Announcement/Info (http://ageofwonders.com/age-of-wonders-iii-golden-realms-expansion/)
Just what I've been waiting for. In.
Nice. Fingers crossed that there will be a specially priced package containing the base game and expansion!
Considering how much I paid for it and how much I looked forward to it I've played this a shamefully low amount of time
I have to admit when I first picked up AoWIII I was put off by their trickery in roping you into their network in order to play online against other players however this is a really good game and well worth it. I'll probably be getting this expansion as well. O0 O0
Goblin RPG teams, Vomit monsters, Shit-tossing Monkeys, Topless Mermaids, and Hutt Toads.
Let the DLC begin! :D
^Hahaha!!
Ooops!
I meant, "Halfing RPG Teams".
For some reason I just assumed those were Goblins with the B-40 rockets.

SpaceSector's review (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2014/12/age-of-wonders-3-golden-realms-review/) is up. Sounds like this first expansion is definitely a hit (which seems to align with most folks' opinions). 8.0/10

Better Than it Was Before. Better, Stronger, Faster.
If you enjoyed Age of Wonders 3 at all, I highly recommend you add the Golden Realms to your game. In my eyes, it is a solid must have addition to a base game that has already been steadily improved by the developer. Golden Realms attempts, for the most part successfully, to resolve several of the issues I had in regards to victory conditions and building layouts. While the expansion adds a lot to the variety on offer, it is the new victory conditions and special locations that truly make it worth the asking price for me. The endgame isn't as drawn out, the choices are more interesting, and the game is more fun to play. The expansion removes some of my biggest frustrations with the base game and was able to reinvigorate my interest in the game series as a whole. Not too shabby an accomplishment for a relatively inexpensive expansion.
For those still on the fence about the series as a whole, it is best to still proceed with caution. I can say that fully patched and expanded, it is a much better game than it was on launch. Unit differentiation has been worked on, unit advancement is more interesting, and numerous other tweaks have been made. I'd like to see a little more in the way of leader class options and race differentiation, and recent dev logs indicate this is coming. Not all of my AI related concerns are completely solved, but it has come a long way.
Age of Wonders 3, now with its expansion Golden Realms, is at its core still a tactics oriented game that offers a lighter experience than a 4X game, and you have to be looking for something like that to really enjoy this game. If you are, you can't do much better than this game. If you're still unsure either way, keep an eye out in 2015 for my updated thoughts. By then, I fully expect the game to have added at least one more Golden Realms size expansion as well as numerous patches. The Frostling race and Necromancy are also both on their way, and I'm excited to see how they turn out.
I've been holding off on this...why, I'm not sure. From the above it sounds like it updates a lot of things across the entire game.Is that the case?
Do you have to create an account with them in order to get DLC?

Hells yes. More races YAY! And much more interesting ones than halflings, even. Looking forward to it.

I bought it about a week after I started playing AOW III. I like it. It adds a bunch of cool stuff such as new quests that give you empire-wide bonuses (be the first to become totally good/totally evil, be the first to build a megalopolis, etc). It adds a new way to win by controlling these magic portal/node thinges. I'm not exactly sure how these work. I think you get points each turn that you have an army occupy a node. If I remember you have to occupy 5 nodes for 35 turns or something like that. The AI gets very aggressive if you occupy one. Other empires are less likely to remain peaceful and random non-aligned armies will attack the node like crazy.
It sounds pretty game-changing and almost must-have. I'll probably get it before I start another campaign. Necromancers are the next DLC race due out IIRC.

GOG is offering it for $11.99 so I don't think so.

I created an account with them, but I usually don't log in when I play.
Got my stuff at GOG.
I never created one, because I figure.. I'm logged into Steam that's good enough.. but I guess I probably can't do MP without an account correct?
No idea.
I'm not even sure what multiplayer consists of. I got it solely for singleplayer since it's one of those grand strategy games that takes awhile to finish a campaign.

Not to purchase the DLC, no. You only need an account for MP action.

Where the hell is the expansion with the Undead? :knuppel2:
I'm glad they're focusing on PBEM first. There's enough variety to the game that focusing on additional functionality rather than additional content seems like a sound decision to me.
But then, I don't like skeleton porn either... :)
^I do. Where the hell is the Undead expansion??
We want undead. We want undead.

Lol
Pbem you say?
I may finally get to play out with gus, Md and Bob
Be glad to have you. Not sure I could suffer a PBEM game of anything, though. Did that with Civ III a few years ago with W8taminute. Took us about six months.

Ahem!
All are welcome, Huw.
Thanks chaps - definitely up for that as soon as Linux is supported. :)
Undead out yet? I'd even take word of a release date.
Hang on a minute, how would battles work in PBEM mode? Would they just auto-resolve?
^I think a few here have played PBEM and IIRC yes, they are auto-resolved.
Makes sense. Oh well, I shall have to crush you all with my strategic brilliance alone, then!
Is that the sound of a gauntlet being thrown down?
It has been haughtily, nay, disdainfully tossed at your unworthy boots, sir!
O snappeth.
lol - is the pbem function operational now, because if it is, we need to be stabbing each other and pulling beards soonish
Not sure, I've been hunkering down in my igloo waiting for the release of Attila TW. Haven't fired up AoWIII in a while.
Oi! Wait for the Linux release would ya? Unless you can get a game in before then of course. :)
oh yeah, forgot - they got an ETA?

Well the wording in that linked announcement is slightly ambiguous. It
sounds like Linux/Mac support will roll out in "a couple of weeks", but they might be referring to a beta release. Either way, I'm pretty hopeful that I'll be able to play very soon. :)
(Note for anyone wondering - yes, I am on record as saying that AoW3 was disappointing for me. I stand by that and still think AoW:SM is the definitive version. However turn-based fantasy 4X is severely underrepresented on Linux and I'll take what I can get for now. ;))
You fellas aren't going to have a throw down without me, are you?

never!!!
Awesome! Hurry up with the Linux then!!
Depends what you mean by throw down.
Face off versus as many people as can play at a time. It's a game about building up until you can take the other guys out.
Can't we all just get along? :(
You've obviously never gamed against me ;)
He's obviously never played Dominions...
How does it compare to Fallen Enchantress:LH ?
for me FELH is more 4x and magic with some combat
AoW is definitely more combat oriented
I second ucg on that.
Thanks. So more tactical really?
It's a race to the best units. Not sure what Golden Realms contains in the way of broadening things out though.

A succinct, but accurate, summary. Both games are fun, but they definitely have different focuses.

From what I've seen/heard, Golden Realms doesn't alter the formula to any significant degree. Am really hoping the Frostlings/Necromancer expansion does (if only so that lower-tier units will remain useful/not become obsolete so quickly).
Where is the damned Undead expansion?? WHERE

The latest entry takes another look at the Tigrans, the other race in the upcoming expansion. I'm fascinated by their Egyptian-style motif.
