Good discussion on the development of Star Trek II.
Very cool write up. Thanks for posting that.

Yeah, thanks for the link besilarius. :)
Some of the stuff mentioned I was already aware of, but much it was new info. And in any case, the article underscores the critical importance TWoK had in establishing Star Trek as a true franchise, and helping making it an even bigger cultural phenomenon than it already was.
Thanks Belisarius. The background to the film was new to me and very interesting.
Thanks for posting.
Still the best ST movie and you have to really thank Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer for saving the franchise.
Back when I used to read "Starlog" magazine, it was reported that one woman who saw the movie numerous times always walked out during Spock's death scene because she was so upset over it.
Starlog. That was a great mag back in the day.

Doesn't matter that I've watched Spock's death scene probably 100 times (literally - not hyperbole). I still choke up every time.

True story: back when Bro was courting his wife, he wanted to share Star Trek 2 with her, which she politely agreed to (that genre not being her thing). So they came over and we watched it on my DVD.
Final scene, the crew is standing around on the bridge talking about the Genesis planet, and Ishy suddenly asks, "...where's Spock?"
"...uh, well, they thought they had shot him into orbit around the planet, but, just wait you'll see."
"Shot him into orbit?"
"Yeah, maybe that wasn't very clear, sorry; it looked like a photon torpedo, because that's how they shot it, but remember back when they were giving the eulogy at his funeral and Scotty was playing the pipes? They were loading his casket into one of the photon torpedo launchers."
"His
casket?""Well, yeah, they weren't going to just dump his body into space -- "
"SPOCK
DIED!?!"At that point I started laughing and couldn't stop for several minutes. I kept looking at the expression on his face, and the expression on her face.
Fifteen or sixteen years married now. :)
Nothing quite like empathy and appreciation.

This, only last week was it on, the scene, the bagpipes, the eulogy
And oddly enough the same in the new one - girlfriend leaned over in cinema and said 'are you crying'
'Don't ever, ever tell anyone what you saw today'
The funeral scene was incredibly well done.
Yes, much better than any he got on the show. Didn't he like die 2 or 3 times on the show. And Kirk about 5 times. Mc Coy once, Scotty maybe a couple of times. The only one that stayed dead was the new guy on the landing party. ;D
And then last night, Nimoy himself died. :(
So expect to see that scene played a lot. :)
I saw that too. Terribly sad. RIP Spock. :'( BTW does anyone know if Spock had a first name? Was he ever called anything but Spock in the show or films?
S'chn T'gai Spock
Are you making that up Star? You're usually serious about your SciFy but I never know with you. ???
its pretty simple to google Spocks full name.
He's not making it up:

I read Ishmael, but forgot about his first name. Must be going senile.
OK then. Try writing that on a check.
