Title: Carrier Command Gaea Mission
Post by: Jarhead0331 on April 15, 2012, 06:42:18 PM
Did anyone else jump on the beta bandwagon for this one?  I splurged on Friday night and although the beta contains only limited game play, its pretty solid and definitely pays homage to the venerable classic.  I like the way its going.

There are two different "play & contribute" options.  They both get you beta access immediately.  One is $24.99 and will give you access to the retail copy from the BIS store upon release.  The other is $49.99 and gives you access to both the BIS release and Steam, and comes with the soundtrack...maybe some other worthless crap too.  I went for the cheaper one.  I don't need two digital downloads and, really, I've never cared for a soundtrack enough to pay extra money for it.

For those who never played the original, basically, it goes like this.  There's a map with islands and two sides fighting over control.  Each side has a "carrier" that is loaded with a number of AAVs, aircraft, infantry and drones.  You can equip all of the vehicles and launch them to engage in combat and capture and control islands.  Of course, each island held gives you access to additional supplies, resources, production, defensive abilities, etc.  The goal is to capture islands and sink the enemy carrier.  The beta has limited maps with up to 9 islands.  The release will feature random maps with up to 30 islands!  The beta also has the AAvs and aircraft implemented, but there is no infantry and no FPS game yet.  You can fly the aircraft (mantas) and drive the AAVs (walrus).  You can also control the carrier and use the tactical map interface.  The game looks good and runs very well.

If you liked the original, I think jumping on this one is a no brainer.  Be sure to watch the grogheads front page for some "official" content.

Agreed, some great fun if the graphics are any indication.

Looks interesting.  Is the environment destructible?  BF3 has ruined everything for me now if the environment is not destructible in a game.

I have been waiting for this for a hundred years (well OK, just twenty-four, but it feels like a hundred).  So jumped in...  Initial impressions are good....  looks like they are taking the old game and making it new...the right thing to do in my book...not trying some dumb re-work.

I really miss the genre of games from the 80s and 90s that mixed strategy and vehicle simulation.  I can think of at least four games that did this really well.  I even remember Micropose had a WWII pacific carrier simulation where you could set the strategy, then hop into a Hellcat.

Hopefully the new CC will revive that game genre.  Glad to see Bohemia has it, and is doing it right (at least so far anyway).

And I'm now downloading the beta (just like JH I went for the 25$ version).

That would probably be Pacific Air War 1942, which IIRC tied into Task Force 1942.

mmm...I'm out of strategy gaming for the time being - but I just wanted to say I had some serious love for Carrier Command of old.
