Maybe because I have an overly romanticized view of our Secret Service (thanks Hollywood) or maybe because I am just that naive but, I was surprised to read about this.
QuoteAn embarrassing scandal involving prostitutes and Secret Service agents sent to protect President Barack Obama on his visit to Colombia expanded Saturday, when the U.S. military said five service members may also have participated in the alleged misconduct.
The 11 Secret Service agents accused of soliciting prostitutes were put on leave and Obama offered regret over the incident overshadowing his diplomatic mission to Latin America.

I have been reading about that.
Weird - those guys are supposed to be pretty disciplined. Odd that a bunch of them would go out "partying" like that. Allegedly.
Though I will say that I was in DC like a year ago. Driving down the street was a blacked out SUV with lights concealed around it. Driving it were some 20-something chicks from the best I could tell.
I have no idea whose SUV or why it was out. It was an early Sunday morning IIRC. Given the article above, though, one does start to wonder if the incident I saw was somehow related.

You guys are funny.
The whole story is suspect to me. Isn't "I'm in the Secret Service" one of the best pickup lines ever? Why would they need hookers?
Why is this a scandal at all? Honestly, who cares?

From my viewpoint, the issue is that hookers are often used as bribes and 'introduction favors' by well connected criminals.
Who paid for these hookers? Are any of these agents now compromised? Anyone clone their sim cards while they were distracted?
Maybe plant a tracker or just read through their mail? Steal a laptop or tablet? These agents are just an outstretched arm
or two away from some of the most important public figures our Gov't has.
Those are some really good points, Stagger. The "honey trap" was always used to good effect by the Soviets, wouldn't surprise me at all to learn there might be something deeper to the story.

That's the downside, SDR. I couldn't care less what those guys do for fun in their off-time, but there is no off time when you're in a foreign country for work.
Hopefully they'll fix whatever is broken and this will all go away. The less discussion of the President's security the better IMHO.

There is if you work for the Secret Service. As others have said, who knows who these girls were or who they might be working for? Using sex as an intelligence tool is probably the oldest trick in the book. A camera or two in the right place and you've got someone blackmailing the presidential security detail. Not good. Is that what really happened? I don't know. But these guys have no business taking the risk.
I just heard a number of these guys got canned. Works for me.
More evidence - add premeditation to the scandal.
QuoteSecret Service officials planning a wild night of fun in Colombia did some of their own advanced work last week, booking a party space at the Hotel Caribe before heading out to the night clubs, hotel sources tell ABC News.
As first reported by ABC, the men went to the "Pley Club" brothel, where they drank expensive whiskey and bragged that they worked for President Obama. The men were also serviced by prostitutes at the club.

If sex is not a big deal, then there is nothing to blackmail anyone with it. Sex is a natural activity.
It's not the sex, it's the potential for opsec compromise. While these agents are humping away, probably drunk and unfocused, someone (one of the girls or even a plant among the hotel staff since this little trip was not planned in secret) could be going through their wallets, cloning their phones or planting virii on them (yes it's quite possible to infect a smartphone!) or just listening to the banter back and forth among the agents to glean useful tidbits. Hell, someone could steal an agent's CC# and then order kiddie porn.
Voice on Phone: "Care to explain that to your supervisor? I though not. Well, we won't tell if you take a few extra restroom breaks on such and such a day. Deal? Smart choice, friend..."

The guys in question were supposed to be secure. As in not compromised.
The hookers had potential access to phones, equipment in the room...errrm...intimate...knowledge of who was there.

Something is not quite right here.
These guys are humans. They're not all going to be married. They're going to meet new women. Eventually one of them will end up going home with someone.
There must be some kind of protocol when this takes place, whether it be locking your phone in a safe or something else.

Right. The "scandal" is a media joke. Meanwhile, the slow slip of South America from US leadership goes unnoticed by American media and public. It's a media joke because there are more serious issues that occurred that are being ignored by the press. It's really quite irrelevant to American national security that a number of federal officials and military personnel are willing to pay for sex and that some of those same people can be cheap. Is this really surprising to anyone who has spent even a few minutes in any of America's male-dominated gun cultures? Fire them. Reassign them. Whatever. It - does - not - matter.
White spokesman Jim Carney said the President's security was never compromised (http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2012/0419/White-House-defends-Secret-Service-director?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+feeds%2Fcsm+%28Christian+Science+Monitor+|+All+Stories%29 (http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2012/0419/White-House-defends-Secret-Service-director?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+feeds%2Fcsm+%28Christian+Science+Monitor+%7C+All+Stories%29)). So all of this media coverage is simply sensationalism; a foolish joke.
So what's being ignored? How about the unanimous call for the US to do more about drug demand instead of the failed policies in South America that have only made the cartels more powerful and violent? How about the unanimous call for the US to readdress its policies towards Cuba? How about the fact that we failed to secure a joint statement from the summit about how we are going to move forward together on regional issues? How about the fact that UNASUR and CELAC, led by South American states and not the United States, are taking the lead in formulating regional policy; making us increasingly irrelevant.
But we're not going to talk about the War on Drugs (and its attendant issues of violence, wasteful spending, racism, etc of the last 40 years) or reassessing Cuban-US relations in an election year. That's right, we have more important issues, like the fact that Secret Service agents and military personnel like to have sex with Latina women... ::)
Yes. The very first thing that the White House is going to announce is that the President's security was comprimised. Good grief. This issue is not who they wanted to bang. The issue is that they compromised the POTUS. I think you lost that fact in your rant against South American nations having an interest in South American policy. And for that matter I'm sure that the US status in South America is not any less today than it was yesterday. The calls for America to re-evaluate it's position on Cuba is not new. Frankly America needs to address the culture of drugs that we promote, while on the backside wage a "war". The United States is not irrelevant in South America and the billions of dollars we continue to send along with Federal agency/military support make that just a fact.
QuoteThe issue is that they compromised the POTUS.
No -- that's not an issue at all because they didn't compromise anyone but themselves. Usually when soliciting information from another party, it's done clandestinely; for example, without international media attention. The only people to gain from this event are those (1) willing to use to attack Obama during an election year, and (2) unwilling to publicly discuss the growing resentment against US policies in South America.
QuoteI think you lost that fact in your rant against South American nations having an interest in South American policy
And you clearly lost the fact that my "rant" was directed at the lack of media and political coverage of the failure of the summit because it's more important to talk about two dozen men willing to pay for a good time. This is an indictment of the media, not South America.
QuoteAnd for that matter I'm sure that the US status in South America is not any less today than it was yesterday.
Actually, it is -- which is why the US was on the political defensive and unable to form a consensus about two foundations of its South American policy.
QuoteThe United States is not irrelevant in South America and the billions of dollars we continue to send along with Federal agency/military support make that just a fact.
Where did I say the US was irrelevant. I clearly said "increasingly irrelevant" as evidenced by the fact that South America is on the verge of defecting from US policy
despite the " billions of dollars we continue to send along with Federal agency/military support."

How do you know that the POTUS was never compromised? The media coverage? The White House said so? The fact that Secret Service members in a foreign nation were willing to party it up while on duty is a serious matter. If the accounts are correct that the POTUS' agenda was openly availible to anyone in the room, that is a serious breach of physical security regardless if the opportunity was acted upon or not. Thankfully they just wanted their money and not something more nefarious. Lord knows it wouldn't have been the first time sex was used to compromise security or intelligence. How exactly is this an attack Obama issue? I think you might be a little paranoid. There are a myriad of reasons that those in disagreement with the POTUS could debate his positions and policies. The Secret Service potentially compromising his security is not one.
Should there be a greater public awareness to American foreign policy? Hell yeah. Unfortunately there are many who cannot name the 50 States or the three branches of government, let alone be knowledgable on the policy positioning between the United States and the Union of South American Nations. This speaks very clearly about the quality of news that we are presented and the priority that is given in educating the public about current events. The media is first and foremost an entertainment industry that's bottom line is to make money. Hence you get wall to wall coverage on the court cases like Casey Anthony or celebrity news like what is Jennifer Aniston wearing. South American foreign policy is not going to rate high on getting a 30 second story on the evening news. It won't even rate high on getting coverage on any of the political pundit shows. You will get long segments on the immigration border policy. Or the "War on drugs". Why? Because it's easy for the media to cast in a right/left spectrum. That in turn allows the pundits, who bring in the ratings and money, to be bombastic in their discussions. That sells. The Union of South American Nations policy coverage? Not so much. Is that right? Not in my opinion. I'd like for the average American to be more aware of what is being done by the government and why. That being said. Even if you did have the coverage you wanted just how unbiased do you think it would be? The supporters of the POTUS would spin one way and the detractors would spin another. The facts would be lost in between.
Facts are facts...these ladies held at the very least TS SCI clearances. My guess is that the had Yankee white Clearances in addition to TS SCI clearances.

Burn? I bet it would be like a flame throwing pipe cleaner dispenser. Stay away!
But that's what "gloves" are made for!!
Don't make me tell you my gonorrhea story. Again. No gloves could have helped me that day.
I don't recall your clap story.
You asked for it:
The first lovely lady I was ever with didn't care that I claimed to be a virgin at the ripe old age of 16. So, to prove it, I went to a clinic far, far away from where my Mom would ever find out - at 99th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in NYC, circa 1991. At that time the neighborhood was not the greatest, but I was a 16 year old horny dude and the gal was tan, tall and had splendid cans.
So I went in and asked them for the full battery. They kind of looked at me funny being a little white guy in a black neighborhood, but they didn't turn me away. Most of the exams were harmless, but the gonorrhea one involved a long thin glass rod rammed where the sun don't shine to get a 'fluid sample'...performed by a gigantic black male orderly. He was cool and warned me that 'it may sting a little.'
Well it certainly did! I could barely walk for a couple of days after but I did get my orange NYC Health Department 'clean card.' Limping into the gal's apartment later that day, she thanked me. But we didn't actually do the nasty until almost two years later!!
I will never forget that for the rest of my life. Just a few years ago I discovered that the way I was tested was 'the old way' that was phased out probably a mere months after it was done to me. D'OH.
And there you have it.
So the moral of the story is that Gus didn't get laid, but the payment of having a glass rod shoved into his schlomo paid off a few years later.
And this thread has nothing to do with the Secret Service anymore.
You know I guess I don't know if there's a moral to that story at all. Hey wait, there is...nice guys finish last. ...and now the investigation turns to a possible incident in 2011 during a trip to El Salvador.
QuoteSeattle channel KIRO-TV reported Thursday that, according to a government subcontractor who was there, agents and military personnel went to a San Salvador strip club where some of them paid for sexual favors in the VIP room. At least two agents, the source reportedly said, brought escorts back to their rooms.

I hope I never get to see what the dark innards of a 'San Salvador strip club' look like.
And things continue to get worse for the guys involved.
QuoteA woman who says she was the prostitute who triggered the U.S. Secret Service scandal in Colombia on Friday called the agents involved "idiots" for letting it happen, and said that if she were a spy and sensitive information was available, she could have easily obtained it.
The woman said she spent five hours in a Cartagena, Colombia, hotel room with an agent, and while she barely got cab fare out of him, she could have gotten information that would have compromised the security of U.S. President Barack Obama if the agent had any. "Totally," she replied when asked.
"The man slept all night," said the woman, who was identified by her lawyer as Dania Londono Suarez. "If I had wanted to, I could have gone through all his documents, his wallet, his suitcase."
