I'll be we won't even be two hours apart when I get out there.   :P

It looks like that pic of the FS2000 has been 'shopped at the bottom of the rifle somehow. The mag protrudes farther than the bottom of the 'pistol grip' area yet they both seem to touch the display base, and not even in the same plane created by the rifles length. The photographer must have digitally removed some little doohicky that the grip was resting on to keep the whole rifle level.

Not that it's important or anything but it looks weird, like that famous pic of those Chinese bureaucrats who seemed to be floating above the road they were standing on.

BTW have any of you fired a P90? What sets it apart from the other bullpup designs? Besides the expensive ammo, that is.

We will definitely meet for beer, laughs and a shoot. However, since I'm now living in a place that is like post invasion Red Dawn, we'll only be shooting shotguns and  rifles with no pistol grips or detachable mags.

Nothing is cut off on the photo. The gun is supported on a rifle stand that is inserted Into the mag well. There is no mag inserted into the rifle in that picture.

I have shot a p90 both fully automatic and semi auto. Other than the 5.7 round, the mag is unique in that it is top loaded and typically has a capacity of 50 rounds.

What was the purpose of the top loading mag? To make the gun even shorter?
