$15 seems like a fair price to me for such high replay value. I recently made the jump from PS3 FIFA 2008 to FIFA 2013, i was considering FIFA 2014 but tight on budget for now besides according to some online reviews there isn't supposed to be much difference between the two except the updated league rosters and a bit of graphics polishing.
AFAIK Fifa games DO NOT include a stock World Cup Tournament, though you can emulate the WC through the tournament customization option in which (either league or knockout type) you can choose many international teams available, i'm not so sure if in the latest versions of FIFA you can customize the number of games between the teams in the group stage.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. I didn't jump though because I suspect once the US is out of the cup, I will lose interest again. ;)

FIFA 14's defensive gameplay is much better than 13's hard to control one.
There are countries in every FIFA game, just not the World Cup as a tournament, but you can make your custom tournament with any clubs / countries you want. The thing about the World Cup spin-off games is that in those you have a tailored experience with all the teams and players participating, while in the base game transfers are only accurate for the clubs, not the countries.
As a football lover I always buy the next FIFA when it comes out and I feel the game is one more example of where the negative vocal minority make it seem like some iterations are bad games or where the age old battle between PES and FIFA just won't ever cease.
For me, FIFA has always been the better game. It has more authentic stuff due to them having more licenses than the PES crew have which is good for immersion. It is true though, that FIFA has drifted more towards the 'sim' aspect of the spectrum, while PES tries to keep it in the 'fluid gameplay' aspect of the spectrum.
It's hard to explain how this translates to gameplay, you should play both to get a feel.
Bottomline is that FIFA remains a top notch football game with LOTS of content and a slick presentation. It takes quite some practise to get good at it, though. Especially online, but there are lots of options to scale your difficulty.
And for that price I wouldn't think twice, save for one thing;
The game is an absolute b*tch to play with mouse and keyboard. You *need* a controller.

My main gripe with the game (many years ago admittedly) was when it switched players. So you were defending and you went running to the opposition with the ball and it would switch to a different player at the most innopportune times - and sometimes often. So where you were running towards the player, it would switch to a different player for you running in the opposite direction - and because you were running right (for example) towards the player with the ball, when it switched, your new player who WAS running towards the player with the ball started running away because I wasn't fast enough noticing when the switch was made...
What would result was two players doing pirouettes in the field and creating a nice big gap for the player with the ball.
Your speed of reaction was (is?) crucial.

This still happens if you have assisted mode on for player switching. The game tries to interpret you next move but it often fails. Just disable it and switch between players manually.

Partly, but this goes for all sports games. Anticipation is more important, I'd say. Walk in between two opposing players to deny a pass or intercept just in time. That sort of stuff is more important in football than reaction times.

Bought AND had to lay out for a game controller. I did get the game (CD Key) from some online store and activated through Origin. I can likely use the controller for Elite:Dangerous too though.
It's actually not too bad. I, on the other hand, am awful! I mean, proper dreadful! This will take practice.
Saying "it's not bad" - there were 5 (yep...SEVEN) red cards issued in my last game...3 to the opposition and 4 to me. They weren't even bad tackles!! Literally just barging off the ball and the like...not one of them was a sliding tackle...so the cards are whacked, and I have now switched them off.

I am still considering myself...but haven't done it. Funny you mention the cards,I actually thought I read the opposite where not enough was given out.
My first couple of games there were none. But this ref went straight for red - not one yellow was given - just seven red cards! :uglystupid2:

Only once the sales get weak on the consoles. I also suspect that if FIFA starts to rival Madden in sales, that game will also suddenly become a console exclusive. Such is EA's modus operandi. >:D

My understanding is that each ref has a different personality, some strict, others lenient. Maybe that is what happened.
possibly...but the reds were really badly awarded...and it was simply too many...safer to switch them off if they're going to be that ridiculous
We'll, stupid me....forgot I bought fifa 13 last year so downloading that now to play:). I hear not much difference so maybe I will get my fix....gotta keep track of all these games:)
