Did somebody say Boobs? I thought it was an updated version of my favorite kids show about a horse named Fury. Why not? They've re-done everything else. Did I ask if somebody said Boobs?

OK, here's my impressions. The movie tries real hard to be equal parts Sole Survivor and Saving Pvt. Ryan complete with the mandatory heroic last stand at the end. It also goes way out of it's way to be as dark and ugly as possible while not spoiling all the violence with any kind of a message or moral to the story. For the life of me I don't know after 2 hours and 15 min., what the hell this movie was about except for Americans and Germans killing each other. I mean not a single, "The more Germans we kill, the sooner this war will be over" or some other reason to kill all those Nazi bastards other than they're Nazi's and bastards. On the positive side, there's some great action scenes and comic book-like fights and the tank battle with the Tiger is worth the price of admission by itself. And the tanks look gorgeous. The acting's good and the scenery very believable. I wanted to love this movie but can't in all conscience give it more than a 6 out of 10. If only it was ABOUT something. Just me. ;)

How's the historical aspect?  It's supposed to take place in April, '45 right?  It is supposed to be after the Yanks were told to stop at the Elbe?  Hope it's not another U-571 take on things.
Title: Re: Fury
Post by: Sir Slash on October 17, 2014, 09:23:26 AM
The historical aspect was disappointing too. The tanks line-up nice and close together for great screen shots, they fire on the move and almost always hit the target first shot, Pitt's tank gets hit at least 3 times by AT guns and they all richocet and at one point he orders his crew to dismount and fight the Germans on foot alongside other infantrymen. Pitt fights most of the movie with his head out of the tank just like the other American tankers do so you can get close shots of their war-faces. I didn't dis-like the film, it's a good war movie. Just don't take it too seriously. And Star, all the great movies have been about something. There's no tale here. Not even a reason why these guys hate the Germans, and each other, so much. Beyond having a shitty day.

I saw this movie today.....no idea whether historical, believable, or tells a story...but all in all was a good WWII movie that kept me interested throughout and made the 2+ hrs fly by.  Like most movies like this, was kind of predictable and you knew generally how the ending would go.  I won't provide any spoilers and such, but certainly was worth my time and money.  Now I just need a good WWII tank sim game so I can relive it myself:)

I think you can buy the movie Sherman as a premium tank.
Title: Re: Fury
Post by: Staggerwing on October 18, 2014, 05:12:35 PM
FWIW, tank commanders riding into battle with their heads out of the turret might seem a stupid thing to do but it wasn't that uncommon in tanks with very poor buttoned-up visibility. During the time of the Six Day War Israeli tankers pretty much made it unofficial but standard MO until someone got around to counting up all the tank commanders with head wounds after the fighting died down. During WW2 the Germans developed a special commander's cupola that had vision blocks placed around it's circumference to give their buttoned up crews a little more SA. IIRC, the British also retrofitted some of their lend-lease Sherms with a similar setup.

Title: Re: Fury
Post by: Grim.Reaper on October 18, 2014, 05:34:19 PM
That is one thing I appreciated in this movie was seeing things from inside the tank.   No idea how they ever saw their targets with all the potential blind spots.  Couldn't imagine being inside one of them in hostile territory.

I think the ridiculously unusual stories in some war movies *cough* Saving Private Ryan *cough* detract from the soldiers' perspectives.

here's a self-absorbed dork babbling on about the movie
https://www.facebook.com/groups/221051524573205/permalink/877386012273083/

QuoteRegarding the film "Fury," which Wargamers presumably will be seeing:
I shared my concern about the film "Fury" undermining the Honor of the U.S. Army and the Laws of War with 3 key, high ranking Army officers and within just a couple hours ... on Sunday! ... 2 of them responded. At the least, the Army does not endorse films, but I hope it will denounce this one.
Commissioned, honorable officers stop/prevent the murder of prisoners and rape. Islamic State warriors perpetrate crimes like these, not American *soldiers*, and I have been fighting this soldier vs. "warrior" issue for years, now.
I will view the film ... someday ... for its tank combat sequences and to verify what I have heard and written about it. Other Army veterans are starting to speak out as well, and that is good to see.

The real kicker?  Dude doesn't even live in the US.  He left the US for Norway years ago.

oy...

I hope you're right about the Director's cut Star because I couldn't help but notice not all of the scenes in the very good trailer were in the movie. Might be some damn good parts were left out. I could've looked at the Tiger tank all night. Or your avatar. Or your avatar riding the Tiger tank. I'm getting hot just thinking about it.

Well - I saw the movie.

The good

The bad

Again - like Sir Slash - not a bad movie - not at all. Well worth a visit to the cinema and a Blu-Ray purchase. But I didn't get their relationship. They'd been cooked up in that tank "fightin Germans in North Africa, fightin Germans in France and now fightin Germans in Germany"...and I really got the impression there wasn't a lot of love lost between them...only when the chips were down did I get the feeling of camaraderie - and even then it was kind of minor.

Don't regret it - just didn't get "it"...whatever "it" was.

And for the record I don't go to movies looking for some deep meaning or other morality issue being forced on me. I don't expect it, don't look for it and, very often, don't even see it if it's there. I'm kind of a "skin deep" guy when watching movies.

I know I sound like I didn't like it but I did. It was just missing something I put that on the characters.

The Hitler Youth did do better, if you recall the scene where the column of tanks were rolling along the edge of the forest.

It was really more to do with the fact that they couldn't seem to work out that all the guns on the tank faced forward and therefore there was a BIG juicy Sherman arse waiting to have a panzerfaust shoved up it.

Agreed Judge. And another thing in the minor, picky-rant category, the guys in the tank lose a tread to a mine and then have no problem hoping-out and wandering all around on foot. It's like they KNEW there weren't any more mines around. :o Centurion, I thought the Hitler Youth scene was one of best in the movie.
Title: Re: Fury
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 22, 2014, 10:56:50 AM
Yep.

It seems really down that we're talking it down. Daft really as it was a good movie but definitely the characters (not individually which I thought were played superb) but as a group - I just didn't get how they didn't knit together better. They seemed like they resented each other but especially the Sarge. It just didn't really make sense for a group that had been together for so long.

It was that aspect that left me kind of in purgatory - not really knowing what to think except "That was a great movie - but wtf?"

But definitely worth a watch...and as I said, individually the characters were, I thought, superb for the most part.

Oh yeah!  That struck me too!  An AT mine might not get set-off by an individual soldier walking on it, but jumping on it (from down-off a tank) might be a different story.

Come on, the entire final battle scene was pretty ridiculous.  I get that the target audience isn't really the grog crowd but even for the general populace, the actions of the Germans are absurd.

*********SPOILERS*************

We're treated to a scene showing the SS battalion marching in column and dozens of panzerfausts are in evidence.  Why on earth aren't those being used by AT teams from several directions after dark?

Why didn't the SS just bypass the tank entirely?  It's not like it was part of their mission and it definitely wasn't going anywhere.  Leave a small detachment behind to deal with the crew once they get out of the tank to work on the tracks.

*********  END SPOILERS*************

I saw this with free movie passes.

Visuals: 8.0/10, very good, I enjoyed the Shermans vs Tiger battle (hand cranking that turret must have been a pain).  The firefight at the end was a nice spectacle, I'll leave it at that.
Plot: 6.5/10: It's not Oscar material, but I don't think they were trying for that.  Not bad for a buddy movie.  The dinner scene was uncomfortable and I guess that was the purpose.

Overall rating:  7/10.  I love tanks, and there's not too many movies about them these days, pretty simple.  I still kind of felt this was in the same league as Windtalkers a bit for some reason.

 Saw it over the weekend.

Pretty disappointed.  The combat scenes were decent up until the ending scene, which was BS right out of a Rambo movie. In no way at all realistic, any tank fighting infantry at night in WWII is a dead tank. Try looking through a tank gun sight or a vision block at dusk through dawn, you cant see shit.

The non fighting parts of the movie were garbage. The whole scene in the town at the Woman's apartment seemed forced. The killing of the German soldier wearing the US army jacket overly dramatic.

Give it a 5/10

I finally caught this today and I think the point is mostly missed by the people here.  its a condensed story of a virgin soldier losing his innocence in a 48 hour period.  ya, the girl part was somewhat forced but we had that same experience in Band of Brothers with the medic.  granted there were some continuity errors in the final fight but, Ive read enough to give it a pass as odder shit has actually happened.  thats where medals are given.  if someone watched a modern rendition of Audie Murphy's  brass balls in action without knowing the actual history you would cry bullshit all day and twice on Sunday.

The truth is often more dramatic and less politically correct than fiction. Today's Murphy would have to been abused as a child, shoot unarmed Germans, and the Nazis' would be caused by Global Warming. Not on a soapbox here, just saying many of the greatest heroes wouldn't be acceptable to a certain sect of society. Today everybody knows Che and nobody knows Audie. Why isn't he on Tee shirts everywhere? Guess I am on a soapbox afterall.

I have a suspicion the final fight was meant to evoke Audie Murphy.

Watched it this afternoon with the Bro, since my birthday parties tend to be overrun with nieces.  :D Bank's closed on Vet Day so he was able to meet me for a matinee to celebrate the holiday and my birthday early.

Every criticism I've read upthread I agree with 150%. Also the praises: I didn't care for any of the characters (except the Sarge), but I admit they were acting the hell out of the parts anyway. Everything actually involving tank action == great if not always realistic (final battle). Creepy seeing so many Empire vs. Rebel tracer rounds -- were they really that prevalent? I've seen color film (taken in color, not colorized) of WW2 action and that just doesn't seem true.  :o ??? Looked great but seems fake. No other modern post-Star Wars WW2 movie looks like this. Maybe it's supposed to be stylized like the maddened/maddening German chanting in the background when action approaches or heats up.

The dinner scene felt like PAADDDDDINNNGGGGGGGGG the film. Made worse by the uncomfort of course.

Who the hell was Jason Isaacs playing? Captain someone, I saw in the credits, but I don't remember any British characters at all. Was he playing the American captain giving orders in a few scenes?? He deserves an Oscar for that, if so, because I didn't recognize him at all. Or do I have the wrong guy? {checking imdb} Nope, that was Captain Hook / Lord Malfoy (and other British supervillains, heir apparent to Alan Rickman.)

I'm no expert but weren't there lots of different tracer colors? I've heard that some German tracer rounds burned yellow/green and others red depending on the type/caliber of weapon and where it was being used and that the US 30 and 50 ww2 cal tracer rounds burned orange. Maybe someone less lazy than I can wade through a few google chops and wiki pages to get the full details.

I do think there were some "red" Nazi shells from cannon rounds in the film (though I may be misremembering).

It was the utter prevalence of tracer shots that seemed so weird, though the green/red color division made it seem even weirder.

I would say it's a case of reality being unrealistic (real modern Vulcan cannon fire looks like a death ray, or it used to anyway, thanks to the tracer packs -- though I've seen attacks from Warthogs that didn't look like that), except I don't get anything like that impression from color reality footage. Not WW2, not Korea, not Vietnam...

I don't think the A-10's gun uses as many tracers (if any at all?) as your typical machinegun or especially a mini-gun on a Spectre.  Probably to provide more AP rounds to the limited ammo mix, the explosive ones flash when they hit, and the gunsight is computed anyway?  ???

Hm. Obviously the first video didn't have any tracers at all (until the end at night); but the others were interesting.

Also interesting: watching the tracers track the ricochets, especially the 30 cal. Just about every single shot spacked off the water at a low trajectory. They ought to show that in gun safety training classes.

Yes! Great videos Stagger. I imagine if the MG 42 was shooting at me, I wouldn't know what color the tracers were cause I'd be curled into a fetal position with my head between my knees and digging a hole in the ground with my ass.

I think the M1919 was loaded with mostly tracers.  Better for putting on a show, I suppose.  ;)

Really enjoyed it..more so than Private Ryan.

Yes it was over the top at the end but still a decent war film.

My sentiments exactly. My expectations were very low andI was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Not a movie guy - but I watched this flying back to the USA from Europe yesterday.

I agree with Star about this being one of the primary themes of the movie.  The other theme is the sheer disgust the US troops have about fighting child troops and a handful of adult fanatics when the war was lost.  Brad Pitt counters this in the movie by stating that "would you give up if it was your home?"

Ditto all of the tactics comments - the tactics of the infantry versus the Sherman was just nuts.

I have one more observation.  Why did the Tiger close with the Shermans?  Seems like it would fire and then reverse to keep the 3 Shermans from getting a tail shot on them.  Why charge to super close range?  Am I missing something?

Overall, perhaps a 7 out of 10.  It captured the angst at the end of the war and how hard it was to integrate a rookie with a veteran outfit.  The background scenery, the tanks, the shots of working the inside of a Sherman, the child soldiers ambushing tanks, etc.... were all well done.
