Title: The Great Pendragon Campaign
Post by: Toonces on April 24, 2012, 02:00:37 AM
The year is 485 A.D.  You are in Salisbury, a county in Logres located in the south-central portion of Britain.  Uther Pendragon is the King of Logres, but his hold is weak over three of his most powerful lords- the Dukes of Cornwall, Caercolun, and Lindsey.  Fortunately, the strongest of them all, Duke Ulfius of Silchester is a loyal vassal.

Saxon invaders have established several small but warlike kingdoms on British soil.  Their raiders are a constant menace, and there is still a good chance that they will get together an army and attacke more cities and lands.

You are all young squires, 21 years old, on the verge of knighthood.  You have been training as a squire to your knight since you were 15.  You have learned a great deal, both in serving your knight and under the guidance of Sir Elad, the castellan of Vagon Castle and marshal to the Earl of Salisbury.

It is a warm, sunny day like many others during which you have trained in the duties of knighthood.  Under Sir Elad's guidance, you have just finished a long round of jousting practice against the quintain, a vertical post with a rotating horizontal arm attached to which is a shield on one arm, and a rope with a stone on the other.  At the conclusion of several rounds of jousting, Sir Elad gathers you all around him in a semi-circle to the side of the training grounds.  You stand there in your mud spattered armor, your horses tied to nearby trees, grazing in the nearby grass.

Sir Elad:  "Young squires, your time of training nears completion.  I have taught you many squirely and knightly skills.  I have taught you to fight with spear and sword, to ride and joust, to judge your opponent's skill by the manner by which he carries himself afoot and ahorse.  Now, as you approach the time when you will go out into the world on your own, there is yet another skill you must learn. You must learn to be able to speak of yourself, to announce yourself to your fellow Britons and knights, to describe yourself and your family to others.  Perhaps, young squire Godric, you would like to begin?"

Yes Sir Elad, thank you, I will begin.

I am Squire Godric de Pitton, eldest son of Sir Gerard de Pitton. Our family has pledged allegiance to Sir Roderick, Earl of Salisbury since the time of King Constantin.

As you can see, I am a tall barrel-chest fellow with a full deep voice. Keep my dark hair short and beard trimmed in the same manner of my father before me.

As this is the year of my 21st birthday I look forward to finally becoming a Knight so I too can lend my sword to the aid of my Earl and my Lord God in ridding our fair land of the Saxons who killed my father!

Sir Elad:  "Well spoken, Squire Godric.  Short and to the point, but with enough details that your audience will have a sense of what you are about.  I trust you will have many, many opportunities to serve our great Earl in his continuing fight against the Saxons."

"I see you other two are nervous to start.  Don't be!  I know that my punishments in the past have been severe, but you have proven yourselves as able squires and I believe we can spare the rod at this point."

Sire!
I am Maelgwyn, proud to be son of Cadgwyn. My people have faithfully served the True rulers of Cymbri since the Rome-Folk left us to save their own besieged lands. We now pledge our troth to the Noble Earl of Salisbury. As you well know, the Earl allows us great freedom to maintain the Old Ways as long as we do not shame him in the eyes of the Christ-folk. It is because of his strong patronage that I was able to join the squires here in Salisbury as the appearence of my eldritch eyes has since birth cause consternation among the lower noble-folk and my Druid uncles have been distrusted by those manor and townsfolk who have been splashed with the Church's water. It is in honor of both my father and my Uncles that I keep my lip-hair long and my chin plucked and I have the Woad skin marks of my otherwordly ancestors. I also carry the Charmed family Lance that is now mine to wield against the foes of Sir Roderick. Woe the Saxon who will not bow down before Him and swear fealty!

Apologies, Ser Elad.

I am Squire Dalan of Stapleford, son of Sir Hervis of Stapleford. We have a long tradition of allegiance to Sir Roderick, Earl of Salisbury.

I am long of hair because my father taught me that a man should focus on his training above concerns for his hair. I have tried to follow the same focus and regimen that I witnessed in him, and hope that I have come close to his example.

I have turned 21, and I look ahead to finally becoming a Knight as my father was. I wish only to serve my Earl and help find justice for the people as he sees fit.

Sir Elad: "Very well, young squires.  Now then, we have need for your talents...a small task for the good of the country.  The peasants have reported a man-eating bear in the west acres.  I have never heard of such a thing.  It's probably a rapid dog.  Even if it is a chipmunk, though, you must go and take care of it because they claim it is too dangerous for them to come and work the lord's fields."

Sir Elad slowly shakes his head.

"Now then, squire Godric, you shall lead the expedition.  Go to Imber and ask for Old Garr, the priest.  It is already noon, and Imber lies a half day ride away, so you may leave now and arrive this evening or perhaps tomorrow morning would be a more appropriate time to leave...what say you?"

Sir Elad, At the risk of seeming timid I must suggest caution. A bear has not been seen in these lands for many generations and I fear that there could be grave risk of offending certain powers if we do not prepare ourselves properly. This bear could be a favorite of one of the Old Ones such as Matunus to have survived these many centuries. We should seek council of those such as know the proper way to kill a beast who may be Fey or otherworldly. I can be most discrete in this matter and consult my Uncle later this afternoon. There will still be time to ride after that. Were this a wolf or even a Saxon giant we all should ride off to vanquish or die gloriously but when the Fey might be at hand 'tis a very different matter.

"Trust Maelgwyn to beg caution. Whatever is wandering the lands is a threat to the good people there. Is it not the job for a knight to help protect the people? I say we leave at once."

"When the foe may be from beyond the mists of this world then a few extra hours of preparation are no challenge to a man's honor. Neither are milk-skinned whelps who soles are more suited to the smooth stone inside the castles of their Pater-familias than the bite of living Cymric rock. I have said my words and will now wait to hear what Godric chooses as to his preferred time of departure as Sir Elad has placed him at our lead. If Godric keeps to his original desire then I shall prepare at once."

Sir Elad: "Now, now, young Maelgwyn, although your heart is in the right place I would not trust a mythical being to the care of your sword just yet!  I am sure this beast is nothing more than some pesky forest animal up to no good!  Now then, good hunting!"

With that, Godric leads you all on your first adventure!

Godric takes the lead on his rouncy, with nervous Maelgwyn bringing up the rear.  You have all of your normal traveling gear with you, your weapons and armor and some light gear on your rouncy, the rest on your sumpter.  The sun has just past its zenith as you turn northeast out of Vagon Castle, leaving the gate behind as you travel along Salisbury Main.  The track leads you among gentle, rolling hills lush with green foliage and full of birds and small animals.  Very shortly after leaving you see the old hill fort of Hambury on your right, little more than ruins overgrown with thorns and wild flowers now.  An hour later sees you at a crossroads, a poor dirt track crossing your current path running southeast to northwest.

You pause at the crossroads, gazing eastward from the crest of the hill towards ancient Stonehenge.  The structure stands tall and stately, dedicated by the giants many years past as a monument to the sun, stars, and ancestors.  It consists of five concentric rings and horseshoes of standing stones surrounded by a mounded ditch.  It is also the burial site for the first Pendragon, Aurelius Ambrosius, brother of Uther, your King, and you pause reverently to pay your respects.  Maelgwyn feels particularly moved by the old magic that still pervades this site.

Godric leads your party off of Salisbury Main northwest along the dirt path.  The road is rough and clearly infrequently travelled, but your healthy rouncies have no difficulty finding their way.  Several hours later you see the walled city of Tilshead ahead of you, a market for the local farmers, but quiet as dusk approaches.  Working your way around the city you continue northwest until finally you see the dense Blakemoor forest on the horizon, the sun setting gloomily behind it.  Your party continues slowly down the ridge into a valley at the bottom of which lies the small village of Imber, your destination.

You note that the village is large but obviously quite poor.  The fields around it are small and judging by the hides stretched to dry much of the income of the village is from hunting.  A small spring pond with an ox-driven mill lies to your right.  On your left you see an old but stately man watching you curiously but without fear from the doorway of a small cottage as you enter the village.  At your approach he begins walking towards you, seemingly unconcerned and perhaps even a bit amiable.

Old Garr:  "Hail young knights!  Welcome to the humble village of Imber!  I am Garr, the priest of this fine community.  Alas, we don't get many visitors...maybe you are here to attend my services in the morning?"

Mistress Alana:  "Don't be silly you old fool!"

A old, very plump woman in a dirty brown dress approaches from the same cottage in which Old Garr was previously standing.

Mistress Alana:  "Do you think these fine knights would come all this way to hear your babbling?  You can't even read!  They're probably here at the service of the Earl.  Don't you remember, you sent a messenger to the Earl some nights ago after that damn bear ate old Robinson's finest sheep!  Fine it was, and so full of wool I'll be warm this winter just thinking about him!"

Old Garr:  "Alana, watch your mouth.  God have mercy...Forgive my, um...lady friend young knights.  She's quite excitable in her old age.  Could it be you are here from the Earl to help with our bear problem?"

Godric and the others dismount and approach the old couple.

"Hail and well met Pastor Garr. Yes we are sent by the Earl to help your village with this bear problem.
I am Godirc de Piton and these are Dalan of Stapleford and Maelgwyn son of Cadgwyn at your service."

All three give slight bows from the neck as he is announced.

"We have traveled all this day though and would like to eat and rest the night so as to tackle this creature fresh in the morning.
Is there food avaiable? And maybe a place to refresh our mounts?"

"Yes, something for us and the horses would do nicely. We would also like to talk to this man Robinson, or any other who may be able to tell us more about this bear. Perhaps our dear Maelgwyn can determine whether or not this monstrous creature is a God of some sort before we have to deal with it..."

*raisies an eyebrow at Dalan*
We would be honored by your hospitality Pastor and... Good-lady. Yon folk of Imber may place their trust in those who stand before you. Dalan is correct- We would do well to glean any bits of helpfull retelling from those unfortunates who have lived to tell of their encounters with the bear. This will aid our preparations for the coming task. "

Old Garr:  "Aye, we were just getting ready to sit down to a bit of soup.  You all are welcome to join me and my friend as we sup.  Please, please, follow me!"

With that, Old Garr turns and leads you back to his cottage.  Mistress Alana takes her leave to finish her supper preparations while Old Garr leads your party around back where a small stable sits.

Old Garr:  "You may tie your horses up over yonder tree.  The grass is fat and green.  The stable's small, but it's clean and dry; no horses in there nor anywhere in this here village anymore.  You all should be comfortable enough in there for a spell."

You tie your horses up to the trees adjacent to the stable and then follow Old Garr into his cottage.  It is small, quite humble but clean and well-kept.  You all squeeze in at the table- it's a tight fit but you can all sit- and Mistress Alana serves you a thin porridge of barley and onions with water to drink.  Mistress Alana apologizes at the lack of wine, but you are all grateful for the hospitality, and say so, and Mistress Alana seems pleased.  As you eat, Old Garr questions you about the latest gossip in the city, as he hasn't been out of Imber in quite a long time or so it seems to you.  He explains that he has been the priest of the small village for several years, ministering to the two hundred or so local residents.  He can't read nor write, not unusual in these parts, but has memorized the latin verses he requires for his services and his community seems happy enough.  Over the course of the conversation you perceive that he has some nobility in him on his father's side, that his father was a rather forgettable knight whose name is not familiar to you.  The conversation winds down and you make your way to the stable where you sleep peacefully on dry straw and hay and await the coming morning.

Shortly after sunrise you are awakened by Lady Alana who invites you in to the house to break your fast on a lumpy oatmeal that tastes faintly of berries.  Old Garr enters the small room, stretching his arms over his head and yawning hugely.  Then he breaks into a grin.

Old Garr:  "I say, young sirs, but I guess today is the day!  No sign of ole Robinson but no matter.  I hope you have enjoyed your rest and our hospitality which we give freely, thanks be to God.  Now, if I may be so bold, may you grant your servant a request?

Back long ago, before you were born I would say, I was renowned across the countryside as the finest hunter this side of Salisbury.  Alas, I can't hunt anymore, what with these old bones of mine!  Still I surely wouldn't mind tagging along if you have a mind.  I know my way about these parts like the back of me hand, and I know a thing or two about the healing arts if that old bear takes a nibble out your backside!  What say you, can you spare a mount for an old man?"

Old Garr looks at you expectantly, hopefully...

Godric considers then says
"Yes we would welcome you as a guide as our own knowledge of this area is rather slim. You may use my sumpter as a mount fot this small hunt. Let us get started at once and maybe we can catch this "monster" still slumbering."

"Lead on, Godric. I am ready to hunt. I think it will be useful to have along Old Gar's woodlore, even if his eyes, ears, and bones are much gone now.

'Father' Gar, be advised, though, that we would have ye keep out of the way of the coming hunt as best ye can for we do not wish to deprive your hamlet of it's priest or your, err, lady friend of your company. "

To Maelgwyn (with a grin on Dalan's face the whole time): "I suspect it might be a good idea to try to strike it in the heart, Maelgwyn. I know that I would appreciate you putting the beast down before Godric and I have to try to fight it on foot."

To everyone : "So, where shall we begin, Pastor? Perhaps Robinson's lands, as that was where it was seen the last?"
Title: Re: The Great Pendragon Campaign
Post by: Toonces on May 04, 2012, 02:07:05 AM
Old Garr:  "Thank you very much young squires for inviting me on your hunt.  I'm sure you will keep me quite safe!  You have made a wise choice as you clearly don't know the first thing about the hunt!  Aye, didn't your master teach you the proper way to hunt bear?  I say!  Have you ever seen a startled bear?  I say!  Those two legs of yours are no match for his four!  Aye, you'll never catch the beast that way.  We'll all ride mounts, if you don't mind me saying so and you have a mind to, and I kindly appreciate your sumpter young Godric.

I saw some bear spoor over yonder woods and like as not that's where the old bear has got himself off to.  Let me gather me dogs and we can get started!"

Old Garr wanders off down the road a bit while the rest of you remove your armor and other gear, and strip down to simple hunting clothing and your weapons.  As you finish mounting your horses, laughing at your foolishness of hunting on foot, Old Garr strides up with a handful of local peasants and a small pack of muttley looking dogs.

Old Garr:  "These here dogs don't look like much, but they can catch a scent like no others in the kingdom.  These humble members of my flock will lead the dogs so that we may be free to chase this lumbering beast.  Now, before we go, ole Robinson said that this here bear is a wary one, with unusually large claws, so we'll need to be careful on our approach.  Might be best we split up.  I'll follow young Godric, you other two can work west of us.  Those there dogs will show you the way."

With that, you move off in a group to the woods.  Old Garr points out some likely starting points for Maelgwin and Dalan who move off in the company of several peasants and perhaps a half dozen dogs.  Old Garr and Godric, along with 2 peasants and 3 dogs, start a bit further down.  Garr points out some bear spoor on the ground and a faint trail through the brush can be barely made out.  All groups move into the woods.

0700

Godric:  Immediately after entering the woods the trail seemingly disappears.  Garr seems confused..."I know that trail was right around here!"  The dogs seem to have multiple trails, all 3 going off in different directions.  Godric rolls his eyes and follows the least ugly dog, having no better idea...

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn has much better luck, finding a clear trail through the brush almost immediately.  The dogs go together as a pack, straight as an arrow down the path.  Maelqwyn's horse trots behind the dogs and peasants, seeming to be happy about this turn of events and taking Maelgwyn into the deep woods.

Dalan:  "Bloody simple dogs!"  Dalan's hunt starts off as a joke.  One dog immediately sits on its haunches and starts licking its butt while the other two discover their mutual attraction and start an aggressive round of sniff the other dog's butt, followed by multiple attempts at mounting one another.  The peasant masters seem embarrassed by their behavior although, in truth, neither seems quite surprised.  Something tells you this isn't the first time this has happened!

0800

Godric:  Godric and Old Garr work in ever increasing circles, trying to pick up the trail.  After an hour of working through ever more confusing woods you see a tree that you are SURE you've seen before...

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn is making good time until coming to a ditch well-hidden in the underbrush.  Luckily, just before falling headlong into the ditch, perhaps hurting your horse or worse, you notice a shadow in front of you and are able to pull up short.  Although you can probably jump across it is clear the dogs and peasants can't and it takes the rest of the hour to find a safe way over.

Dalan:  The dogs, tired of chasing each other's butts, fall asleep in the shade of a tree.  The peasants, seeing the futility of trying to hunt with tired dogs, join them.  Dalan sighs and allows his horse to quietly graze.  As your horse grazes, though, you see a large pile of dung...bear dung.  You trot over to the peasants and dogs, give them a few kicks and get them to their feet.  The dogs get a good scent from the dung pile and just like that you are off into the woods on a very clear trail.

0900

Godric:  Old Garr:  "Over here!  Over here!"  Godric hurries over to where Garr stands and a clear trail leads into the woods.  You're sure you crossed this area several times and you can't understand how you missed such an obvious path!

Maelgwyn:  On the other side of the ditch now, Maelgwyn continues along the path.  Suddenly in front of you you hear a rustling.  The dogs are barking like crazy and straining their leashes.  You see something brown and hairy dash off through the woods and you quickly give chase.

Dalan:  Continuing along the trail you hear a rustling off to your right, as if something has been startled.  From the crashing and barking off that way, you are fairly certain that Maelgwyn's party is off that way.  Suddenly something large, brown and hairy darts through the woods in that direction and you get a good look at what appears to be a four legged animal of quite large size...

1000

Godric:  Godric hears the commotion off to his left but can't find a clear way through the tangle of woods either in front or off to his left.  Old Garr seems unconcerned, but unclear about where to go next.

Maelgwyn:  The brown animal is seen again, more clearly this time and it appears to be a bear!  Maelgwyn spurs his horse to a rapid trot, dashing through the woods along the path.  You pull out your hunting horn and sound it loud and clear- prey found!  At the sound of your horn the bear dashes off at a flat out run.

Dalan:  Maelgqyn's horn is clearly heard off to Dalan's right.  You spur your horse in that direction.  As you rapidly close on Maelgwyn's party, you break into a clearing in the woods.  From your right you suddenly see a bear break through the brush, Maelgwyn's noisy party not quite visible but clearly pursuing rapidly.

Melee round

Dalan is 2 yards from the bear.  The bear is hasn't seen Dalan yet and you feel you can probably get in a good, strong surprise attack before the bear can face you...

For the melee round: Dalan gets first attack, Maelgwyn/Dalan may attack in round 2, everyone can attack in round 3.

I'll take a swipe at it, then try to keep it from noticing Maelgwyn's approach by maneuvering away from his approach.

As I'm attacking : "Maelgwyn! I regret that if you do not get here quickly, I will be forced to slay the bear myself!"

Muttered underneath my breath : That is, if I survive long enough to do so...

Melee

Round 1:
Dalan charges the bear, but the bear sees Dalan coming and suddenly dodges out of the way at the last second.  Surprised by the bear's lightning move, you fail to pull your horse around quickly enough and drive your lance into a nearby tree, shattering it!  You disgustedly toss the remnant of your lance from your hand and pull your sword from its sheath.

Round 2:
Dalan:  Dalan swing his sword at the bear, aiming for its head.  Again your aim is poor, whiffing close to the bear's head but clearly missing.

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn emerges for the woods 10 yards away from the bear.  You lower your lance and charge but the bear sees your charge and dodges out of your way.

Bear:  The bear rears to its full height and strikes Dalan on his torso.  His right claw stuns you, drawing a deep gouge across your shoulder.   You begin to bleed profusely from your wounds, and in fact are a bit shocked at the amount of blood suddenly staining your clothes.

Round 3:
Dalan:  Bleeding profusely from deep cuts, Dalan spurs his horse away from the bear and quickly moves out of the bear's range.

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn rears his horse around and jabs the bear in the arm.  The bear shrugs the piercing off, but begins to bleed.

Godric:  Godric finally emerges from the woods, lowers his lance and charges the bear.  The bear, seeing the charge, swats the lance aside and then attempts to claw you as you pass by, but just barely misses.

Round 4:
Dalan:  Dalan spurs his horse behind the bear, attempting to sneak behind him for an attack.

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn again attempts to spear the bear, but the bear blocks the attack.

Godric:  Godric continues past the bear from his lance run, spins his horse around, and runs at the bear again, striking true.  The bear staggers from the blow and begins to bleed deeply from his chest where the lance has passed cleanly through.  As you pass the bear, you pull your lance free and gallop away, preparing to charge again.

Bear:  The bear seems dazed, and swings half-heartedly at Maelgwyn's spear, blocking his attack but doing no damage in return.

Round 5
Dalan:  Dalan, seeing the bear's attention fixed on Maelgwyn, charges the bear from behind and swipes mightily with his sword, striking the bear across his neck and back.  The bear staggers, and drops to one knee.

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn again stabs at the bear, finally striking the bear cleanly in the head.  Pieces of the bear's brains leak from the wound.

Godric:  With a shout, Godric charges yet again, and again strikes the bear through it chest, piecing its heart.

Bear:  With a ferocious roar, the bear swipes at Maelgwyn but comes away with a clawful of tunic, barely missing taking off his head.

Round 6
Bear:  Unbelievably, the bear gathers itself and stands againt to its full height.  Blood pours from his multiple wounds, while bits of blood, brain and bone leak from the back of his head from Dalan's severe sword strike.  One final time he swings at Maelgwyn, his tormentor, with all his might.  One after another his claws rip into your body, leaving deep gouges across your arm and chest.

Dalan:  Dalan, seeing his friend desperately wounded, grips the hilt of his sword with two hands.  Aiming at the base of the bear's neck, you strike with all your might.  The blade cuts cleanly through and the bear's head falls from its shoulders.  With a shudder the bear slowly collapses to the ground, dead.

Leaping from his horse, Godric runs to the aid of Maelgwyn while tearing a strip from his tunic.

"Maelgwyn! Are you still with us?!? Garr! Where is that old fool? Garr! We have a man in dire need of medicine!"

Trying to staunch the flow of blood from Maelgwyn's chest, Godric says

"Well this will be quite the story to tell your grand-children! I'm sure by then the bear will be at least 20 ft tall!"

and barks a harsh laugh at his own feeble joke.

"GARR!"

The large bear lies before you, headless, bleeding and dead.  From the woods to your right, Old Garr and several peasants emerge.

Old Garr:  "Oy what a fight!  What a beast!  Oh!"

Garr approaches and sees Maelgwyn sitting on the ground near the base of a tree.  He kneels to examine his wounds.

Old Garr:  "Aye young Maelgwyn these wounds are ugly but not serious.  You will be fine.  I am quite skilled in the healing arts, please, let me bind these for you."

From a small bag at his side Old Garr takes several bandages and poultices and begins binding your wounds.  The bleeding stops rapidly and as the adrenaline of the fight eases from your system you start to feel much better.

<Mechanics: Old Garr first aid: 14 (5)=S, 3 HP restored; M HP 14+3=17>

Dalan, seeing Old Garr's skill, canters over to Garr for dressing himself.

Old Garr:  "Rest here Maelgwyn while I take care of Dalan and we figure out what to do with this old bear!"

Garr binds Dalan's wounds as well.

<Garr: f/a 15(8 )=S, 3 HP restored; Dalan HP 20+3=23>

Maelgwyn falls into a doze in the shade of the tree while Dalan, feeling nearly normal, joins Garr next to Godric who has remained mounted this whole time.

Old Garr:  "Well, Godric, what shall we do with this old bear now?  You know, this bear's pelt would fetch a mighty fine price at the market, and we could have quite the feast on his meat!  Aye, I love the taste of bear!  What say you, what shall we do young sir?"

"Pastor, you and your village can have the meat to feast upon and the pelt to sell or mount as you wish. I only ask that each us can keep a claw from the these great paws as a small trophie of our first successful quest together. What say you Dalan?"

"Thank you, Garr." Dalan says while stretching the shoulder out a bit before turning to Godric. "I like the sound of that. A claw for us each."

Dalan walks over to inspect the bear a bit more closely, "Are they all this damn big? I must say, I don't mourn the scarcity of these creatures."

Dalan walks to the tree and crouches next to Maelgwyn.

"You didn't actually have to try to kill it yourself, you know. But if your strikes had not hit when they did, it might be me lying there on the ground. Thank you, my friend."

Old Garr:  "Why I thank you, young Godric!  We shall have a feast tonight in your honor.  You, Dalan and Maelgwyn will be our guests!  Bear!  Mead!  Wine!  Song!  This will be a feast to never forget!"

With that, Dalan and Godric attend to the bear under the supervision of Old Garr, who patiently walks you through the process of skinning and cleaning the bear.  After a fair amount of time you have the bear cleaned and cut into proper pieces, the pelt is safely removed and stored on Old Garr's horse while Garr and the peasants walk beside.

Dalan walks over to Maelgwyn and gently wakes him from his slumber.  Maelgwyn wakes sore, but feeling somewhat refreshed.  It is clear, though, that some bed rest will be needed and it will be several weeks before he is completely healed.

The three of you mount your horses and Old Garr and the peasants lead you back along a deer trail that leads to the road back to Imber.  You emerge from the woods and begin down the path towards Imber, a few miles away, as the sun begins its journey to the horizon.  Around a bend in the road you can hear a commotion but it is unclear what is going on.  Shortly, you round the bend and in front of you, perhaps 20-30 yards away, a group of three rough looking men are assaulting an older looking man in peasant clothes.  Several cows graze in the field to the right of the road.  The three men are wearing rough, dirty, worn clothes with odds and ends pieces of leather armor; one has a leather helmet while another has a leather tunic but is bareheaded and so on.  All three carry bows slung across their backs.  Two hold great spears in their hands, while the third's spear lies in the grass nearby so as to free his hand to sieze the peasant.

Old Garr:  "Robinson!  What is going on?  Who are these men?"

Robinson:  "Garr, young squires, help me!  These men are robbing me!  Please, help!"

Bandit 1:  "Stay out of this old man!  This peasant wants to use our road, he has to pay the toll!"

Old Garr:  "What say you?  What toll?"

Bandit 1:  "The toll to use our road!  We mean to have these here cows as our payment!"

Old Garr:  "Bah, away with you, you filthy thieves!  This here be the King's Road!  There be no toll to use it."

Old Garr turns to you and says, "Young squires, this is the King's Road.  You must help Robinson against these thieving bastards!"

Bandit 2:  "We said stay out of this, unless you fancy some sharp steel...could be we could use ourselves some nice new horses to go along with our cows..."

Bandit 2 and 3 turn to face you, spears more or less at the ready.  Bandit 1 continues to hold on to Robinson with one hand.  The bandits are 20 yards ahead of you, on the road.  Garr is to your side, away from the direct path between you and the bandits and Robinson.

Maelgwyn charges after Godric with a fearsome expression due in no small part to the sharp pain in Maelgwyn's ribs and shoulder from the pounding and shaking of his steed's hoofbeats. He couches his lance as he bears down on Bandit #3 and shouts out "Cigfrain fydd gwledd ar eich perfedd!".

Melee

Round 1:

Having chosen your bandits, the party charges, Godric leading the way against Bandit 2 with the other members singling out the remaining Bandits.

Godric:  Godric lowers his lance and charges.  The Bandit deftly parries your lance with his spear, though, and you just miss taking his head off.

Maelgwyn:  With a shout that few understand, Maelgwyn couches his lance and charges Bandit 3.  You misjudge the Bandit's evasion, though, and misses to the right.  The Bandit attempts to stick you as you pass, but his spear passes cleanly behind.

Dalan:  Dalan unsheathes his sword and charges Bandit 1.  The Bandit lets go of Robinson and reaches into the grass and grabs his spear.  He is slow, though, and as his spear is coming up your swing catches him on the top of his head, pealing most of his scalp away exposing his skull.  With a shudder he collapses to the ground bleeding profusely from the blow.

Round 2:

Godric:  Godric spins around and charges again.  This time your lance is true, striking the banding through the chest.  Blood gurgles from the Bandit's mouth as he looks at you sadly.  His eyes then roll back into his head and he slowly slides off the point of your spear and onto the ground.

Maelgwyn:  Maelgwyn also spins around and couches his spear for another charge.  However, just as you are about to spur your horse, Bandit 3 throws his spear to the ground and drops to his knees.

Bandit 3:  "Mercy!  Mercy!  I pray of you Sir Knight, grant your humble servant mercy!"

The Bandit bows his head and begins to weep softly, awaiting his fate.  Bandit 2 is alive and conscious but clearly severely wounded and appears dazed; he cannot defend himself.  Bandit 1 appears to still be alive but is unconscious and bleeding out as you watch.

Dalan hops down off his horse and starts towards the whimpering bandit.

"Mercy can be had for some honest answers. You don't strike me as being much of a smart group of lads, so perhaps you'd like to explain who is behind this little taxation scheme of yours? And while we're at it, exactly how long you've been at it, and where you're keeping the money? Unless you'd prefer these questions be asked by the locals you've been robbing blind..."

As he's waiting for a reply, Dalan remembers that he did just hack off the top of a man's head.

To Garr : "I suppose you probably should check on the one who's a little shorter now!"

Bandit 3:  <sniffling> "It wasn't no one's of ours ideas, sir.  We are starving.  We just need some food, aye?  We've been living in these here woods surviving on game and grubs and such, but there's been no animals to be had on account of that damn bear's what's been terrorizing everything...aye, I barely escaped with me life out hunting over yonder last week!

Maybe ye's be best out hunting that damn bear instead of lopping the head off some poor folks that just needs a little food to put in me belly!"

He looks at you reproachfully.

Meanwhile, Old Garr is examining the bandit missing part of his scalp.

Old Garr:  "This wound is deep and serious, squires.  I fear if this man doesn't get to a maester in a fortnight he won't live."

Maelgwyn looks down at the snuffling bandit from atop his horse.
"The bear is dead, as should be you."
*glowers*
"Many folk in the parts hereabout are desperate for want of sufficient food yet few turn to the baseness of robbing their own neighbors. Had you any honor you would have joined up with those who fight on the Saxon Marches to earn some favor for your kin or ply your lowly banditry among those villages to the far east where the Saxon merchants now transport their wares. You'll not get quarter from me. Best ye can hope for is that our party's leader spare ye as he follows the ways of the Churchfolk. I've heard that it can be a boon for them to forgive others their wickedness."

Maelgwyn gently nudges he horse a few paces further to where Old Garr is tending to the bandit with the headwound.
"This one here I'd just as soon leave for the familiars of the Morrigu to feast on same as the expiring one that Godric spitted"
At this moment several large ravens in the nearby trees start to squawk loudly and flap their wings.
"Alas, I realize that you others may have differing thoughts on this. As he is naught to me, I bow to your wishes."
The ravens' cries die down to an occasional caw. They shift their gaze to Bandit#2's still form.

"Pastor Garr, I think it would be best if you had some of your village folk take that man to the aid he requires as you probably know the closest available healer to this place. As for this one", pointing to the still form of Bandit #2, "You will see to it that he gets a proper Christian burial. Let God decide his fate from there."

Godric dismounts and strolls over to Bandit #3 slowly drawing his sword

"I think, Maelgwyn, that we will let this wretch live today if he promises to leave this area for good. What say you welp? To disagree or return would have dire consequences for your health."

At this Godric places the blade of his sword against the man's neck where it meets his shoulder.

Bandit:  "Aye, aye, I won't be bothering these here folks no more, sir."

With that, the Bandit gets to his feet, glances at you warily, and then runs back into the forest and is rapidly lost to sight.

Old Garr:  "We better get these two into town soon.  Jacob, Henri, come help me."

Several peasants move off into the woods and put gather materials to make crude litters for the two injured bandits.  The bandits are placed upon them and, finally, the entire group continues to Imber, arriving at the village as dusk is approaching.

Old Garr:  "Oy!  Oy!  Everyone, come lookie here!  Look at what these young squires have done!"

From all around, folks begin to spill out of their little cottages and gather around.  Soon quite a commotion begins as the villagers come to realize the bear has been slain.  They gaze at the pelt which Garr proudly displays, speaking highly of your exploits."

Old Garr:  "...And then Dalan there hits that old damn bear on the head with his sword and takes his head clean off!  Woom!  Like that he did!..."

The villagers are overjoyed and insist you stay for the feast.  While they congratulate and thank you profusely another group quietly removes the bear meat and takes it into a large kitchen and mead hall where it is prepared.  The sun sets and a large, raging fire is built up in the village square.  Young children run around chasing each other with sticks, taking turns being "knights and bears" and re-enacting your fight over and over again to your amusement.  Meanwhile, the bear meat is served on large skewers running with grease and general tastiness and you all agree that it is the finest bear you have ever tasted.  A cask of mead is opened, perhaps one of the very few the village has, and everyone drinks to your health, including Old Garr who is clearly having the time of his life.  You all are humbled by the graciousness of the villagers and you are overwhelmed by their gratitude.

Well after midnight you make your way back to Garr's stable and you sleep the sleep of the just.  Too early the sun rises and the crowing of a rooster wakens you all.  Old Garr invites you into his home yet again for a breakfast stew of roast bear with some turnips from his garden in a thin barley soup.  At the conclusion of your meal, you make your way outside to say your goodbyes to Old Garr and the handful of villagers who show up to see you off.

Old Garr:  "Well, before you head off, I guess I needs to know how you want to dispose of those other two rascals we brought back with us.  The maester from over yonder village dressed their wounds during the celebration last night.  They're pretty beat up, but I reckon they'd survive long enough to travel with y'all back to Vagon, if you want to present them to the Earl for justice."

Old Garr: "Well, I didn't want to say anything, but it did seem a bit odd lettin' that fella go and all.  Usually you sirs always haul 'em away to spend a lil' time in ye ole dungeon.  Still, you're still young squires.  I suppose your master won't bother himself too much over a couple of good-for-nothin's as these here rascals.  Might be you have to empty a few chamber pots around the nobles a bit, though....ha!  Noble chamber pots!"

Old Garr starts laughing to himself.  You can tell he is trying not to, but the thought of you explaining your letting go one bandit while bringing the other two in clearly is too amusing to hold in...

Old Garr:  "I can always hold 'em here, have 'em till fields or somethin' for a bit.  Little cow shit might humble 'em a bit and who knows, earning a bit of honest coin might bring 'em into the Lord's grace...."

After a long deliberation and looking a little sheepish Godric says
"Well Pastor I think it might be best for all involved if you were to make these two work off their penence here for your village as these fine folk are the ones who've been wronged.
As for the other one..... well... I'll figure something out..."

When the others have drifted slightly out of earshot Maelgwyn turns to Godric.
(quietly)"This 'embarrassment' of ours is still only a short ride away and on foot. He will need at least another hour to make it to the village. As I have made no promises and am not bound in my actions *quite* the same way you are I can be off after him and put to rest this matter quickly. Afterwards we needs never speak of it again..."
Maelgwyn look Godric directly in the eyes.
"You needs not allow or disallow it. Thus no blame on shall fall on you. If you choose to rejoin the others without another word I will be off. I can make my return before the next mealtime."
He waits to see what Godric will do.

Godric steadily returns Maelgwyn's hard gaze and places a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"I am will to bare full responsiblilty for this.... transgression. I am confident that God will judge the miss guided sole and myself fairly. There is no need for any further actions in this.
Come, let us feast with the others and enjoy this night."

With that, the three of you bid goodbye to Old Garr, and the villagers of Imber who have seen you off.  You note that Old Garr and some of the villagers have filled your saddle bags with a noontime meal of cheeses and (stale) bread, and a bit of mead left over from the previous night's festivities.  You feel overwhelmingly good about the entire experience, and it hardens your resolve to serve your knights and your good Earl to the best of your abilities.

The ride back to Vagon Castle takes the better part of the day.  You arrive back in triumph in the late afternoon, having stopped for a time to enjoy your mid-day snack and enjoy the peacefulness of the countryside and reflect on your adventure of the last day or two.  You arrive to the foot of the castle and you recognize Sir Elad sitting close to the castle's entrance upon his chestnut rouncy.

Sir Elad:  "Hail and well met, squires!  I am glad to see you back, although you, Maelgqyn, look a bit worse for wear!"

Sir Elad chuckles quietly to himself, although you note that he looks at Maelgwyn with concern over his wounds.

Sir Elad:  "Please, follow me into the castle."  <turns to his squire at his side>  "Fetch the maester for Maelgwyn, and then get the cooks to rattle up some venison and potatoes.  I imagine our young adventurers have worked up quite an appetite.  Also, have Jorge open a new cask of that red we received last month...we'll see how that vintages suits a good tale!"

You follow Sir Elad into the castle.  Stable boys take your horses from you while younger squires and pages from court remove your gear to the armory.  Sir Elad leads you into the meeting hall, a nice fire burning in the large hearth at the end of the hall.  As you sit down around the table, servants begin to place roasted meats, potatoes, onions and cold cheese in front of you.  Jorge and another youngster bring large flasks of mead and goblets of a fine red wine as well.  The fire is warm and a few of the notables from the court have gathered in the hall to hear your tale.  It is not crowded, yet, but you can sense an eagerness from the handful present to hear of your adventure.

Sir Elad:  "So, squires, tell me of your adventure?  How do things go in Imber?  What happened to you, Maelgwyn?"

"We were successful, Sir Elad. It was indeed a bear charging about the wilderness out there which was finally dispatched by my sword. Would not have been possible had Maelgwyn's charges not distracted it enough to let me at it, and it was coming for me before it ended up ripping in to him. We left the remains of the beast with the locals. They could use the meat and coat, and I scarcely fancied hauling that monster back here anyway.

We also encountered some petty thieves down the road, but we took care of them as well."

Maelgwyn looks at first at Godric and then at Dagan. He swallows the bite of food he had been chewing and clears his throat:
"...More like uncouth beggars, they seemed. They'll cause no further annoyance to passersby with their whining for undeserved handouts."

Sir Elad:  "Very well.  You're not the first to report groups of beggars, thieves, and others of questionable motives on the King's roads.  We will report this to the Earl at the feast this evening.  In the meantime, you all go and change into appropriate attire for tonight's festivities.  We shall meet at the Great Hall at the hour of eight.  Now, get to it!"

With that, Sir Elad bids you farewell and leaves you to your food and drink.  Unaware that there was to be a festival this evening, you quickly finish your meal, drink your wine and then hurry along to your quarters to bathe and change into your finery.

Time passes quickly.  You are clean, your hair properly combed, and you are wearing your fine clothes.  A maester attends to Maelgwyn, changing his dressings and binding his wounds more properly.

Maester Alan:  "Now, Maelgwyn, you shall need to take it easy tonight!  I say, a proper bout of dancing will rip these bindings right off of ye!  I can tell by looking at you that you're a rambuncious one, but I tell you, no dancing!"

With a chuckle, you bid the maester and others a good evening and are led by several pages to the Great Hall where Sir Elad awaits.

Sir Elad:  "Now boys, this is your opportunity to demonstrate your finer points of nobility.  Mind your manners!  The Earl may invite you to speak with him- stand upright and tall, and make your impression.  You will likely sit towards the rear of the guests.  Enjoy yourselves, but do not make a spectacle!"

As Sir Elad is speaking with you, a rather portly man approaches your group from inside the entrance to the Great Hall.  He arrives just as Sir Elad is finishing his talk with you.  You notice that he is wearing a fine brown robe laced in satin.  He wears a fine gold chain around his neck, made of interlocking shields with ornate devices.  Altogether he strikes you as a dignified, somewhat well-to-do member of the court.

Herald Jon:  "Why Sir Elad!  It is a pleasure to see you, sir." <bows slightly>  "Did you hear about those bloody Saxons that assaulted the south coast again?"

Sir Elad:  "Now, now, Jon, not tonight.  There will be plenty of time to discuss military matters later."

Herald Jon:  "Of course, sir, my apologies."

Sir Elad:  "No reason to apologize, Jon."  Sir Elad turns to you all.  "Maelgwyn, Dalan, Godric, may I present Jon, the Royal Herald for Earl Roderick."

Herald Jon:  "Pleased to meet you young squires.  I heard a bit about your exploits in Imber.  I say!  You'll have to tell me about that bear sometime when we are not quite so busy.  Speaking of which..."  <turns to Sir Elad> "...it is time for you all to enter.  Please follow me."

Herald Jon turns and opens the door to the Great Hall.  Sir Elad follows him, with the three of you a respectful distance behind Elad.  You enter through the doors into...into complete bedlam!  It is the singular loudest, rowdiest, and largest feast you have yet experienced.

The Great Hall stretches before you, seemingly forever, but in actuality probably a couple hundred feet.  The ceiling towers above you, girded by stiff wooden beams into an arched roof.  At several spots, large hearths burn logs creating a great fire and lighting the hall periodically along the walls.  Several long tables extend the length of the hall, all filled with laughing, loudly talking men and women in fine dress.  The tables are heaped with mead and wine, candles sit in long rows at one or two foot intervals in the middle.  Trays of various appetizers, olives, bread, onions and such are scattered about.  In between the tables, serving girls refill goblets and cups, serve renewed platters of food, and in general run around keeping the guests full of drink.  As you are taking it all in, you feel a rustle at your feet.  Glancing down you see a blur a black- some sort of cat- followed almost immediately by a brown and white beagle, barking vigorously.  Just as you regain your footing a glimpse of pink satin in blonde pigtails bulls through your party, laughing and giggling before running off after the dog.

Herald Jon murmurs unintelligibly to Sir Elad and then makes his way to the other end of the hall.  You watch him and see that he stops and bends to speak into the ear of a man sitting there.  The man is dressed very fine, in a great black and silver coat, lined with white satin.  A gold belt around his waist holds a longsword in a jeweled sheath.  His bright eyes linger on your party a moment as Jon speaks to him before looking away to the feast in front of him.  He speaks a word to Jon and gestures gently in your direction.

Herald Jon stands and faces you down the hall.

Herald Jon:  "I present, Sir Elad, Marshall of Castle Vogon!"

Sir Elad quietly gestures to you to follow him as he makes his way to the Earl.  Your group walks up the center of the hall.  Despite the seeming chaos at the adjacent tables, the guests make room for you to walk comfortably between the tables to the Earl's seat.  He sits on a slightly raised platform, facing the length of the hall, a table in front of him.  Two gentlemen sit to either side on slightly lower seats.

Sir Elad:  "Your Grace."  <bows>

Earl Roderick:  "Sir Elad, how nice to see you tonight.  I'm glad you could enjoy our festivities."

Sir Elad:  "Of course, your Grace.  I never miss a chance to taste the northern mead!  Your Grace, may I present to you Squire Godric, Squire Maelgwyn, and Squire Dalan."  <The Earl looks at you appraisingly>  "These young squires have been in the service of three of your Grace's knights from the outlying lands.  They have been under intense training by both myself and Sir Amig."

Earl Roderick:  "Ahhh....Sir Amig, that old warhorse!"

Sir Elad:  "Yes, your Grace.  You may recall that the villagers of Imber were complaining of livestock gone up missing or slaughtered in the surrounding woods?  Well, I sent these squires out there over the last few days and they took care of it."

Earl Roderick:  "Indeed?"  <Looking at you> "Well, now, perhaps you can tell me a bit about your adventure in Imber?  How is Old Garr, anyway?"

"Your Grace. I'm not certain that there is much to tell. The people in the area were having problems with a large bear, and Sir Elad sent us to deal with it. We eventually tracked the bear down with Old Garr's help and slew it. If you don't mind my asking, your grace, how long have you known Old Garr? He seemed to be an...interesting sort."

Earl Roderick:  "A bear, eh?  Aye...that would explain it."

The Earl looks pensive a moment, as if thinking, then shakes his head.

Earl Roderick:  "Old Garr and I go way back.  He is a good man, very pious.  I make it a point to try to know all of the main people in those villages under my care."

Earl Roderick turns to the rest of you.

Earl Roderick:  "I can see that you all are humble squires of few words.  Humility is a virtue; I admire it. It shall serve you well in our Lord's service."

Earl Roderick makes a slight, almost imperceptible gesture to Sir Elad.  Sir Elad bends down and the two have a brief, unintelligible exchange before Sir Elad straightens again.

Earl Roderick:  "Well, Godric, Maelgwyn, Dalan...please, enjoy yourselves this evening.  I will be expecting big things from you all in the future!"

Sensing your dismissal, you murmur your thanks to the Earl, bow, turn, and make your way to the back of the hall.  Sir Elad guides you to seats towards the back of the hall.

Sir Elad:  "Now then.  The seats closer to the Earl are reserved for the knights who serve his grace.  You shall sit back here.  Enjoy yourselves; you've earned it!  Please, mingle and get to know your fellow citizens.  I shall join you before we retire for the evening."

With that, Sir Elad takes his leave to the front of the hall at a place of honor nearby the Earl.  You are served quite a feast of various meats, cheeses, mead and wine.  It is spectacular.  You notice that finer cuts of meat are served to the knights at your fore, but you are not offended as your fare is still quite tasty.  The gossip around you seems to center on a recent invasion by Saxon raiders on the east coast of Britannia.  You think you hear that Uther Pendragon has detached knights to deal with the invasion, but you are unclear of the status of the assault and defense.  Being of few words, you do not examine the folks around you closely and therefore you do not gain much more of use from them.

Several beautiful women circulate through the hall.  You gather that they are ladies in waiting, courtiers, and general members of the Earl's court.  Clearly some are available, although with all of the excitement none of you feels particularly compelled to make any advances and, instead, enjoy your food in drink and retell your recent tale of adventure to one another and those in your immediate vicinity.

After an hour or two, the Earl calls for silence in the hall.

Earl Roderick:  "Now then, all, hear me!  As you know, the bloody Saxons continue to plague our great land!  As such, I am of need of additional knights to serve my kingdom.  Who, then, shall propose candidates for knighthood?"

Sir Elad rises.

Sir Elad:  "Your Grace, I have nominations.  I nominate squires Godric, Maelgwyn, and Dalan.  As you know, they recently served your Grace in Imber where, through great bravery and skill defeated a monstrous beast in the service of your Grace, freeing the people from danger and allowing their properity!  Further, through selfless devotion to your Grace they served your Grace's justice upon the King's Road, vanquishing three ruthless bandits and converting two of them to the Lord's service!  I submit to thee, your Grace, that these three make worthy addition to your Grace's service!"

Earl Roderick:  "Very well, Sir Elad.  Squire Godric, Dalan, Maelgwyn, do you understand what it means to serve under the oath of knighthood?  Do you take such an oath freely and with clear mind and conscience?"

Of course all of you nod your assent, somewhat taken aback by this sudden turn of events.

Earl Roderick:  "Aye, then it shall be so.  Retire to the chapel and spend the evening in prayer.  Come morning, we shall submit the oath of knighthood to thee."

The rest of the feast occurs is a daze as you are overwhelmed by this turn of events.  After the feast you retire to the chapel.  A holy priest conducts you the the alter where he guides you to kneel and pray to your Christian- or Pagan- god(s).  You spend the evening in the candlelit hall, praying and struggling to stay awake!  As dawn's rays enter the chapel's windows, pages come for you and guide you to your quarters where you change into your finest armor and swords.  After changing, you are immediately conducted back to the chapel where, now, the Earl, Sir Elad, and numerous knights of the Earl's service await.  They are all dressed in gleaming chainmail armor, guilded and jeweled swords, and you are awestruck by their presence.  The pages guide you to the alter where the Earl awaits at the center of the aisle, seated at the raised alter upon a throne.

Herald Jon:  "Dalan, Maelgwyn, Godric, come forth and kneel before the throne."

The three of you come forward and kneel before Earl Roderick.  The pages take each of your swords and spurs and put them aside.

Herald Jon:  "Be it known to all men that I, Roderick, am minded to raise Dalan, Maelgwyn, and Godric by virtue of their honor, loyalty, valor, and skill at arms to the high rank of knighthood.  Dalan, Maelgwyn, Godric, do you swear and acknowledge Roderick to be your true and lawful liege?  Do you also swear fealty to Uther Pendragon, to defend and obey him until he depart the throne, or death shall take you?"

You all state your affirmation.

Earl Roderick rises.  "Let this be the last blow you receive without just recourse."

Earl Roderick takes his sword and hits each of you on the shoulder firmly.  You then kneel before the Earl, palms together and upraised.  Earl Roderick places his hands over each of yours' in turn, after which Herald Jon states the following:

Herald Jon:  "Each of you repeat after me- 'I do solemnly swear and pledge my sword to Roderick, my liege, to defend and obey him until he depart his demesnes or death shall take me, and to uphold the honor of knighthood."

<The Earl awaits each of you to repeat the oath of knighthood above...>

Maelgwyn lifts his head and squares his shoulders. He looks at Earl  and takes a deep breath.

As Sir Godric stands, the onlookers break into cheers.  Your fellow knights come up and congratulate you, shaking your hands and pounding you on the back.  It is quite the spectacle.  As the congratulations wind down, you make your way outside where Sir Elad draws you to the side.

Sir Elad:  "My fellow knights, my heartfelt congratulations.  I wish we had more time to celebrate, but unfortunately duty already calls.  The Saxons are invading the south.  King Uther Pendragon has summoned his armies to meet this threat, and the Earl leaves shortly to meet the King in Sarum.  I will see to your armor and weapons and have the stable boys groom your horses for the journey.  You have been training for this day all your lives.  I know you will not let me, nor your Earl down.  Now, go, eat and drink.  You leave in the morning."

Summer 485

Morning comes far more quickly than you would like.  Groggy, slightly hungover, you gather yourselves and meet in the hall to break your fast on oatmeal with tender venison strips left over from the previous evening.

A serving girl reaches over Maelgwyn's shoulder to refill his wine cup, apparently deep in conversation with a girl out of sight behind the three of you...

Girl 1:  "It's so terrible!  I heard that a thousand saxons landed to reinforce King Hengest!  He's the devil's son, that's for sure."

Unseen girl:  "I'll trust Prince Madoc to take care of us.  He's handsome enough, and he talks boldly enough.  But the truth will depend on how he fares in battle, of course."

Girl 1:  "Well, I'll say it's too bad he's illegitimate.  No bastard will automatically inherit.  It'll be difficult, you can be sure, unless his glory is truly great when the old king dies."

A grumpier, deeper female voice breaks in..

Agatha:  "Listen darlings, it'll take something monstrous to get rid of tough King Uther.  Madoc will have to be waiting a long time for any inheritance!"

Girl 1:  "But don't you think it's bad luck to talk that way?"

Unseen girl:  "Say, Agatha, did you know that Merlin has gone away?"

Agatha:  "Well, he comes and goes at his will."

Unseen girl:  "Yes, but he is gone again, and at such a time..."

As the women move away down the table their conversation fades into the din of noise of other knights eating their morning meals.

A shuffling next to you draws your attention.  A lean knight in slightly worn armor slides next to you.  You vaguely recognize him as a knight of importance in Earl Roderick's service, although his name escapes you.  He looks at you, trim black beard and short black hair, somewhat gaunt face, and black, no-nonsense eyes...clearly not one to be trifled with.

Sir Lycus:  "Sir Dalan, Sir Godric, Sir Maelgwyn.  Good morning.  You may recall me, my name is Sir Lycus, advisor to his grace Earl Roderick."

Dalan looks up rather groggily from his meal, regretting the last hour or so of drinking from the night before...

"Sir Lycus, it is good to have you here at our table."

"Hail and well met Sir Lycus! You'll have to excuse my friends here.... to much celibrating last eve for their constitution."
Though looking at the bags under Godirc's eyes you could tell he did well with the merry making himself...

"Bore Da, Sir Lycus. We newly-knighted are at your service... " Maelgwyn ruefully glances from Dalan's unusually pale visage to the dark circles under Godric's eyes while stifling a rebellious rumble in his own stomach.

".. more or less."

Sir Lycus: "Well met.  Aye, we've got quite the mess on our hands, no?  Damn Saxons!  Curse them!  You sirs have right come along just in time.

"We're going to assemble an army soon.  Sir Madoc, Uther's bastard heir, is calling to arms now.  I hear rumors the army's to assemble in Silchester, out yonder a day or two down the road, but Sir Madoc should tell us either way later.  You've heard that we're to assemble in yon yard at noon's bells?  Well, I suppose we'll find out one way or the other then.

"The Earl will be there, for sure.  He has honor.  Damn other nobles though...ack!  Can't trust 'em no further than I can throw 'em!  Several of Uther's vassals haven't answered to call, damn them to hell!  So, we may be a bit shorthanded, eh?"

A knight across the table clears his throat.  You remember him from last night's festivities, although his name escapes you as well.  You seem to remember drinking a toast or three with him, as he and his companion were also recently knighted...

Sir Luke:  "Sir Lycus, what is this we hear of Merlin?"

Sir Lycus:  "Well, Merlin is absent because he is so exhausted from using so much magic last year to help King Uther win a victory in the Battle of Damen.  But the king has promised to help Duke Ulfus of Silchester."

Sir Luke:  "Duke Ulfus?"

Sir Lycus:  "Aye, Duke Ulfus.  What, don't you know who the Duke is?  Good lord, man, don't they teach you young squires anything anymore before you are knighted?  Duke Ulfus of Silchester is advisor to Uther, keeps him informed of what is going on in Logres.  Anyway, mages must sleep when they use their powers to such great extent.  <Sir Lycus pauses in thought>  Ah!  The king is so impetuous without the magician's guidance....I hope he is not acting too hastily!"

Another man in robes who you do not recognize interrupts your conversation and leans over to whisper in Sir Lycus's ear.

"Sirs, excuse me, but I must attend to the Earl.  Well, then, I'll let you get to your meal.  We'll meet again in the yard in a few hours.  Good day."

With that, Sir Lycus gets up and follows the robed man out of the hall.  Since your throbbing hangovers appear to prevent you from being more inquisitve of your fellow knights, you bend to your meals, finish, and then each attend individually to your horses and gear in anticipation of shortly marching to war...

Sir Madoc

You assemble in the courtyard at the appointed time.  Around you are many knights, squires, and other assorted attendants although surprisingly few peasant folk.  There is quiet murmuring all around you, but the crowd seems exceptionally subdued, as if in expectation of a meeting of importance.  At the head of the courtyard is a raised wooden platform, perhaps level with your head.  A step just below that is also slightly elevated, perhaps waist level, on which you see Earl Roderick, Sir Lycus, and one or two other knights you do not recognize.  Additionally, other noble-looking men are on the platform, although you have no idea who they are, nor their significance.

From the right a ripple of conversation travels through the crowd.  A young knight in gleaming silver armor can be seen.  He has a handsome, lean, shaved face with shoulder-length, unruly hair and a piercing gaze.  He wears a cloak embroidered with two yellow back-to-back winged dragons on a green field, with a diagonal stripe of yellow behind.  A small retinue of knights flank him as he makes his way to the raised platform and motions for silence.

Sir Madoc:  "All, hear me!  Spies say another Saxon army has landed in the east!  Is there no end to these devils!?  His name is Aethelswith, but we don't know his plans.  The king has ordered Duke Lucius of Caercolun to be ready.  But our army isn't going to be distracted.  We're going to attack King Aelle, as planned, even though certain of our cowardly vassals are not reporting.  Disloyal bastards, that's what they are!  Caercolun won't be there, but that's the king's orders.  But that Cornwall...he's the worst of the lot!"

Sir Madoc pauses, as if his own rhetoric has gotten away from him.  He seems to internally compose himself before carrying on.

Sir Madoc:  "We shall assemble in Silchester in two weeks.  I have spoken with the Earls of note previously and they have our orders.  Our king calls us...FOR THE KING!!!"

The crowd cries, "FOR THE KING!  FOR THE KING!  FOR THE KING!!!"

Sir Madoc pauses for a moment, then steps from the platform and makes his way from the courtyard.  The members of the crowd begin to talk excitedly among themselves.  Through the commotion you see Earl Roderick gesture for you to come forward to him.  You make your way through the crowd to him.  Your recognize Sir Lycus at his side.  Another, larger knight stands nearby as well, although you do not recognize him.  Sir Lycus nods to you in acknowledgement.

Earl Roderick:  "Sirs, it is good to see you again.  As you've heard, we've quite the mess on our hands, those Saxon bastards!  We're to assemble in Silchester in two weeks.  You've much to do in that time.  First, you must see to squires for yourselves.  I've many young men ready and eager to serve and you shall have no problem finding willing and able volunteers.  Also, you shall need to replace any worn gear.  Give your needs to my steward <he nods to a gray-bearded man in robes off to the side whom you recognize as the man who called on Sir Lycus previously> and see that you are properly fitted out.  You shall need chainmail and shield, spear, and sword, or axe if you prefer, although you may need to acquire that at market as I do not normally keep axes in my armory.  Ensure your squires are properly outfitted as well!

"We go to war, sirs, and you are knights in my service.  You must comport yourselves thusly.  I shall put you under command of Sir Amug, your trainer and mentor.  He is a banneret knight, and tough as you well know, and he shall lead you well.  Two of your fellow young knights, Sirs Perin and Celwine, shall meet you in Silchester.  You have not yet met them, but they know you are coming and will look for you and introduce themselves to you when you arrive.

"I will meet you in Silchester in two weeks and we shall go to war together.  If there are no questions, you have much to take care of, so take your leave.  Sir Lycus and Steward Adam will see to any questions and needs you have."

With that, the Earl hurries off with the large knight and other nobles.

Dalan wanders over to the area where the Squires have gathered.

"So, you're the litter we're picking from, eh? Well, we don't really have time to get to know each other, and I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so let's cut to the damn chase. If you would rather sit in your room and meditate on whatever nonsense men meditate about in their room rather than spending time amongst the womenfolk with a beverage in hand, do not waste my time. If your answer to a challenge is "Let me think about it.", do not waste my time. For those that leaves as potentials, I seem to have broken my lance off in a bear and I would rather like to replace it. Whoever is going to take care of that for me is my Squire. I'll be happy to learn all about you on the road to Silchester."

With that, Dalan heads over to a comfortable looking pile of hay and enjoys a bit of a power nap.

From out of the crowd, some of whom are looking at Dalan's slumbering form with amusement, some with confusion, a rather middle-aged looking man steps forward.

Jon:  "Sir Lycus, Master Ael, I would be honored for the privilege of serving Sir Dalan.  If there be no objection, I'll see to his lance and gear?"

Ael:  "That will be fine, Jon.  See my man and he will draw your gear from the armory."

Sir Lycus glances down at Dalan's snoring form and chuckles gently.

Sir Lycus:  "Well played, Sir Dalan, well played indeed."  He glances at you other two.  "Jon will be a fine squire to Dalan.  In fact, I'd say they're perfect for one another.  Young Sir Dalan shows some impetuousness...Jon's served many knights well.  He will provide valuable maturity.  Now then, Sir Maelgwyn, Sir Godric, I believe someone younger would be more suitable.

"Sir Maelgwyn, perhaps you may be interested in young Geml?  He just turned 15 years in January of this year.  He is the son of Lady Adwen, daughter of Sir Bles.  You may recall that Sir Bless was killed in battle down south last year?  At any rate, her son has come of age and it would be honorable of you to take him as your squire.  In fact, Lady Adwen isn't much older than you...hmmm...well, at any rate, he'd make a fine choice.  Of course, there are many other from whom to choose in the great hall.  We're in no hurry if you'd prefer to wait until supper...many will be in attendance in preparation of needs such as your own.

"Sir Godric, I'd recommend young Han.  He is son of Lady Indeg, the richest heiress of the county.  Young Han is nearing 18, but his lord knight died in battle last year and he has not taken a new knight into service as far as I know.  He should be at the great hall this evening as well.  Of course, you should choose a squire that is of your choice, I simply provide a suggestion.

"Now then, what arms and armor do you need replaced?  We can supply spear and sword, shield and chainmail, but other sorts of gear will need to be purchased at market.  No reason why you'd need any more, but if it's your fancy so be it."

Dalan rises up after a brief period of sleep and stretches out. "Hmmm? Nobody's brought a lance yet?" One of the boys remaining in the Squire pool mentions that Jon has in fact gone to being collecting up gear.

"Ah, I shall have to make sure he takes good care of that saddle of mine. Won it in a tournament you know...have I mentioned that?" At this point, Dalan realizes that he's basically talking to himself as the others have split away with their squires for a bit. "Erm...yes. I had best see to this Jon fellow, then."

Maelgwyn slowly walks over to the group of restless men and boys. Not taking his eyes off of them he addresses Sir Lycus:
"You, no doubt, ken that I follow the Old Ways. I'll not seek to bring any of your Christ-flock back to what was merely a grandfather or two ago the only world we all knew, both above and below. For one to be squire to me I must know he values honor to those he pledges to in this world as much as whatever reward he might be promised in the next by the Cross-men. My uncles who have already campaigned against the Sassenach have oft spoken of how, after a battle was lost, the Church-priests cursed the defeat upon fellow Briton warriors who were not Christian, but Hen Llwybr. There has even been call for choosing those of us who take not the water-dunking to be warred upon as if we were part of the very Host who yet now masses from the coming of the rising sun across the water.

"Geml, whichever one of you lot he might be, believe you those not splashed by a priest to be worthy of your service? There may come a time when some will be harsh with you or tell you that your service means nothing if given to a Heathen. Such voices may even be kinfolk.

"Be ye ready for this or would'st ye wait for a christian knight to serve?"

Entering the Great Hall that evening, Godric looks around trying to spot Han. Finally he sights Han standing with a small group of other young would be squires.

Godric: "Are you Han, son of Lady Indeg?"
Han: "Aye Sir!"

Godric looks over the lad. He looks sturdy enough to carry a substantial load and has sharp, inquizative eyes. "I hear tell that you are without a knight. It so happens I am without a squire. We are about to ride off to meet the Saxons in battle. Would you be interested in serving me?"

Han, face brightening: "Aye Sir! I'm eager to get back at those that slew my first lord."

Godric: "Good then it's settled. Your first task is I'll be needing a helm of some kind, even just mail if that's all that is available. See Earl Roderick's steward for that. My sword needs a good sharpening and my shield could use a polish.'
Han: "Aye, I will take care of all that."

Godric: "Good, I like your spirit. Firstly though enjoy your dinner with your friends for you may not see them for sometime...."
Godric wonders off in search of Dalan and Maelgwyn for some food and grog for himself.

Finding Dalan and Maelgwyn sitting on a long bench enjoying their meal, Godric sits down across from them and starts to fill his own plate with roasted boar and stewed vegitables.

"So Maelgwyn, can you do some praying to your Gods that you don't mauled by some Saxon on this adventure? Then Dalan and I shant have to save your sorry arse again" and laughs deeply around a mouth full of food.

Maelgwyn turns to Godric and gives him a sour look. He then makes a strange gesture over Godric's plate.

"I am truly sorry to hear of your affliction. Whilst it will most surely pass in a few days, until such time passes the wenches will no doubt have a good laugh if you try to act on your interest in them. Most regrettable..."

He looks past Godric at the young ale wench beyond and smiles.

Dalan begins speaking around a mouthful of food "So, I assume the two of you found yourselves squires as well? How did you fair? Mine seems quite good. Sure, he's a bit older, but the man has some stories. Oh, and stop cursing Godric's food, Maelgwyn. Wouldn't want him weakened when next the time arrives to save your ass in battle, would you?"

"My squire seems a bit timid" Maelgwyn says. " I may have frightened the boy when we first met. I could but draw out the barest details of his family and training, all in little better than a whisper. Still, he promised fealty in the end."

Maelgwyn glances back over at Godric who is still eyeing his full plate with a look of great concern.
"Godric, both Dalan and yourself have much to learn if you believe me to be capable of cursing a knight's wench-pole simply by waggling my fingers over his supper. I am no Druid."

("Yet... ", he thinks to himself)

"Yes, I heard some of the others chattering about your little speech. Laid it on a bit strongly, perhaps? I believe that the idea is to have a Squire as an aid, not as someone to fear you on a constant basis. And as for the curse comment, it's called a joke. You may want to look in to learning about a sense of humor, particularly if you're planning on doing anything with that wench you've been eying since we sat down."

Eyeing his plate with some lingering concern, Godric says
"My squire come a right proper family and has already had one knight to teach him... though that one is now dead.... not sure how to read that..."
"Seems will enough anyway and he's young enough to be able to keep up with me."

Draining his mug, Godric calls for more ale. He gives the young lass a hearty slap as she leans over to fill Dalan's mug, sloshing some onto the table and Dalan's plate.

"Ha, sorry for that Dalan. Just glad it wasn't Maelgwyn's plate or I might be a newt by now!"
Godric gives Maelgwyn a large toothy grin and wink.

Maelgwyn chuckles and holds up his own mug. Refilled, he takes a deep draught. Still, he briefly looks away into the distance.
"Blade-brothers, I fear for our People, both Hen Llwybr and Christ-men. Though I am young, in my family-clan I am the brother-son of our seer. Many of my dreams are quite foreboding."
He looks up. "Dalan, you have told me that you and some of your family yet hold to the Old Ways. What would you know of your Seers' advise to your leaders? Have they spoken of the Sassanach at all, spoken of what we will need to do, beyond charging madly into battle, to keep their Great Tree from getting it's roots into our homeland?"

Dalan gazed thoughtfully over at Maelgwyn for a moment before a smile creases his face "Perhaps conversations of belief might be more suited to a time when I'm not quite so tipsy as I currently find myself...again. As for your fears, we are about to head off to battle. Tis right for you to have a bit of worry."

A brief pause as he shoves another large chunk of meat in to his mouth, "And Godric, how do you think I feel? Your quire has survived a knight? Mine has survived several. Lord knows, the man is old enough to have sired half the knights in this room!" With that, he chuckles a bit, hoping to have lightened the mood of both of his compatriots.
