If you're ever over in Japan and have an interest in this stuff, try to make it over to a small town in Tottori prefecture called Yonago.  That's where the creator of Gegege no Kitaro was from and they've turned much of the town into a kind of living theme park based on his characters and folklore monsters.  It is Japan so a lit of it is overly cutesy but some if it he very cool.  They've built a few blocks to look like a traditional 19th century village and, at night it's very dimly lit with red lanterns and they have kind of horror/haunting nights in the fall.  It's very well done.
