I have created a Starfleet battles type game, its 2D ,turn based, and free! here is the link to the dropbox file
http://www.indiedb.com/downloads/hexwarrior228b
you can create as many scenarios as needed from the base game, this space battle game is a hexwarrior mod, mod and game are free
gameleaper, now you have my full attention. If you manage to create a turn based Starfleet Battles type game you will have achieved eternal glory! I promise you, in spite of Civilization Beyond Earth being released today, I will try this game this weekend.
Thank bbmike, try setting strength higher in new scenarios you setup, I set them for a fast game. its SFB type :) but not quite SFB , but fun and free
Cool! Keep up the good work!
Will-Do LongBlade, I think this engine really suits space battles.
its on indieDB.com now :) http://www.indiedb.com/downloads/hexwarrior228b they virus check and so on.
Gameleaper you truly are a busy bee aren't you? :)
Hi Huw, I like 2D turn based games, and I could only find a few around the net when I looked a while back, so I started doing what I would like to play, and I found there always one more little bit to do. really Im not a designer or artest, so I twiddle away at things, but people like you guys always give me help so Thanks to all
Well, I tried running this but I can't seem to move my units. I get the message that I've selected a unit but when I try moving it I can't. I must be missing something.

What I found Mike is you can only move the units one hex at a time by right clicking.
Thanks, WYBaugh, that was it. I saw that I could move 10 and was trying to move more than one hex.

you move one hex at atime because of opportunity fire from the A.I. glad you got it going! remember to releft click your unit just before fireing, and if you place more ships by pressing the "E" key set the strength higher so the ship can absorb more hits! I used one successful hit will destroy the ships already setup. also I would switch the red button second to bottom on the right hand side to on, to show the fireing range of selected ship.
one more thing, make sure your flagships stay with your shuttles, because the shuttles require a link to the flagships at the end of each turn to receive orders. if there far away they will soon run out of orders.
ig you press "E" to get into the editor , don't forget to press "E" again when finished.
A quirk is you have to left click your ship before fireing with right-click, you wont notice after your aware of it.
the flags can be set to smaller or transparent if you wished, making space more pretty :)
the range indicator is fireing range not movement. press each button on the right and get a description, but only one button should be on at at ime to see the description.
the game is easy to play, left click select, rightclick move or fire
I'm taking it as a bad sign that no one has said its any good or any comment on play :(
one last thing to mention you may not know without reading the help files, is flagships cant capture victory flags, flagships are designed for command, fighters are designed to take locations
I only took a quick look so I have no comments yet, Civilization Beyond Earth is too addictive for me right now. :)
Thanks for the time your deflecting from your other games bbmaike, just for you I've made a second module that improves on the last with more strength and more armor so you get a longer game and more shots more ships and more kaos , both modules included in v228
I do Hope vader isn't watching the stars today :)
one last thing is armor dosnt reduce, it is instead does more damage to a lesser armored unit, . if the final score is less than the defenders armor then str and moral can be effected(but the more armor the defender has, the less the impact). if a unit with anti-armour weapons fires at an unarmoured unit the anti-armor weapon wont be included in the attack. I needed to state this because I wasn't clear in the text files
The armor dose not effect a hit, it applies after a HIT! try it with a 100 anti-armor ship against a 1 armor ship. zero armor dosnt use the armor scores atall, so as to allow all sorts of ships
Ok guys thanks
just got it on indieDB

We've discussed before around here that, somewhat paradoxically, people are less inclined to play free games for various reasons. I'm certainly guilty of it, although I definitely would have tried at least one of yours by now if you supported Linux - especially Starfleet Battles! :)

I'm just not into that look of game. I'm a self professed graphics whore I'm afraid. If it doesn't look good, then I won't play it. Simple as that.
But I have way too many fantastically good looking games eating my time - and I don't even have time to play them.
I know you aren't a graphics guy. You're a programmer and I applaud your efforts and wish you well. Who knows...maybe one day you'll create a fantastic game that looks great and I'll stump up some money for it.
Good luck and I hope you either keep going with it either as a hobby and enjoying it as such or you turn it into a business (part time or otherwise) and make a few bob out of it.
Either way - I wish you well.
Huw its SFB type, its got some likeness the map ships 2D and space and so-on, but I like it. I think the measure of a game is weather you actualy like playing and I do I think. I will compile Linux versions for you Huw if I get to use a Linux Box, I cant use a PC to install Linux yet as I bought games with activations and it will mess them up, I know you can dual boot, but I don't really want to mess thingsup just yet.
Judge You are a real gamer, I know exactly what you are getting at, I like the new games too, but I like the simple old days of ZX81 and spectrums comadores , MS-Dos PCs,amstad CPCs(thankyou alan sugar), amigas , STs, old Atari, space invaders, PacMan, 2d Pool, galaxian, plenty of things I forgot. So I kind of like simple to learn rubbish graphics etc... Although I also liked Dungeons & dragons which led me to World Of Warcraft, I have to admit WoW is prob my fav game of all time.

If you would accept my advice, I would provide the following points:
-Use a modern graphics engine that comes with a decent UI. I think if you used a modern UI, many more people would try your game.
-Get to know a commercial paint program really well. Your not going to create a beautiful game without artistic talent, but even functional graphics could be much better.
-There are plenty of free game art resources out there, take a look.
You are obviously getting better with each project, but you need to devote more development time on graphics. There are tons of free resources out there, take advantage of them.
Thanks Swatter, I found opengameart.org for just such a thing.
Looks cool.

As for graphics..well I enjoy good graphics myself from he latest FPS\ Flight Sims to beautiful 2d graphics. However I have played some games that have so much gameplay and spark the imagination off far more than top quality graphic games that I'll always try a game rather than dismiss it due to lack luster graphics. Games like Dwarf Fortress, Aurora, Steam and Iron, Football Manager etc etc.
Your all dancing FPS game is like a blockbuster movie and a low budget indie game like a good book (hopefully).
Saying this my biggest graphic gripe in wargames is seeing a GIANT tank on a map that is supposed to represent a large number of tanks. I do hate these giant 3D Icons which for me wreck immersion far more than a counter with a military symbol on it
thanks TW! I like your viewpoint, any chance of attaching a screenshot?

that looks good! I shall go where Ive not beamed before :)
If you have Win 7 and it the game doesn't work follow this instruction...
"VB6 runtime doesn't work correctly on Win 7.
Install Msbvm50.exe (download from Microsoft) instead.
ST:STCS will then run perfectly."
thanks for the info and links!
Im planning a set of shields that recharge like starfleetbattles, keep phasers ready :)
