Title: Library at Herculaneum

A new method of scanning allows charred papyrus texts to be read.  The eruption of Vesuvius burned a library, making it impossible to read most of the contents.
Now let's see those dirty scrolls of Roman porn.  Snort-Pant.

Wow!  :D

Text critics (who compare ancient copies to figure out the original texts as closely as possible) around the world will be wetting themselves. And I say that without meaning to sound snarky -- text critics are massive geeks.  O0 (As I know from working on the fringes of that discipline.)

The hugest discoveries would surely be any 1st century Jewish or Christian texts (canon or otherwise), or anti-texts for that matter either way (e.g. Philo deciding he wants to weigh in on what that carpenter-rabbi was doing). But copies are so pauce for any ancient text (except the NT, but even for the NT back that early -- we have no 1st century copies or even fragments), that anything recovered from this will be a gold mine for historians, literary and otherwise.

Agreed, Jason. I would love to know what has been forgotten.

That's awesome.  Will be curious as to what they find.

First scroll says, "SHHHHHH. It's a Library not a Chariot Race"!  Second says, "In the event of Volcanic Eruption, shelter in place under the tables. They are all fireproof".  8)
