I was thinking about getting one of these for the wife for Christmas, but after doing a little research, it seems the pods for the original Keurig's do not work in the new 2.0 machines. The 2.0 pods are printed with a special (ultraviolet) ink so if you pop in a 1.0 pod (or a refillable generic pod), instead of a cup of hot joe, alls you get is an "oops" error message.
I'm a bit torn between understanding Keurig wanting to protect their product and getting my wife an easy, quick way to make a good cup of coffee. Keurig's patent expired a couple years ago, so they've got plenty of competition now. May have to look at some of those. Also seems some pod makers have already cracked the "DRM", but her coffee choices would be limited...at least for now.
My wife had one for about 2 days. She liked the new 2.0's carafe feature, but as soon as she found out she couldn't use the costco-sized box of K-cups her dad had just bought, it went right back in the box. She'll often use the refillable filter to make her own, but there was no way she was rebuying all those k-cups just to be able to make carafes
I don't get the carafe addition. I mean, wasn't single serve on demand the main selling point of these machines? Besides, the carafe is just a thermos that doesn't keep the coffee hot.
There has to be a way that you could save the UV printed part from one of the new K-cups and place it over a generic k-cup just before you pop it into the brewer. Take one of the 2.0 cups over to some hippy neighbor's house and hold it next to their blacklight posters while they light 'em up, then make a note of where the printing is.
Or maybe Star can take one with him to the next warehouse rave...
Keurig is about to learn the lesson of some software companies.

Just as the big software companies claim about true ownership of computer programs you cough up your gaming bucks for, so it goes for coffee: you don't actually buy the coffee, you only rent it for a while.
Goes for beer as well...

A quick google shows you're right. It's already been cracked. ;D
